Traffic Cam?

Traffic CamToday is the so called "day of action" by an assortment of "characters" etc, who are intent on "stopping the City" and haranguing world leaders at Gordon Brown's ego driven G20 summit.

As one would expect, Nanny is keen to ensure that minimum disruption to her choreographed event takes place; as such, she is using all the paraphernalia at her command (eg CCTV) to keep matters under her control.

Now here's the funny thing, Nanny's own rules have caused her to switch off a whole set of CCTV cameras in the Westminster area.

For why?

Nanny's chums in the Department for Transport (DfT) have ruled that 33% of Westminster's CCTV cameras "do not fully meet the resolution standards required", and must be switched off before today (April Fool's Day).

The cameras cost local taxpayers £15M but, for reasons unclear for such a large outlay, they do not meet the quality required under the Traffic Management Act, which comes into force on 1 April.

The council have been desperately seeking "dispensation" from the transport secretary, Geoff Hoon. As at the time of writing it is unclear as to whether Hoon has granted "dispensation".

Only in the Nanny state would such a "jobsworth" farce actually arise. Commonsense should dictate that, under special circumstances such as this, the CCTV could be allowed to function for a couple of days before shut down.

There are of course two issues here:

1 Why did Westminster waste £15M on cameras that do not comply with the law?

2 Why are traffic cameras (let us not forget that is what the taxpayer has been told he/she has bought) being used for other purposes (do not be under any naive assumption that only during a G20 summit would these traffic cams be used to monitor people etc)?

  1. Some commenters on other blogs have suggested that this idea may be to stop evidence being recorded of police officers mistreating protestors....A few years ago I would have laughed at such a suggestion as being that of a conspiracy theorist and not anything to do with the real world, however I am not so sure now....Last night I was somewhat forced to watch a crap programme that I normally would not, namely cops with cameras....I was shocked to see the police acting like thugs and bullies and could not believe this was the same force that Dixon of Dock Green was once a member of.
They appeared to provoke suspects into kicking off and spoke to suspects as if they were shit....I accept most probably were but, it is not the police's job to act as the judiciary. Anyway, I digress, it has already been made an offence to photopgraph a police officer and therefore, if a protestor used a cameraphone to film bad behaviour by the police, I suspect it would be deemed inadmissable.....This story has caused me to consider very carefully my thoughts about the relationship between the state, the police and the rest of us.

    I agree.
Last night it was reported that the storm troopers, oppps sorry, our police farce(sic) herded the protestors into a pen and held them there for several hours without letting them leave.
Much later, they allowed the protestors to leave, one at a time when they had all been individually searched and photographed.....This smells of a police state....I do not support those that rioted but, there were many ordinary right thinking, law abiding, decent people caught up in this episode. I believe the type of person recruited and the training given to those police recruits has changed and they have become very military like in their style and operating proceedures.

I was also saddened to read about a family that was burned to death in their home where the neighbours were held back by the police, preventing those neighbours from attempting to rescue the adults and three children. It is reported that the frantic mother was upstairs at the window begging for someone to get the children out...The officers prevented those neighbours that wanted to attempt a rescue on, yep that's right, good ol' 'Elf'n'safety grounds.....In my opinion, a few years ago, the police themselves would have attempted a rescue and buggar 'Elf'n'Safety....I bet Dixon would not have stood by!!

Alas, the days when our policemen and women were like Dixon of Dock Green and well-respected all over the world have long gone. With a few honourable exceptions, today's policemen are a bunch of w*****s!

the police have always been the first line ofdefence for the state - a civil army - now they more obviously carry this function. The MET is notorious at doing what it likes, including killing people - because they can get away with murder.

The police are, have been and always will be there as a force to keep the populus in line. They are not there to maintain your liberty instead they will use the law as far as possible to keep you under the thumb.

BTW, I'm not a raging anarchist or the like, I just see things for what they are. It is a myth that people need to give up that the police are your freind. Remember it was the police force who were begging the government for the right to lock you up without charge for 90 days...
