Advice To @GOVUK - Think Before You Post!

Nanny's tweet didn't get the reaction she had hoped for (see the comments), as such she has now disabled the comments.

Maybe she should have thought before she posted?

All The World's a Stage - Unless You Are Lawrence Fox #StunningandBrave

Lawrence Fox has fallen foul of the luvvie darlings in Equity, by daring to express an opinion that did not chime with the group think of Equity.

As such Equity branded him a "disgrace" on Twitter, and called upon fellow luvvies to denounce him (shades of McCarthyism there!).

Equity has now backtracked and has deleted the tweet, claiming it was posted by some rogue members!

However, the Mail claims that the original tweet has been approved by Equity's committee.

This farce will run and run!

The CPS Is Coming For You!

Make the most of the internet folks, and all those humorous images you share, whilst you can.

As per the FT:
"Internet abusers who formulate derogatory hashtags or post doctored images of their victims online could face prosecution under new legal guidelines.

The rules, set out by the Crown Prosecution Service, aim to make online “trolls” more accountable for their actions while trying not to stifle freedom of speech. Those who breach the regulations by harassing others on social media would be liable for criminal charges."

Facebook Is Listening To You

It appears that, only in the USA for the moment, Facebook could be listening in on people’s conversations all of the time.

Kelli Burns, mass communication professor at the University of South Florida, has warned that the Facebook app might be using people’s phones to gather data on what they are talking about.

Indeed Facebook has admitted that its USA app app does listen to what’s happening around it, but "only" as a way of seeing what people are listening to or watching and suggesting that they post about it.

Professor Burns has said that the tool appears to be using the audio it gathers not simply to help out users, but might be doing so to listen in to discussions and serve them with relevant advertising. She says that to test the feature, she discussed certain topics around the phone and then found that the site appeared to show relevant ads.

Mobile phones, TVs and other electronic gadgets (eg dolls) are being fitted with systems that monitor what people say. Are we really so naive to think that this is a harmless "gizmo" and that corporations (and others) won't misuse the data that they collect?

Nanny Bans Ungoogleable

As loyal readers know, Nanny is fond of banning certain words and phrases lest they cause offence (eg because in her view they are non pc).

However, sometimes Nanny is not always looking at a word or phrase from the "pc" perspective, but sometimes Nanny looks at it from the "corporate perspective".

Step forward Google (the epitome of free speech) which had a bone to pick with the good people from the Language Council of Sweden

Every year the Language Council publishes its top 10 new words that have entered the Swedish language, with the objective of showing how language and culture develops and changes (the reverse of what the French language police do;)).

Anyhoo last December one of the words that appeared in the list was "ungoogleable" (ogooglebar in Swedish), defined by the Council as "something that cannot be found with any search engine".

Sadly for the Swedes Google was not best pleased, it raised an objection.

For why?

Trademark issues.

Google wanted the meaning to relate only to Google searches. It called for changes to the Language Council of Sweden's definition and asked for a 'disclaimer' stressing that Google is a trademark.

All very well, but the word is used by Swedes to mean something that cannot be found with ANY search engine; ie in order to comply with Google's diktat the Swedes would have had to alter the meaning (much like the language censors in Orwell's 1984 did).

Therefore, in order to avoid a lengthy legal battle and in order to maintain their integrity the Swedes removed it from the list, but did so publicly.

A statement on the Language Council of Sweden's website, as per the BBC:
"Who decides language? We do, language users. We decide together which words should be and how they are defined, used and spelled."
In response, a Google spokesperson told the BBC:
"While Google, like many businesses, takes routine steps to protect our trademark, we are pleased that users connect the Google name with great search results.
Wasn't it Google that also once said "don't be evil"?

Plus ca change!

Nanny Bans, Then Unbans Apostrophes

I am gemused to read about the recent antics of Nanny's chums from Mid-Devon District Council, who have been getting their collective knickers in a twist over the English language and "how she is spoke".

Seemingly the learned members of Mid-Devon District Council were of the view that apostrophes are just too confusing for the "intellect" of 21st Century minds, and as such banned them from street names.

Needless to say this dumbing down, and bastardisation of grammatical rules, attracted widespread criticism and derision.

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's (ooh, did you see how cunningly I inserted an apostrophe there?) right, Nanny unbanned the ban.

Apostrophes are now legal once more in Mid Devon.

Hoozah!

Nanny Bans Unkempt

My sympathies to Tim Loughton, Tory MP and ex-Children’s Minister, who found himself on the wrong end of the Nanny state last August when he had to endure a 90 minute interview under caution by detectives from Sussex police.

For why?

He used the word "unkempt" in an email sent to Kieran Francis rejecting his complaints about a local council.

For good measure the police also interviewed the MP’s staff and went through his correspondence, the Crown Prosecution Service finally decided last month that the case should be dropped without any charges being brought.

Mr Loughton is quite rightly less than gemused about all of this, and is quoted by the Telegraph:
I am very angry that time and money has been wasted in pursuing what was clearly a vexatious and malicious complaint that had no substance. It has been very worrying for me and my family.

This has knocked my confidence in the police and made me wonder whether there are certain elements for whom political correctness has become too much of a driving force.
Because of the merest hint of something to do with racism and the sensitivities about travellers, the police go into overdrive.”
Sussex Police said in a statement:
An allegation of malicious communication was reported to Sussex Police, and was fully investigated in the same way it would be for any member of the public.”
When MPs from the ruling party lose faith in the police that are meant to serve and protect the people, then you know we have got real problems!

Auntie Uses 1984 As A Blue Print

As loyal readers know, George Orwell wrote "1984" to warn about the rise of the totalitarian state and the use by that state of surveillance, censorship and history revisionism to control people's lives.

Well good old Auntie has not only read it, but has decided to use it as a blue print for how she handles repeats.

Thus it came to pass that Auntie exercised a wee bit of Orwellian word deletion and censored a recent repeat airing of Fawlty Towers. The Telegraph reports that the offending episode had a scene with the words “wogs” and “niggers” in it. The major, played by Ballard Berkeley, is explaining the difference between the two.

The BBC cut the line out.

Auntie was of the view that the words are offensive, yes they are. However, context is everything, had Auntie bothered to watch her own show she would have seen that the entire point of the scene was to mock the major for being a racist not to gratuitously insult people of other ethnic origins.

Aside from needing to learn the subtleties of humour, Auntie needs also to understand that airbrushing history is a futile exercise as it always comes back to bite you in the arse (can I use the word "arse" before the watershed?)!

Les Prats De La Semaine - The French

Ooh La La Missus, today I would like to make an international presentation of my prestigious "Prats of The Week" Award.

This week it goes to the French, or rather one of French Nanny's government departments the Commission Générale de Terminologie et de Néologie (tasked with keeping the French language "pure").

How does it do this?

Simple, it reinvents new French words to replace "evil" new foreign ones that have invaded the language; al la "1984".

Thus it has come to pass that the word "hashtags" has been banned by French Nanny from all legislation and official correspondence etc.

The new French word for hashtags is "mot-dièse" (sharp word).

All very "amusing", no doubt. However, the Commission Générale de Terminologie et de Néologie forgets that a language (if the culture that uses it is still vibrant and living) continues to grow, develop and evolve.

On the assumption that the French language is not yet dead, you can no more stop its evolution than you can disinvent the wheel.

The Commission Générale de Terminologie et de Néologie, well deserving Prats De La Semaine!

Nanny's Child Catchers From Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

On Monday I noted that Nanny had called for hundreds more vulnerable children a year to be taken into care.

Swift off the mark to heed Nanny's call and to show loyalty to the state was Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, which has decreed that the three foster children that a couple have been caring for since September (note the couple have been foster parents for over six years) must be removed from their care.

For why?

The couple belong to UKIP.

So?

Nanny received a tip off that the couple belong to UKIP; ie the council uses anonymous informers to spy on people!

Nanny sent her Gestapo around to the couple's house, the Gestapo informed that couple that UKIP was a racist party and that the three children (because they were non British) must be removed from their care.

Factoid: UKIP may well have views on immigration/multiculturalism. However, that does not necessarily make it a racist party.

Factoid: Given that the couple voluntarily fostered the three kids, knowing that they were non British, they can hardly be described as being racists can they?

All of this means nothing to Nanny.

Step forward Joyce Thacker, the council's Director of Children and Young People's Services, who is quoted in the Telegraph:
"We always try to place children in a sensible cultural placement. These children are not UK children and we were not aware of the foster parents having strong political views. There are some strong views in the Ukip party and we have to think of the future of the children.

Also the fact of the matter is I have to look at the children's cultural and ethnic needs. The children have been in care proceedings before and the judge had previously criticised us for not looking after the children's cultural and ethnic needs, and we have had to really take that into consideration with the placement that they were in.

We have to think about the clear statements on ending multi-culturalism for example.

These children are from EU migrant backgrounds and Ukip has very clear statements on ending multiculturalism, not having that going forward, and I have to think about how sensitive I am being to those children.
This is of course an abhorrent thing to do and the lesson is clear; if you belong to a party that the state disapproves of, the state will take your children away from you.

Councils are the enemies of the people.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's decision must be overturned, and its network of informers and spies dismantled, if the British people are to once again regain their freedom!

Prats of The Week - The BBC

Ooh, having shaken off the dregs of the Bank Holiday weekend and easing myself into the forthcoming week ahead, I feel it is time to award my prestigious and internationally renowned Prats of The Week Award.

This week it goes to Auntie (ie the BBC).

For why?

Just ask Baroness Bakewell, who is campaigning to have a statue of George Orwell erected (can I say "erected"?) in the piazza outside of the new Broadcasting House.

It is a good idea, Orwell warned of the dangers of communism and (via 1984 and Animal Farm) gave us a chilling vision of what the future might look like under a totalitarian regime where every communication was monitored and our daily lives subjected to state control and intrusion.

Orwell also worked as a BBC journalist, producing radio programmes at Broadcasting House during the Second World War before leaving to publish Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

So why have I nominated the BBC for my award?

Well it seems that the BBC don't want to have an erection in the piazza, even though the cost would be covered by donations.

Why?

Mark Thompson, the Corporation’s outgoing director general, said the statue could not be erected on BBC premises because Orwell was “too Left-wing”.

Eh?

Lady Bakewell is quoted in the Telegraph:
I met Mark Thompson at a BBC reception and mentioned the project. He said, 'Oh no, Joan, we can’t possibly. It’s far too Left-wing an idea’.”
Could it be that the BBC is still smarting from the fact that Orwell based Room 101 on a conference room at Broadcasting House, where he attended staff meetings?

HMRC's Spy School

Be warned, HMRC are now training schoolchildren to report to the state people whom the children suspect of not paying their "fair share" of tax.

How can a child or adult know what someone else's "fair share" of tax is meant to be?

This will have terrible consequences for democracy and the structure of sociaety, if it is not stopped now.

Nanny Bans Hobbit

As loyal readers know, Nanny tends to ban things that she doesn't understand or that threaten her authority over us. However, sometimes, the motivation for a ban or infringement of freedom is simply money.

Thus I am sorry to say that The Hobbit pub in Southampton (a pub that has been using that name for around 20 years) has found itself on the receiving end of the threat of litigation by US lawyers representing Nanny's chums from the Saul Zaentz Company (SZC) in California.

SZC owns the worldwide rights to several brands associated with author JRR Tolkien, including The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings.

Unfortunately, the pub features characters from Tolkien's stories on its signs, has "Frodo" and "Gandalf" cocktails on the menu, and the face of Lord of the Rings film star Elijah Wood on its loyalty card.

Needless to say this has not gone down well with SZC, and as such it has asked that the pub remove all references to the characters.

The Hobbit pub has set up a Facebook page to help save it. However, given that SZC has more money than those who run the pub it will be a battle that can only be won if SZC shows some humanity and charity, and finds a legally watertight way to allow this "infringement" to continue as a "one off" (so that others are not tempted to infringe its rights).

However, that "Damascus revelation" of charity may be unlikely, the Hobbit pub is not the only UK business to be served with a litigation notice from SZC.

The Hungry Hobbit cafe in Birmingham was also served with one in the latter end of 2011 (they too have a Facebook page). Their proposed solution to the threats from SZC will be to rename the cafe the "Hungry 'Obbit". However, it is not yet clear as to whether SZC will accept this.

Brand value and trademarks are very important in commerce. However, sometimes the damage to a company's brand value by appearing to some to be petty minded and greedy exceeds any alleged loss of revenue stream from minor infringements; ie a degree of commonsense and flexibility is required and will reap rewards.

Sadly, as loyal readers know, Nanny has long since banned commonsense and is remarkably inflexible.

Nanny Bans Fireman Sam

It seems that Nanny continues to crack down on freedom of speech and our freedom to ask questions.

David Jones, a retired fireman and the creator of Fireman Sam, discovered this to his cost the other day when he went through the security gates at Gatwick airport.

As we all know, Nanny has done her best to increase our paranoia and fear about terrorism and has increased the level of security checks over the years at UK airports (all rather pointless on some long haul flights, if the same level of checks are not carried out at other airports en route or for transit passengers).

Anyhoo, Mr Jones placed his belongings, including a scarf, into the tray that passes through the X ray (that can't of course pick up certain types of explosives). Whilst waiting in line he observed a Muslim lady in a hijab pass through the area without showing her face.

Mr Jones made a comment to one of Nanny's security officers thusly:

"If I was wearing this scarf over my face, I wonder what would happen.”

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's right, Mr Jones was detained by Nanny's security staff and accused of racism.

Factoid: for the benefit of Nanny and her lackeys, any person of any race or colour can be Muslim (it is a religion not a race!).

Mr Jones then was subjected to a one hour stand-off, as Nanny's lackeys tried to force him to apologise.

To whom should he have apologised may I ask, and for why?

1 He wasn't being racist.

2 The comment was not aimed at the lady, nor heard by her.

3 The lady had long since gone.

Mr Jones then claims that, in addition to security staff giving him a verbal going over, the BA duty manager (he was trying to fly BA) got involved and took their side too.

The security staff insisted that he apologise to a Muslim security guard who had "apparently", on being told of the comment (ie she was not initially involved), became offended.

Mr Jones requested that a police officer be sought, unfortunately the police officer also kowtowed to the concept of political correctness. Mr Jones was told that "some things are not to be said".

We have now entered the Orwellian world of thought and speech crimes!

Mr Jones eventually (as he really did want to catch a flight) came to an agreement whereby he consented that what he said "could" be considered offensive by a Muslim guard.

Needless to say, Nanny insisted on making him go through the security check and full search again.

How petty and pathetic!

Gatwick airport are now looking into the matter!
