Balls Talks Balls
Ed Balls, Nanny's special little friend in the Educashun Department, has given us all the benefit of his special insight into the subject of educashun again.
This time he has waxed lyrical on SATs for six and seven year olds. In his view, children should not be told that they are sitting an exam before they sit it, as it might stress them out!
Balls in fact said that he was angry with schools that had informed parents in advance, when children in a primary school would sit their compulsory Key Stage 1 tests.
"I cannot believe they are doing that. They should not be doing that.
The best head teachers will ensure that no six or seven-year-old knows they are doing SATs. If you are telling pupils in Year 2 that they are doing SATs then that's the wrong thing. You should not be stressing the children."
In Lah Lah Land, where Balls lives, that might work. However, in reality that doesn't work:
1 Schools need to have routine, and exams need to be planned in advance.
2 Kids will face far more stressful events in their lives, giving them advance warning of an exam helps them prepare.
3 Learning to cope with stress is an important part of growth and development.
4 Rumours about upcoming SATs will inevitably leak, and cause more stress to the uniformed.
5 How else are you meant to prepare for an exam if you don't know one is coming?

I wonder if Labour got a group discount from the clinic that removed all the cabinet member's brains?
ReplyDeleteNanny needs to remove all political interference from education. (and the police and the NHS)
A good teacher knows what standard their pupils are at and whether the pupils are doing well or struggling with their work.
The problem with these types of tests is that, the schools may just focus on getting pupils through the tests, rather than on a good quality general education.
Kids should not be sitting exams at this age.
ReplyDeleteMore Nu Liebore interference in day to day life. Soon they will be assessing children at birth and handing out information on bringing up baby to Nanny's exact requirements.
Ugh...*shudder*that sounds about right though...
