Nanny Bans England Flags On Royal Mail Vans

The Royal Mail has banned postal workers from flying flags on their delivery vehicles during the World Cup.

Postal chiefs said flags could distract drivers or “pose a potential hazard to other road users” if they came loose, and that the decision was made to uphold the company’s duty of care to employees and the public.

I wonder how it was Postman Pat was allowed to drive a van with a cat companion?

Anyhoo, about 125,000 delivery staff across 1,400 depots nationwide will be affected by the ban. However, 25,000 backroom staff will be allowed to display flags in offices.

All in all, whether this is "'elf and safety gone mad" or not, it is academic as England will probably crash out of the World Cup soon enough!

The Dangers of Grass

Oh dear, I see that the health and safety brigade have donned their jackboots again.

This time the "safety" issue relates to a grass verge, and the "risk" that postmen might slip on it.

Thus it has come to pass that the Royal Mail has stopped postmen delivering letters to a row of houses in Torfaen because walking on a grass verge has been deemed "too dangerous".

The health and safety ban came about after one postman complained about Severn View, Pontypool, on his round.

Bosses agreed a short stretch of grass between car tracks and residents' front doors was unsafe so the 10 homes need to collect mail from a Post Office.

Royal Mail said it would carry out a further "safety assessment".

Resident Richard Osborne, is quoted by the BBC:
"We still get all of our junk mail through the letterbox but anything important like the deeds to my house, are sitting in the Post Office, it's unbelievable.

They even refuse to put slips through your door for parcels that are too big and need collecting - how will you know that if they don't put the slip through the door?"
A daft safety measure by anyone's standards!

Postman Prat

Commiserations to the resident of Maryfield Walk and Rogerstone Avenue (in Stoke-on-Trent) who were, at the tail end of last year, hit by the health and safety gestapo who work for the Royal Mail.

Owing to "uneven paving slabs" (that are deemed by Nanny to be a "trip hazard") the Royal Mail have banned their postmen from delivering to these roads. Residents have to make a six mile round trip to pick the mail up from the nearest depot.

The Mail quotes a spokesman for Royal Mail said:
"We have temporarily suspended deliveries because of the very poor state of the pavements in the area.

We previously raised our concerns with residents about the safety risk because the pavements are their responsibility, but to date these haven’t been addressed.

We carried out a further risk assessment last week and the paving clearly posed a safety risk. Our delivery staff have been injured in very similar circumstances and as we have a duty of care we are not prepared to compromise on safety.

We are keen to resume deliveries to these addresses as soon as improvements are made to the pavements."
Seemingly the council will not repair the road.

Pete Price, of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said:
"It is the responsibility of the landowner to ensure the roads and pavements are maintained to a safe standard."
An absurd situation, by any reasonable person's standards!.

Nanny's Attitude To Rain

Given that we are now in the midst of our usual high quality, warm and sunny British summer (that'll be the global warming then!), I am gemused to see that Nanny has banned postmen from delivering post on rainy days.

For why?

Health and safety!

The ever efficient and technologically up to date Royal Mail has suspended deliveries in the area of South Parade Doncaster during "adverse wet weather conditions", after a postman slipped on algae and moss on the pavement and broke his shoulder.

Customers have been told to collect their post from the town's main sorting office during bad weather.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Morag Turnbull said:
"Last Friday, a member of staff slipped on algae and moss on the pavement at South Parade due to adverse wet weather and consequently broke his shoulder.

Following a risk assessment of the area, we have notified Doncaster City Council of the danger posed by the poor condition of the pavement.

We have explained to customers in South Parade that we must, only during adverse wet weather conditions, suspend deliveries to their address as a precautionary measure until the pavement surfaces are improved by Doncaster City Council.

Customers will be able to collect their mail from Doncaster Delivery Office.

We know this is inconvenient and we apologise to customers, but the safety and welfare of our staff is paramount and we only suspend deliveries if the safety of our postmen and women is at risk."
Agh!

Whenever I hear the phrase "risk assessment", I instinctively reach for my revolver!

Anyhoo, unsurprisingly the council deny that there is anything wrong with the pavement.

Therefore the customers of Royal Mail are caught in a Colombian stand off, between the Royal Mail and the council.

Good luck with that then!

The Dangers of Hills

The Dangers of Hills
Oh dear, poor old Nanny seems to be getting rather confused in her old age. On the one hand she is exhorting us to take more exercise (eg walk upstairs, go for long walks etc), yet on the other she is worried about the risk involved in walking up slopes.

The good citizens of Booze in Yorkshire (yes it really is called Booze!) have for decades had a decent postal service, whereby Postman Pat has driven/walked up the twisting lane to Booze to deliver the mail.

However, under Nanny's regime the Royal Mail has deemed that the road is too dangerous for its vans and that the postman cannot walk the road because he has a bad back!

The residents must now make a 45 minute drive to the sorting office in Richmond to collect their post.

Royal Mail delivery office manager, Colin Appleby, wrote to residents saying:

"The road is extremely narrow, and if you have to reverse down, this is potentially an accident waiting to happen."

Farmer's wife Hazel Harker, whose family has lived in the hamlet since 1945, is unimpressed:

"I know the road's steep and I know it's narrow, but there are lots of little roads like that. You just have to drive carefully. There have been no accidents on that hill."

A spokesman for Royal Mail said:

"A health and safety assessment was undertaken and the report confirmed that access to a number of premises is a risk to our staff and, as a result, deliveries were suspended."

Pass the sick bag someone!

No one has been injured in the last few decades of mail deliveries.

Maybe the name "Booze" has also put Nanny off?
