Taking The Piss

Oh dear I see that Aberystwyth and Newcastle researchers have come up with a "dip stick" test for urine, that shows what and how much you have eaten.

They call it a "lie diet-tector," allegedly it will become a vital tool for identifying the causes of disease.

I dread to think what Nanny will try to do with this.

  1. When I saw the piece on Al-Ja Beeba, the state broadcaster's web site, it said that this test device could tell what someone had eaten over the last few days and this would allow nutritionists to monitor their client's food intake. I also noticed that in the States, a few schools are fitting electronic wrist bands to monitor some pupil's activity in a bid to cut down obesity levels among children. It doesn't take a genius to see where this new test strip could be used by the state to monitor people's food intake, as the state appears to be getting more and more involved in people's private lives and lifestyle choices with food and weight becoming the latest "area of interest" for our progressive Marxist state machine.

    Why bother with this research?

I would imagine it is far easier to find what and how much someone has eaten by simply asking them. If there is a genuine medical reason for the enquiry then I can’t see why anyone would give a dishonest answer.

And if a patient is unable to answer for whatever reason, a turd would usually suffice.

Although it would never be used to incriminate Nanny, it could do so - strap them on to the elderly in hospital for evidence of neglect.

I think I'll call bullshit on this one!

I'll have to do some specific reading but to start off - urine metabolites represent the 'acute' status, ie. what you have just recently (hours) eaten, not the chronic, long term diet, so stuff yourself on donuts for weeks, then eat a nice healthy salad the day before your test - pass with flying colours.

Vitamin metabolites are not detectable in urine yet as far as I am aware. Then of course there is the question of whether there are actual specific metabolites for each individual food. I don't think so! You think there are different chemicals for each and every food? I hate to point out the old saw but we share 50% of our DNA with a banana (yes I know not exactly true, but close), so you think there aren't significant and numerous identical chemicals in different foods?

Do you think any test of urine can differentiate between a Big-Mac and a pate-on-rye? Between chicken nuggets and duck a l'orange? No, and any 'scientist' who says they can from a dipstick test is going to have some serious proof to provide.

Just another case of 'scientists' providing evidence that obesity (smoking/global warming/etc/etc) is bad for you? Who knows, but my first instinct is to look at who was funding this 'research'. But then I'm just a permanent cynic.
