Nanny Wants To Censor The Internet

Nanny is using the excuse of terrorism and porn to censor the net.

However, as she already knows, encouraging/disseminating terrorism and extreme (eg child/animal) porn is already illegal!

The CPS Is Coming For You!

Make the most of the internet folks, and all those humorous images you share, whilst you can.

As per the FT:
"Internet abusers who formulate derogatory hashtags or post doctored images of their victims online could face prosecution under new legal guidelines.

The rules, set out by the Crown Prosecution Service, aim to make online “trolls” more accountable for their actions while trying not to stifle freedom of speech. Those who breach the regulations by harassing others on social media would be liable for criminal charges."

Nanny To Monitor Kids' Internet

As per Jen Persson on Schools Week:

"While the compulsory retention of every website visit for every person in the UK was recently debated and passed in the House of Commons in the Investigatory Powers Bill, the plans for statutory surveillance of every child’s Internet use, in schools and at home, has gone unnoticed.

Without Parliamentary or public discussion, children’s internet use will be monitored by third parties from September. This is despite widespread associated concerns – including choking off free speech, religious freedom, and staff feeling vulnerable – presented to the Joint Select Committee for Human Rights by experts in education and security legislation.

The brief paragraph 75 in The Department for Education (DfE) “New measures to keep children safe online at school and at home” statutory guidance Safeguarding in Schools, will impose a change from a duty ‘to consider’ web monitoring to one that ‘should ensure’ it for educational establishments, excluding 16-19 academies and free schools.

The supporting advice to which the Government response points, suggests actively monitoring all screen activity during a lesson from a central console using appropriate technology as a solution, even in circumstances that suggest low risk. And that logfile information should be able to identify an individual user, and be reviewed regularly. Pro-active monitoring is suggested where alerts are managed by a third-party provider.

The Department for Education’s summary response and advice however offers little practical support to school leaders how to concretely take these things into account, while still meeting human rights legislation.

Without explicit clarity on the practice of monitoring personal electronic devices not owned by the school, we risk a slippery descent into schools made complicit in a privacy invasion of family life."

Thus the stage is set for kids to become tools of the state, from childhood onwards until they die of old age.
"Give me a child for the first 5 years of his life and he will be mine forever."

Nanny Trump To Close The Internet

Presidential hopeful Nanny Trump appears to be having some form of mental breakdown.

As per The Independent:
"Children in America are “watching the internet and they want to be masterminds”, Trump said in a speech.

"We're losing a lot of people because of the internet," Trump said. "We have to see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening.

“We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that internet up in some ways. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people."
Good luck to the good people of America if Trump ever becomes President!

Celebrity Nudie Pics Shock Horror!

The media frenzy over the leaking on the internet of so called "celebrity" nudie pictures is all very well and diverting, if you have nothing better to write about or report on.

However, who would have thought that uploading naked pictures of yourself to the internet would mean that they would one day risk be "leaked" (or shared) to the world in general?

Who would have thought that?

Whilst you can't legislate against stupidity, it is doubtless this hooh hah will be used by Nanny as an excuse to impose controls on the net.

Turkish Twitter Workaround

My sympathies to the good people of Turkey who have been locked out of Twitter by Turkish Nanny.

For why?

It seems some people on Twitter have been accusing the Turkish government of being corrupt!

Surely not?

Turkish Nanny is so annoyed, that her chum Erdogan has vowed to "eradicate Twitter!".

Bold words indeed.

Bold, but hollow.

Turkish users can send Tweets using SMS. Avea and Vodafone text START to 2444. Turkcell text START to 2555.

To subscribe to a user's tweets via SMS, users can send ON [username] to their carrier's Twitter short code (i.e., 2444 or 2555 for most Turkish users). Twitter provides step-by-step instructions on its support page.

Anyhoo, for those people in Turkey who don't like to be censored and feel that they should be allowed to access Twitter, the above photo provides a means of accessing it without Turkish Nanny getting in the way.

Nanny Hates The Unsavoury

I am gemused to see that, in addition to Nanny claiming "super flagger" powers (wrt YouTube videos that may encourage terrorism), Nanny wants to go a few steps further and deal with material on the net that Nanny deems to be "unsavoury".

Nanny's security and immigration minister, James Brokenshire, told the Financial Times the government has to do more to deal with material “that may not be illegal but certainly is unsavoury and may not be the sort of material that people would want to see or receive.”

He said that Nanny wants to explore options where search engines and social media sites change their algorithms, so that unsavoury content is less likely to appear or is served up with more balanced material.

Would anyone care to define exactly what "unsavoury" content means?

One person's "savoury" is another's "unsavoury"!

Prats of The Week - Kingston Council

Ooh err missus, 'tis a wet and windy Monday morning and therefore time for me to award my prestigious and internationally renowned "Prats of The Week" Award.

This week it goes to Kingston Council.

For why?

For their £275K newly relaunched website that, according to the Surrey Comet, is riddled with errors.

Kingston Society member Matthew Rees tweeted:
“The new @RBKingston website is riddled with errors but I cannot report them as the contact us page is one of those that is broken.”
Classic!

David Cooper tweeted:
“It really is crap. They haven't managed to [do] a simple thing such as setting up redirects from old URLs to the new ones. Basic stuff.”
Conservative councillor Andrea Craig said councillors should have been involved.
“It is a great improvement but...we were not happy that, as usual members, were not consulted properly about it. There were spelling errors in it and there wasn't a small focus group of residents to canvass their opinion/input before implementation.”
A Kingston Council spokesman said:
“The new website is a huge improvement, already successfully handling about 500 transactions (e.g. payments, requests, bookings) a day.

It reflects what our customers have told us they want. Many people have complimented its design, new features, content, accessibility and mobile-friendly layout.

The council spent a great deal of time testing the site before it went live.

With several thousand pages of content there are bound to be a few things that need correcting.

We have a feedback form on the site for people to tell us what they think and help us to make the site even better.”
Clearly it was not tested rigorously enough!

Kingston Council, well deserving Prats of The Week!

Nanny Hates Social Media

Aside from wanting to stop us looking at boobies etc on the net, Nanny has a real dislike of social media (such as Twitter and Facebook) in general.

For why?

Just as when the printing press was invented, governments don't like it when people find ways to communicate with each other and criticise government policy etc. Thus social media, which abounds with criticism of government policy, is a particular anathema to Nanny.

She disguises her real reason for hating it by playing the "won't someone think of the children?" card; Nanny claims that children are misusing social media sites, and as such the sites should be regulated.

The solution to the "misuse" by teenagers etc of social media sites is not to regulate it to death, but to educate children as to the risks and consequences of sharing their entire life with strangers (in much the same way as I was warned as a kid not to accept sweets from strangers etc).

Additionally, parents may actually care to take an "interest" in their childrens' upbringing and possibly not give them mobile phones with cameras until they are sure that their kids understand the risks of posting photos etc.

This is not an area that should be regulated in a heavy handed manner by Nanny, who is intent on controlling what we say about her (cue Vietnam's recent ban on anything being posted on the internet other than "personal information").

Porn In Parliament

I am hugely gemused to see that our governing class and their servants, whilst "beavering" away in Parliament for the "good" of their voters, have managed to find the time to access porn sites on the internet.

The BBC reports that more than 300,000 attempts were made to access pornographic websites at the Houses of Parliament in the past year.

The data was released following a Freedom of Information request by Huffington Post UK, which published the story with the headline Oh Yes, Minister!

Now the really gemusing thing is that our "beloved" governing class has been banging on about introducing pron filters etc for the rest of us, as we are deemed not able to handle seeing people's naughty bits. Yet our elected representatives believe that they should be able to see naughty bits.

As per a parliamentary spokesperson quoted in the Huffington Post:
"We are not going to restrict Parliamentarians' ability to carry out research."
One rule for the governing class and another for the governed, 'twas ever thus!

To Be Or Not To Be Filtered?

I am gemused to see that Nanny's plans for filtering the internet of all "vile filth and debauchery" (as defined by her) have been proven to be absurd, as per a wee incident that occurred in the British Library the other day.

Mark Frosyth, an author, was researching Hamlet for a book that he is writing and needed to check a line from it using the library's wi-fi network.

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's right, he was denied access to an online version of Shakespeare's Hamlet because the text contained "violent content".

The British Library said the fault was caused by a newly installed wi-fi service from a third-party provider.

A spokesperson for the British Library, as per the BBC, said Hamlet had since been made accessible.
"The upgraded service has a web filter to ensure that inappropriate content cannot be viewed on-site.

We've received feedback from a number of users about sites which were blocked, but shouldn't have been. We're in the process of tweaking the service to unblock these sites."
The British Library defended its position, saying that it wanted to protect children visiting the building from content "such as pornography and gambling websites".

That's all very well and dandy, but the point of the British Library is to have an accessible record of everything that is legal. In fact, ever since 2011, the British Library has been archiving all my sites for future generations of researchers etc.

On the subject of debauchery etc, that seems to vex Cameron and others, I wonder if he and his internet filtering chums have ever read the Bible?

I ask because it contains a veritable smorgasbord of debauchery, lust, rape, sex, sodomy, violence and the sin of Onan (the modern day equivalent practised by some users of the net casting their seed upon their keyboards).

Will Cameron and the British Library be filtering the Bible?

Why Are So Many MPs Morons?

Why are MPs allowed to pass legislation on issues that they clearly do not understand or know anything about?

Step forward Claire Perry MP, as per BuzzFeed:
"The person most responsible for the British internet porn ban seems to have a difficult time constructing sentences about the internet."
Oh, and on the subject of morons, I give you Rhoda Grant MSP who wondered aloud:
“If there’s a watershed on the TV then why isn’t there one for the internet?”

Nanny Bans Porn

I see that Cameron is to make a speech today in which he will say that every internet user in the country will be asked whether they want to have access to pornography; ie there will be an automatic block on porn until the users tell their ISPs that they want the block removed.

Anyone care to define "porn"; eg will those searching for pictures of "Blue Tits" be banned from viewing the images?
