Kudos to Oxford University Press for making utter knobheads of themselves.
For why?
OUP has decreed that its writers must not mention pigs, sausages or pork-related words in children's books, lest Jews and Muslims be offended.
Suffice to say this has brought down a torrent of well deserved ridicule upon OUP.
A spokesman for OUP is unrepentant, and is quoted by the Telegraph:
"OUP's commitment to its mission of academic and educational excellence is absolute.Feel free to list as many pork related words as you can think of, I can then submit a draft "Porkasaurus" to the OUP for publication.
Our materials are sold in nearly 200 countries, and as such, and without compromising our commitment in any way, we encourage some authors of educational materials respectfully to consider cultural differences and sensitivities."

Oh, please! Just when I thought we'd reached the point when this political correct nonsense couldn't go any further! I suppose next they'll ban beef and any reference to cows, as many Indians hold the cow to be a sacred animal. In my opinion this is a load of bs, A pity that whoever comes up with these daft ideas cannot channel their energy and resources into dealing with real problems! Can't they see that such daft ideas encourage the very attitudes they are attempting to stamp out, and actually cause problems rather than solving them?
ReplyDeleteWell, if OUP are gong to be offended on somebody's behalf then why are they not offended on behalf of people who consider Halal & Kosher methods to be animal cruelty?
ReplyDeleteI get a little upset by the 100 or so verses in the Quran that call for Muslims to make war with infidels including cutting off their heads and fingers (wherever they may be hiding) for Islamic rule.
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance of having these references removed from their book?
