Nanny's Love of Tamiflu

I see that a review carried out by Oxford University has concluded that the anti flu drug Tamiflu, given to tens of thousands of people during the swine flu pandemic, does nothing to halt the spread of influenza and that Nanny wasted nearly £500M stockpiling it.
The study found that Tamiflu, which was given to 240,000 people in the UK at a rate of 1,000 a week, has been linked to suicides of children in Japan and suggested that, far from easing flu symptoms, it could actually worsen them.

Nanny, let me also remind you, is dead keen that we drink water with added fluoride.

This is why I brush my teeth with vodka!

Psst...Wanna Buy Some Tamiflu?...Going Cheap!

Arthur DaleyI understand that our glorious leader, having once sold a large amount of our gold reserves off at a knock down price (at the bottom of the market), is about to flog off some large stocks of flu retrovirus treatments (Tamiflu et al).

Oddly enough, Nanny's predicted Swine Flu epidemic didn't quite kill off vast swathes of the population. Nanny is now sitting on vast stockpiles of Tamiflu etc, which of course she will not be able to sell at the price she bought them for.

Someone, somewhere, did very well out of this "epidemic". However, it certainly wasn't the British taxpayer!

Dr WHO?

Dr WHO?
On 24 July 2009 I said:

"Tamiflu causes some pretty unpleasant side effects (eg nausea) in around 10% of people who take it. The chances are that swine flu will be less unpleasant."

Well, stap my vitals, but several weeks later the World Health Organisation (WHO) have agreed, and said that healthy people with mild symptoms of swine flu should not be given Tamiflu.

Yet Nanny still insists on giving it to all and sundry.

For why?

Nanny believes that this will zeroise the risk of the symptoms worsening.

The trouble is that:

1 The side effects of Tamiflu, when treating a bog standard infection of Swine flu, can be worse than the flu.

2 The flu may well build up a resistance to Tamiflu if it over prescribed in this manner.

3 You can never zeroise risk, nor should you try to.

Swine Flu Hotline II

Swine Flu
Following on from yesterday's article about Nanny's Swine Flu hotline, I have a few more observations:

1 Nanny's Swine Flu website crashed within the first few hours of operation.

2 A reporter from The Times rang the Swine Flu hotline and found that, although polite, the non medical operative she spoke to was barely literate and had trouble pronouncing basic "medical" words such as "Tamiflu".

3 Nanny's losing candidate in the Norwich election was absent for most of the week, owing to an infection of Swine Flu.

4 Our troops continue to be killed and maimed in a useless and unwinnable war in Afghanistan, this ongoing disgrace is conveniently pushed below the headlines by Swine Flu.

Gives you every confidence that Nanny is managing this well doesn't it?

Swine Flu Hotline

Swine Flu Hotline
I am amused to see Nanny boasting about her new swine flu hotline, where people can ring up call centres manned by non medical personnel (some of them work for supermarket call centres I believe) and self diagnose themselves for a dose of Tamiflu.

Here's why this is a daft idea:

1 Swine flu (a variation of which was around in 1976) does not kill the majority of people infected with it.

2 Flu kills people each year, I see no reason to panic the population into thinking that swine flu is any more dangerous than other varieties of flu.

3 Many people claim they have flu, but in effect are just suffering from a very bad cold.

4 The hotline will be abused by people to stock up on Tamiflu "just in case", or to sell on to others.

5 Tamiflu causes some pretty unpleasant side effects (eg nausea) in around 10% of people who take it. The chances are that swine flu will be less unpleasant.

6 Nanny, by focusing people's minds on swine flu and pretending to take "decisive action", ensures that our attention is taken away from the dismal state of the economy and the God awful Prime Minister that we are saddled with.

Swine Flu - The Leaflet Arrives

Swine Flu
Yesterday the Frost residence, along with households across the country, received Nanny's Swine Flu leaflet.

Cue a roll on the drums!

Drum Roll

Dear oh dear what a waste of time, effort and our money!

I have scan read it, and am far from impressed. Here are a few thoughts as to why it is bollocks:

1 It has clearly been written by a committee of "fearful" risk averse people, determined not to let any potential issue go unmentioned.

2 At ten pages it is too long, and won't be read by those who may well actually need to be told to wash their hands and catch their sneezes in their handkerchiefs.

3 The salient points, about symptoms and washing hands etc, don't appear until page six and onwards. Most people will have given up by page two. The salient points must appear on page one!

4 It directs the reader to a number of websites depending on geographical location (England, wales and Northern Ireland each have two). Not only is this confusing, it is quite unnecessary and a duplication of resources. Why not have a one simple one page website that lists symptoms, preventions and what to do?

5 Page four is a self congratulatory advert for Nanny, telling us that she has enough stocks of Tamiflu and Relenza for 50% of the UK. All very well, but the reality is that 50% is the combined holding of Tamiflu and Relenza; Tamiflu will be the first line of defence, if that doesn't work then Relenza is used.

6 Page two says that no one has immunity.

Complete bollocks!

Genetically speaking there will always be individuals who are resistant to new diseases, whatever they may be. Scaremongering of the worst sort!

7 Page ten offers the leaflet in Welsh. Given that this is a supposed "public health emergency", wasting time and money on producing leaflets, as a pc sop, for people who speak English perfectly well is absolutely scandalous.

In a real crisis all such pc pretensions would be thrown out of the window, and those who came up with such nonsense taken out and shot.

8 In the event that Swine Flu is here to stay, then the likely peak will be in winter. Nanny, by going into overdrive now, has lessened the effectiveness of any campaign that she may have to mount in winter if, and it is a big IF, Swine Flu takes a foothold in winter.

9 This is simply a self serving exercise by Nanny to show that she is busy, and to take our minds off other issues.

A pox upon the leaflet, and upon Nanny!

Swine Flu

Swine Flu

I see that our media are really getting worked up over this swine flu "epidemic", so much so in fact that they have stopped placing the "financial meltdown" at the top of the headlines.

I also see that Nanny, in order to be seen to be doing something, has now decided to send every household in the UK a leaflet explaining what to do.

Nurse Strictness

Here is my advice (I am not a doctor), but it is common sense which you should already be doing anyway:

1 Don't waste your money on those masks, they don't work.

2 Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly (something that staff in some of Nanny's hospitals seem to have lost the habit of); especially when coming back inside the house, having handled money, before food and after a loo visit.

3 Eat properly.

4 Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands (or indeed any other organ of your body).

5 Don't live, eat, or sleep with pigs.

6 Continue to enjoy roast pork and pork sausages.

7 Avoid having sex with human beings and pigs.

That's it in a nutshell. I am now going to have a couple of Wall's finest!

BTW, now is a good time to buy hog futures, as when the swine flu "epidemic" turns out to be a storm in a teacup they will rebound.

Please do remember though, I am an accountant not a doctor:)
