Nanny's Drought Warnings

Pissing Down
Er how is it that Nanny and the water companies have been bombarding us, who live in the South East, with dire warnings about drought and stand pipes; yet, as I write this, it is pissing down outside my window?

Maybe if Nanny and the water companies stopped wasting time and money on drought warnings, and deluded plans to tow icebergs up the Thames, and instead concentrated their efforts on fixing the appalling number of leaks in the water distribution system; that would go some way to solving the problem.

Oh, I forgot, Nanny and the water companies are incompetent and useless!

As, indeed, is OFWAT, a huge waste of money for a huge 'tiger without teeth'!!!!

They said we'd have a drought unless four inches of rain fell in the next couple of months...well, considering the amount of times this week I went out into the sun in a t-shirt, only to return amidst running rivers down bloody hilly Winchester's pavements...methinks that four inches is easily obtainable!!

Some mistake, surely, spiv? I thought the name was OFTWAT.

Well, dry spells a happen regularly so nothing unusual about this.

And everytime they happen people at water companies use them as an excuse to suggest that the only solution is higher charges for water. So that they can 'invest' in replacing the old pipes.

Now, the thing is I thought that was what they had all the dosh for about 10 or 11 years ago when the Victorians (or was it the Romans?) were roundly criticised for using materials that only lasted about a hundred years or so and possibly poisoned the population.

So presumably these new leaks that they are keeping quiet about are coming from the long life plastic they planted at the time.

I wonder what happensed to the rest of the cash they have been sequestering for the last 10 years?

And can you imagine the conversations at the south eastern water companies board meetings.

Do they see the Prescott Plan for millions of new homes in a drought prone area as a problem of supply or a wonderful opportunity to further bolster the pension funds of the off shore owners and lay the blame at the door of climate change?

Of course, if the latter AND they actually believe that, then we certainly have to hope that global cooling never comes around since cooler periods are usually drier periods.

So, one and all, it is our duty to rely on the science of climate change as currently theorised and liberate as much CO2 as possible in the hope that it will maintain or enhance any current trend to warmth and thus provide some hope that a deep and long term drought can be avoided.

spiv - I feel sure that OFWAT should be an anagram of something but can't quite place it. Seems to have little other purpose.

Ah, whilst the system of posting failed me it seems that bagpuss has been thinking along similar lines ....

The weather forecast on Friday night said today (Saturday) would have some sunny periods but tomorrow would be bad news.

    Hmm.

A couple of minutes of sun but otherwise dull, wet and windy mostly. I this was the south east I would expect the instant lifting of water restirctions and dire flood warnings to be the order of the day.

So I abandoned my plan for the day and thought to carry it over to tomorrow.

But no, tomorrow is predicted to be even worse. So I loooked at the 10 day prediction. Rain. 10 days of constant rain.

    Water shortage. Pah!

Water STORAGE shortage through mismanagement, perhaps, but there really should not be any question of water shortage.

I did might best but hyper-ventilated and fell over, I tried methane emissions, apparently a more potent greenhouse gas, certainly the wife seems to think so as she kicked me out of the bedroom. Maybe I'll stick to leaving the VCR on standby.

I came across this quote attached to a posting elsewhere as someones signature entry.

Thought I would share it with you. This thread seems as suitable as anywhere and in context.

"We allow the most atrocious lies uttered by political and moral
prostitutes to go unchallenged. These lies are endlessly recycled in the commercial media until they become ingrained in the public conscience as truth. Worse than burying our heads in the sand, we bury them up our collective ass. How do you like the view?:

    Doc Bud,

I hate to say this but in my New World Order I would have to classify you wife as a retrogressive and therefore a target for 'treatment'.

I suggest you point this out to her and persuade her to amend her way rather quickly ...

Er, oh. That sounds rather like the attiutude of the current regimes doesn't it?

Hmm. Tricky this task of defining how the world should be run.
