It's a very well made point in your supplementary post.Toy Trumpetnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8377446.post-44901904988435735272012-05-11T12:05:17.553+01:002012-05-11T12:05:17.553+01:00I have no doubt that by 2040 50% of all people wil...I have no doubt that by 2040 50% of all people will be classified as obese. It just takes a little tinkering of the present BMI calculations.

I remember that at school we were also served all sorts of food that today is considered unhealthy. Kids used to argue about who would get the skin of the custard or the corner section of pies. We ate fast just in case any ‘seconds’ were available.

The difference was that after eating (as quickly as possible), we would rush out and play football for what was left of the lunch break. We didn’t care if it was raining, cold or snowing; and our parents didn’t complain to the school if we came home bruised, cut or grazed.

Proper physical education in schools has all but disappeared. Fat kids are allowed to sit out of P.E. lessons for fear of being teased.
Would a kid that was failing in long division be allowed to miss mathematic lessons?

Also, the few kids that were overweight when I was at school were told that they were too fat. Not only by the other kids but by the teachers as well. They were rightly made to feel different and hopefully improve themselves.
The teachers probably realised that their future health and career prospects would improve if they took better care of themselves.

I suppose that would be seen as bullying today.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8377446.post-41254480496730059842012-05-11T11:38:45.792+01:002012-05-11T11:38:45.792+01:00Having read through my post, I do not want you to ...Having read through my post, I do not want you to think it is an attack on single mothers. I was merely pointing out that many of the "kitchen jobs" in schools, are taken up by single mothers that have kids at that school so that they are off during school holidays. These tend to be those that have been forced out to work by the state and then paid minimum wage with their money made up in benefits. This means that as a nation, the taxpayer is subsidizing private companies to keep pay artificially low. They pay NMW knowing that the state will make up the shortfall to a living wage and that the state will force people to take such jobs or lose their handouts.

I noticed that my own grandchildren will eat normal, adult food once weened but, once they eat school meals, they then become very fussy and will only eat processed, high in MSG crap. I would hate to be a parent today.Tonk.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8377446.post-50395263617786878802012-05-11T11:28:44.566+01:002012-05-11T11:28:44.566+01:00Many of Nanny's policies encourage obesity.
Ki...Many of Nanny's policies encourage obesity.
Kids are seldom allowed out to play, they have little sport at school and when they do, it is seldom that competitive. The food they serve at schools, dispite Nanny Oliver's intervention, is still highly processed and full of crap. This is necessary because the contractors that provide the school meals service, have raced downwards to the lowest possible cost levels and they have to employ low paid, unskilled people, often single mothers, to serve and heat the food. Because of the regulations regarding food service and the costs to train staff in food handling and preparation, they have to keep the contact with the food and those heating it to a minimum and therefore the food comes in full of preservatives and ready prepared.
When I was at school, we had an army of dinner ladies that prepared good, British, meat and two veg fayre. We ate proper meals, made with fresh ingredients, and cooked that morning in the school kitchens and, as far as I know, no one had food poisoning as a result.

It should also be noted that most professional sports men and women are technically obese using Nanny's one size fits all BMI guide.....I would love to have a body like Frank Lampard, even if that meant being labelled obese.

Shut up Nanny and let people get on with their lives.Tonk.noreply@blogger.com
