Happy St George's Day!
Happy St George's Day everyone!
As we take today to celebrate being English, we can also take a little time to digest yesterday's budget.
A remarkable piece of engineering by Darling and Brown, based on the fantasy that growth will shoot back to 3.5% by 2011. They did what every amateur schoolboy physicist does, make the results fit the theory.
Regrettably for us, living in the real world, growth will not hit 3.5% in 2011 and Darling's "budget" will fall apart.
Aside from the fact that Treasury forecasts are always bollocks, even if they were for once accurate we find ourselves facing a debt of £1 Trillion.
Yes, read that figure again, £1 Trillion!
Given that we are now facing the worst economic situation in living memory, thanks to Brown's debt boom and unwillingness to put something away for a rainy day during the boom times, Nanny's expenditure will have to be cut.
Factoid: I warned about this in July 2003 "The Road To Nowhere - The Delusion of the Burgeoning Public Sector"
The question is will she cut areas that genuinely add no value; eg diversity awareness roles, non jobs in local councils, spin departments, government misinformation films on smoking/eating/boozing, the ego massaging Olympics etc?
This financial disaster, brought to us by ZaNuLabour, does offer an opportunity to roll back the frontiers of the state.
However, the short term effects will be very unpleasant, as all those people who have had their livelihoods paid for by Nanny start to experience the real world. We can expect some very unpleasant confrontations in the coming months, as the reality hits home.

I was watching Sky News this morning, and on-screen there was a 'debt-counter', ticking at a phenomenal rate as it counted spiralling Goonvernment debt and borrowing numbers.
ReplyDeleteFor those who weren't able to mentally calculate the speed at which our debt is rising, Eamonn Holmes helpfully pointed out that it's rising at £300,000 per MINUTE.
Which put me in mind of a song...
D
As I mooted on John Redwood's Diary yesterday, the budget was little more than a series of traps set for the next Conservative government.
ReplyDeleteWhat has struck me though was that although it was clearly Mr Brown's budget, when Mr darling was speaking I could not see Mr Brown's lips moving.....Once Brown is rightly kicked out at the next GE, assuming they are not banned, he will be able to make a good living as a vent on the cabaret circuit.
Opppps
ReplyDeleteSorry Ken, almost forgot;
HAPPY SAINT GEORGE@S DAY to you too.
Regards
Tonk....ENGLISH and very PROUD!!!
Happy St Georges Day!

1 trillion...
ReplyDeleteIf you count one pound per second, after 1 hour you will have three thousand six hundred quid - Not bad for an hours work.
If you count out 1 trillion pounds at the same rate, one pound per second, without eating or sleeping - in fact without doing anything else at all - it would take you thirty two thousand years.
Happy St George's Day everyone.
Happy St George's Day - bloody hell we need a saint on a charger to save us now.
ReplyDeleteOff to do the roast dinner and sup some ale and cider. On this day of all days, up yours to Nanny and to all the plastic patriots who think donning a made in China plastic football shirt, £55 or so I believe, adorned with the Cross of St George and swilling pints of German lager in front the footy on the telly watching a bunch of ovepaid drama queens fall over on the pithc at the slightest tap makes them good patriotic Englishmen.
Further to Smithy. Someone gave me a leaflet with a terrifying picture of Brown and the caption:
ReplyDelete"A trillion pounds is an almost inconceivable amount. Here is a way to think of it.
"If on the day Queen Victoria died you had taken £25 million pounds in banknotes and put them on a bonfire, and then you repeated this every single day since, you would still be two years short of burning a trillion pounds"
(Knock a couple of months off now, but the principle's the same)
Happy St George's Day to you, Ken, and all those who, like Tonk and myself, are ENGLISH and PROUD of the fact!
ReplyDeleteA brilliant song, Dungeekin!
Ken asked: "The question is will she cut areas that genuinely add no value; eg diversity awareness roles, non jobs in local councils, spin departments, government misinformation films on smoking/eating/boozing, the ego massaging Olympics etc?

I very much regret that I can answer that: two chances, NO chance and a dog's chance (at least while Brown and co are ruining, er sorry, running, the country.

Bloody hell! (Excuse the Anglo-Saxon!)
I notice the Scottish mafia that form the bulk of the cabinet contrived to raise the tax on alcohol just in time for St George's day.
ReplyDeleteBeing another proud englishman, the only solace I can take from that appalling Budget was that it was concocted by the ruling Scottish cabal. Is there no political machinery that can get rid of them before June 2010? we are all tired and weary of them.
ReplyDelete" . . . an opportunity to roll back the frontiers of the state."
ReplyDeleteKen,
This is the crux of the matter, isn't it? Amidst all the gloom, most of us keep plugging along, and would prefer to do so without a half dozen of Nanny's minions gazing over our shoulders and scrutinizing our every move.
Is it really asking so much to be allowed to live our own lives, in our own way? (I feel a bit like Frank Sinatra here, but I hope you take my point.)
Black Sea,
ReplyDeleteI was on a business trip to Egypt once when President Sadat was shot.
The day after, we were travelling by car from Cairo to Alexandria and suddenly stopped. A few cars ahead a donkey had been run over. We got out and went up to see what was happening. The donkey was dead and the old farmer whose only possession it was was crying in the road next to it.. During the conversation, we got our driver to ask the farmer if he had heard about Sadat.
The reply came back that the farmer didn't even know who Sadat was.
That's when it dawned on me that most of the world's people do indeed just want to keep plugging along, with as little interference from the political shysters as possible.
