I see that the "great debate" about Nanny's advice to eat "five portions of fruit and veg a day" continues to "rage".
A European "study" now concludes that we should eat eight portions a day.
The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Heart study claims to show that people who eat at least eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day have a 22% lower risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease (IHD), than those who consumed fewer than three portions a day.
Pretty convincing eh?
Well not really, the study also notes (almost reluctantly) that a higher fruit and vegetable intake occurs among people with other healthy eating habits and lifestyles.
Oh yes?
Oddly enough these factors may also account for the lower risk of dying from IHD!
In other words, if you eat a balanced diet and take sensible exercise (ie don't destroy yourselves by living as a potato and eating only shite) then you will probably be more healthy.
Were do I apply for my grant to conduct similar "research" that will come to that conclusion?

Multi Nobel prize winning scientist Linus Pauling (the recognised grandfather of organic chemistry) discovered long ago that the key to reducing heart disease was Vitamin C in doses far larger than can be obtained from eating fruit and veg. alone - we are talking GRAMS per day. I take 2-3 grams per day in tablet form. Yet what is EuroNanny trying to do? Ban high-dosage Vit.C tablets because her tame "experts" claim the now disproved theory that we need only 75mg per day. Wrong - 75mg is the minimum required to prevent scurvy, but much larger amounts are needed to maintain health. The minimum to take is 1 gram (1,000mg) daily.
ReplyDeleteMost mammal make their Vitamin C in their livers but a chance mutation in our past left humans without this ability. We have to obtain our Vit.C. from our diet. It's take a lot more than "eight a day" to meet even the minimum 1,000mg daily. There's only one way to take big doses of Vit.C, by the supplements that EuroNanny is trying to outlaw.

I'm feeling better.
It MUST be due to the lacto-wotisit.
