Booze Prevents Dementia

It seems that abstaining from alcohol in middle age may increase the risk of dementia in later life, according to a new study published in the BMJ.

Analysis of more than 9,000 people found those who never touched a drop were around 50 per cent more likely to develop the degenerative condition compared to those who drink moderately.

These results challenge  Nanny's NHS advice, which recommends going teetotal to reduce dementia risk.

As a small caveat, whilst Nanny and her acolytes will still go on about the dangers of booze, I wonder if anyone has thought to consider that it may not be the booze that is dangerous but the chemicals in some of the drinks and mixers that people throw down their gullets these days?

Just a thought...

Booze Boosts The Brain

My thanks to a loyal reader who pointed me to an amusing article about booze.

Seemingly a 30-year study by the University of California, San Diego has concluded that over-65s who indulge in up to three alcoholic drinks a day can look forward to a happy and healthy retirement.

In fact, they said, moderate to heavy drinkers are more likely to live to the age of 85 without dementia or other cognitive impairments than non-drinkers.

Lead author Dr Linda McEvoy is quoted by the Mail:
"This study is unique because we considered men and women's cognitive health at late age and found that alcohol consumption is not only associated with reduced mortality, but with greater chances of remaining cognitively healthy into older age."
The researchers found that people who drank 'moderate to heavy' amounts of alcohol five to seven days a week were doubly likely to be cognitively healthy than non-drinkers.

Cheers!

Nanny's £55 Dementia Incentive

When I was a wee lad my dentist was prone to find the need to drill and fill my teeth.

Was I a sugar fiend, with rotting teeth?

No!

I have never had a sweet tooth and any minor decay on my toothy pegs could have been left to heal (yes, minor decay can heal) or sit there without doing any harm, without the need to drill and fill.

For why then did my dentist always reach for the drill?

Because Nanny paid him per filling; ie he was incentivised to find problems, and to enact incorrect solutions, where there were none.

Step forward to the present day and Nanny pays GP's to inflict all manner of bollocks tests on us (eg blood pressure readings).

Today we learn of a very dangerous development, Nanny will pay family doctors £55 for every patient they diagnose with dementia under a new NHS England scheme.

This of course will incentivise doctors to diagnose every slightly forgetful person they see with dementia, putting those persons through unnecessary stress and intrusive/invasive state interference.

Unsurprisingly the scheme has been condemned as an “ethical travesty”!

Coming soon will be "Well Elderly Persons Clinics"!

Nanny Bans Cooked Meat

I see that some research carried out at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, indicates that browning meat in the oven, grill or frying pan (ie cooking meat) produces chemicals which may increase the risk of developing dementia.

Advanced glycation end (AGE) products have been linked to diseases such as type-2 diabetes. Mice fed a high-AGEs diet had a build-up of dangerous proteins in the brain and impaired cognitive function. AGEs occur during the cooking process.

A short-term analysis of people over 60 suggested a link between high levels of AGEs in the blood and cognitive decline.

However, whilst (according to experts) the results were "compelling" they do not provide "definitive answers".

Derek Hill, a professor of medical imaging sciences at University College London, is quoted by the BBC:
"The results are compelling.

Because cures for Alzheimer's disease remain a distant hope, efforts to prevent it are extremely important, but this study should be seen as encouraging further work, rather than as providing definitive answers.

But it is grounds for optimism - this paper adds to the body of evidence suggesting that using preventative strategies might reduce the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in society and that could have very positive impact on us all."
Dr Simon Ridley, from the charity Alzheimer's Research UK, said:
"Diabetes has previously been linked to an increased risk of dementia, and this small study provides some new insight into some of the possible molecular processes that may link the two conditions.

It's important to note that the people in this study did not have dementia. This subject has so far not been well studied in people, and we don't yet know whether the amount of AGEs in our diet might affect our risk of dementia."
Whilst those with scientific backgrounds are clearly flagging that the findings are not definitive, and that further work and study is required, pound to a penny the scaremongers and Nanny's little helpers will mount a campaign against cooked meat.

Therefore in one step we will end up back to the age of the caveman (pre discovery of fire) when we ate raw meat.

Still, I for one am very fond of steak tartar.

Steak tartars all round!
