Nanny Bans Robin Hood

Nanny in the shape of Nottingham Council’s decision to remove Robin Hood from the city logo is a baffling and misguided move that has left many residents and admirers of the legendary folk hero outraged. This decision not only erases a significant part of Nottingham’s cultural heritage but also undermines the city’s identity and historical significance.

Robin Hood is more than just a character from folklore; he is a symbol of Nottingham’s rich history and its enduring spirit of resistance and justice. By removing him from the city logo, Nottingham Council is effectively severing a vital link to the past and alienating a community that takes pride in its unique heritage.

The council’s justification for this change, citing a need for a more “inclusive” and “modern” image (some shite squiggle), falls flat. Robin Hood’s story is one of inclusivity and standing up for the oppressed. His legend resonates with people from all walks of life, and his removal from the logo is a disservice to the very principles he represents.

Moreover, this decision appears to be a wasteful exercise in rebranding that does little to address the real issues facing the city. Instead of focusing on superficial changes, Nottingham Council should be directing its efforts towards meaningful improvements that benefit the community.

In conclusion, Nottingham Council’s decision to remove Robin Hood from the city logo is a cretinous and ill-advised move that disregards the city’s rich history and cultural significance. It’s time for the council to listen to its residents and restore the iconic symbol that truly represents Nottingham.

Brighton's Green Council Destroys Longest and Oldest Living Wall

The Madeira Terrace Green Wall was partially cut down for a 'possible' cycle lane

Fanatics come in all shapes and sizes, and are usually recognised by their single issue obsession with a particular idea/policy etc at the cost of everything else.

Step forward Brighton Council (run by the Greens) who have decreed that "green" is the way forward for Brighton, and that the spearhead for the "green revolution" will be the ever popular and much loved cyclists.

As such, in order to move the green revolution forward, the council have destroyed Europe's longest and oldest green wall, planted by the Victorians, which is classified as a wildlife reserve.

How does this help the green revolution? I hear you ask.

Simple, it provides room for a cycle lane!

The lesson here is clear, don't let fanatics take control of your council!

Nanny Steals Fat Children From Parents

It would seem that allowing your children to become fat, is now deemed to be child abuse by Nanny.

The Argus reports that two teenage children from Sussex have been taken from the care of their parents after council social services staff told a family court judge of concerns about their weight.

Judge Gillian Ellis ruled the youngsters should go into long-term foster care - and described the case as "very sad and unusual".

West Sussex County Council has responsibility for the children's welfare and previously provided Fitbits and paid for gym memberships for the pair.

The family has also been involved with Weight Watchers.

But Judge Ellis said that, months after family court proceedings began, there had been no reduction in the children's weight.

The judge said the children's parents had not seemed to understand "the seriousness" of concerns raised by social services staff and had failed to "set boundaries" or "promote healthy eating and exercise".

She said the children needed the chance to "learn ways of living more healthily" and to "improve their health by losing weight".

Detail of the case emerged in a ruling by Judge Ellis published online on Wednesday.

The judge had considered evidence at a private family court hearing in Sussex late in 2020.

She said the family could not be identified in media reports of the case.

Judge Ellis said West Sussex County Council was the local authority involved.

The judge said there were also concerns about poor home conditions and a lack of guidance on personal care.

"Everyone agrees that this is a very sad and unusual case, of a loving family, where the parents meet many of the basic needs of the children, but the local authority has been concerned that the parents are not meeting the children's health needs, in that both children are severely overweight, and the parents have shown an inability to help the children manage this condition.

The case was such an unusual one because the children had clearly had some very good parenting, as they were polite, bright, and engaging."

The parents did not seem to understand the seriousness of the local authority concerns.

They failed to set boundaries for the children, or to promote healthy eating and exercise."

The children had failed to engage consistently in exercise despite the local authority providing Fitbits and paying for gym memberships.

The children were supposed to provide recordings from their Fitbits but this had not been done.

The mother blamed lockdown for the inability to exercise but exercise could still be taken in the home or by walking outside.

The attendance of the family at Weight Watchers had been inconsistent."

This doesn't seem to right to me at all!

Brighton's £154K Covid Cops - Money Well Wasted!

Brighton and Hove News reports that Brighton will be recruiting four Covid Cops (at an initial cost of £154K).

The four “covid cops” will police businesses across Brighton and Hove and have the power to shut down rule-breakers and fine them £4,000.

The officials – to be known as covid information officers – will be expected to provide advice and guidance in most cases before resorting to enforcement.

Those taken on in the temporary posts are to help ensure that businesses – including shops, cafés, pubs and bars – are covid safe.

The government has granted £154,000 to fund the posts from this month until the end of February. After three months, the service will be reviewed and adapted as required.

The officials will have the power to serve notices and fines ranging from “coronavirus improvement notices” and “coronavirus immediate restriction notices” to “coronavirus restriction notices” and fixed penalty notices.

As to whether they are really needed remains doubtful, given that every other official in Brighton appears to have powers to levy fines and poke their noses into other people's business!

The council’s Policy and Resources Committee was told that the covid cops would join other council officials in being granted enforcement powers under the coronavirus regulations.

They include field officers as well as environmental health, trading standards and licensing officers and the council’s seafront team.

The 'Elf of Safety Strikes Again In Queens Park Brighton

I see that the 'Elf of Safety Officer from Brighton council has erected (can I say erected before the watershed?) another set of "safety " barriers for the one year behind schedule Queens Park jetty.

Let us trust that they don't suffer the same fate as the last set of barriers, namely get thrown into the pond!

Shropshire Council Appoints £1K Per Day Pothole Consultant

Shropshire is spending about £1,000 a day on a potholes consultant.

In an email seen by the BBC, Shropshire Council's boss said the appointment was part of a range of measures to speed up repairs of the county's roads.

It is a little more than "ironic", that despite professing poverty councils are still more than happy to piss our money away!

Brighton Queen's Park Jetty Delayed Over Health and Safety

A jetty over Brighton Queen’s Park pond is set to open in March – almost a year late following health and safety delays.

The jetty was built in 2019 after park visitors were asked to choose how to spend money contributed by local developers – either to rework its quiet garden to open it up and deter drug users, or to create a dipping platform.

The platform project was chosen and the jetty was completed to the original designs by May – but a surprise inspection by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents meant it has remained fenced off ever since.

Brighton council decided that issues raised by the inspectors meant it needed extra work to make it safe for buggies and small children – and delays to that work meant it has stayed closed.

The work has yet to commence.

It beggars belief that the health and safety issues that apparently have caused these delays, were not identified and addressed at the planning and design stage.

It should also be noted that:

1 The RoSPA has no legal jurisdiction wrt health and safety issues.

2 The rest of the perimeter of the pond does not have any fencing or any devices to stop buggies rolling into it.

3 The temporary fencing (seen in the photo above) to stop people walking on it has fallen over, again!

4 The temporary fencing has now been thrown into the pond!

In other words the delay, and planned improvements (which have not yet started) are for nowt!

Nanny's Sausage Roll Fine

As loyal readers know, Nanny never misses an opportunity to screw us for money, as Sally-Ann Fricker has found to her cost when Nanny fined her £150.

Ms Fricker's crime?

She fed a bit of sausage roll to a pigeon!

Ms Fricker said she was out shopping in Bath with her daughter and her two young boys when a pigeon landed in front of them.

She broke off a corner of the snack and threw it to the bird which immediately flew off with the morsel.

Ms Fricker's daughter, Toni Bradley, said her mother was approached "seconds later" by the enforcement officer after throwing the food.

He told her she would be fined £150, but this would be reduced to £100 if she paid it within 14 days.

Now, following the publicity, Nanny is now reviewing the fine!

Nanny Bans Dangerous Dahlias

Nanny has donned her jackboots again and have ordered a couple to remove a bed of dahlias from in front of their house because they are a ‘danger’ to drivers.

Brian and Sally Williams have been tending to the dahlias and shrubs on the narrow Hollin House Lane in Loxley, near Sheffield, for the last 28 years. They originally planted the blooms to encourage wildlife and bring colour to the area.

However, Sheffield council have sent them a letter telling them they have just a week to remove them or pay for it to be done by the authority. P

The couple’s daughter, Elizabeth Williams, said they were ‘absolutely devastated’ and that the flowers had been the only thing that helped her father through ill health.

Sheffield council told the BBC:
We have sympathy with the nearby homeowner who has attempted to stop cars driving over the highway verge on what is a very narrow, single-track lane.

Unfortunately the placing of flower beds, as well as stones and water barrels, on the highway outside the property, could be a danger to other road users."
Why take action now, after 28 years?

One single anonymous complaint!

The Metro reports that neighbours have set up a petition to get the council to change their mind and it already has more than 3,000 signatures.

Nanny Hates Poor Fat People

Data, from Public Health England (PHE), compared levels of deprivation with numbers of takeaways such as chip shops, burger bars and pizza places and found that deprived areas such as Blackpool and parts of Manchester and Liverpool have five times more fast food outlets than affluent areas.

As a result PHE wants local authorities to ban new takeaways.

PHE chief nutritionist Dr Alison Tedstone is quoted by the BBC:
"Local authorities have the power to help support people in making healthier choices.

They need to question whether these fast food hotspots are compatible with their work to help families and young children live healthier lives."
The use of the word "choice" seems disingenuous, given that Nanny wants to ban certain food types from the diets of "poor" people.

If people want to eat themselves to death, why shouldn't they be allowed to?

"Safer" 20mph Zones Aren't "Safer"

Oh dear it seems that Nanny's fetish for reducing road speeds (for our own protection) has made the roads more dangerous.

Bath and North East Somerset Council spent £871,000 bringing in the 13 new speed zones just 12 months ago.

One year on, a report has found that the rate of people killed or seriously injured has gone up in seven out of the 13 new 20mph zones.

The review of the traffic control measures warns that this is a problem nationally. As per The Telegraph:
"There is no simple explanation for this adverse trend but it could be that local people perceive the area to be safer due to the presence of the 20mph restrictions and thus are less diligent when walking and crossing roads, cycling or otherwise travelling."

Despite the council's own report concluding that there is "little in the way of persuasive argument for continuing the programme in the future", deputy leader Patrick Anketell-Jones has admitted there simply isn't the money available to reverse the 20mph zones.
"It has cost over £800,000 to roll out the 20mph zone and it would probably cost the same to reverse them.

We just haven't got the money. I'm pretty sure the 20mph zones will stay in place for the foreseeable future."
Money wasted on a scheme that in fact harms Nanny's citizens!

Nanny Bans Free Air

Rather bizarrely, Nanny's chums in Tower Hamlets have banned the good people of Isambard's Cycles from offering customers free air via a pump.

For why?

It seems that the pump is an "obstruction".

However, if the bicycle shop paid Nanny for providing free air the pump would then no longer be an obstruction!

The Bare Faced Cheek of Gnomes

My sympathies to Lauren Perry, a keen gardener living in Wistatston, who has been ordered by Cheshire East council to remove two garden gnomes from outside his house.

For why?

They are baring their backsides to passersby and risk distracting motorists.

Mr Perry got a stern letter from officials claiming the gnomes could cause a "distraction" to motorists as they light up at night, and warning they would cause an accident.

They told Mr Perry to clear the offending items within seven days or workman would be called out to remove them - and bill him for the cost.

The letter, from Cheshire East Council senior highways officer Andrea Bickerton, is quoted by the Telegraph:
"It has been brought to our attention that several ornamental displays and items have been placed on the highway verge in Wistaston.

I am sure that your intentions are meant to be humorous and light-hearted. Unfortunately, not everyone shares the same sentiment.

You are required to therefore remove them at your earliest opportunity. If you fail to remove them, the Council will remove them and recover from you the expense of doing so."
The question is, who the hell reported the gnomes to Nanny?

Mr Perry said:
"I feel very disappointed. My daughter bought them for Father's Day as a bit of fun as she knows I like a laugh. These things are in discount stores in their hundreds on shelves.

How can they be classed as offensive? I put them up two weeks ago - no one ever approached me to complain or ask for them to be removed. The next thing I know, this heavy-handed letter arrives.

I've worked with others for four years to turn a piece of land which had been left overgrown, covered in broken bottles and bricks, into a more attractive area. It's all been self-funded as we were turned down for funding by the parish council.

We even bought the sign that says 'Wonderful Wistaston' - now I feel like replacing it with one that says 'Miserable Wistaston'.

All we've tried to do over the past four years is improve the area where we live - and it's all been self-funded. I could get many more volunteers if I wanted, the support on the whole in the village has been tremendous.

But not from the parish council. There are certain people who have lived in communities for many years who don't like newcomers, regardless of their experience.

We placed a nice colourful bench on the land, and it was ripped up a few weeks later for no reason!

We've put it back since, and concreted it in."
A Cheshire East Council spokesman said:
"While we do not wish to spoil people's fun, there is a safety issue here as such objects could easily cause a distraction to motorists and other road users, leading to an accident.

We received a complaint about these ornaments which, while seemingly harmless, are designed to attract attention and light up at night.

Therefore, we have to take steps to have them removed in the interests of road safety and the safety of pedestrians."
A very sad individual with too much time on his/her hands must have reported it. Such individuals are Nanny's eyes and ears!

Nanny Fines Five Year Old - #LemonadeGate

Nanny and her councils can be nasty pieces of work, as Andre Spicer's five year old daughter found to her cost.

My thanks to a loyal reader who pointed me to a summary of what occurred.

The girl was fined £150 by Nanny's gestapo from Tower Hamlets for trying to sell lemonade in the street.

Andre Spicer said his daughter burst into tears and told him “I’ve done a bad thing” after enforcement officers read out a lengthy legal letter before issuing him the notice.

Mr Spicer said four officers stormed up to the table just 30 minutes after the pair had set up the stand, where they were selling one large cup of the fizzy drink for £1 and a small glass for 50p.

The five-year-old and Mr Spicer, a professor at City University, were given the fine for "trading without a permit" after they set up the make-shift stall near their home in Mile End.

After it was contacted by the Standard, Tower Hamlets Council promised to cancel the fine "immediately" and said it would contact the family to apologise.

No surprises there then, when Nanny is confronted she backs down!

A spokeswoman for the council said:
We are very sorry that this has happened. We expect our enforcement officers to show common sense, and to use their powers sensibly. This clearly did not happen.

The fine will be cancelled immediately and we will be contacting Professor Spicer and his daughter to apologise.”

Nanny's Nice Little Earner - The Litter Police

The BBC's Panorama has exposed one of Nanny's nice little earners, namely finin g people fro dropping litter.

A private company acting as the "litter police" for dozens of councils pays officers a bonus for issuing fines.

One officer from Kingdom Services, a leading enforcement company, claimed that his bonus one month was £987.

Other officers were filmed handing out £75 fines for tiny pieces of dropped orange peel and poured-away coffee.

Kingdom told Panorama that its competency allowance was not a paid incentive for officers to issue fines.

Councils are increasingly using private companies such as Kingdom, based in Cheshire, to enforce the Environmental Protection Act.

Kingdom currently has about 28 contracts with local authorities and last year saw its profits jump 30% to £9m.

Guess what?

The company frequently splits the proceeds of the fines with the councils!
