Nanny's chums from Alcohol Health Alliance (no I have never heard of them either!) - an umbrella group of more than 40 UK health NGOs, including the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges - have called for a ban on alcohol advertising in the UK, in light of new research that claims the industry’s marketing practices encourage young people to drink.
Prof Sir Ian Gilmore, chair of AHA, said:
“It is clear that self-regulation is not working and we welcome calls for greater action from governments to protect children from exposure to alcohol marketing.All very "caring" and "won't someone think of the children" no doubt, but it transpires that AHA are talking utter bollocks, as per the Guardian recent data showing that levels of youth drinking in the UK are the lowest on record, with only about 17% of children aged eight to 15 admitting to ever drinking alcohol.
We know that alcohol marketing contains content and messages that appeal to children, and that due to exposure to this advertising, children drink more, and start drinking at an earlier age.”
In other words, AHA are either massively misinformed or are lying!

Children are easily influenced by all things. That is how they learn.
ReplyDeleteA child may be influenced by an advertisement for a car, but until that child reaches the age of 17 they will just have to wait.
Children cannot buy alcohol until they are 18 years old, so who cares if they are influenced by advertising or not?
What the AHA should realize is that we live in an adult society and not a children’s telly-tubby land.
