Prats Of The Week - Cefn Hengoed Community School

Prats of The WeekOoh Err Missus...it has been quite a wee while since I have awarded one of my prestigious, and internationally renowned, "Prats of The Week" Awards.

Therefore, without further ado, I award it this week to those in charge of Cefn Hengoed Community.

For why?

Ask Richard Tremelling, the ex head of technology at the school.

Mr Tremelling took his sledge to school in February 2009, as part of a lesson in design technology, and allowed (after testing the conditions himself) two 15 year old male pupils (not 5 year olds etc) in his class to use it themselves during the lesson.

Problem?

Errmm yes actually...can you guess what it is?

Yes, that's right, Mr Tremelling didn't conduct a WRITTEN risk assessment.

His punishment?

- a slap on the wrist?

No!

- a warning letter?

No!

He was fired!

Yes, you read that correctly, Mr Tremelling's "crime" was considered by Nanny to be so heinous that she fired him.

A nice lesson for the kids eh?

Risk is everywhere, do nothing until you have filled in a form.

Ever wondered by so many teenagers hang around street corners looking for trouble?

It's because they are not challenged at school (physically and mentally), and are forbidden from releasing their pent up energy via sport, risk taking etc.

We are reaping the harvest of placing kids in cotton wool.

Sadly for Mr Tremelling only now, almost 2 years later, is his case has only just been heard at an appeal.

The result?

The two day disciplinary hearing ruled that Mr Tremelling should be given a formal reprimand, but be allowed to remain on the professional register.

Two years too late!

The school is still adamant it was right...arrogant as well as pratish!

Those in charge of Cefn Hengoed Community School, well deserving Prats of The Week!

  1. Ken,

His real crime was doing something without getting Nanny's approval.

This teacher should be rewarded, not punished.
I am told that one of the biggest enemies of teachers that teach this age group,(15) is boredom. Lessons are far too dry and uninteresting and, whereas in my day, as you point out Ken, we could release tension and energy playing Rugby and other games in PE, now they can't due to Nanny6's obcession with wrapping Kids in cotton wool.

This teacher clearly showed initiative and generated interest in his subject rather than just going through the motions as Nanny prefers teachers to do.

The real villian in this story is the prat that decided to report it to the authorities, no doubt on one of Nanny's many grass lines....I wonder who did report it?....His colleagues?...The head teacher?....The parents?.....Answers please on a post card.

Those ruining er, sorry, running Cefn Hengoed Community well deserve your award, Ken! I wholly agree with your assessment of the matter. I was utterly appalled at the treatment Mr Tremelling received. People commit serious crimes and are treated far more leniently. Indeed, there are always some liberal do-gooders crawling out of the woodwork to speak out against punishing them. Where were they in this case? Their silence on the matter was deafening! Fully agree with your observations too, Tonk.

    Ken,

I read yesterday that the guy that threw the snowball at the "police officer" was given a two week curfew......Sounds odd,.....was he out late when he threw the snowball; sounds more like the kind of punishment you give a kid, not a parent.....Mind you, that is nanny's way; treat adults like kids and kids like adults.

I also understand that the "police officer" that was snowballed, was not actually a police officer, but a PCSO.....Perhaps she was sore that the guy didn't respect her hi-viz......I thought that the PCSOs main role was to build bridges and relationships with their local communities; I'm sure grassing a member of that community for having a bit of lighthearted fun in the snow will help in that regard.
No wonder we're the laughing stock of Europe and refered to as Monkey Island by the rest of Europe.
