Southern Advice

My compliments to Southern Railway for the following advice displayed on their "in train" electronic message boards on Tuesday:
"During hot weather please remember to take a bottle of water with you. If you fell unwell it is normally best to get off at the next station and seek assistance."
Sage advice indeed, so long as the toilets work and the train isn't stranded for too long between stations!

As usual, stating what is blindingly obvious! You have, however, pointed out one of the flaws with this sage advice, Ken. Most trains these days not only have fewer toilets than they did a few years ago, but they seem to be less reliable, resulting in them being 'out of order' considerably more frequently! Another flaw is that apart from those serving the larger towns and cities, the majority of stations are unstaffed for at least part of the day, many 24/7, so there would be nobody there to seek assistance from! And what if you feel unwell on the last train of the day? Is it really wise to get off at a strange place in the middle of nowhere with no way of completing one's journey that night? As usual, Nanny's advice has been poorly thought out!

    My Lord,
I agree with your thoughts, might also take the liberty of suggesting that one must also remember that few trains these days have buffet cars on them and thus, no opportunity to purchase liquids whilst on the train.

I wonder why, now that we start our kids in school just past their third birthdays and keep them there until they're eighteen, they leave school unable to understand that they may need water to drink on a hot day.....What are they being taught? What other good advice(sic) may rail companies offer their hapless passengers; how to put one foot in front of the other? How to wipe their backsides? Are we now really such a needy, ignorant, child like nation so as to justify this type of advice?

I work in one of our bastions of higher education and judging by this years intake of students I think my answer would be yes. One of my colleagues who has, over the past few years had to teach remedial maths to students whose course requires basic maths approached me with an exasperated look earlier and said "Well, this year we're going to have to teach them to wipe their own ar**s!".

Every year we do indeed wonder exactly what it is they are being taught at school (bongo drumming and advanced dribbling have been mooted) but whatever it is, it isn't anything of any use in later life or which instils even the basic modicum of common sense into them.

The students in question? The future doctors of Great Britain.
