Nanny Hates Fags

My sympathies to Nick Hogan, a former pub landlord from Chorley, who is the first person in the UK to be jailed after flouting the smoking ban.

Mr Hogan was sentenced to six months in prison, for failing to pay fines for smoking ban breaches at his two Bolton pubs. He was found guilty of breaching the smoking ban in January 2008 at the Swan and the Barristers pubs he ran.

On the day the ban came into force he organised a "mass light-up" in the two pubs.

He was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £7,136 in costs.

Following the conviction, Mr Hogan lost his job and was unable to keep up with the £125 a week fine payments.

He was jailed last Friday by magistrates in Bolton.

There is now a fund being raised to pay off the fine.

  1. Ken;

This is the problem; The state always ensures it has the full weight of the law behind it so, as the Borg say, resistance is futile.

Six months is a little over the top as was the original fine....It seems you get less for a serious assault or theft....Still, it is Nanny's crazy world!!!

Enjoy...Oh bollocks, you can't actually enjoy anything in this country any more.

Who is this Dorothy Gov that keeps telling us all what to do?

I strongly dislike smoking (ex-smoker see), but this treatment is still way over the top in my book.

Totally out of proportion with what is, really, a minor offence.

  3. The government has no right to interfere in the free enterprise of a business owner by making him ban smoking, especially in a pub. No one forces any of us to sit in a smoke filled pub.

  4. I wonder if the MSM is realising yet that a story like this circles the world a 100 times before they even get ink on their presses.

I undertook a short drive to a local DiY outlet the other day. I traversed a few of the residential areas, as in regular residential areas not the elevated suburbs, of a local well know and not insignificantly sized city to get there.

I noted that there were 4 prominent, good sized, pubs boarded up and, presumably awaiting demolition along the route - which actually means within about a 3 mile area in the city.

Clearly the social centre that was once the pub is a thing of the past in many places. Has anything replaced it? I suspect not.

Is this a smoking ban thing or an internet thing or some other thing?

As Tony Hancock observed in 'The Radio Ham' program. "Friends all over the world. None in this country - but all over the world."

I have to admit that these days I am a rare pub visitor - making up for my younger days I suppose. Perhaps their time is past.

Ken, I hope you don't mind my unashamedly touting here but the fund is still open for donations (button under banner on right)

    http://bastardoldholborn.blogspot.com/

The fund is now only just over £1K short of the sum needed - in less than a week! It is, incidentally, almost twice what the appalling ASH, who have peddled the lies on which the ban is based, managed to raise in volunatry donations in 2008/9 (you and I compulsorily donate to them via HMG).

Many non-smokers have contributed, realising that the smoking ban was a mere tactic in the war on smokers and that drinkers are now beginning to enjoy ASH's Persecution Manual!
