I was gemused to read that there is yet more advice from some "experts" over how much people can "safely" eat.
In 1991 the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Food Policy (COMA) set out
that the average man should be eating 2,550 calories daily, and the average
woman 1,940.
However, after lengthy consultation, these limits have been raised by 55 calories for men and 139 calories for women.
Hoozah!
It seems that the old figures were based on "limited available evidence".
Errrmm..doesn't that mean that the old figures were in fact guesses?
In fact, I would go so far as to say that the "experts" who are so fond of telling us how much we can "safely" eat are talking bollocks.
For why?
Well, my loyal readers with long memories may well recall that in May this year I wrote the following:
"scientific research (carried out by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition) indicates that these limits (wrt calories) are too low. Men can in fact eat 2900 calories and women 2320."
So, which "experts" do you believe?
I suggest that we all ignore the "experts" and simply follow the old maxim "a little of what you fancy, does you good".

ReplyDeleteWhat the fuck is ‘the average man and woman’?
How much you can eat without gaining too much weight is entirely dependent on your level of activity. As kids we used to eat all sorts of food that is now described as unhealthy. First in line always got the corner bits of the pie and the skin of the custard!, but the difference was that we ran it off playing and having properly organized games lessons, where the overweight kids were encouraged to do more, not like now where they are allowed to miss PE to save their ‘feelings’.
If you sit in front of a TV or computer screen for much of the day you will gain weight when eating relatively little.
Nanny does get herself in a bit of a tiz when she moots her "One size fits all" policies.
ReplyDeleteSilly Nanny doesn't see that "equality" and "being the same" are two different things altogether.
If people follow the idea of everything in moderation, then they won't go far wrong.
What makes me laugh, are those that spend a fortune on labour saving devices, then have to spend a fortune on gym membership to burn off all those calories they've saved....Crazy!
We get about 9Kcal per gramme of fats - and around half of that from protein and carbs, so a 55Kcal shortage is something like 6-8 gramme 'too little food' per day.
ReplyDeleteAfter ten years of that - everyone 'should' now be 20-30 kg (3-5stone) underweight
I eat what I like when I like and in whatever quantity I like; a recent medical found my bodyweight index (which is bollox anyway) to be fine.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of them upping the alcohol ration?
