Dons Boycott Oriel Over Rhodes

Around 150 Oxford University academics are refusing to teach at Oriel Oxford after it decided to keep the controversial statue of Cecil Rhodes.

Last month the college decided not to take it down for practical reasons.

Now, some academics are boycotting Oriel and have signed a petition saying the statue "glorifies colonialism".

They are refusing to give tutorials to undergraduates from Oriel or attend talks there.

The solution to this boycott is simple, sack the dons for breach of contract!

Prats of The Week - The Middle Common Room Magdalen College Oxford

Dear oh dear, who would have thought that what was once one of the best universities in the world would end up as a breeding ground for utter prattery?

I refer of course to the decision by the students of the Middle Common Room of Magdalen College Oxford to remove the portrait of The Queen from their room, lest it offends someone.

The students there have every right to hang pictures of whatever they wish on their walls (eg Rhodes), and have every right to remove a picture of the Queen.

However, the reasons they chose to remove the picture (ie that it might "offend" someone because of issues to do with the days of empire) are feeble-minded to say the least.

1 The Queen came to the throne when Britain was already dismantling her empire.

2 The Queen is the head of state.

3 Monarchs have had connections to Oxford for centuries.

4 If you are offended by a picture of the head of state then seek therapy.

Simply put, if that is the best intellectual argument they can come up with then Oxford needs to radically overhaul its admissions policy; because it is clear that they are currently admitting feeble-minded idiots!

Nanny Bans Imperial Measurements

Nanny's chums at Oxford University are upset with feet, inches, pounds, ounces etc etc.

For why?

They worry that the imperial measurements are 'tied deeply to the idea of the Empire'. Therefore Nanny has decreed that imperial measurements should be 'decolonised', due to its links to the British Empire.

Decolonising plans by Oxford's maths, physics and life sciences departments suggest the teaching of the measurements in the curriculum may change, according to The Telegraph.

I am no Oxford Don, but I am pretty sure that feet, inches etc were used in this country before the Empire actually came into being.

America uses the imperial system, and I seem to recall that they fought many years ago to leave the empire.

Regarding using the metric system; well France, Belgium, Italy, Gremany etc use that system and they have all had empires.

Were I a student at Oxford I would demand my money back, because the people in charge appear to be utter morons!

Oxford University Bans Clapping

It seems that mankind's tradition (it goes back to at least the 6th century BC) of clapping when showing approval has fallen foul of Nanny and her minions.

Students at the University of Oxford have voted to ‘replace clapping’ with a silent wave because it ‘could trigger anxiety’.

They are instead being told to use ‘jazz hands’, where they wave their hands in the air.

The new rules will apply at student union events, and if successful, rolled out to other societies and events.

This makes the students of Oxford look utterly ridiculous.

How did mankind survive before 21st century Nanny and her minions came along?

Oxford's New Portraits

Oxford University is revealing the identities of more than 20 people whose portraits will be put on display to try to "promote greater diversity".

It wants to redress the balance from the university's walls being lined with pictures of "dead white males" by adding more women and ethnic minorities.

Nothing wrong with that, and all perfectly laudable. However, couldn't they have found an ex alumni a little more inspiring than Esther Rantzen?

Oxford University Endorses Racism

Knobhead of The Millennium, Ntokozo Qwabe, is in the news again.

Jan Hendrik Ferreira, a South African social worker based in London, started a change.org petition with an open letter to Louise Richardson, the Oxford University vice-chancellor.
Mr Ntokozo Qwabe and friend violated a person’s dignity, publicly degraded and humiliated her, and created a highly offensive situation which Mr Ntokozo Qwabe has since taken great pleasure in narcissistically boasting over her reaction across social media."
The petition to have Qwabe sent down from Oxford or stripped of his scholarship has been rejected by the university which said it would violate his “free speech”.

As per the Telegraph, an Oxford spokesman said:
"Our duty of care to all members of the university means we do not discuss individuals.

Oxford is a place where non-violent speech, however objectionable, can be expressed and challenged. Our students may voice opinions which others believe to be misguided or which they find offensive. They have a right to do this, but in exercising it we expect them to respect other people and the law."

That being the case, would they have said the same if Qwabe was white and made his remarks to a black waitress?

Meanwhile Qwabe wallows in his notoriety, he noted that "white" people had started a petition to have his scholarship revoked or for Oxford to send him down, and added of requests for his comment “we will only engage with white media when we have the land back”.

A Knobhead indeed!

Knobhead of The Millennium - Ntokozo Qwabe

Kudos to Ntokozo Qwabe (of the Rhodes Must Fall student group in Oxford) for demonstrating to the entire world that he is indeed the Knobhead of The Millennium.

Not only is he a hypocrite (castigating Rhodes, despite being a Rhodes Scholar), he is an odious racist; refusing to tip a waitress in South Africa because she was white, then gleefully positing his abhorrent views on his Faecesbook page.

The Independent has a summary of the sordid affair here.

Ntokozo Qwabe well deserving Knobhead of The Millennium!

Cecil Rhodes

I am gemused to see that Oriel College Oxford has decided to ignore the spoilt, ignorant brats who want the statue of Cecil Rhodes torn down.

It is a pity that the college allowed this nonsense to drag on for so long.

My advice to leader of the rabble, who seems so incensed about Rhodes, is that if he is so incensed about Rhodes he should refund the scholarship funds that he receives as a Rhodes Scholar!

Advice To The Oxford Union

Given that no man or woman is a saint (once their lives are placed under a microscope) and given that people's views about what is right and wrong changes with time, why don't we pull down every statue ever erected?

For good measure, since Rhodes is so offensive to you, let us also abolish the Rhodes Scholarship.

I assume that those of you who currently benefit from it will be refunding all monies received?

Student Hypocrisy

How wonderful it is to be a student, and to be so morally sure of your views about the world and how it should be run.

Kudos to Ntokozo Qwabe, an Oxford student, who is leading a campaign to remove a statue of Cecil Rhodes from Oriel College because Rhodes is no longer regarded in quite the same light as he was back in Victorian times.

A truly moral outlook!

Whilst there can be a theoretical rationale for revisionism (eg were the college to have had a statue of Hitler or Jimmy Savile, it would be expected that these statues should be removed), sometimes revisionism doesn't quite stack up especially when the revisionist has a few issues himself.

You see dear reader, Mr Qwabe is a Rhodes' scholar (ie his education is being funded in part by money derived from a fund set up by Cecil Rhodes). In 2014 the fund spent £8M on 89 scholars.

There's irony for you!

Unperturbed by this apparent "irony" Mr Qwabe, and members of the Rhodes Must Fall movement, have said that paying homage to the British imperialist is at odds with the university’s “inclusive culture”.

Mr Qwabe is in fact adamant that the money wasn't Rhodes' in the first place. As per the Telegraph:
Rhodes did not have a scholarship. It was never his money. All that he looted must absolutely be returned immediately."
Mr Qwabegoes goes on to argue that he is simply taking back “tiny fractions” of what Rhodes looted during his time in Africa.
I’m no beneficiary of Rhodes. I’m a beneficiary of the resources and labour of my people which Rhodes pillaged and slaved.
Ah the certainty and moral high ground of youth!

Fortunately Mr Qwabe is still young enough not to be tainted by the "older person's" disease of hypocrisy.

The Past Is Offensive and Should Be Banned

In a remarkable fuss over nothing that can only occur in a university, where seemingly students have too much time on their hands, colleges at the University of Oxford have been drawn into a 'race row' after advertising New Orleans and 1920s-themed balls, to be held in May 2016.

The problem?

According to some students the balls may cause offence to female and ethnic minority students.

For why?

Well, according to the complainers, the 1920's were a time when people of different ethnic origins and women were not largely present in colleges.

Magdalen College’s ball, inspired by "The Great Gatsby", promises to take students "back to 1926". It has been marketed using the quote:
"Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!"
Arushi Garg, a law student at the college, is quoted by the Telegraph:

"Obviously my demographic (woman of colour from a former colony that remains a developing country) makes me less likely than others to uncritically long for a past that privileged some more than others.

But it would be nice if they cut down on the nostalgia a bit, because if we were re-living the past, the corridors of institutional spaces like Magdalen/Oxford is definitely not where you would find people of my gender, race and nationality.

I wrote to the Magdalen organisers and they engaged quite respectfully with me, and are communicating with me to understand why I think this is problematic."
Lincoln college has faced criticism for "cultural appropriation" (what does that mean in English?) due to the marketing around its New Orleans-themed ball.

The co-chairmen of the student union’s Campaign for Racial Awareness and Equality and others have said that it promotes "nostalgia for an era steeped in racism."

As noted, only in a university would you find allegedly intelligent people getting hot under the collar over a fancy dress dance. Whatever era you look at, it would offend someone from somewhere. The present day isn't exactly heaven on earth either!

I am surprised they haven't complained about the word "balls" to describe the dances, given that it clearly has sexist connotations!

Nanny Bans Racks

Loyal readers may recall that back in March I wrote the following:
"Nowadays some students seem to take themselves far too seriously, as Madeline Grant (who is reading English lit and languages at St Hilda's Oxford) found to her cost recently.

Miss Grant was standing for election as Oxford Union Librarian, and her election flier stated:

I don't hack, I just have a great rack."

She went on to say that she was "
committed to helping members pull" after she organised a "sell-out Valentine's social".

Needless to say some Nanny brainwashed students had a major sense of humour failure, and branded the material as "deeply offensive".

Fellow students accused her of "damaging the perception of women" and showing a “distinct lack of judgement”.

Miss Grant's manifesto was therefore censored
."
Unfortunately for Ms Grant, her student Union seems to be run by a right bunch of humourless individuals. Not content with censoring her manifesto, and disregarding the fact that she lost, the Union summoned Ms Grant to appear before a committee recently.

They subjected her to a four-and-a-half hour grilling, then fined her £120.

I have no idea if Ms Grant paid the fine but, quite rightly she has quit the Union.
What ever happened to students having a sense of humour and supporting free speech eh?

Humourless Students

Oh dear how sad to see that, thanks to Nanny, even students appear to have lost their sense of humour. I well recall the days of student politics when candidates would dress as gorillas, or in fact a potted plant would stand and where the voters would ask the size of a particular candidate's "appendage".

Nowadays some students seem to take themselves far too seriously, as Madeline Grant (who is reading English lit and languages at St Hilda's Oxford) found to her cost recently.

Miss Grant was standing for election as Oxford Union Librarian, and her election flier stated:

I don't hack, I just have a great rack."

She went on to say that she was "committed to helping members pull" after she organised a "sell-out Valentine's social".

Needless to say some Nanny brainwashed students had a major sense of humour failure, and branded the material as "deeply offensive".

Fellow students accused her of "damaging the perception of women" and showing a “distinct lack of judgement”.

Miss Grant's manifesto was therefore censored.

So much for freedom of speech and expression!

Sadly Miss Grant lost by 97 votes.

Nanny's Spy in The Cab

I am more than a little gobsmacked to learn that Oxford City Council has decreed that all of Oxford's 662 taxis must be fitted with microphones and CCTV cameras.

For why?

The council wants all conversations and images in the cab to be recorded, cameras etc will start automatically as soon as the ignition is fired and will continue up to 30 minutes after the engine is turned off.

Cabbies must keep recordings for a defined period of time afterwards.

This is a gross intrusion into personal privacy by the state.

As noted many times before on this site, councils are the enemies of the people.

Social Engineering

Social Engineering
Nanny Cameron and Clegg are giving Oxbridge a hard time at the moment.

Their gripe being that not enough poor and ethnic minority pupils are being given the opportunity to study there and at other top universities.

This is somewhat ironic given that they are both from privileged backgrounds, and that they both went to Oxbridge.

When will Nanny learn that social engineering does not work, and that it invariably makes things worse?

Like it or not, educashun (beyond the 3 "R's") is a privilege not a right.
