Booze Matters - Daily Testing

My thanks to a loyal reader who pointed me to a pretty ghastly story about Nanny's desire to introduce daily alcohol testing (via a fingerprint scanner) at the workplace.

Nanny intends to start with public sector and security staff etc, then doubtless all and sundry will be targeted.

As anyone who has ever worked in the real world knows, half the workforce (especially in an office) turns up hungover each morning.

Once one has been found to be hungover in charge of the photocopier, what does Nanny (public sector or private sector) propose to do?

Sack you?

Such nonsense will require massive rewriting of employment contracts, and will turn the already dismal workplace into a soul destroying place of misery and drudgery.

The fact that technically the tests can be done done not mean that they should be done.

It is a terrible idea, and contrary to the basic tenet of a "grown up" society that an adult should be treated as an adult so long as he/she behaves in a responsible manner.

    Agree 100% Ken!

This is a disturbing story in many ways. How long before other tests are introduced for other things Nanny dissapproves of? Weekly weigh-ins to ensure we're not putting on too much weight?

I think Nanny is already doing the ground work for the sheeple to ensure compliance....One local secondary school here, has just got a new head teacher, she has decided that no child will leave the school during their lunch time.....Bearing in mind that, the upper sixth pupils may be almost nineteen years old. Our local schools have better security than Fort Knox and most have CCTV too,.....Pupils will leave school thinking that this level and type of intrusive security is the norm, acceptable and indeed, desirable, so the jump to alcohol and other testing at work will be no problem nor worry for them.

If you want to read a really scary document, look at the green party's policy page, especially the education section.....Orwell would be delighted that The Greens have mistakenly used his 1984 book as a plan, rather than a warning, as he intended.

What I cannot understand is why people put up with it? Much of the nanny stuff doesn't impact on me because my child is grown up and I work for myself, but why don't people simply say eff off?
