Nanny's Orwellian Crackdown: Turning Pubs into Free Speech Gulags

In what can only be described as a descent into a modern-day Orwellian nightmare, Labour's recent employment reforms have taken aim at one of the last bastions of unfiltered British culture: the pub. The Labour government, with its newfound zeal for micromanaging the minutiae of everyday life, has introduced policies that effectively transform local watering holes into no-go zones for free speech. Here's why this should alarm every Brit who cherishes the right to a good, old-fashioned debate over a pint.

From Cheers to Censorship

The heart of the issue lies in Labour's reinterpretation of harassment laws within the confines of pubs. Under the guise of protecting workers, the new employment rights bill mandates that landlords play the role of "banter police," surveilling conversations to prevent any potentially offensive remarks. This means that discussions on topics like politics, religion, or even football could be curtailed if someone finds them "harassing." Imagine the scene: two blokes at the bar, one a staunch supporter of Brexit, the other a remainer, both now needing to whisper their opinions lest they offend someone or, worse, the pub staff.

EHRC's Alarm

Even the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), not typically known for its libertarian stance, has raised red flags over these measures. The EHRC warns that Labour's approach risks severely curtailing freedom of expression, which is supposedly a fundamental right in this country. This is not about protecting the vulnerable from real harassment but about pre-emptively silencing any conversation that might stir controversy, thereby stripping pubs of their role as communal discussion forums.

A Culture of Fear

The implications are vast and deeply troubling. Pub landlords, already grappling with the economic fallout from various policies, now face the additional burden of policing speech. This doesn't just infringe on the rights of the patrons; it places an unfair onus on landlords, potentially leading to fewer people daring to voice their opinions for fear of repercussions. The chilling effect this has on free speech cannot be overstated. Pubs, which have historically been places where ideas are exchanged freely, now risk becoming sterile environments where only safe, government-approved topics are discussed.

The Irony of Labour's Legacy

It's a cruel irony that Labour, a party with roots in workers' rights and free speech, now champions policies that could very well be Orwell's "1984" in action. By attempting to regulate speech in such an intimate setting as the pub, Labour reveals its true colours: not as a guardian of liberty but as an architect of control. This move isn't just about protecting workers; it's about controlling the narrative, about ensuring that only the "right" kind of speech is heard, thereby eroding the very essence of British pub culture.

A Call to Arms

The British public must see this for what it is: an assault on the freedoms they hold dear. The government's role should not be to dictate what can be said over a pint but to protect the right to say it. The Labour Party needs to be reminded that freedom of speech is not a luxury but a necessity, especially in the informal settings where ideas are freely exchanged. If we allow this precedent to stand, we're not just losing our pubs; we're losing our voice.

In conclusion, Labour's employment reforms are a stark reminder that when government oversteps to regulate personal interactions, the cost is often our most cherished liberties. The time to speak out is now, before the only conversation left in pubs is the silent nod of agreement with the status quo. Let's not allow our local to become a place where freedom once rang but now lies silenced under the heavy hand of state control.

Humza's Hated Hate Crime Law

Without any sense of irony whatsoever, Humza's vile and despised hate crime law came into force yesterday (Aprils Fools' Day).

Suffice to say people took full advantage of being able to report anyone and anything, and duly reported en masse Humza Yousaf and Anas Sarwar for racism relating to anti white speeches they have made.

Credit where credit is due, the Indian Council of Scotland reported Police Scotland for their anti white racism, and got a positive result.

Meanwhile JK Rowling is daring the police to arrest her for  her views on biological sex.

It is clear that this law is utter bollocks, and is extremely dangerous as it potentially criminalises people for expressing opinions in the privacy of their own homes. Therefore the best way to destroy it is to overload the system with complaints about Humza.

It is remarkably easy, using the online form anyone, anywhere in the world can report Humza anonymously multiple times!

Here is a link to the online form.

All The World's a Stage - Unless You Are Lawrence Fox #StunningandBrave

Lawrence Fox has fallen foul of the luvvie darlings in Equity, by daring to express an opinion that did not chime with the group think of Equity.

As such Equity branded him a "disgrace" on Twitter, and called upon fellow luvvies to denounce him (shades of McCarthyism there!).

Equity has now backtracked and has deleted the tweet, claiming it was posted by some rogue members!

However, the Mail claims that the original tweet has been approved by Equity's committee.

This farce will run and run!

Big Brother Is Watching You Smoke

BirminghamLive reports that new "yellow vulture" speed cameras are being rolled out in the UK.

They are thought to be more discreet than the speed-tracking technology currently used on our roads.

Motorists pictured eating or smoking behind the wheel, or using their mobile phone, will be slapped with a £200 fine and 6 penalty points.

All very well and intrusive maybe, except for one wee point..it's not illegal to smoke or eat when driving!

As per the RAC:

1. Is it illegal to eat and drive?

No. It’s not illegal to eat and drive at the same time. However, if you present a significant danger while snacking on the move, the police could prosecute you for careless driving if they consider you not in proper control of the vehicle.

2. Is it illegal to drink when driving?

Similar to eating, drinking at the wheel is not illegal, but it can carry the same careless driving penalty.

3. Is smoking while driving illegal?

Smoking at the wheel is not an offence in itself, but if it leads to careless driving it could land you in trouble with the law.

Put that in your pipe Nanny and smoke it!

ID Cards Back On The Table

In the irony of all ironies, despite being told we would be leaving the EU's bureaucracy post Brexit, Nanny now wants us to adopt ID cards (allegedly to avoid another Windrush-style scandal).

The proposal comes from the think tank Policy Exchange. It argues that Brexit marks a natural point at which to reform the UK’s immigration system.

Nanny knows full well the ID cards are not highly regarded by the Brits. Hence she has a "cunning" solution.

David Goodhart, Policy Exchange’s head of demography, immigration and integration, said he believed ID cards were necessary – but acknowledged that people would be wary and said ID cards should be phased in voluntarily.

That's how the state works, make something "voluntary" at first then make it a criminal offence when you don't volunteer!

Oh and here is a link to the list of 10 reasons why ID are bollocks (that I first published in 2004)

Big Brother's Vibrator

You have doubtless heard about the CIA tapping into Samsung TVs to spy on people, now it seems it is not just technically sophisticated gadgets such as TVs that are used to spy on you, but even the humble vibrator!

We-Vibe products (sex toys controlled via a smartphone app) have been spying on users, and sending data back to the product manufacturers.

The Telegraph reports that Canadian firm Standard Innovation, has agreed to pay C$4 million (£2.4 million) to members of the public who bought and used its We-Vibe products.

The firm, it was discovered, had been collecting data via the app, recording when customers had been using the sex toys, as well as information about the intensity of the vibration settings used. The data was collected without customers having been notified.

The court filing, made on behalf of two anonymous female We-Vibe users, said:
Unbeknownst to its customers … (Standard Innovation) designed We-Connect to collect and record highly intimate and sensitive data regarding consumers’ personal We-Vibe use, including the date and time of each use and the selected vibration settings, and transmit such usage data — along with the users’ personal email address — to its servers in Canada.
You have been warned!

Prats of The Week - Cardiff Metropolitan University

Kudos to Cardiff Metropolitan University for winning Prats of The Week for their Orwellian diktat banning phrases such as “right-hand man” and “gentleman’s agreement” in favour of more inclusive, gender neutral language.

Cardiff Metropolitan University’s revised code of practice states more appropriate terms should be used where possible, adding that students should not allow their “cultural background” to affect their choice of words on campus.

“Forefathers”, “mankind” and “sportsmanship” are also on the list of 34 words and phrases to be avoided as part of efforts to “embrace cultural diversity” by the university.

The Independent lists the banned phrases:

Cardiff Metropolitan University's Guide to Inclusive Language:

Nanny Bans Latin Abbreviations

Nanny's experts in wordspeak are concerned that some of her subjects are too thick to understand Latin abbreviations that have been used for centuries eg; ie, QED, eg,etc.

Therefore Nanny will ban all Latin abbreviations on all of her official websites ie (oops I can't say that anymore!) those hosted under GOV.UK.

Seemingly the phrases could confuse English speakers who were "under stress or in a hurry".

This of course is bollocks, because Latin is the root of many European languages (especially English) and forms a common bond between these languages.

Nanny would do better on focusing her gimlet eye on reducing the amount of guff she writes, and clarifying her bureaucratic wordspeak!

Nanny To Monitor Kids' Internet

As per Jen Persson on Schools Week:

"While the compulsory retention of every website visit for every person in the UK was recently debated and passed in the House of Commons in the Investigatory Powers Bill, the plans for statutory surveillance of every child’s Internet use, in schools and at home, has gone unnoticed.

Without Parliamentary or public discussion, children’s internet use will be monitored by third parties from September. This is despite widespread associated concerns – including choking off free speech, religious freedom, and staff feeling vulnerable – presented to the Joint Select Committee for Human Rights by experts in education and security legislation.

The brief paragraph 75 in The Department for Education (DfE) “New measures to keep children safe online at school and at home” statutory guidance Safeguarding in Schools, will impose a change from a duty ‘to consider’ web monitoring to one that ‘should ensure’ it for educational establishments, excluding 16-19 academies and free schools.

The supporting advice to which the Government response points, suggests actively monitoring all screen activity during a lesson from a central console using appropriate technology as a solution, even in circumstances that suggest low risk. And that logfile information should be able to identify an individual user, and be reviewed regularly. Pro-active monitoring is suggested where alerts are managed by a third-party provider.

The Department for Education’s summary response and advice however offers little practical support to school leaders how to concretely take these things into account, while still meeting human rights legislation.

Without explicit clarity on the practice of monitoring personal electronic devices not owned by the school, we risk a slippery descent into schools made complicit in a privacy invasion of family life."

Thus the stage is set for kids to become tools of the state, from childhood onwards until they die of old age.
"Give me a child for the first 5 years of his life and he will be mine forever."
— Vladimir Lenin

Facebook Is Listening To You

It appears that, only in the USA for the moment, Facebook could be listening in on people’s conversations all of the time.

Kelli Burns, mass communication professor at the University of South Florida, has warned that the Facebook app might be using people’s phones to gather data on what they are talking about.

Indeed Facebook has admitted that its USA app app does listen to what’s happening around it, but "only" as a way of seeing what people are listening to or watching and suggesting that they post about it.

Professor Burns has said that the tool appears to be using the audio it gathers not simply to help out users, but might be doing so to listen in to discussions and serve them with relevant advertising. She says that to test the feature, she discussed certain topics around the phone and then found that the site appeared to show relevant ads.

Mobile phones, TVs and other electronic gadgets (eg dolls) are being fitted with systems that monitor what people say. Are we really so naive to think that this is a harmless "gizmo" and that corporations (and others) won't misuse the data that they collect?
