Last night's BBC News at 10 worked itself up into breathless excitement over the 3,000 or so positive Covid cases.
However, what it failed to report or even suggest that it asked were the following:
- how many tests were conducted
- the percentage of the tests conducted over the last few days/weeks which were positive (in order to determine a trend)
- the number of cases that were asymptomatic
- confirmation that all the tests carried out used the same procedures, and thresholds, for declaring "positive"
- rate of increase, if any, of hospital admissions
If you don't report the above facts, or at least ask the questions and state that you have asked the questions, simply reporting a headline of 3,000 "cases" is meaningless and irresponsible reporting!
Even PHE has finally admitted that procedures, to prevent false positives, need to be improved!
