Ken,
ReplyDeleteHere in Istanbul, we just put two chickens stuffed with sauasage dressing into the oven. We've got corn pudding, dripping with cheese, green bean casserole, slathered in cheese, salad with yogurt sauce, rice and gravy, and your choice of chocolate chip pudding, chocolate covered lemon cake, or ice cream for dessert. Plus, we've got a a chilled bottle of Turkish Rakı, and white wine.
Tell me, do you think Nanny would approve?
ps: Hop a flight to Istanbul, and we'll set aside some food and booze for you. We don't want you going hungry on Thanksgiving. Have it large!
From a reader in Northern California, we would love to have you as a guest for Thanksgiving. The turkey is already on the grill, and soon I'll be making corn pudding, dressing, and all the rest. Pumpkin pies and pecan pies were made yesterday.
ReplyDeleteWe love reading your blog here, although sometimes I feel a sense of doom as I see the U.S. racing to join you on the path to the nanny state.

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones too. It's not only Americans who can enjoy this wonderful celebration.
I saw a PBS documentary about the wonderful American gourmande Julia Child and she had great things to say about enjoying food and nutrition, vegetarian or otherwise (she liked her meat). And in a non-Nanny-type style. I didn't think it was possible!
Here are some delightful quotations attributed to her:
The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook.
Food labels that say "no fat, no cholesterol" might as well say "no taste, no fun."
I like beer.
I’m a card-carrying carnivore.I’ve got to keep my strength up.
If you're afraid of butter, use cream.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving celebration responsibly!

ReplyDeleteIt was God who created our ability to enjoy and Who gave us good things. False cruel Nanny-type religiosity is not from Jesus. I hope you won't let those who misrepresent Him fool you - look in the New testament to see how He was if you wish.
Though I am conservative in my views about sex and marriage as a follower of Jesus, I'm not a prude - sex was created by God to be fun (see the Song of Solomon if your wish). He could have made it boring, couldn't he? But He didn't.
While on earth He enjoyed parties and wine in moderation. He likes people! He also gives people the freedom to not drink alcohol if they so choose. He is NOT a Nanny.
I smoke too much and need to cut down but also wish that manufacturers would remove the addiction-enhancing additives.
Even God-created nicotine serves a good purpose for some brains. See
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1034701/Smoking-good-memory-concentration.html. Cigarettes have fewer side effects than some anti-depressants for some people - there is really no one-size-fits-all-Nanny-solution to much of life.
He also created fats for a purpose - here is one recently discovered one http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/comfort-food-reduces-stress-scientists-20091125-jjdk.html.
I don't think He made a mistake in creating anything. He made the earth for us to enjoy and Heaven will have no pain for those who choose Him. The good things remind us of He who gave them, and what He is like - not big-nanny-in-the-sky.
Enjoy your fun responsibly - I will be trying to do the same.
