Nanny’s Ludicrous Proposal to Fine Supermarkets Over Shopping Basket Calories

In a move that could only be described as a masterclass in bureaucratic overreach, the government has floated a proposal to fine supermarkets for failing to reduce the calorie content of customers’ shopping baskets. Yes, you read that correctly—supermarkets, not individuals, would be penalised for the choices shoppers make. This harebrained scheme is not only impractical but also a textbook example of government meddling in personal freedom, dressed up as public health policy. Let’s unpack why this idea is as unworkable as it is infuriating.

First, let’s address the sheer impossibility of enforcement. Supermarkets sell thousands of products, from fresh produce to processed snacks, and customers buy whatever suits their needs, preferences, or budgets. How exactly is a supermarket supposed to control the calorie content of a shopper’s basket? Are cashiers expected to scan each item, tally up the calories, and then—what?—politely ask customers to swap their ice cream for kale? The logistics are a nightmare. A single shopping trip could include a mix of high-calorie treats, low-calorie vegetables, and everything in between, varying wildly from one customer to the next. Short of installing calorie police at every checkout or forcing shoppers to submit their receipts for a nutritional audit, there’s no feasible way to monitor or enforce this policy without turning supermarkets into dystopian surveillance hubs.

Then there’s the question of responsibility. Supermarkets don’t force anyone to buy anything. They stock shelves; customers make choices. Holding retailers accountable for individual decisions is like fining a car dealership because someone drove recklessly. People buy food based on taste, cost, dietary needs, or cultural preferences—not because Tesco or Sainsbury’s whispered sweet nothings about chocolate cake. Punishing supermarkets for offering variety ignores the fundamental reality that personal responsibility drives purchasing decisions. If the government wants to tackle obesity, it should focus on education or subsidies for healthier options, not scapegoating retailers for stocking what people demand.

The economic fallout of this proposal would also be disastrous. Supermarkets operate on razor-thin margins, and fines for something as nebulous as “calorie reduction” would likely force them to raise prices or cut costs elsewhere. Smaller chains or independent grocers, already struggling against retail giants, could be driven out of business entirely. And who pays the price? Consumers, of course—especially low-income households who rely on affordable food options. Forcing supermarkets to police calories could also lead to reduced stock of popular items, limiting choice and driving shoppers to less regulated markets like corner shops or online platforms. The ripple effect would be a mess, with no guarantee of healthier outcomes.

Let’s not ignore the absurdity of the government’s underlying assumption: that supermarkets can magically engineer a nation of healthier eaters. Even if retailers slashed the availability of high-calorie foods, people would still find ways to satisfy their cravings—whether through takeaways, black-market biscuits, or home baking. The idea that fining supermarkets will somehow transform the public’s eating habits is laughably detached from reality. It’s like trying to fix a broken bridge by ticketing the cars crossing it.

This proposal also reeks of authoritarian overreach. The government’s job is to provide infrastructure and guidance, not to micromanage what goes into our shopping trolleys. By shifting the burden onto supermarkets, they’re effectively admitting they don’t trust citizens to make their own choices. It’s a slippery slope—today it’s calories, tomorrow it’s sugar, salt, or maybe even “unapproved” food combinations. Where does it end? A state-mandated meal plan for every household? The nanny state has never looked so intrusive.

In short, this calorie-fining fiasco is a policy so divorced from practicality it could only have been dreamed up in a Whitehall bubble. It’s unenforceable without draconian measures, economically reckless, and an affront to personal freedom. If the government wants to promote healthier lifestyles, it should ditch the fines and focus on empowering people, not punishing businesses for doing their job. Supermarkets aren’t the problem—bad policy is.

The NHS Weigh-In Fiasco: Starmer’s Million-Pound Nanny State Nonsense

In a move that reeks of bureaucratic overreach and fiscal insanity, Keir Starmer’s government has unveiled its latest brainchild: spending millions of NHS pounds to send out annual invites for Brits to step on a scale. Yes, you read that right—millions of taxpayer pounds to remind us to do something we’ve all been capable of since we could stand upright. Is this the bold new vision for Britain’s healthcare system? If so, we’re in deeper trouble than we thought.

Let’s break this down to its absurd core. The NHS, already creaking under the weight of endless waiting lists, staffing shortages, and crumbling infrastructure, apparently has cash to burn on a glorified mass mailing campaign.

The plan?

To nag every adult in the country to get weighed once a year, as if we’re all too dim to notice our trousers don’t fit. Last I checked, scales aren’t exactly rare artefacts. You can pick one up for a tenner at Argos, and most of us have a dusty set lurking in the bathroom, quietly judging us already. So why, pray tell, does the government think it’s worth millions to post us a polite nudge?

This isn’t about health—it’s about control. Starmer’s Labour seems hell-bent on turning the NHS into the nation’s nanny, spoon-feeding us basic life advice while ignoring the real crises. Cancer patients are waiting months for treatment, A&E departments look like war zones, and GPs are rarer than hen’s teeth. Yet here we are, funnelling precious resources into a scheme that assumes we’re all too lazy or stupid to monitor our own waistlines.

It’s insulting, it’s wasteful, and it’s a slap in the face to every taxpayer propping up this beleaguered system.

The numbers don’t lie, but they do make you weep. Millions of pounds for paper invites, printing, postage, and whatever bloated administrative machine will inevitably spring up to “manage” this farce.

For what?

A marginal uptick in people stepping on scales they already own?

Meanwhile, the NHS could’ve spent that money on, say, hiring more nurses, fixing leaky hospital roofs, or buying equipment that doesn’t belong in a museum. Instead, we get this—a patronising, pointless exercise in government busy bodying.

And let’s not pretend this is some grand public health triumph. Obesity’s a problem, sure, but it’s not like we’re all sitting around clueless, waiting for a government-issued hall pass to weigh ourselves. The data’s out there: we know the risks, we know the stats, and we’ve got the tools. What we don’t have is a government with the guts to tackle the NHS’s real issues instead of chasing headlines with gimmicks. This isn’t leadership; it’s a distraction.

Starmer’s defenders might bleat about prevention being cheaper than cure. Fine—except this isn’t prevention. It’s a redundant memo to people who already know the score. If the government really cared about our health, they’d fix the systemic rot that keeps the NHS on life support, not waste millions on a glorified Post-it note. We’re not children, and we don’t need a babysitter with a stethoscope.

So here’s the bottom line: this weigh-in scheme is a colossal waste of time, money, and trust. It’s the kind of policy that makes you wonder if anyone in Whitehall has a shred of common sense left. We’ve all got scales, Keir. What we don’t have is a government that knows how to spend our money wisely. Stop treating us like idiots and start fixing what’s actually broken.

Nanny To Experiment On The Obese Unemployed

Under a plan by Nanny, obese unemployed people are going to be given the 'king kong' of weight loss jabs to get them back to work.

Whatever happened to good old fashioned diet and exercise?

The experiments will last for 5 years.

I wonder what experiments Nanny will conduct on the thin unemployed?

Boris Declares War on Fat

I see that Boris's brush with death, and a look at the Covid death statistics, has convinced him and the government that obesity is one the prime causes of a Covid death.

As such, he appears to want go hell for leather with an anti obesity campaign.

I am not a doctor, but I dare say obesity may well have a part to play in the deaths. As to whether an anti obesity campaign and "sin" taxes will make the slightest difference, I have my doubts.

Nanny has been lecturing us for years about our ever expanding guts, with little or no success.

I suspect this will be a fruitless war that will achieve very little.

Sugar Sugar

inews reports that the sugar tax on soft drinks has revolutionised the industry, with the average beverage now 28 per cent less sugary than before the tax was introduced, a new study has found.

Drinks makers have slashed the sugar content on many of their existing brands and introduced new, low-sugar alternatives.

However, it should be noted that the alternative non sugar sweeteners that have been added appear to trick the brain and body into thinking that it has ingested sugar.

The result?

The body produces fat, and the chances of diabetes remain the same as if you had ingested sugar!

Nanny To Ban Eating on Public Transport

Professor Dame Sally Davies, Nanny's Chief Medical Officer and food nazi, wants to ban people eating on public transport.

For why?

Seemingly it will make us slimmer.

Well, if I could be bothered to waste my time on thinking up various reasons why this is bollocks list them here (eg it won't work people will remain fat, some people need to eat on public transport eg diabetics, it is unenforceable etc etc).

However, I will simply save my time and yours by saying:

Nanny's Fat Shaming Makes Things Worse

James Corden makes a very good point:
"It's proven that fat shaming only does one thing.

It makes people feel ashamed and shame leads to depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour - self-destructive behaviour like overeating.

If making fun of fat people made them lose weight, there'd be no fat kids in schools."
Nanny might want to consider that she has added to the problem, rather than helped people improve their health.

Nanny's Snack Tax

As per the Guardian:
"A snack tax of 20% on biscuits, cakes and sweets would have “a huge impact” on obesity levels in the UK and be more effective than the current levy on colas and other sugary drinks, say experts."
These "experts" do know that 20% VAT is already levied on snacks don't they?

Tax All Food!

Nanny's Chief medical officer Prof Dame Sally Davies (who has called herself the nation's "chief Nanny"), is calling for taxes on unhealthy food high in sugar and salt.

She went on to say that her dream was to make fruit and vegetables cheaper for everyone from the proceeds.

Okay here's why this is bollocks:

1 Taxes on booze and food do not change behaviour for the better, people either ignore them or seek less expensive/less healthy alternatives.

2 Who decides what is "healthy/unhealthy"?

3 It is not Nanny's role to dictate to us what we may/may not eat.

4 Government's never use tax proceeds for the good, they are swallowed up by the ever increasing cost of Nanny's bureaucracy.

Fast Food Healthier Than Restaurant Food

Much to my amusement, after years of telling us that fast food was bad for us, Nanny has now come to the conclusion that sit down meals in restaurants are in fact more calorie laden that fast food.

Therefore we must conclude the fast food is in fact good for us!

Nanny's drones have concluded that the calorie content of meals in UK restaurants is "excessive" and sit-down restaurants are unhealthier than fast-food chains, BMJ research suggests.

Health "experts" say meals should not exceed 600 calories, but in this study they averaged 1,033 in restaurants and 751 in fast-food chains.

Why should a meal be limited to 600 calories?

Who are these people to tell us that?

University of Liverpool researchers analysed thousands of meals from places like Hungry Horse and McDonald's.

They said their findings were a cause for concern.

It is clear that Nanny will not only continue trying to shut down fast food outlets, but will now also try to the the same to sit down establishments.

My conclusion is that these people shou;d fuck off and let us get on with our lives!

Nanny Bans Freakshakes

Oh dear I see another unelected group of busybodies, with too much time on their hands, has got their collective knickers in a twist over what some people choose to eat.

Step forward Action on Sugar, which is demanding a ban on freakshakes and all milkshakes with more than 300 calories.

According to these tossers, the freakshakes contain "grotesque levels of sugar and calories".

The Toby Carvery Unicorn Freakshake came top of the survey with 39 teaspoons of sugar or 1,280 calories. The Toby Carvery Unicorn Freakshake is made with grape and raspberry flavoured ice cream, blackcurrant jelly pieces, milk, freshly whipped cream and topped with marshmallow, skittles and almond macaroon.

Here's my humble musings on this subject:

1 I don't have a sweet tooth, as such I don't usually eat desserts let alone milkshakes etc.

2 I wouldn't be seen dead eating this shit.

3 Irrespective of my personal food tastes, it is not my business to tell others what they may or may not eat. People can eat all the shit they like, so long as I am not forced to eat it.

4 It is not the role of the government, or unelected tossers, to dictate to us what we may/may not eat.

5 What is it, and this is a genuine question, that drives certain people to set up "action groups" whose sole purpose is to focus on one specific food/drink etc (eg sugar, salt) with a view to banning it? Why do these people feel they must dictate to the rest of us what we may or may not choose to eat?

Please feel free to answer point 5, as I really can't understand these tossers.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Nanny wants people need to take “greater responsibility" for taking the strain off the NHS, by taking the approach "prevention is better than cure".

Fair enough, that is a perfectly reasonable maxim.

However, Nanny believes that this will be achieved by people cutting down on how much they eat and drink.

Matt Hancock, who?..the Health Secretary, will apparently tell a health conference that taxpayers have a role to play in taking pressure off the National Health Service by focusing on the prevention rather than the cure.

Nanny intends to focus on stopping unhealthy lifestyles.

Yes, the word "stop" is being used. So much for people "taking responsibility"!

Public Health England will examine how to target health advice at people living in areas with there is a higher preponderance of "unhealthy lifestyles".

Nanny intends to look at "harnessing digital technology" as a form of "predictive prevention" to target people in regions prone to poor diet and bad drinking habits. In other words non middle class areas.

The Telegraph reports that Hancock will say:
It’s about people choosing to look after themselves better, staying active and stopping smoking. Making better choices by limiting alcohol, sugar, salt and fat.

But focusing on the responsibilities of patients, isn’t about penalising people.

It’s about helping them make better choices, giving them the all the support we can, because we know taking the tough decisions is never easy.”
It sounds to me as though it will be a case of penalising people and telling them what to eat drink, and smoke!

Public Health England will bring together and coordinate a range of experts to build, evaluate and model predictive prevention at scale.

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England, said:
"We need to move from a system that detects and treats illnesses to one that also predicts and prevents poor health through promoting health in all policies and puts people back in charge of their own health."
I have a few observations:

1 This will not put people back in charge of their own health, it will be used by Nanny to dictate to people what they may eat, drink and smoke etc.

2 Nanny has her sums wrong, whilst it costs an inordinate amount of money to treat people for obesity, booze, drugs etc.; it costs even more to keep people alive in their old age treating dementia etc etc.

3 Who the hell wants to live longer, only to end up in one of Nanny's homes for the elderly?

4 Given that the NHS is free, people are incentivised to take advantage of it. Until you start charging people for missed appointments, lost equipment etc you will never get people to act responsibly.

5 What exactly constitutes a "healthy lifestyle"?

BMI Is Bollocks!

Excessively high or low body mass index measurements have been linked to an increased risk of dying from nearly every major cause except transport accidents, new research says.

The study, published Wednesday in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and conducted by scientists at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, revealed that BMI that's either too high or too low is tied to increased morbidity from a range of major diseases.

Whilst it is no doubt true that if you are obese or anorexic you may well not be in the best of health, to use BMI as a measure of obesity or anorexia is bollocks.

There are far better ways to determine if someone is obese/anorexic eg:

- commonsense
- gut size
- bones poking through the skin etc

Relying on BMI will lead to false results!

Nanny Wants To Ban Greggs

My sympathies to the good people of North Shields who would like to have access to a bakery.

Nanny doesn't like the idea that Greggs has applied to move into a vacant unit in the Collingwood Centre, and is doing her best to ban it.

Wendy Burke, the borough's director of public health, is quoted by The Chronicle:
"Two thirds of adults and one third of 10-11 year olds adults in the borough are either overweight or obese.

A key priority both nationally and locally is to encourage healthy eating. This is incredibly difficult to do if we continue to allow developments that promote the sale of food high in fat, calories and salt within our commercial centres and in the immediate vicinity of our local schools and leisure centres, as an increasing proportion of people consume food outside the home."
She added that a new Greggs would make it easy for youngsters to buy "cheap, highly calorific food not only for breakfast, but also for lunch and tea".

She is seeking to blame obesity on a chain of bakers!

Sadly a petition with 73 signatures has been submitted against the development, citing concerns over childhood obesity, cooking smells, loss of residential amenity, vehicle noise, loss of visual amenity, litter and vermin problems. A further 33 letters of objection have also been sent to the council.

Coun Peter Earley, cabinet member for children, young people and skills, said in his objection that the a Greggs would be "detrimental to health and wellbeing of children and young people who attend nearby schools and would be situated in an area where there is already a significant issue with rising levels of childhood obesity".
All of this is of course utter bollocks:

1 Obesity cannot be blamed on a particular chain of bakers

2 Greggs is a bakers, not a "fast food" outlet.

3 It's not the role of the state to dictate what people may or may not eat.

4 The unit is vacant, if these cretins had their way it would remain forever vacant and be ablight upon the high street!

Nanny's Calorie Cap

It seems that Nanny is now abandoning any pretence that we have a right to choose what and how much we eat, as she proposes to introduce a mandatory calorie cap on food.

The fascists in Public Health England insist that pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings, and pies, ready meals and sandwiches will also be subject to the new proposed calorie limits.

Under the draft proposals, a standard pizza for one should contain no more than 928 calories - far less than many sold by takeaways, restaurants and shops.  And the recommendations suggest that a savoury pie should contain no more than 695 calories.

Public Health England (PHE) said “drastic” measures were needed to combat Britain’s obesity crisis.

Dr Alison Tedstone, PHE chief nutritionist, told the Telegraph:
It could mean less meat on a pizza, it could mean less cheese, it could mean a smaller size. Consumers are saying they want smaller portions and healthier options.

We know that just having healthy options on the menu won’t change the nation’s habits - we need the default option to have fewer calories. The default options for pizzas are margherita and pepperoni pizzas, so we need them to get healthier.
Here's why this is bollocks:

1 It's not the state's business how much shit we eat or drink, we are all going to die one way or another; let us choose the manner of our death!

2  Consumers have the right to choose the size of pizza, pie etc and then (if they are full) leave some of it for a doggy bag.

3 Restaurants and takeaways will simply flout this nonsense by offering two "government regulation mini" pizzas for the price of one.

All in all this is a disgrace, Nanny should "go away"!

Scottish Nanny Bans Then Unbans Poppadoms

Scottish Nanny has, as per usual, made something of a fool of herself.

Scottish Nanny, fearful of the alleged obesity of her subjects, had decided that free poppadoms and prawn crackers (often accompany takeaways) would be banned.

24 hours later, having been justifiably ridiculed by all and sundry, Scottish Nanny has backtracked and the SNP has said that free traditional extras with Chinese and Indian meals, which are often included if a customer spends above a set amount, would not be under threat as part of its anti-obesity strategy.
