Bin Brother - Nanny's Bin Tax
Nanny's chums in local councils are forever bleating that they are running out of money. However, instead of cutting back on waste and unnecessary expenditure, they opt for the easy route and bleed the local taxpayers dry usually via increasing council taxes.
These days though, as a result of pressure from central Nanny and from more vocal local residents councils are finding that it is not so easy to raise council taxes.
The solution?
Simples, create another charge for a service that is already covered by council tax.
Step forward Nanny's greedy chums from South Gloucestershire council who want to introduce a £36 per annum charge, which in theory is meant to cover the cost of collecting local residents' green bins.
Call me old fashioned, but this just sounds like a complete rip off. In the event the green bins are so expensive to collect, why not simply abandon them and return to the good old days of putting all your waste in the same bin?
Let's face it, all the waste (green or otherwise) simply ends up in landfills in India anyway.
Anyhoo, Chris Skidmore MP for Kingswood, has launched a petition calling on South Gloucestershire Council to stop this rip off.
Those of you who wish to sign it, and live in the area, can do so via this link Say No To Labour’s Bin Tax.

Bin Brother - Double Taxation
Now call me an old fashioned and naive bod, but I thought that part of our council tax was meant to go towards refuse collection?
Not so according to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC).
In their view, despite the fact that their hapless residents already pay council tax the council want taxpayers to recycle garden waste but will charge them £56 per annum for picking it up (bringing in a tidy £1.2M per annum).
Local residents will be charged £36 to pick up their green bins, and a further £20 for a bundle of ten recycling sacks.
SGC is quoted by the Taxpayers's Alliance:

"If the council ultimately chose not to charge for the green bin service, then we’d have to implement cuts that could affect valued services such as libraries."In other words the council will not cut the costs of its own bureaucracy, but are happy to threaten the services that taxpayers pay for!

Prats of The Week - South Gloucestershire Council
Ooh err missus, this is clearly the week for prattery. Much like buses, having awarded one "Prats of The Week" Award this week, another one pops up eager to be awarded.
Therefore, without further ado, I am pleased to be able to award this week's second "Prats of The Week" Award to South Gloucestershire Council.
For why?
For their super duper wizard idea to open a 200 space car park (costing £1.3M) in June 2011, for a park and ride scheme in Stoke Gifford near Bristol.
What's wrong with that?
Nothing, under normal circumstances. However, there are two wee problems with the scheme:
1 An average of just 10 motorists a day are using the car park, and
2 The bus service for the park and ride scheme will not be in operation until 2015.
Brilliant!

Prats Of The Week - South Gloucestershire Council
Therefore what better occasion for me to award another of my prestigious, and internationally renowned, "Prats of The Week" Awards.
This week it goes to South Gloucestershire Council.
For why?
Just ask Christine Hudson, who recently erected (may I say "erected"?) a 12" wooden panel/fence for her fuchsias.
Can you guess what happened next children?
Yes, that's right, she received a visit from a council planning inspector.
For why?
The 12" erection was deemed to be an 'unauthorised development'.
At this point one would ask what sad bastard, who clearly needs a life, reported her to the council in the first place?
Anyhoo, aside from sad bastard (seemingly a neighbour who didn't like it), South Gloucestershire Council informed Mrs Hudson by letter that she needed planning permission for the erection. In the event that Mrs Hudson did not apply for retrospective permission, she would be forced to de-erect the fence.
Mrs Hudson, quite rightly, refused and tore the letter up.
Unsurprisingly, now that the media have kicked up a fuss, South Gloucestershire Council has now retracted its request for retrospective planning permission.
Councils are the enemy of the people!
South Gloucestershire Council, well deserving Prats of The Week.

Off The Buses
When I first heard about this particular Nanny daftness I assumed that I was in fact in some form of parallel universe, or altered state of consciousness.Yes, maybe I have been watching too much Dr Who!
Anyhoo, I soon realised that I was still on planet earth and in Croydon.
Nanny's chums in the Gloucestershire police take the health and safety of their officers very seriously, quite rightly so.
However, I would suggest that they may be taking their concerns over health and safety a little too far in the case of one of their community support officers Ian Yeomans.
Mr Yeomans was supposed to cover the Gloucestershire village of South Cerney from a police station three miles away, but the job did not come with a car.
The parish council quite reasonably suggested that Mr Yeomans could use the hourly bus services.
Fair enough?
Not in Nanny's world!
Gloucestershire police said he would not be allowed to use the buses, until the health and safety implications had been examined!
Er what precisely do they think will happen to him on a bus, that doesn't happen to the rest of us that use them?
Maybe they had read of the dangers of cans of paint brought on by pensioners?
Inspector Steve Williams said a health and safety check was needed for "all police activity".
Cretins!
Mike Stuart, council chairman, said:
"This over-cautious attitude has really gone beyond the realms of reality."
Have no fear, Nanny has found a solution that will cost her nothing (but will of course cost the taxpayer more money), Gloucestershire police will pay for Mr Yeomans to have access to a car.
