Snow Joke

Snow JokeThe recent snow fall in the UK, which needless to say crippled our third world transport infrastructure, caused Nanny to become very Nannyish indeed.

Christopher Lewis, a farmer from Hinton Waldrist near Wantage, did his bit for the local community by using his snow plough to unblock roads in the village. He then made one fatal error, he called his local council to ask if he could help anywhere else.

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's right, the council told him that they needed proof of training and insurance before they could consider the offer.

It is ironic that the more health and safety rules that Nanny imposes on us, the more unsafe (eg because of roads blocked by snow) we become.

Our country will eventually grind to a halt permanently, as we drown in rules and regulations imposed upon us by council bureaucrats afraid of their own shadows.

I used to roll the local cricket team's outfield for them with a heavy two-pin commercial roller, as a favour, before nanny poked her nose in. Now the team look after the actual square for themselves and the outfield is left, so balls bounce up at awkward angles all the time and have regretably injured players (some of them in the face).

Ahhhhh.....Good ol' 'Elf'n'Safety......Obey, Obey....Perhaps Nanny's biggest fear was that this farmer, with commonsense and experience rather than having attended a brainwashing course, could do it better than Nanny's little helpers..

He can look on the bright side - at least they haven't prosecuted him for unlicensed snow clearance!

Is the raising of arms still allowed?

I suspect that the farmer will be prosecuted by his local water supply company for theft of water or moving a water source without a licence or something.

But we really should not complain you know. Nanny really does care.

We are having a new kitchen soon and an electrician came around to see about the small amount of re-work required. Well, you can't do it yourself these days can you ..

He was explaining that in recent times Nanny's minions and standards writers had identified that millions of us were dying needlessly early deaths every year due to poor electrical work and so the standards were being tightened up. Indeed every year a new 'edition' of the regulation was published which mostly made last year's 'edition' obsolete. It is amazing how 'old ideas' become dangerous so quickly in this post modern age.

Anyway what is all seems to be leading up to is the need for a new 'consumer unit' every time any wiring work is undertaken more than a year or two since the last update and the possibility of re-wiring every 5 years.

Nice to know that someone is kept busily employed constantly re-writing standards.

I wonder if it might be possible for this person to be given an extended sabbatical to allow the industry to catch up with him and the poor customers to save enough take-home to afford the cost of all this lifesaving?

About 50 years should do it.

Well I replaced a friend's consumer unit last year despite not being a licenced electrician so by law he should call in a council "inspector" to check my work.

However I'm deemed a "competent person" under the Electricity at Work Regulations and am experienced working on electrical gear running on much higher voltages and currents than the average domestic system. So we didn't think we needed to have my work checked by some snot-nosed twerp in a suit who's "expertise" was gained on a fortnight's course.

Grant & Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells - that all sounds awfully familiar. I've done quite a bit of work for a farmer friend, and the entire U.K. farming industry would close overnight if all the regulations were enforced.

I often pick up a copy of a trade magazine at my local electrical wholesalers, and it's always full of complaints from time served electricians angry at having to go back to school to get new certificates just to prove they can do a job they've already been doing for years.

I remember one letter from a guy who designed the electrical installation for the Queen Mary 2nd, but couldn't legally replace the ring main in his own house.

Yet they also send in photo's of "horror stories" taken on holliday in Spain etc - so much for EU harmonisation.

Ah, the EU the altar at which Nanny worships and sacrifices all our common sense laws to the god of 'harmonisation' and 'integration.'

What Hitler could not achieve with a massive army of SS stormtroopers, Nanny has achieved with an army of council snoopers, pencil squeezers and general jobsworth nonentities.

Saddest thing is we have let the old bitch do it.

  15. Grant, what you said reminds me of a friend of mine who decided to rent out his empty flat. He had the landlords gas and electrical check required by law, and was informaed that he had to go to great expense and have the gas flu made bigger, which he did. This was in 1995. He is still renting out the flat, and has the obligitory safety check done annually. In fourteen years he has had to have the gas flu widened three more times!!
