Climate Change Spawned ISIS

Oh dear, whoever is advising HRH Price Charles on what he should/shouldn't say to reporters has clearly fallen asleep at the wheel.

Climate change, whatever royal Nanny says, has not spawned terrorists such as ISIS!

The Dangers of Solar Panels

On 20th April a large fire at Hove Town Hall erupted, apparently caused by an electrical fault in solar panels on the roof.

The blaze produced a large column of black smoke that rose over Brighton and Hove.

Ironically, despite the fact that all things green are deemed to be safe, there is an additional risk wrt solar panels. As per Solar Power Portal:
"Research commissioned by the DCLG and carried out by BRE on fire safety and solar electric/photovoltaic systems, identifies the major obstacle facing firefighters: “In contrast to the power used by conventional mains electrical equipment, the power that PV systems generate is DC (direct current) and parts of the system cannot be switched off. DC installations have a continuous current, making them more hazardous (volt for volt) than normal AC (alternating current) electrical installations.”

The issue is that a household’s AC supply can easily be shut off by firefighters, however, the DC current supplied by the solar panels will also be generating as long as the sun is out.

How a firefighter approaches a house fire in a property with solar installed
According to Kent Fire and Rescue Services
  • Conduct a risk assessment to identify if any solar thermal (ST) of photovoltaic panels (PV) were or likely to be affected by fire
  • Identify the system fitted (we would treat as PV if not clear)
  • Isolate the main consumer unit
  • Identify the location of inverter and isolation switches and isolate
  • Inform personnel about the existence of the system in place and highlight the hazards present (electrical and risk of collapse)
  • Any fires within the inverters would be extinguished with a dry powder extinguishing agent
Additional control measures would be applied when appropriate:
  • Ladder contact with PV systems would be avoided
  • A safety officer would monitor for signs of collapse
  • A cordon would be established below panel arrays
  • Avoid application of firefighting water directly on to the PV array
  • Electrical rated gloves would be used for any contact with components of PV arrays and wiring
  • Consider covering the PV panels to reduce the generation of DC power
  • Seek specialist advice where necessary"

Nanny Bans Vacuums and Other Devices

Euro Nanny is on the warpath again, this time she has fixed her gimlet eye upon the humble vacuum cleaner; and has decreed that as from 1 September vacuums with motors in excess of 1,600 watts will be banned.

For why?

Apparently, if you believe Nanny's dodgy science, these products contribute to climate change.

Euro Nanny will require vacuum cleaners to be sold with a new system of labels, which will show their cleaning performance and requires a minimum level of performance.

However, these labels will be bollocks; because they are self regulating (ie the manufacturers create them and test them etc).

Once she has banned powerful suckers, Euro Nanny will also be banning high wattage hair driers and kettles.

Why not just go the whole hog, and initiate mandatory power cuts everyday?

Let's face it Euro Nanny would really love to do that, given her dictatorial ambitions!

Skidrow On Sea

The Mail had a gemusing article about Brighton (Skidrow on Sea) yesterday, highlighting the demise of the city under the "stewardship" of the Greens.

All very true.

However, it neglected to mention the large hole that has appeared in the main road running along the seafront (that will cause traffic chaos for weeks) and the fact that police forces from around the country had to come to Brighton yesterday to keep the extreme left and right apart lest they have a punch up.

Why the council allowed the march to take place on the seafront, instead of in the middle of nowhere, thus destroying the day's takings for all the business located there is a mystery.

Councils are the enemies of the people!

Brighton Council Wasting Taxpayers' Money

Congratulations to the minority Green controlled council of Brighton and Hove for finding new ways of wasting council taxpayers' hard earned money.

This time the Greens have decided to spend £230K on a referendum as to whether local taxpayers want their council tax increased by a gut busting 4.75%.

At this stage the actual referendum may well be simply pie in the sky, as it needs to be voted on first by the council in February; given that the Greens are a minority administration, the plan can be scuppered by the opposition parties.

However, in the event that the referendum is held, it will be akin to asking turkeys to vote for Christmas!

I predict a resounding no vote if placed before the voters.

Electric Blankets for All

I see that Nanny has suggested that we should use electric blankets in order to reduce our heating bills, and lessen the chances of the elderly freezing to death during the winter.

May I suggest a more energy efficient alternative?

Good old fashioned bed warmers (heated by hot coals)!

Failing that, how about removing the green tax levy on energy bills; thus reducing people's heating bills at the stroke of Nanny's pen?

Bin Brother - Bin Blight

Oh dear another directive from our EU overlords that I fear will not go down too well in this country.

Lord de Mauley, a minister in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recently told local authorities that they would be required to follow new EU guidance which requires homes to separate waste more efficiently.

Currently councils allow (as per Lord de Mauley quoted in the Telegraph) "co-mingled collections of recyclates". However, the revised Waste Framework Directive, that comes into force on January 1 2015, will cause an increase in "bin blight"; as people will be forced to separate their waste even more "precisely" than they do now.
“Where waste paper, metal, plastic or glass has been collected separately all reasonable steps must be taken to keep that stream separate from other waste streams wherever this is necessary to provide high quality recyclates.

I look to local authorities actively to address these problems, by the effective implementation of the new regulations and by tackling problems with operating practices.”
How many more bins are we going to need?

Global Warming Killed The Mammoth

I am gemused to see that according to scientific research two periods of global warming, one being 120,000 years ago and the other 30,000 years ago, caused the extinction of the woolly mammoth.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but human beings were not driving cars or emitting greenhouse gasses (to any great extent) at those times.

Conclusion?

Humans do not cause periods of global warming, the planet does it all by itself with a little help from the sun and other non human factors.

As a species we need to remember that we are not the centre of the universe, and not the be all and end all of natural events!

Bin Brother - Green Brighton's Bin Strike

What is the one service that councils are responsible for, that we all use or interact with (whether we are residents or visitors)?

Refuse collection and street cleaning!

This is the one service, above all others, that councils cannot afford to screw up if they don't want to appear to be incompetent cretins.

Step forward Brighton's Green council (a copy of the Green manifesto promise from 2011 is proudly displayed above - observe the word "cleaner"), which has through incredible mismanagement and incompetence engulfed Brighton in yet another bin strike; this one has been going on for a week, and threatens to continue into next week.

The earlier bin strike took place in May, here is what I said about it then:
"Here in the Green "paradise" of Brightonia the binmen have gone on strike.

Call me old fashioned, but the one service that councils provide that absolutely everyone (resident and visitor) sees the results of, or comes into contact with, is that of refuse collection and street cleaning; ie it is the one service that the council really ought not to fark up!

Ironically councils throughout the land manage to fark it up on a regular basis!
"
Welcome to Brighton!

As noted before many times on this site, councils are the enemies of the people!

Green Brighton council is particularly adept at proving that point.

Brighton Parking Charges - Nanny Talks Bollocks

As loyal readers know, Brighton council have caused a wee bit of a furore over their £20 per day car parking charges along Madeira Drive at the seafront.

My thanks to my chum and loyal reader MediaFox who alerted me to this wee piece of nonsense from Brighton Nanny, regarding charging for parking bays.

Seemingly:
"parking schemes aren't introduced to make money.."

ROFLOL!

Methinks Nanny talks bollocks!

Brighton Council Performs Half A U-turn

Loyal readers will recall that I recently wrote about Brighton council's daft and greedy idea to charge £20 per day for people parking along Madeira Drive on the seafront here:
"The council as from 1 April are now charging £20 per day (an increase of £16 from the current winter rate of £4 per day) for the privilege of parking in car parking spaces along Madeira Drive.

Brilliant!

That makes Brighton the most expensive place in the UK in which to park!

Ker Farking Ching!

Not only that, but the meters only accept £1 coins (they do not take notes or cards).

In one fell swoop the council have made Brighton seafront the least attractive place in the country to park.
"
Following a public drubbing, the council have performed a U-turn, or rather half a U-turn on parking charges.

The council now plan to introduce a new eight-hour tariff costing £15 in the seafront high zone, which includes Madeira Drive.

The £20 all-day charge is still in place.

A new medium tariff zone on Hove seafront from the Peace Statue to east of Fourth Avenue will cost a maximum of £10.

It is clearly a step in the right direction, but not enough. It is clear that public pressure, as with so many of Nanny's other daft ideas, has forced a change of heart and that the Green’s plans are unravelling.

Therefore further pressure should ensure that the council reduce the charges even more.

Ker Farking Ching - Brighton Council's Fuckwittery

Here in sunny Brighton we used to welcome day trippers and tourists.

For why?

Well, Brighton is a seaside resort that arose from the hedonistic "larks" of a rather portly Prince Regent. The financial infrastructure of the seafront is based on encouraging tourists to part with their cash, in exchange for fish &chips, sticks of rock, deckchairs and other such stuff.

That at least was the set up in the past.

Unfortunately our Green Party overlords have other ideas and other agendas. The Greens do not like cars, and have come up with a "terrific" wheeze that raises money for their moribund accounts and discourages people from parking their cars along the seafront.

Can you guess what that is children?

Yes, that's right, the council as from 1 April are now charging £20 per day (an increase of £16 from the current winter rate of £4 per day) for the privilege of parking in car parking spaces along Madeira Drive.

Brilliant!

That makes Brighton the most expensive place in the UK in which to park!

Ker Farking Ching!

Not only that, but the meters only accept £1 coins (they do not take notes or cards).

In one fell swoop the council have made Brighton seafront the least attractive place in the country to park.

Well done lads!

Surely though, the council have an effective "park and ride" scheme?

Errmm..not that I am aware of!

Alternative transport options are great in the Green world (the Greens actually claim that people can bicycle here, yes if they are local but not if they are coming en mass from eg Croydon!), if there are decent alternatives. However, who wants to pay for four or more to take a lousy train service to Brighton when the easiest option ought to be to drive to the seafront?

Given that no one in their right mid will pay £20, and given that taking the train only works if you are on the main London to Brighton line and don't mind paying £25 per head or more, the council have effectively cut the financial lifeblood of the sea front.

Well done lads!

Greedy, naive fuckwits!
