Nanny Bans Herge

I see that one of Herge's Tintin books has fallen foul of the pc brigade.

Apparently publishers of "Tintin in the Congo", Egmont UK, want to shrink wrap the book and attach a warning to perspective purchasers about its content.

For why?

In the view of the publishers there are certain scenes within the book (reworked in 1946) that are racist, and they feel that some readers may be offended.

The warning reads:

"In his portrayal of the Belgian Congo, the young Hergé reflects the colonial attitudes of the time.

He depicted the African people according to the bourgeois, paternalistic stereotypes of the period – an interpretation that some of today’s readers may find offensive."

It seems to me that so long as it is clear that the book was written at a time when attitudes where very different, then instead of "placing it off limits" in this way it would actually serve as an excellent educational tool for demonstrating how society has progressed.

Additionally, by making it "top shelf" material it will make it highly attractive to certain people for all the wrong reasons.

  1. More PC crap.

I agree, if you want to make something even more attractive, get it banned.

I pewrsonally feel offended everytime Nanny and her chums suggest by such action as this, that I am neither mature enough nor sophisticated enough to make my own mind up nor am I thick skinned enough not to be offended by written or spoken words. I grew up with the phrase in my head that, sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.......It must be so difficult and sad to be a modern person that is so sensitive that they're so easily hurt....BoooHoooHoooo.

I think it is an excellent idea that should be extended to porn.

I am often horrified to watch 70’s and 80’s fuck flicks where the guys have huge moustaches and sideburns and the women have enormous hairy growlers.

A warning would be most welcome.

This isn’t news - it’s been like this ever since it came out in English, and that’s years ago!.
You yourself say “As long as people know…” - well, what do you think the band does? It’s only part of the packaging, and can be thrown away when opened. Your wish appears to be their command!
You also fall into “Daily Mail” style levels of indignation without seeming to have gone and had a look: it isn’t banned, it isn’t top shelf - it’s in the rack with the rest of the kid’s books in my local Waterstones…
By all means decry the nanny state, but at least don’t just rabble rouse - make genuine issues a target, and leave the making things up to the press…

The political correctness gestapo have a lot to answer for! They, and the elf'n'safety brigade (both unelected) have brought this country to it's knees, by imposing their views upon the people, and not a whisper of protestation from the 'leaders' of this country!

  5. Have you been to the Congo recently? I've been to the DRC and Congo B in the past few years, and nothing could be more offensive than the places themselves!
