The Art of Sitting

Chair
I am gemused to read that Auntie (the BBC) is offering staff, who are moving to Salford Quays, a choice of three models of swivel chair.

That's nice:)

Once they have chosen the type of chair they want, Auntie then teaches them (via a "Chair Champion") how to sit down in order to ensure that they are following health and safety procedures.

The Dangers of Folding Chairs

Chair
Oh dear, it seems that the party animals attending the Isle of Wight Festival have been banned by Nanny from doing one of the things that they love most.

No, not that!

I mean that Nanny has banned them from bringing folding chairs onto the site. Festival goers were told to leave their seats at the entrance to the site at Seaclose Park in Newport.

For why?

Health and Safety (and for a better customer experience)!

Sounds like a load of old bollocks to me.

Now here's the funny thing, festival goers have been banned from BRINGING folding chairs. However, according to reports, it seems that festival goers were still allowed to buy chairs within the festival site.

Funny that, isn't it?

Ker Farking Ching!

Christmas Decorations

Christmas Decorations
In keeping with the season, you will be pleased to know that I spent this weekend erecting and mounting (can I say that?) the Frost household Christmas decorations.

Please be assured that, in keeping with the ethical principles of this website:
  • The decorations are fire hazards

  • No "pull" or "load bearing" tests were carried out

  • Some decorations have been hung from light fittings (which have not been tested for load bearing)

  • The coloured lights and electronic snowman have not be checked by a qualified electrician

  • I used a chair to stand on, when mounting and erecting many of them

  • I have not received any training wrt standing on a chair, or indeed mounting/erecting decorations

  • The electrical parts of the decorations add to the CO2 emissions of the planet

  • Many extra plug extensions have been added, without being checked for safety

  • The wires for the extensions and the lights present a considerable trip hazard
All in all, a typical British Christmas!

Nanny can keep her nose out.

I am fully confident that, ignoring the effects of booze and excess food, I and my loved ones stand a better than 50% chance of making it through the Christmas period in one piece.

By the way, talking of food and booze, don't forget to use the most excellent links on this site to buy your booze and food for the festive season.

How about a Nanny thong?

The Trouble With Chairs

The Trouble With Chairs
Those of you with long memories may recall that I wrote about Greater Manchester fire service's rather strange chair edict last year.

You don't?

Oh well, let me refresh your memory.

Lats year Nanny's chums in the Greater Manchester Fire Service drew up a four-page safety manual, to instruct crews on how to sit in a reclining chair.

The story, as the old saying goes, doesn't end there...dear me no!

On the normal 15-hour night shift, firemen are allotted time to rest between emergencies and running through their training drills.

They are allowed to have a rest for up to three hours, but they are not allowed to go to sleep...errrr work that one out?

Those who work for the Greater Manchester fire service have been instructed that they can only rest in prescribed reclining chairs, only after they have been trained to use them of course.

It doesn't stop there.

It would seem that 3 "very naughty", but highly experienced firemen, are facing disciplinary action.

What was their crime?

Being drunk on duty?

No!

Being unfit to perform their duties?

No!

Being bolshy?

No!

Their crime was...wait for it...wait for it..."involvement in the use of unauthorised rest facilities".

The "naughty three" found it to be more to sleep on the hard station floor, than on one of Nanny's £400 reclining chairs.

Nanny's fire chiefs are looking into claims that the "naughty three" defied orders to rest only on the £400 reclining chairs, which were installed as a replacements for beds in Greater Manchester's 41 fire stations last year.

They are accused of breaking regulations, by deciding it was more comfortable to use their own sleeping bags and bed down on the floor.

Not unsurprisingly the unions have described the policy as ridiculous, saying their members are being treated like children.

When the chairs were installed the firemen were also told that they could only use specially issued blankets, not their own bedding.

The "naughty three", including a watch commander, were found to have breached the reclining chair orders after a locker inspection found sleeping bags stashed away.

Director of human resources, Anita Wainwright, said...seemingly with a straight face:

"Risk-assessed facilities have been provided

for rest only, not sleep.

However, if a firefighter were to doze off on the

rest facilities provided, a common sense approach is adopted
."

"Risk assessed facilities"????

Whenever I hear the "risk assessment" phrase, I instinctively reach for my sick bag.

Why can't Nanny call a spade a spade?

Patronising Bullshit!

The firemen note that the chairs are not comfortable for a proper rest.

One is quoted as saying:

"This is bureaucracy gone barmy

We cannot use pillows on the chairs

and we cannot use our own blankets.

Airline blankets have been issued instead.

We do not mind being assessed on performance,

but being spied on like this leaves a nasty taste
."

One day, Nanny's own house might burn down...who will rush to rescue her then?

The Farting Chair

The Farting ChairI have to admit that I never thought that I would be writing about farting chairs, it seems more like something out of Benny Hill!

Have we descended to that level?

Anyhoo Sue Storer, deputy head of Bedminster Down Secondary school, is taking her ex employers to an employment tribunal.

She is claiming overwork, intimidation and stress.

Fair enough, perfectly reasonable grounds with which to make a claim.

However, it seems that the nub of her case (at least the way that the media report it) is the fact that she had a farting chair. Much like the chairs that CJ used in Reginald Perrin, her chair made farting noises whenever she sat or moved on it.

Mrs Storer told the tribunal that her two joint deputy heads, who were both men, were given new "executive" chairs without having to ask; whereas she continually had to apologise to pupils, parents and other teachers for the noises.

She ended up resigning from her job, and is now claiming more than £1 million, based on lost earnings and loss of pension, against Bristol City Council for constructive dismissal and sex discrimination.

In reference to the chair, she said:

"It was very embarrassing to sit on.

I asked for a chair that didn't give me a dead leg or make these very embarrassing farting sounds.

It was a regular joke that my chair would make these farting sounds and I regularly had to apologise that it wasn't me, it was my chair
."

Seemingly a consignment of new chairs arrived in May 2002, and she was not allocated one.

She even tried using health and safety to justify a new chair (quite why farting constitutes a health and safety issue I don't know).

Quote:

"I had specially requested a chair under health and safety regulations and I didn't get one."

When asked why she did not sort out the problem, she said:

"It's a health and safety issue for an employer to ensure you have a comfortable chair."

She said that she had raised the issue with the health and safety co-ordinator, Dick Hibdidge, a fellow deputy head.

Quote:

"After 12 months of not receiving a chair, I put in a memo and still didn't receive one."

Richard Bevan, the chairman of the school governors, said:

"I just can't understand why that issue wouldn't have been resolved. I would have thought that anybody in a senior position could have sorted out that problem."

The head teacher said that one delivery of chairs sat in reception for two weeks.

Quote:

"If it was an issue, I would have expected her to help herself."

Herein lies the problem with the Nanny state. We have all become so used to relying on, and hiding behind, rules and regulations, that we have forgotten to use our initiative and common sense.

Common sense would have dictated that both parties addressed this issue, and found a simple way of obtaining a new chair.

Common sense, it seems, was sadly lacking in this case.

How To Sit In a Reclining Chair

How To Sit In a Reclining Chair
Now I know that many of you happily live your lives, in a care free and relaxed manner, without ever giving a thought to the dangers that lurk in every corner of your existence.

However, don't panic, Nanny spends the most part of her life worrying about these dangers on our behalf.

Thank you Nanny!

Indeed she has recently identified another, previously considered "harmless", activity that urgently needs the "Nanny treatment".

Sitting in reclining chairs, it seems, is very dangerous.

Therefore Nanny's chums in the Greater Manchester Fire Service have drawn up a four-page safety manual to instruct crews on how to sit in a reclining chair.

Firemen, you might recall, are those brave ladies and gentlemen who risk life and limb on our behalf putting out fires and rescuing people from burning buildings.

You would have thought that they had a healthy appreciation of risk; Nanny thinks otherwise.

Those firemen from Manchester hoping for a rest between call-outs are banned from doing so, until they have been trained to use the fireservice's new £400 reclining chair.

This may take some time, however, since Greater Manchester Fire Service employs 2,200 personnel in 41 stations.

The instructions for sitting down are as follows:

Take out their "personal-issue head protector", and place it on the back of the chair.

Then, and only then, can they begin their descent, a process that must end with them sitting "fully back". Those that get this far can "get ready to recline".

The manual then advises:

"To release the mechanism (i.e. to start reclining), simply lift the lever under the right-hand arm of the chair (when seated).

This moves the chair into its semi-reclined position (i.e. feet up, head up)."

To recline the chair fully, they must hold on to the arm rests and push backwards.

To "upright" [sic] the chair, the occupant "should sit up slightly into the semi-reclined position, hold on to the armrest then press downwards with their heels until the action locks the chair flush".

Crews are warned that only "trained personnel" can carry out "lubrication of mechanisms", and that sleeping bags must not be used.

They are also given advice on how to deal with spillages - "tissue should firstly be placed on the stain to absorb excess liquid" - and warned that horseplay involving recliners is deemed a disciplinary offence.

The fire service has spent £130,000 on new Calcot recliners, which will be used as beds during night shifts.

A fire service spokesman said:

"Training will be given for health and safety reasons.

There are moving parts
."

I sit on a swivel chair when working, which I constructed myself; am I in danger?

Nanny Makes The Dons An Offer They Cannot Refuse

Nanny Makes The Dons An Offer They Cannot RefuseThe A level results are upon us again, they descend upon us with the depressing inevitability of an unloved season.

This year's results are, from Nanny's limited perspective, the best; an overall pass rate of 110%.

Awesome!

Regrettably they are of course meaningless, as there are still only a limited number of high level jobs that people can in reality aspire to. As such, if the A level system won't stream them out, then other methods of streaming will be implemented.

Now Nanny knows this, she is, despite appearances to the contrary, not as stupid as we think.

One of her greatest fears is that her precious unemployment statistics will be negatively impacted by surge in unemployed "successful" A level students.

In order to avoid this embarrassment Nanny has, for some years now, been trying to massage the unemployment figures; by ensuring that absolutely every school leaver in the country is in some form of "university".

Unfortunately, for Nanny, some universities are not as easily fobbed off with Nanny's education system failures. Oxbridge has for many years operated its own entrance system, comprising exams and interviews. This helps them screen out the no hopers.

Nanny has now woken up to that, and has decided to tell them to stop being so mean to "her charges" from the state education system.

Nanny has issued Oxbridge with "advice" (ie she has instructed them), as to how they should treat her state school pupils. Oxbridge dons have been given new guidelines for interviews, that are designed to prevent the "intimidation" of state school pupils and increase their chances of winning a place at the university.

In other words, Nanny is trying to rig the system in her favour.

In these ludicrous guidelines, dons have been urged not to assume too much knowledge on the part of the candidate; well that's not going to be too difficult is it? Remember, there are schools in Nanny's system that are producing 9 year olds who can't read the word "cat".

The dons have also been told not to be "cold and detached" or, and this is my particular favourite, not to sit on chairs higher than those of interviewees; thus forcing them to peer upwards.

Now tell me this, how does "mollycoddling" these people help them in any way face the real world and real job interviews later in life?

Nanny holds the belief that her state school pupils are at a disadvantage in university interviews, because they are less likely to have been coached in answering questions and adopting a confident posture.

Erm, if that really is the case, doesn't that reflect badly on Nanny's education system?

Doesn't the cure then lie in the hands of Nanny, ie shouldn't she ensure that interview techniques and posture are taught in her schools?

Another of Nanny's concerns is that of giving religious offence to Muslims during these university interviews. Dons have been told to avoid shaking hands with Muslim girls, who have not offered their hands first.

I would have thought that Muslim girls, who live in the UK, would be highly offended not to be offered a handshake.

Dons have also been told not to throw candidates off balance by starting with a hard questions, such as "how are you?"; and to talk about subjects that the candidates were comfortable discussing.

Farking hell!

If only real life interviews were as easy as that!

Another fine example of Nanny wrecking young people's lives, by trying to hide life's hard realities from them.

The Danger of Flowers

The Danger of FlowersNanny’s jobsworth friends in Lincolnshire County Council seem to have a bit of a fixation about flowers.

They are labouring under the deranged impression that flowers are dangerous.

This strange belief has caused grief for two Spalding flower shop owners; Jane Fletcher, of Flowers 'N' Things, and Emma Peake of Daisies Floral Design.

They have received warning letters from the council, telling them to remove their floral displays from outside of their shops.

It seems that, in the eyes of the jobsworth council, these bright and colourful displays are a health and safety hazard for near sighted pedestrians.

In a fine example of British resistance to dictatorship, the ladies are refusing to remove their displays; arguing that they have been trading in this manner for years, without complaints from real people.

Paul Rusted, area highways manager for Boston and South Holland division, sent a letter threatening the ladies with the removal and destruction of their property if they do not comply.

The perversity, of this already ridiculous situation, is that Flowers ‘N’ Things has a licence for chairs and tables for its coffee shop. However, despite Mrs Fletcher offering to pay for another licence for flowers, the jobsworth council refuse to discuss the matter.

By the way the council’s policy of not allowing goods to be displayed on the pavement has, apparently, been in force since 1980.

Why then do they seek to enforce it now so aggressively, some 25 years after inception?

Maybe the new Freedom of Information Act could be used to extract an answer from them? Those wishing to ask the council about this daft decision can write to highways@lincolnshire.gov.uk

I am sure that they will be pleased to assist you!
