The Dangers of Spuds

Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s hospital have conducted research, published in the British Medical Journal, that has concluded that eating potatoes may lead to an increase in the risk of high blood pressure. Note an increase in risk is not the same as increase in cases!

However, in what I deem to be a fatal flaw in their research, they did not distinguish between the cooking methods used (eg baked, mashed, fried etc). That being said they also concluded that there was no association between eating crisps and high blood pressure.

However, the authors acknowledged that, as with any observational study, no firm conclusions could be drawn about cause and effect.

In other words this research is of bugger all use to man and beast!

They should have told that to the poor sods during the Irish Potato famine; at least they would have died with a smile on their faces knowing they were dying from starvation rather than high blood pressure.

    This is academia gone bonkers!

I have carried out a little research myself.

In a restaurant the other night I, and all the other people there, could not help noticing the big, fat bastard that was taking up 2 seats.

He ordered the most enormous plate of spaghetti and proceeded to stuff his face.

All during his meal he was sweating like a pig.

My conclusion is that if you are grossly overweight, then any activity, which includes the simple act of eating ANYTHING, will dramatically raise your blood pressure.

I should have thought that if eating potatoes were likely to lead to high blood pressure, eating crisps would be more likely to have that effect than consuming potatoes in other ways.

Like most elf'n'safety advice! Best thing to do is to ignore it! One is far more likely to get high blood pressure from listening to the elf'n'safety "experts" and their advice
