Nanny Bans Dangerous Dahlias

Nanny has donned her jackboots again and have ordered a couple to remove a bed of dahlias from in front of their house because they are a ‘danger’ to drivers.

Brian and Sally Williams have been tending to the dahlias and shrubs on the narrow Hollin House Lane in Loxley, near Sheffield, for the last 28 years. They originally planted the blooms to encourage wildlife and bring colour to the area.

However, Sheffield council have sent them a letter telling them they have just a week to remove them or pay for it to be done by the authority. P

The couple’s daughter, Elizabeth Williams, said they were ‘absolutely devastated’ and that the flowers had been the only thing that helped her father through ill health.

Sheffield council told the BBC:
”We have sympathy with the nearby homeowner who has attempted to stop cars driving over the highway verge on what is a very narrow, single-track lane.

Unfortunately the placing of flower beds, as well as stones and water barrels, on the highway outside the property, could be a danger to other road users."
Why take action now, after 28 years?

One single anonymous complaint!

The Metro reports that neighbours have set up a petition to get the council to change their mind and it already has more than 3,000 signatures.

Sheffield Council Hates Trees

Nanny's chums from Sheffield council have been at war with local residents for some time now, over the council's decision to fell hundreds of trees.

Despite the objection of local residents, the council is of the view that the trees represent a health and safety hazard!

Back in November last year Sheffield City Council contractors began removing eight trees in Rustlings Road at 05:00 GMT on 17 November.

In a manner akin to the Gestapo, doors were knocked on and people were woken up and asked to move their cars so work could begin. Three people were arrested when they, not unreasonably, complained.

Move forward to the present day, and the council continue to arrest people who try to oppose the tree cutting. ITV reports that seven people were arrested yesterday.

However, Nanny is not going to change her plans and issued a somewhat irritated statement (akin to an angry headmistress talking down to her charges):
"The Council is very disappointed that this disruption of lawful highway work is continuing. We have had the programme endorsed by the Courts following legal action by the protest group but the disruption continues to cause unnecessary delay. This delay and disruption is likely to cost the Council Taxpayers of Sheffield a significant amount of money.

Whilst we appreciate that some people have strong views about the city’s trees, we must continue with works under the Streets Ahead contract whilst ensuring the safety of site operatives and the general public remain paramount at all times. In addition, the majority of residents on Chippinghouse Road did not disagree with our proposals for tree works on their road.

We want to reassure the people of Sheffield that every tree being removed as part of the Streets Ahead programme will be replaced on a one for one basis and ultimately, by the end of the contract, there will be more street trees in Sheffield than before the contract commenced in 2012.”
Methinks there is more to this than admitted to by Nanny.

Hang on a minute, STAG suggest that the real issue is profit for a third party company:
"Previously, the Council had built up 30 years of agreements on street trees, based on consultation with communities. These agreements were a commitment to the people of Sheffield – after all, they are our trees.
When in 2012 the street management was outsourced to Amey, these agreements were lost or ignored. Amey have a clear profit motive – if they blitz the city’s trees in the first 5 years of their 25-year contract, they can spend the next 20 years with much lower maintenance costs."
Surely not?!!!

Nanny Bans Bush Trimming

I was more than a little gemused to read that Nanny, apparently, has started to lose her grip on reality (if she ever had one).

I draw this conclusion based on the absurd and insane treatment by Nanny's chums from Sheffield Council of Tracey Smith, who was dismissed last year from her teaching position at Aldine House (a secure unit for problem youths).

Why was Ms Smith dismissed?

She had pruned a bush without conducting a risk assessment!

However, Ms Smith has been vindicated and has been awarded £70,000 compensation (the maximum possible) after successfully arguing her career had been left in ruins following her unfair dismissal.

Incidentally, and I never knew this, Nanny operates something called a "Dismissed Persons Register" (upon which Ms Smith's name was added).

A spokesman for Sheffield Council is quoted by the Telegraph:
“We note the result of the tribunal and we are looking into appealing the decision.

It would be inappropriate for us to comment further than this at this time.”
Nanny really hates to lose!

Booze Matters - Nanny Tries To Save Pensioners

Pass the sick bag someone, I see that Nanny is now having a go at the drinking habits of pensioners.

The BBC's Panorama programme, no doubt at the behest of Nanny, decided to ask Sheffield University to model the effects of a 50p per unit minimum price.

Statisticians estimated the effect would be 50,000 fewer alcohol-related deaths in England among over 65s, over the course of 10 years.

Suffice to say this will now feature on next Monday's Panorama which airs ("oddly" enough) at the same time as Andrew Lansley (who thought minimum pricing was bollocks) has been sacked and the Home Orifice is saying the following:
"We will introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol, ensuring for the first time that alcohol can only be sold at a sensible and appropriate price.

The proposal has the backing of the Royal College of Physicians and the Association of Chief Police Officers and could mean 50,000 fewer crimes and around 900 fewer alcohol related deaths per year by the end of the decade.

We will consult on the level of minimum unit price in the autumn.”
There you have it ladies and gentlemen, Nanny has made her mind up and is using the BBC to do her dirty work for her by pre empting a "hue and cry" over pensioner deaths from alcohol.

In the programme, according to the Telegraph, Sarah Wadd, director of the Substance Misuse and Ageing Research Team at the University of Bedfordshire, says:
“We might be on a cusp of an epidemic of people drinking problematically in old age.”
"We might be"???

That doesn't sound very scientific to me!

Dr Richard Aspinall, a liver specialist at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, said:
"We think of a very visible social disorder, consequences of young people binge drinking on a Saturday night in our town centres but what’s much more hidden is quiet, below the radar drinking at home and it’s very easy for people to drink more than they are actually aware of, to get above the safe limits.”
FFS!

Nanny pretends to be concerned about the welfare of pensioners, that makes me puke!

Were Nanny to be really so concerned about pensioners welfare and well being, she would address the following issues:

- The lousy level of pensions
- The disgraceful "quality" of care being provided to the elderly by public and private healthcare organisations
- Discrimination being practised against the elderly by the NHS in terms of speed and quality of treatments offered
- The patronising treatment of the elderly by society as a whole, and most specifically the state
- The right to assisted death with dignity, as and when someone (not necessarily elderly) wants it etc.

Nanny will not address these issues, instead she will focus on Cameron's fetish of minimum alcohol pricing.

As and when I start to enter my final years I can assure you that the thought of ending up in one of Nanny's homes, on a drip wallowing in my own shit, unwashed uncared for will most certainly drive me to drink.

I want no part Nanny's system for the elderly and will most assuredly (if I am still physically/mentally able) end my days with dignity with a bottle of vodka and a box of pills before Nanny can get her bony hands on me!

This country offers elderly people nothing but misery to look forward to, Nanny should be subsidising their drink not taxing it!

Prats of The Week - South Yorkshire Police

Ooh Err Missus, tis time methinks for another of my prestigious and internationally renowned "Prats of The Week" Awards.

This week it goes to South Yorkshire Police.

For why?

Just ask Peter Tooley (owner of the Party Time party store in Sheffield).

Mr Tooley recently put a mannequin dressed as Colonel Gaddafi in pink tights, holding a sign "you ain't seen me right?", in his doorway.

No harm there then?

Errmm..yes, if you are the two PCSOs who came into his store and ordered him to remove it.

For why?

They deemed that it would be offensive (despite the fact that no one had reported being offended by it), and that it may cause "community tension on a sensitive issue."

Have we really lost our sense of humour as a nation?

South Yorkshire Police, well deserving "Prats of The Week".

Booze Matters - Good For Your Joints

Good News
Good news everyone!

A study by researchers from the University of Sheffield has determined that drinking alcohol may help reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, and cut the risk of developing the disease.

James Maxwell, a rheumatologist at the Rotherham Foundation NHS Trust, told AFP:

"We found that patients who had drunk alcohol most frequently had symptoms that were less severe than those who had never drunk alcohol or only drunk it infrequently"

X-rays showed less damage to joints, and blood tests showed lower levels of inflammation, according to the report, published in the journal Rheumatology.

There was also less pain, swelling and disability.

Needless to say, Nanny's anti drink lobby says that this is no excuse to go out and drink more.

Ahem...yes it is!

The Booze Police

Booze Matters
Did you know my loyal readers that this is "alcohol awareness week"?

No, I didn't know that either, until I by chance came across this wee note (see below) in the Times yesterday.

Speaking personally I don't need any of Nanny's minions to remind me about alcohol, but it is very kind of them to do so!

Regarding the note written by the venerable doctors, I would make a few of observations:

1 They are seriously out of touch, regarding dictating prices that would lead to a £1.50 pint; when was a pint last £1.50?

2 Normal people do not drink gallons of ultra cheap cider. To punish the normal population for the actions of a desperate, sad minority is simply not right.

3 Physician heal thyself: "Although the physical health of doctors compares favourably with that of the general population, they have an increased prevalence of alcohol and drug problems and a higher suicide rate.

Data from the U.S.A. indicate that approximately 10% of physicians become dependent on psychoactive drugs or alcohol at some time during their careers. Dynamic influences in their upbringing, pressure of work and ready access to drugs may all predispose to drug or alcohol misuse.
"

Source Alcohol and drug use and related problems in the medical profession

I also noted in another media organ that there is a "growing campaign for minimum alcohol prices"...errrmmm...no there isn't! This is merely a media invention to give the media something to write about.

Anyhoo, in order to celebrate "alcohol awareness week" I will be consuming a veritable smorgasbord of alcohol, I recommend that you do the same (feel free to buy some using the excellent links on this site).

Sherry enemas all round!

Here is the letter from the doctors, as per The Times:

"Sir,

As Directors of Public Health in the North West, we believe that the time has come for effective action to stop the irresponsible sale of cut-price alcohol by the off-trade. We welcome the Government's recent proposals to introduce a mandatory code for alcohol retailers and believe that this should be implemented at the earliest opportunity to address increased alcohol consumption and health harm in the UK. However, we also urge the Government to take further decisive action by bringing forward legislation to introduce a minimum price per unit for alcohol of 50p per unit.

None of us comes to this policy solution easily. However, despite considerable investment in the NHS and public health messages, a new Licensing Act and efforts by the industry itself, HMRC figures show that the overall consumption of alcohol continues to rise, as measured by volume of alcohol sold. Hospital admissions due to alcohol harm have risen by 64 per cent in the North West in the past five years. Apart from the implications for public health of this situation, we believe that the cost to the NHS in the North West of £400 million per year is simply unsustainable.

Of course, personal responsibility must continue to be part of our collective focus in tackling alcohol consumption, but it is naive for any of us to think it can be the sole focus. Alcohol is sufficiently price elastic for the aggressive price-cutting we have seen in recent years to affect individual consumption. It follows, as Sheffield University has shown, that raising the price of the cheapest alcohol sold would affect overall consumption and would target effectively the consumption of those that drink above moderate levels.

We know that the Government has argued that it does not wish to penalise moderate drinkers. Neither do we. A unit price of 50p means £1.50 for a pint in the pub or £4.50 for a bottle of wine in the supermarket. Is this really too much to pay to save 3,393 lives per year, to cut crimes by 45,800 and save the country £1 billion every year in alcohol-related costs?

We urge the Government to act quickly and decisively. The political leadership that was shown on smoking in public places needs to be shown on alcohol too. As with smoking, the politicians that take a lead in combating alcohol harm may find that they command the public’s respect and support as a result.

Nanny Bans Parents - Again

Modern Parents
You know how yesterday I said that parents should be responsible for the safety of their kids (eg when using paddling pools) and not the state?

Well, what a silly billy I am, I should have known that Nanny had a better idea.

Nanny has decreed that parents are not qualified to look after their kids, as Phillip Smith and sons Jake, aged five, and Aiden, three, found to their cost when Phillip was banned from using Hillsborough Leisure Centre in Sheffield.

For why?

Health and Safety my dear old muckers!

Seeming Nanny's chums at the centre insist that under-eights must be accompanied on a one-to-one basis by adults.

Ironically Mr Smith is a fireman and therefore, one would assume, reasonably adept at handling emergencies and doing first aid.

Surely the responsibility for the safety of the child should rest foremost with the parent, not the state?

Am I so really out of touch and old fashioned (at the tender age of 46), with how things should be, to believe that this?

Educashun - Nanny Bans Schools

EducashunWell the New Year has started with something of a "bang", thanks to Nanny's latest pronouncement wrt educashun.

Those of you with long memories may well recall our "beloved" ex PM, Tony Bliar, stating that "educashun, educashun, educashun" was ZaNuLabour's top priority.

Well folks, Nanny has finally lived up to her promise. Fearful that the word "school" alienates pupils and prevents them from learning, Nanny has banned it and instead wants "schools" to be called "learning centres" or some other pc bollocks name.

FYI, the rot started when Nanny decreed that all polytechnics were in fact "universities".....we all believe that, don't we children???

Anyhoo, I digress, Watercliffe Meadow Primary in Sheffield has adopted the new phraseology.

Linda Kingdon, the head teacher, said that the change would bring the school (sorry "place of learning") closer to real life.

Pah!

I guess on the planet where she lives that may be true, but here on earth that is complete BS.

Here are the words of "wisdom" from Kingdon (who Nanny would have us believe is an "educator"):

"This is Watercliffe Meadow, a place for learning. One reason was many of the parents of the children here had very negative connotations of school.

Instead, we want this to a be a place for family learning, where anyone can come. We were able to start from scratch and create a new type of learning experience. There are no whistles or bells or locked doors. We wanted to deinstitutionalise the place and bring the school closer to real life
."

Dear oh dear, are people like this really allowed to be near children?

Quite how a laissez faire "learning centre" will prepare children for the adult working world of punch cards, monotony, commuting timetables (I know they don't reflect reality) and drudgery I don't know.

I wonder when Nanny will tell the poor little sods in her educashunal system that many of them ain't got no future, and that Nanny won't be able to afford to wipe their bottoms in the future?

Prat of The Week

Prat of The WeekThis week's prestigious Prat of The Week Award goes to none other than Nanny herself, and the Labour government as a whole.

For why, other than their lamentable record in office?

Specifically for this little tale of stupidity and indifference to the views of professionals. I refer to the 101 non emergency hotline, that Nanny foisted on six police regions as part of Labour's manifesto commitment to lessen to load on the 999 line.

Hampshire police have stated publicly that the 101 line has turned out to be a fiasco. The police forces who are piloting the scheme are being swamped with absurd questions about train times, and local tourist attractions.

It is estimated that around 66% of calls made to the 101 line are bollocks, and not related to its intended use.

Hampshire Police are demanding that the roll-out across the country be stopped, until Nanny and her ministers validate its usefulness.

The theory was that 101 would be used to report; intimidation, harassment, vandalism, graffiti, criminal damage, fly-tipping and other environmental problems.

However, Hampshire police receive calls such as:

"Can you tell me the times of trains to Brighton?

I'd like someone to test my smoke alarm.

Do you know when the next bus leaves for Southampton
?"

Oddly enough, in the "old days" when police were more respected and less inclined to arrest you for knocking conkers down from trees, banal questions to the police were often encouraged as a means of establishing a rapport between the citizen and his local "Bobby". The old saying "if you want to know the time, ask a policeman" readily springs to mind.

Anyhoo, those days appear to have long gone, and the police no longer have the time or inclination to interact with the person in the street.

Deputy Chief Constable of Hampshire, Ian Readhead, thinks the 101 line is bollocks and said:

"We made representations to government.

We recommended it was too early to go live with wave two

and that the government should spend more time learning about this
."

Superintendent Nigel Hindle, in charge of call handling at Hampshire police, said:

"The strap line for 101 is 'when it's less urgent than 999.

That was on a leaflet that went through every door in the county.

Across the month we receive about 50 calls that we consider emergency fire and health issues on the 101 service.

The operators are not trained to deal with health and fire issues
."

Hampshire said that it alone needed 18 more telephonists, costing £450K, to cope with the calls.

Leicester and Rutland, Cardiff, Sheffield and Northumberland and Tyne and Wear are also taking part in the initial pilot.

A further 20 forces will join them in the 'second wave', expected early next year.

Nanny's chums in the Home Office have denied that the scheme will be ditched. Instead they are using the weasel phrase:

"We plan to carry out a thorough evaluation of the pilot areas."

Meaning that when all the fuss has died down, the scheme will be quietly dropped (just like so many other harebrained failed schemes that Nanny has introduced with a fanfare).

Nanny well deserves the Prat of The Week Award.

However, as said, the police would find their role in the community less traumatic and more productive if they sought to engage on a personal level with the man in the street. Trying to be helpful with regard to enquires about smoke alarms and bus timetables would in fact be a quite a good thing, not via a 101 line though.

Nanny Bans Shoulders

You know how these days when having your passport photo taken, you are meant to look face on into the camera and not smile?

These rules are all part of Nanny's extra security measures to guard us from the "crescent of evil", that she believes threatens us. Smiling, side ways pictures are apparently a security threat.

Anyhoo, Nanny has come up with another issue with regard to passport photos; that of bare shoulders.

She has banned them.

What?!! I hear you ejaculate (can I say that word on a website?)

Yes, bare shoulders; apparently they are offensive to Muslim countries.

Specifically, bare shoulders of five year old girls.

That at least is what the Sheffield Post Office clerk told Jane Edwards (mother of five year old Hannah) as she presented Hannah's bare shouldered photo for a passport renewal.

The photo was taken at a photo-booth at a local post office for a family trip to the south of France.

The family were told by the jobsworth clerk that it would not be accepted by the Passport Office.

Seemingly, if the clerk was to be believed, she was aware of at least two other cases where applications had been rejected because a person's shoulders were not covered.

Mrs Edwards said:

"I was incensed.

I went back home and checked the form.

Nowhere did it say anything about covering up shoulders.

If it had, I would have done so, but it all seems so unnecessary.

This is quite ridiculous,

I followed the instructions on the passport form to the letter and it was still rejected.

It is just officialdom pandering to political correctness.

It is a total over-reaction.

How can the shoulders of a five-year-old girl offend anyone?

It's not as if anything else was showing,

the dress she wore was sleeveless,

but it has a high neck
."

Seemingly though the Post Office has it wrong, a spokesman for the Identity and Passport Service said that it was not its policy to reject applications with bare shoulders.

Quote:

"The guidance set out on the application form doesn't include it,

this picture should have been absolutely fine.

If people follow those rules there should be no problem.

The Post Office obviously has its rules and we can't comment on that.

We are aware of a case in the past where an error was made involving similar circumstances,

although I don't know the exact details.

Staff should be aware of the rules
."

We shouldn't be so hard on the Post Office, it is used by Nanny as a sort of day care centre these days for the elderly, insane, drunk and unemployed. The staff there have enough to worry about.

When Your Best Isn't Good Enough

When Your Best Isn't Good EnoughNanny is a strict mistress (that phrase will get this site some interesting hits from search engines!) she expects everything to be done "just so", in accordance with her views and rules.

Unfortunately not everyone can live up to her "high standards" and, as such, can be ostracised and rejected by Nanny.

Now we all know that the Samaritans do sterling work for the suicidal, depressed and unhappy. Volunteers man telephone lines 24 hours a day, offering friendly non judgemental counsel and a shoulder to cry on.

It is widely acknowledged, and recognised, that they have saved many lives.

The Samaritans in Sheffield recently went to Nanny's chums, in that much respected national institution "The National Lottery", to ask for a £300K grant for the refurbishment of a new premises that they bought with a legacy; they have to leave their current premises, as the landlord sold it.

Unfortunately their request was rejected on the grounds that they do not do enough for the disadvantaged, asylum seekers and ethnic minorities.

Call me stupid, but are the idiots in the Lottery suggesting that the Samaritans should ask callers first what socio-economic group they come from?

Presumably if you are white and middle class, you are then told to go hang yourself?

The good news is that Nanny's Lottery is spending the money on more deserving causes; £360K is being given to a fund to advise prostitutes.

Nanny is very selective, when choosing who she decides to help.
