The Toothbrush Tyranny: Government’s Latest Nanny State Absurdity

In a move that proves the government has officially run out of real problems to solve, bureaucrats have decided that your kids can’t be trusted to brush their own teeth. Yes, you read that right: supervised teeth brushing is now a thing, courtesy of the overpaid busybodies who think they know better than you how to raise your own children. Welcome to the nanny state’s latest obsession—dental micromanagement.

Picture this: a gaggle of government-approved toothbrush monitors, armed with clipboards and sanctimonious grins, hovering over five-year-olds like drill sergeants at boot camp. “Up, down, circles—don’t miss the molars, Timmy!” Meanwhile, parents—those incompetent fools who’ve somehow kept their kids alive this long—are relegated to the sidelines, deemed unfit to oversee something as complex as a two-minute scrub with a plastic stick and some paste. It’s not just insulting; it’s a parody of governance.

The justification? “Public health.” Apparently, cavities are the new plague, and the state must swoop in to save the day because, clearly, no one thought to teach kids dental hygiene before 2025. Forget the fact that tooth decay rates have been dropping for decades thanks to fluoride, better diets, and—shockingly—parents doing their jobs. No, the government insists we need a taxpayer-funded army of molar minders to ensure little Johnny doesn’t sneak a half-assed brush past the system. What’s next? Supervised handwashing? Mandatory flossing quotas?

This isn’t about health—it’s about control. The same clowns who can’t fix potholes or keep bridges from collapsing now want to stick their noses (and probably their unwashed hands) into your bathroom routine. They’re not content with regulating your guns, your gas stoves, or your light bulbs—now they’re after your kid’s toothbrush. It’s the ultimate power grab: if they can dictate something as mundane as brushing, what’s off-limits?

And let’s talk cost. Every one of these dental despots needs a salary, benefits, and probably a shiny badge that says “Tooth Fairy Enforcement Division.” Add in the training programs—because you can’t just trust any schmuck to wield a timer and a stern look—and the inevitable “oversight committees” to oversee the overseers. Who pays for this? You do, sucker. That’s right, your tax dollars, already stretched thin by inflation and endless government bloat, are now funding a toothbrush gestapo while schools still can’t afford books.

The real kicker? Kids aren’t even that bad at brushing. Sure, some smear toothpaste around like it’s finger paint, but most figure it out with a little parental nudge. Studies—like the ones the government conveniently ignores—show that basic education and access to dental care do the trick. But why solve a problem efficiently when you can turn it into a bloated bureaucracy instead? This isn’t prevention; it’s performance art for politicians who want to look like they’re “doing something.”

Then there’s the creep factor. Do you really want some stranger leaning over your kid, peering into their mouth, barking orders? In an age where parents are already paranoid about who’s around their children, the state thinks it’s a grand idea to insert itself into one of the most personal daily routines. Call it what it is: invasive. Next, they’ll be installing cameras in your kitchen to make sure you’re cutting the crusts off sandwiches correctly.

The irony is, this is the same government that lectures us about “empowerment” and “independence.” Yet here they are, treating kids like incapable drones and parents like negligent morons. If you want to teach responsibility, let kids brush their damn teeth and deal with the consequences—a dentist visit or two never killed anyone. But no, the nanny state prefers coddling over competence, control over common sense.

So, parents, brace yourselves. Hide your toothbrushes, lock your bathrooms, and tell your kids to smile pretty—Big Brother’s coming for their pearly whites. And when the inevitable rebellion hits—because nothing says “teen angst” like a government-mandated hygiene routine—don’t say we didn’t warn you. In the meantime, maybe we should all just gargle some whiskey and call it a day. At least that’s still legal.

For now!

Nanny Steals Fat Children From Parents

It would seem that allowing your children to become fat, is now deemed to be child abuse by Nanny.

The Argus reports that two teenage children from Sussex have been taken from the care of their parents after council social services staff told a family court judge of concerns about their weight.

Judge Gillian Ellis ruled the youngsters should go into long-term foster care - and described the case as "very sad and unusual".

West Sussex County Council has responsibility for the children's welfare and previously provided Fitbits and paid for gym memberships for the pair.

The family has also been involved with Weight Watchers.

But Judge Ellis said that, months after family court proceedings began, there had been no reduction in the children's weight.

The judge said the children's parents had not seemed to understand "the seriousness" of concerns raised by social services staff and had failed to "set boundaries" or "promote healthy eating and exercise".

She said the children needed the chance to "learn ways of living more healthily" and to "improve their health by losing weight".

Detail of the case emerged in a ruling by Judge Ellis published online on Wednesday.

The judge had considered evidence at a private family court hearing in Sussex late in 2020.

She said the family could not be identified in media reports of the case.

Judge Ellis said West Sussex County Council was the local authority involved.

The judge said there were also concerns about poor home conditions and a lack of guidance on personal care.

"Everyone agrees that this is a very sad and unusual case, of a loving family, where the parents meet many of the basic needs of the children, but the local authority has been concerned that the parents are not meeting the children's health needs, in that both children are severely overweight, and the parents have shown an inability to help the children manage this condition.

The case was such an unusual one because the children had clearly had some very good parenting, as they were polite, bright, and engaging."

The parents did not seem to understand the seriousness of the local authority concerns.

They failed to set boundaries for the children, or to promote healthy eating and exercise."

The children had failed to engage consistently in exercise despite the local authority providing Fitbits and paying for gym memberships.

The children were supposed to provide recordings from their Fitbits but this had not been done.

The mother blamed lockdown for the inability to exercise but exercise could still be taken in the home or by walking outside.

The attendance of the family at Weight Watchers had been inconsistent."

This doesn't seem to right to me at all!

Nanny Bans "It"

Commiserations to the pupils at Rudyard Kipling Primary School, Woodingdean, were reportedly told they could no longer touch each other while playing at break time.

It has left children feeling “bored” at break times, while some parents say it will turn their children into “snowflakes” because they are being mollycoddled.

The Argus reports that a letter sent home to parents by the headteacher Joanne Smith said it follows concerns about “play fighting and rough play” that were “causing some children to get upset”.

She said games such as “it” and “team it” had “escalated” and said a new “gentle hands” rule was in place at the school.

It included teaching children “lots of new games” that follow the gentle rule.

Whilst Mrs Smith has told parents it does not mean children cannot touch each other, parents say their children were told not to touch one another.

A letter from Mrs Smith to parents states:
To clarify, ‘Gentle Hands’ does not mean ‘no touching’. The children are of course allowed to hold hands or play clapping games with a friend should they wish to.

Gentle Hands simply means playing games outside that do not need to be physical.

This will ensure the playground is a happy, safe and calm place where everyone can enjoy their lunchtime running around and getting the exercise we know is important to them.”
I take it rugby etc is banned at this school?

A non scientific observation/query raises its head, as schools seek to cover kids in cotton wool and ban contact sports, "it" etc how is it that the levels of street violence appears to be escalating?

Could it be that by banning these games Nanny is breeding a generation of kids/teens who can't cope with reality, or control their emotions, and resort to hysterical violence when reality bites?

Childrens' Remembrance Parade Ditched, Lest They Be Cold and Hungry

Saltash's annual Remembrance Day Parade has hit some turbulence after the mayor decided to stop it lest the children taking part were cold and hungry.

Councillor John Brady (ironically an ex serviceman) said there was already plenty happening to honour the military on the day already, and noted that the service had had been timed for 2pm to accommodate youngsters taking part in a planned pebble laying event commemorating the First World War earlier in the day.

Cllr Brady said any parade would have had to be squeezed in late afternoon - which wouldn't have been fair on families and asked why a parade had not been planned, he is quoted by the Telegraph:
"Lots of events are going on during the day.

We have to take into consideration the children that will be out for most of the day there will be lots of children around it could be a very long and cold day."
Why not simply schedule the parade for the morning, and ditch the pebble laying?

KFC and Kellogg's Find Themselves on Nanny's Naughty Step

My sympathies to the good people of KFC and Kellogg's who have been placed on Nanny's naughty step.

For why?

Nanny's chums from ASA have told them to remove adverts which promoted junk food to children.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) says they broke strict rules on advertising high fat, sugar or salt products to children.

The ASA found Kellogg's promoted a Coco Pops product, during a Mr Bean cartoon, likely to have been seen by children.

It also ruled KFC advertised a Mars product on a phone box by a school.

FFS!

KFC said the appearance of the ad close to a school was a simple human error and it had taken the advert down promptly, once it had been alerted.

Kellogg's said it was disappointed with the decision as it had only meant to promote the healthier Coco Pops Granola product, rather than the original version. For the record the new "healthy" foul tasting option (which has less sugar) only saves 1 calories per serving compared with the tastier original version!

Why are we allowing Nanny to stick her nose into our affairs?

Nanny Bans Sweets

Nanny has pledged to "help close the deprivation gap" by looking at why children from poorer areas are more than twice as likely to be overweight.

Nanny's plan is to encourage all primary schools to introduce a daily "active mile" for children. Official advice recommends children should do 60 minutes of activity per day.

The measures, which will open for consultation by the end of the year, include:
  • Banning the sale of sweets and snacks at checkouts, shop entrances and in buy-one-get-one-free deals
  • New restrictions on advertising unhealthy food to children on TV and online, which could include a pre-9pm ban
  • Clear calorie labelling in restaurants, cafes and takeaways, to help families know what they are eating
  • Ending the sale of energy drinks containing high levels of caffeine, to children
It beggars belief that a Conservative government is now so obsessed with micro managing people's lives!

The above restrictions won't make the slightest difference; it is not the state's role to manage what kids eat, it's the parents who should manage their kids' diets.

Ban Puddings - Serve Quinoa and Spinach

I pity the poor kids who end up with quinoa and spinach in their lunchbox.

My mum would pack me banana sarnies, cup cakes and home-made crisps.

On the subject of puddings, well clearly if someone is overweight then eating a pudding is not going to help them. However, puddings have been served in school canteens since time began; yet it is only in the last decade, or so, have kids become corpulent.

Methinks it's not the puddings which should be blamed for the outbreak of corpulence!

Obese Kids and Nanny's Targeted Interventions

Nanny says that more than 22,000 children will leave primary school dangerously obese this year.

The number of 10 and 11-year-olds classed as severely obese, the most overweight scale, in the final year of primary school is also nearly double that of those in reception.

More than 22,000 out of 556,000 of children in Year 6 are classed as severely obese, a significant increase on the 15,000 four and five-year-olds in the category.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which obtained the figures, said this showed children were gaining weight at a drastic rate as they went through school.

The first data of its kind for 2016-17, obtained by the LGA and supplied by the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP), show that a total of 22,646 out of 556,452 10 and 11-year-olds (4.1 per cent) are classed as severely obese. For children aged four and five, reception class age, the figure is 14,787 out of 629,359 in total (2.35 per cent).

Severe obesity rates are highest in children living in the most deprived towns and cities, and those from BME groups, which the LGA suggested shows a need for more targeted interventions.

Nanny just loves targeted interventions.

Two points:

1 As we all know, BMI is a bollocks way to determine obesity.

2 As In noted last week, childhood obesity figures are bollocks!

However, Nanny doesn't care because she wants to have her targeted interventions.

Childhood Obesity Figures Are Bollocks!

As per Christopher Snowdon:
"I argued last month that Britain’s childhood obesity statistics are worthless. They are based on an unjustifiable assumption about the scale of child obesity in 1990 and that error has plagued every subsequent measurement. A flawed methodology has led to the number of obese children being greatly exaggerated.

I suggested that the true number is less than half that suggested by the official statistics. We are told that one in five children are obese by the time they leave primary school. I believe that the true figure is closer to one in twenty and I have the evidence to back me up.

To recap, the normal body mass index (BMI) cut-off of 30+ does not work for children so we have to improvise. The current British system defines children as obese if they have a BMI that would have put them in the heaviest five per cent of their age group in 1990.

Were five per cent of children obese in 1990? No. How many children were obese in 1990? We don’t know, but we do know that barely one per cent of 18 year olds were obese and we know that obesity tends to increase with age, so it seems certain that fewer than two per cent of children were obese in 1990."
Nanny's figures are bollocks.

The reason that she still uses them is because they suit her purposes, and they enable her to bully people!

Nanny To Weigh and Measure Schoolkids

Nanny at Number 10's Policy Unit is currently studying proposals whereby schools would be judged on how well they help their pupils to lose weight as part of the government’s national obesity strategy.

Schools across England would be required to weigh and measure their pupils every year. Those identified as obese would receive intensive and funded support to lose weight, including free gym classes and home visits.

Don't Touch The Snow!

Headteacher Ges Smith at Jo Richardson Community School in east London has banned his pupils from touching snow.
.
He said the new rule has been introduced for health and safety reasons.

Speaking this morning on Good Morning Britain, Mr Smith said:
The problem is it only takes one student, one piece of grit, one stone in a snowball in an eye with an injury and we change our view.

The rules are don’t touch the snow. If you don’t touch the snow you’re not going to throw it.
He added that the snow also makes the children wet and cold.

Childhood fun and games (which are a method by which children learn to take bumps and knocks and interact with each other) are banned by Nanny and replaced by cotton wool.

This is neither safe nor wise!

Nanny Wants To Pay Mothers To Breastfeed Their Babies

Seemingly a study of breastfeeding habits in the UK has concluded that more mothers would breastfeed if they were paid.

The suggested figure is around £200, possibly in vouchers for supermarkets/shops.

Can anyone spot the flaw in this, otherwise, "ingenious" plan?

Yes, that's right, how the hell does Nanny know if the mother is telling the truth that she is breastfeeding her baby?
In the event Nanny implements this suggestion, will men be paid to have a J Arthur everyday (given that it is meant to be good for the prostate)?

Nanny Bans Sausage Rolls

My thanks to a loyal reader who has advised me that Nanny's school lunchbox Gestapo are now searching for forbidden sausage rolls.

The BBC reports that the new policy at Shirley Manor Primary Academy in Bradford states parents will be called if banned foods are found in packed lunches.

Steve Fryer, whose son's sausage roll was confiscated, said the school should "stick to teaching kids".

The policy says pupils are encouraged to show their packed lunches to staff before and after they have eaten.

It states pork pies, sausage rolls and pepperoni sticks should not be included and neither should fruit squash or flavoured water.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????

MPs have been urged to launch an inquiry into the placement of foster children after a white Christian girl was reportedly put into the care of a non-English speaking Muslim family.

The child, aged five, who speaks English as her first language, has been looked after by two different Muslim households in the past six months.

The girl was reportedly told to remove her Christian crucifix necklace and was not allowed to eat carbonara because it contained bacon.

She was allegedly encouraged to learn Arabic in one household and was begging not to go back there because "they don't speak English", according to a confidential report from the local authority seen by the Times newspaper.

Restaurant Offers Discount For Well Behaved Kids

The Evening Standard has rather an amusing story about a restaurant in Italy that offers discounts for diners with well behaved kids.

Antonio Ferrari, who owns a restaurant in Padua, said he was fed up of ill-mannered children ruining the atmosphere.

He told the Times he decided to introduce a five per cent discount for “polite children” after witnessing countless instances of kids behaving badly.

He told the paper: “We are not set up for kids we have no crèche, the spaces are tight, bottles can be knocked over and we have a clientele that spends a bit of money to be tranquil while eating well.

I have seen five-year-olds put their feet on the table and four-year-olds jumping from chair to chair, while parents do nothing.

“And when I complain the parents tell me 'My children can do what they want'."

Mr Ferrari said he introduced the discount six months ago and in that time has only given it to three families.

It “shows how rare good behaviour is”, he added.

An excellent idea, one that should be copied by restaurants everywhere!
