It seems that Auntie's solution to the gender pay gap (exposed yesterday) is not to increase the salaries of female presenters, but to cut the pay of the male ones.
BBC director of radio and education James Purnell said pay cuts were part of the solution.
He told the BBC's Newsnight programme:
"Quite a lot of men have been taking pay cuts; John Humphrys said that today on air."Auntie's socialist tendencies are being exposed here, where everyone is dragged down to a lower level.

Well, as a 'feminist', I think there should be equality of pay between the genders; as a taxpayer who is forced to pay the licence fee on pain of imprisonment, I think the salaries should never have reached the astronomical sums they have - just how hard is it to present a magazine tv programme or read the news? As for the old chestnut that the Beeb has to compete in the market, I suspect that the commercial channels have to compete with the Beeb: the former cope with the tension of advertising jockeying with actual programming while the Beeb rakes in about £4,000,000,000 annually without having to appeal to anyone except the BBC Trust. As for the famous standards of the Beeb: the impartiality of its journalism and the quality of its drama, the former is a joke and the latter infrequent (the last one I can remember is the adaptation of "Wolf Hall".
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing.......................Besides the BILLIONS that the BBC are raking in from license payers, who have absolutely no choice but to pay, they are still unable to compete with Sky.
ReplyDeleteI am appalled that the BBC cannot show live golf from our own Open Championship. The oldest competition in golf history.
Instead they have highlights each night, presented by some woman who I have absolutely no idea is.
