Nanny Unbans Brian

Nanny Unbans Brian
Congratulations to Nanny's chums on Torbay Council who have just entered the modern world. Thirty years ago they banned "The Life of Brain" from being shown in local cinemas.

The fact that people could simply travel to a nearby town to see it, at the time, didn't make the councillors think that they or their ban looked ridiculous (councillors are so thick skinned aren't they?). However, 30 years on, they have finally lifted the ban.

May I take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome from the 21st century to the councillors of Torbay!

The banning of something inevitably gives it a huge amount of publicity, and creates an increase in demand for the product or event.

It was banned in my home town of Glasgow, too. No doubt if someone today produced the film, 'Life of Ajay' it would be banned and a fatwah issued on the life of the makers.

When 'Life of Brian' was banned it seemed to be a more puritanical age with illegitimacy and homosexuality still frowned upon. In today's more enlightened times 'right on' public servants prefer the term 'partner' to 'wife' or 'husband', people don't recognise illegitimacy as a concept and homosexuality is open but you can be prosecuted for smoking a fag in a pub and have your children taken into care because they're obese.

Society's values blow with the wind which to me suggests a very good case for accepting them only after considerable thought (or are we not allowed to do that any more?).

PS Actually we're not - eg prosecution of hotel owners who object to gay couples practising homosexuality under their roof.

Nah, I've been to Torbay. They might have just made it to the 20th century - definitely not the 21st!

Oh er, practicing homosexuality I have been at it for ages and still can't get it right.

Shut that door, there's a terrible draft in this hotel dear.

Aberystwyth unbanned Life of Brian when the woman who played 'Judith Iscariot' in the film became mayor last year!
