Flooding and Politicians

As the UK continues to be engulfed by a veritable biblical flood, it is worthwhile noting that where a real response/solution to the flooding and infrastructure failures is needed our "beloved" politicians (irrespective of their political leanings and the number of hi vis photo opportunities they avail themselves of) have been shown to be powerless, inept and lethargic.

  1. It really is a hi-viz fest of the highest order....Loads of politicians all clad in brand new hi-viz wear......Each "agency" with their own hi-viz style trying to look important.....Doesn't the enviroment agency's hi-viz look like a police hi-viz? I wonder if this is by design so that when one of their oppos tells someone to do something, that someone may think they're being given an instruction by a copper.

I heard an appeal go out yesterday from Wraysbury for more hi-viz jackets; I had to laugh because, although everybody and their mother is in hi-viz garb to make them stand out, the army are all dressed in camoflague which is designed to make them not stand out.

When I worked in the NHS and we had a VIP visit, if anything, they just got in our way and caused the ward to grind to a halt.....As if by magic, senior managers and admin staff would appear from nowhere and pretend they were doing something clinical......I wonder what the people on the ground in these flood areas think of the VIP visits?

I think the media have made the politicians visit the scenes of the flooding but, in my opinion, unless Messers Cameron, Milliband or Clegg have King Canute amongst their numbers, I can not see the point in them being there at all.....Unless one of the aforementioned wants to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in, they should stay away.

  2. Ken,
Shouldn't this article be on your "Palarse of Westminster" blog ?
Any hoo..... What angers me is that Somerset has been submerged for over 6 weeks before anyone went there or the troops were mobilised. The Thames rises one inch over its banks and there's mass mobilisation of all 4 branches of the armed forces.
My favourite saying to explain this....... "When the effluent hits the affluent......."

  3. I don't normally watch Sky News, but did so yesterday morning. I have to say I was rather impressed - although things were disorganised, to say the least, they let the locals have their say without interrupting them. The now famous verbal ear bashing that Philip Hammond received did have some effect - less than half an hour after he offered to take the lady to meet "Gold Control" (or what ever it was called), Sky reported that 100 troops were now being dispatched to do whatever the local organisers wanted!

I entirely agree that it shouldn't take a public humiliation to get the desired result, but at least he didn't try and duck (sic) out of the issue. I saw in this morning's paper that a local mayoress ordered Militwat out of the building, as he was just getting in the way! Pity they didn't cart the odious little sod off, and use him to shore the flood defences up...

No chance of any of them doing anything useful, Tonk! I may be cynical, but I am of the opinion that the presence of politicians at such disasters has far more to do with their own egos than any intention of rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty or actually doing anything to help alleviate people's suffering, and don't forget there will be a general election next year, so they will want people to think how caring and compassionate they are, even if the opposite is nearer the truth!

Well, what do you expect? They always bend over backwards to help London and the southeast, whilst the rest of the country can go hang, not to mention the fact that the areas on the Thames Valley affected are the homes of the wealthy, not ordinary people.

  6. Ed Miliband is such a wet weekend that rumours are the water level rose by another two inches when he decided to do his photo op (sorry - "show concern for the people") yesterday.

Frankly he's so sodding useless you couldn't even use him as a sandbag.
