Nanny Bans Cards

Nanny Bans Cards
Those of you who enjoy a quiet game of cards with your friends may soon find Nanny breathing down your neck, in the same way as 14 pensioners who live in sheltered accommodation at Neville Court (Heacham, Norfolk).

It seems that Freebridge Community Housing, the housing association that runs Neville Court, have decreed that cards present a health and safety risk, and as such the game has been banned.

The housing association does not have £2M public liability insurance to cover players who were not residents.

Unless they were prepared to pay an annual premium of £250, on top of the £1.50 they each pay for room hire every week, they were told they would have to stop.

The players used five tables in a small corner of the communal room at a housing scheme of 20 flats at Neville Court, in the village of Heacham, Norfolk. There has not been an accident since the residents and their guests started their game.

However, the group was sent a letter by the housing association saying that the insurance was necessary.

Our old friends in the insurance world trying it on, without anyone ever standing up to them and making them justify their charges.

Erm, am I missing somehing here? Just what kind of an injury are you likely to suffer as a result of playing cards? Could this be another scam by Nanny to relieve people of their money?

When will commonsense become common again?

Freebridge? Very expensive bridge (or whist), more like.

I don't know why I read your blog, it's depressing. How about some stories about "Health and Safety" folk falling down lift shafts for a nice change?

As you've said a million times, Ken, Nanny is hell-bent on robbing the joy, and well as the pockets of her citizens. Why do bureoucrats even know about this card game anyway? do they have nothing better to do? Makes me sad for the persioners, just trying to keep some company in their waning years.

I suppose it's too much to hope that they extend the concept of public liability insurance to those who are likely to become serial single parent breeders is it?

I mean if we are going to have some sort of dodgy insurance concept blown into a full scale scam we may as well see some benefit from it. One could consider compulsory sterilisation unless the individual carries insurance. Couldn't one?

Of course this would massively negatively effect all of us should there be a lot of claims from the insured but it might be a cost worth bearing.

It seems to me to be at least a possible outcome of the way the insurance concept is being developed by the law makers.

    Just a thought.....
Nanny's staff enjoy, in general terms, excellent pension schemes. These schemes are usually set up with private insurance companies and of course, the final pension payout relies on the profitability of those insurance companies......Now I wonder...No, Nanny wouldn't be so dishonest and sneaky to require compulsory insurance be taken out just to boost her staff pension funds would she?

    Lord of Atlantis,

Last time I checked my MUSH (Made-Up Statistics - Health) database, paper cuts were the largest source of preventable deaths among pensioners, followed closely by stabbings with sharpened, itty-bitty scoring pencils.

If we treated pensioners as grown-ups able to take responsibility for their own actions and capable of making their own choices, a whole sector of really, really useful people would find themselves out of work.

Tonk, "When will commonsense become common again?"

When it stops being Common Purpose. Our country has been taken over by dreamy-eyed soviet wannabes, a socialist clique (and a minority) who want to control every thought, word and deed to engineer a soviet socialist paradise.

Insurance companies love regulators. Compulsory insurance is a dream ticket for their greed.

    Surely they just ignored it?

Who would abide by such drivel?

If I were in that position I would take up the insurance with glee and immediately have an "accident" and put in a monster claim for a quarter of a million. That might make the bastas think twice.
