Brighton Council Bunny Huggers Apologise for Destroying Europe's Oldest and Longest Green Wall

On Wednesday I wrote the Brighton council had destroyed Europe's longest and oldest green wall, planted by the Victorians, which was classified as a wildlife reserve.

The bunny huggers in the council have now apologised, and admitted that the "pruning" went a bit too far.

As per the Argus:

“We’d like to apologise to our residents for the way we went about cutting back the stretch of Green Wall at the bottom of Duke’s Mound,

It should not have been cut down in this way. We are very sorry about this, and an investigation is underway to find out how this happened.

What is clear is that only minimal cutting back should have occurred, but we accept that we cut back much further than was necessary, and that this should not have happened to a Local Wildlife Site.

We are going to undertake a detailed investigation into how this happened, and how the Local Wildlife Site status (which was acknowledged at the planning stage) was not properly noted or considered as the detailed designs were worked up.”

In the meantime the council have sprayed a vast amount of seeds over the area, which has (for the time being) turned it green.

Brighton's Green Council Destroys Longest and Oldest Living Wall

The Madeira Terrace Green Wall was partially cut down for a 'possible' cycle lane

Fanatics come in all shapes and sizes, and are usually recognised by their single issue obsession with a particular idea/policy etc at the cost of everything else.

Step forward Brighton Council (run by the Greens) who have decreed that "green" is the way forward for Brighton, and that the spearhead for the "green revolution" will be the ever popular and much loved cyclists.

As such, in order to move the green revolution forward, the council have destroyed Europe's longest and oldest green wall, planted by the Victorians, which is classified as a wildlife reserve.

How does this help the green revolution? I hear you ask.

Simple, it provides room for a cycle lane!

The lesson here is clear, don't let fanatics take control of your council!

Brighton Nanny To Ban BBQs

Sadly for Brighton, it is currently in the clutches of the Green Party fanatics.

As such the city has to endure the Green's plan for it to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Step forward Brighton Nanny with a new plan which sets the direction for action on climate change by Brighton and Hove City Council to “accelerate the city’s transition to carbon neutrality by 2030”.

The Argus reports that included within it were proposals to invest in walking and cycling, replace street lighting with LEDs and a BBQ ban across parks and beaches.

The report proposed that “subject to consultation” the council would “end the use of single use BBQs on the beach and in parks and open spaces”.

Ban fun, ban tourists, shut the city......why not? That will ensure carbon neutrality!

Welcome To "Green" Brighton

When the lockdown was implemented, in order to provide extra space for people to exercise, Brighton council closed Madeira Drive on the seafront to traffic. This was a perfectly sensible and correct decision.

However, now that lockdown has been eased and the Green party has taken control of the council (thanks to labour's issues with anti-Semitism), there has been a considerable degree of mission creep.

The council has decreed that Madeira Drive is to remain shut, and that cycle lanes will be expanded and added all the way along the seafront. The theory being that this will reduce pollution and will provide a jolly place for people to walk and cycle.

Guess what?

That theory has proven to be utter bollocks!

Unsurprisingly the closure of the road and expansion of cycle lanes has caused gridlock elsewhere, which of course means an increase in pollution.

As to the economic consequences of the closure of Madeira Drive, well here's a little list of the damage it will do:

1 Closing off Madeira Drive to traffic reduces the number of tourists and visitors to the beachfront, and will therefore negatively impact business revenues of the businesses there (and in other parts of the city).

2 Reduced business revenues means reduced taxes, council revenues (eg over £1M per annum in parking fees) etc.

3 Madeira Drive is a destination, not a thoroughfare. Brighton is a tourist city, if you eliminate a major destination you will reduce the number of tourists coming here.

4 There is very little footfall along Madeira Drive, in spite of the closure, come winter it will be next to nothing.

5 The cost of stewards is a waste of resources.

6 There will be a rent strike, and the council's revenues will take a hit.

7 Closure is in breach of the lease agreements with seafront businesses, they will expect compensation and sue the council for breach of contract.

8 Madeira Drive, even though it has been sunny, has not attracted throngs of extra people cycling or walking. Come winter it will be completely deserted.

The council is economically illiterate and refuses to grasp the fact that Brighton is a tourist destination, if you make tourists feel unwelcome they will go elsewhere.
