Prats of The Week - Brighton Council

Oooh err missus, 'tis a Monday morning and time to award one of my prestigious and internationally renowned "Prats of The Week" Awards.

This week it goes to Brighton council.

For why?

A few days ago the council turned Windmill Street into a one way street with a cycle lane, and erected (can I say "erected" before the 9PM watershed?) two "no entry" signs at one end of the road.

Nothing wrong with that, or was there?

Take a wee look at the above photo, can you tell me what the problem is children?

Yes, that's right, the newly painted cycle lane on the left hand side of the street has a nice big arrow pointing in the opposite direction to the one way traffic flow!

Thus, were cyclists to ignore the no entry signs, cyclists would find themselves cycling in the wrong direction down a one way street into oncoming traffic!

Whatever happened to Nanny's obsession with health and safety?

Brighton council, well deserving Prats of The Week!

  1. It's not that unusual - we've got one like it! Note the small island to give an initial false sense of security before you get to where the road narrows over the bridge, which combined with the slight left bend and high brick work results in no visibility of oncoming traffic. Normally you also get cars parked in the cycle lane to force you head-on with the traffic going the "right" way.

Despite that, I've never heard of an accident since they made that road one-way. Seems that most people can avoid killing or injuring themselves without council interference.

  2. Forgot to include this...

If you want cycle lanes opposing one-way traffic, this deserves an honourable mention!

Oh come on Ken: you must know that the rules of the road don't apply to lycra clad cyclists:-)) Well, in their minds anyway.....Could it be possible that their brains have been mashed by the radio active fruit bowls they wear on their heads?

Just as those same rules of the road forbid parking of cars on the pavements and cycle lanes, but of course motorists have always considered themselves to be above the law.

By the way, I don't wear lycra. So presumably I can stereotype motorists as homicidal maniacs driving illegally modified "boom cars", using the public highway as a race track, aping their hero that loud-mouthed twat Clarkson?

See Tonk - it works both ways.

Speaking on behalf of all Local Authority Planning Departments I do not see what your problem is here, Sir!!
All we have to do is demolish all the housing on the other side of the road; remove all road furniture and signing; rebuild the said houses facing in the opposite direction thereby preventing us the requirement to re-site and re-mark the cycle lane. All work carried out will be done with the uttmost care to the envirnment using only recyclable products in line with our Local Council Green Code Mandate for the Future of the Planet including Brighton Memorandum Article 73(b) whch states .... agh Fuck......
