Don't Film Suspect Packages!

I appreciate that everyone now thinks that "if it moves, explodes, farts etc" then they should film it.

However, seriously, if you see a suspect package (pre or post explosion) report it and get out of the area calmly and quickly.

DO NOT APPROACH THE SUSPECT DEVICE TO FILM IT!

DoD Does Irony

Loyal readers will recall that on occasions I have written about surveillance of phones, emails etc. My thanks to a Twitter chum of mine who gave me the the heads up about the following.

It seems that the USA's DoD is also concerened about such matters, and has therefore decided to issue its people with NSA proof phones (despite the fact the the FBI has called for encryption keys to be made available to law enforcement agencies- there's irony for you!).

As per the inquirer:
"THE US DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE (DoD) has started rolling out Silent Circle's 'NSA-proof' Blackphone, despite FBI claims that encryption is a "huge problem" for law enforcement.

Silent Circle chairman Mike Janke revealed during an interview with NextGov that the company has been providing the DoD with a job lot of highly encrypted smartphones in a trial for soldiers and staff to use for work and play following a year of secret testing.

The DoD was unable to confirm the move, but a spokeswoman for the Defence Information Systems Agency (DISA), which oversees the Pentagon’s mobility programme, said in a statement: "DISA's top priority when it comes to secure mobile technology is producing enterprise capabilities that the entire DoD, as well as other federal agencies, can leverage."

The news that the Pentagon has given the Blackphone its seal of approval will come as a surprise to many, as it did to Silent Circle it seems.

"The wild thing about it is that we’re a Swiss firm," said Janke. "Our phones aren’t produced in the US, but because the [DoD] can test our phone in a lab - they can look at the code that’s open source - they’ve been testing it for a year now and using it."

The move is perhaps surprising given the FBI's recent moves to dodge smartphone encryption by urging communications providers to install backdoors so that criminal activity can be monitored and stopped."
That being said, the safest way to avoid state surveillance is to stick to good old fashioned word of mouth conversations (sans mobile phones and other bugs).

Big Brother - SIM Hack

Aside from hacking into pc's, it seems that US and UK Nanny has also been hacking into SIM cards.

As per The Intercept, Nanny has hacked into the internal computer network of Gemalto the largest manufacturer of SIM cards in the world, stealing encryption keys used to protect the privacy of cellphone communications across the globe.

Nanny's Motivational Texts

I see that Nanny is trying a new tactic in her war against obesity, namely sending obese people motivational texts.

Seemingly 500 obese people in Stoke-on-Trent who sign up for the £10,000 10 week scheme will be the joyful recipients of messages such as:

- "Use the stairs more"
- "Eat more fruit" etc.

Cabinet member for health Adrian Knapper is quoted by the BBC:
"On average it costs the same amount [£10,000] to perform just one intervention operation to help people manage their weight.

Our programme means people who already want to lose weight and have signed up with us to get support will receive a cheap and effective nudge to help keep them motivated."
I have to question how effective this will really be, whenever I receive a spam text I simply bin it.

Manners Maketh Man and Sainsbury's

One of the by-products of living in the Nanny state, wherein self responsibility and the consequences of our actions have been eradicated by the state, is the general lack of manners that pervades society; manners after all indicate that we have empathy and respect for others, and that we are cognisant that our actions and words affect others.

Thus is is interesting to see the debate that has sprung up over an incident in Sainsbury's Crayford the other day, where a checkout lady refused to serve a customer (Jo Clarke) who was talking on her mobile phone. Sainsbury's, at the time, sent the customer a £10 voucher along with an apology. However, as sometimes happens with "small" incidents, the story has rather gained traction and the BBC has gained sight of a letter from Sainsbury's:
"It is clear this story has touched a nerve as the weight of comment shows.

However, we are also pleased that this specific story is leading to a wider debate on politeness....

...the discussion this has created leads us all to think twice before reaching for our mobile phones and to recognise the great job the many thousands of sales assistants working across retail do.."
Seemingly the Sainsbury's worker told Ms Clarke that it was company policy not to serve people who were occupied with their mobile phones, but that was denied at the time by the company.

I have a simple view on this, it is rude RUDE to talk on a mobile when interacting with another human being.

PERIOD!

There is a certain type of person who seems to regard shop assistants, waiters etc etc as second class citizens who do not deserve to be treated with the same courtesy as others. At this point we can all come up with examples of rude sales staff, waiters etc. However, that does not mean we should tar all staff with the same brush.

Manners are there for all, whether you are royalty or someone who is down on their luck sleeping on a park bench. Treat people with the same courtesy and respect as you would wish to be treated yourself!

Miss Clarke's response to the furore:
"I think everybody’s been guilty of it (using a mobile at a checkout) sometime in their life – that’s how it is.”
Well I haven't, have you?

O2 Censors Nanny Knows Best

My thanks to loyal (but disappointed) reader Mark, who has advised me of the following:

"Hey Ken, Trying to access your site on my O2 mobile internet I noticed that it is now "subject to customer protection" and therefore restricted to over 18s.

Have I missed all the smut and objectionable content? If so, can you please put it back.

Thanks,

Mark
"

This is all the more nironic, as in 2006 I wrote an article for the O2 magazine...what was it about???...ermmm???..

Oh yes..

The Nanny State!

"I would like to recommend that you try to lay your hands on the Spring 2006 edition of O2, the magazine published by O2. It is not available in the shops, but distributed direct to businesses.

Anyhoo, in this edition there is a particularly fine article written against the Nanny State, in which the author (who reserves particular disdain for the Treasury) argues that state interference is throttling business.

The article is lucid, relevant, punchy and well researched.

Oh and by the way, the article is written by me.
"

I will drop O2 a line and ask them why they are censoring this site. I will update you if I get a response.

In the meantime, if anyone can find any smut on this site please could they send it to me:)

Don't Be Evil

Don't Be EvilNaughty Google, the company whose motto is "Don't be evil", seems to have committed something of a security "faux pas".

You may recall back in 2008 that it started sending vehicles around the world, collecting data for its worldwide street view product?

Well, some of the data it collected included household computer passwords and emails.

Oops!

All a terrible mistake of course, the VP of Engineering and Research (Alan Eustace) is mortified and promises that the data will be deleted asap.

This provides a pertinent reminder to all of us that our electronic communications are subject, and open, to monitoring.

I would also like to remind you all that your mobile phone, when switched on, provides those who are interested with a physical fix on your location and can also be used to eavesdrop on your conversations.

By the way, did you also know that mobile phones that are switched off can be turned on remotely by third parties (if they have the right equipment)? The only way to prevent this happening is for the battery to be removed.

Bin Brother - Mobiles 'R Us

I see that employees of Biffa (wasn't he a regular on the front of the Beano, or was it Biffo?) will be given £1.75M worth of Vodafone BlackBerrys.

Biffa, aside from being a stalwart of the Beano, is also a waste disposal company (ie it employs many of the country's binmen).

The phones will be used to snoop on both householders (eg photographing "environmental crimes", such as an overfull bin) and the binmen themselves (mobiles have tracking devices etc).

At least this time everyone (binmen and householders) are being treated equally.

That at least is progress!

Dishonest Greedy Bastards

Mobile Phone Operators
Re yesterday's article about Nanny's plans to "outsource" the responsibility for storing data on our phone calls, emails and internet activity to the private sector.

It seems that she may be about to hit a slight "snafu", thanks to the activities of a number of staff (hereinafter referred to as dishonest, greedy, bastards) at T Mobile who have happily been flogging customer details to rival companies.

The Information Commissioner is, quite rightly, livid at this wholesale plundering of private/confidential data.

The trouble is, the problem is not just confined to the a small number of dishonest greedy bastards at T Mobile.

It is in fact endemic within the entire mobile phone industry (my own mobile phone has been, on occasions, on the receiving end of cold calls from rival operators who could only have received my details from dishonest greedy bastards working for my mobile phone provider), and doubtless within call centres (most especially offshore ones, which are infiltrated by professional criminal gangs) and other "wired/wireless" services providers.

This lays everyone of us to having our private data (including the contents of emails, texts etc) sold off to all and sundry, and used against us by dishonest, greedy, bastards.

Nanny, by requiring these companies to keep even more detailed records on us, is placing even more of the private details of our lives (and indeed our lives themselves) in the hands of these dishonest, greedy, bastards.

Nanny's database plan must be stopped, here and now, before we lose the last vestiges of control over our lives.

The True Nature of ZaNuLabour

ZaNuLabour
Nanny's desire to keep tabs on our phone calls and emails, via building a massive central database, had taken a wee bit of a setback.

For why?

Nanny, despite being all things to all men (in her deluded mind), is not up to building such an enormous database viz; the costs, the size, the security issues etc etc.

So my loyal readers, are we to conclude that the project is dead?

Why of course not!

Nanny has come up with a "brilliant" solution.

She is making the companies that provide email and phone services responsible for keeping records!

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer's personal communications, showing who they are contacting, when, where and which websites they are visiting (registering every online click).

As an added bonus, Nanny will grant a staggering 653 public bodies the right to access this information. These bodies include our old "friends" in our "respected, competent and trustworthy" local councils, the police, the Financial Services Authority (the body which oversaw, but didn't react to, the financial meltdown), the Ambulance Service, fire authorities and prison governors (eh?).

The final icing on the cake of Nanny's master plan, is that these organs of the state will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to access the information. All they will require is the authorisation of a senior police officer, or the equivalent of an unelected deputy head of department at a local authority.

Common purpose anyone?

By the way, the private firms will be paid at least £2BN per annum (of our money) to spy on us!

The Information Commissioner's Office thinks that this idea is bollocks (as do I):

"The Information Commissioner believes that the case has yet to be made for the collection and processing of additional communications data for the population as a whole being relevant and not excessive."

The legislation won't come before Parliament until after the General Election, therefore we must ensure that ZaNuLabour are kicked out of office.

The state has become the enemy of the people, Daily Telegraph take note!

Funny That!
Given the restrictions and petty rules of our Nanny state, you would have thought that driving whilst using a mobile, driving without due care and attention, causing an accident due to reckless driving then leaving the scene of an accident before the police turn up was against the law.

Parenting By Text

Parenting By TextAs we all know, Nanny hates parents. In Nanny's view parents are pretty poor at their job, the state provides a far more robust and efficient means of educating and bringing up children.

Indeed, Nanny is so keen to keep parents away from their children that she proactively encourages both parents to go to work and leave their kids at Nanny's day care centres, schools and other state run organs for as many hours a day as possible.

I should point out that the added benefit that Nanny gets out of both parents working is a very nice boost, via taxation, to her rapidly dwindling finances.

Anyhoo, to further tighten her grip on the lives of families, and most especially the children, Nanny is launching a new scheme whereby she will send text messages to parents telling them how to bring up their children and how to solve their relationship problems.

This little scheme, called "Parent Know How", will cost us £44M.

The hapless parents who want Nanny to help them live their lives will be able to text queries to counselling services, and log onto special social networking sites.

Nanny is particularly keen to target single parents with her text messages.

In a variation of this scheme, there will also be a text message service whereby a partner can text Nanny if they suspect that their partner is having an affair.

That brings a whole new layer of state intrusion into people's lives, now it is not just neighbours and councils spying on our smoking and garbage disposal habits but Nanny will now be spying (via our loved ones) on our bedroom habits.

I have my own suggestion for a new text service, it's called "Fark Off Nanny". You simply text in the appropriate "F Off" phrase, and it gets sent directly to the mobile phones of all members of the government and to the local council(s) of your choice.

I reckon that would be a real winner!

What do you think?

I am open to offers from technologically savvy people, who would like to set this up with me in partnership.

Note - this idea is now copyright.

The Dangers of Lamposts

Have you ever been wandering down the street, texting away merrily on your "Raspberry", when suddenly you find yourself walking into a lamppost?

Have no fear, you need injure yourselves no more.

Nanny has come up with the perfect solution to the menace of lampposts.

She is going to wrap them in padding.

Yes, that's right, she will pad them for your safety and comfort!

It has finally come to this, Nanny really does wnat to wrap us up in cotton wool!

A pilot scheme has been launched in Brick Lane (London), after it was found to have the highest number of "walking and texting" injuries in the country.

Seemingly 10% of people have hurt themselves while focused on their mobile phone screen, that at least is the finding of a survey conducted by 118 118 (the phone directory service). Quite how reliable this "statistic" is I have no idea.

The charity Living Streets has teamed up with 118 118, to test a scheme to pad lampposts.

A poll will be carried out on Brick Lane to gauge the response of locals.

If successful, the concept will be rolled out in Birmingham, Manchester, and Liverpool.

This sounds like complete bollocks, and I can only assume is a rather a lame PR stunt by 118 118.

The cheaper solution to these "walk and text" injuries is simple:

LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING!

Nanny Bans Mosquito Again

Nanny Bans Mosquito AgainYou will recall that way back in April 2006 I wrote about a rather nifty little device that helps dispel annoying anti social groups of teenagers and youths, who hang around in groups around shop doorways etc.

The device is known as the "Mosquito" and works by emitting a high-frequency sound that irritates youths, but not the rest of the population.

A rather nifty and clever idea, given that all other methods that adults once used to move anti social teenagers on (eg a clip around the ear) have been banned.

Unfortunately Nanny still doesn't like it.

Sir Albert Aynsley-Green, the Children's Commissioner for England appointed to represent the views of the country's 11 million children, wants it banned. He has started a campaign, called Buzz Off, asking for the Mosquito to be banned on grounds that it infringes the rights of young people.

Sir Albert says:

"These devices are indiscriminate and target all children and young people, including babies, regardless of whether they are behaving or misbehaving.

The use of measures such as these are simply demonising children and young people, creating a dangerous and widening divide between the young and the old.

This device is a quick fix. It's not tackling the root of the problem and it's indiscriminate
."

I agree.

However, until parents are forced to take responsibility for removing their anti social offspring from the streets at night and during the day, and the police start to act as police (instead of telling the public to "have a go" - just like Gary Newlove did) what else are people meant to do?

It is all very well whining about the rights of youths and teens, but what about the rights of the rest of the population when confronted with anti social teens etc?

Make the parents take responsibility for their anti social offspring, and then there will be no need for the Mosquito.

-Curfew the entire family, ie put them under semi house arrest

-Remove the family's TVs, mobile phones, DVD's, iPods etc

-Cut/stop their benefits (or fine them if they are not on benefits)

Scum

Scum
Mrs Helen Newlove, widow of Garry Newlove (who was kicked to death by scum):

"Parents should take responsibility for their children. Garry and I have brought up three girls together to respect other people and to be home, not walking the streets causing damage and intimidating other people by drinking and abusive language."

Exactly!

It's not the state's role to bring up children.

Cheshire Police Chief Constable Peter Fahy, commenting on the murder:

"I personally think we cannot have a society where law abiding people like Garry Newlove cannot go out and challenge people that are damaging their property, otherwise we'll just have the yobs ruling the streets.

People should go out and certainly confront, that's my own personal view
."

Three points re Fahy's remarks:

1 That's exactly what Mr Newlove did, and he got murdered for doing it

2 It is meant to be the role of the police to patrol the streets and to deal with criminal behaviour

3 Mr Newlove had tried to ask for police and council help before, at various meetings. However, he became so frustrated at the lack of action that he walked out of one of the meetings. Why did the council and police not help him?

Human scum, such as those who murdered Mr Newlove are formed in their early years by parents who indulge them (ie they don't say no), let them run riot and ignore them.

It is very easy to blame "society", the blame lies full square with the parents.

Question:

Why do parents allow "adolescents" out on the streets at all times of day and night?

Answer:

Because they don't care.

Conclusion

The blame lies full square with the parents.

Solution:

-Curfew the entire family, ie put them under semi house arrest

-Remove the family's TVs, mobile phones, DVD's, iPods etc

-Cut/stop their benefits (or fine them if they are not on benefits)

"Parents should take responsibility for their children. Garry and I have brought up three girls together to respect other people and to be home, not walking the streets causing damage and intimidating other people by drinking and abusive language."

Gang Culture

Gang Culture
As Nanny and her lackeys in the media work themselves up into a frenzy over the "gang culture", that we are told is sweeping Britain; it is time for a little pause for thought as to why we have groups of teenage lads huddling together on the streets in gangs, and what might be done.
  • It's not a new phenomena, look to Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet was basically a love story set amongst gang violence. Less hysteria from the media and politicians is needed.

  • Teenage males need strong male role models. When they have no strong male at home (be it biological father or father figure), they will seek role models elsewhere. This of course flies against the face of Nanny's love affair with single parents.

  • Parents who allow their teenage children to roam the streets at night, need to be "reminded" that this is a sure fire way for teenagers to find themselves in trouble.

Where the parents continue to allow their kids to roam at will at night (and those kids are found to be getting into trouble with the law), appropriate action against the parents needs to be taken. That which is most of value to the parents should be seized, ie pc's, TV's, CD collection, mobile phones etc.

    After that, target their benefits.

  • Those that would seek to mentor and act as strong male role models for these youths (eg scout masters, youth centre workers etc) are put off by Nanny's myriad rules and regulations re interaction with children.

Nanny and the media now assume that all males who wish to interact with under 18's are potential paedophiles, the rules set up by Nanny to weed out the small minority of people who are paedophiles are putting off the majority of those who aren't. The rules need to be changed.

  • Nanny's middle class abhorrence of boxing has led to the closure of boxing rings, both in gyms and above pubs. These were ideal places for teenage males to be trained to handle their aggression and to take some pride in themselves, under the guidance of a male mentor. Bring back the boxing gym.

  • Nanny's dislike of competitive team sports has led to a decline in group after school sports clubs; eg football etc. These team games are an ideal way for teenage males to bond and to learn to handle their aggression, plus let off steam. Competitive team sports need to be assertively encouraged.

  • The feminisation of schooling, whereby male teachers are on the decline, again leads to trouble. Teenage males need a strong hand, that is best delivered and administered by a strong male teacher. More male teachers are required.
Like it or not teenage males, if left to their own devices, are a bloody nuisance and a danger to themselves and others.

On the assumption that we as a society do not intend to start sterilising people, or sealing off deprived areas with watch towers and fences, then the only option we have is to take the time and trouble to address the issues above and reverse the damage that Nanny has done.

We will hear a lot from Nanny, and the media, in the coming weeks over this. Brown will tell us that he will ensure that gun crime is eliminated, and that the gang culture will be eradicated.

However, unless his solutions cover the above issues, there will be no change for the good whatsoever.

Educashun

EducashunI recently came across this open letter written by a physics teacher, Wellington Grey, and posted on his website.

He decries the failures of Nanny's physics exam system, and questions the relevance of the questions asked on the subject.

I suspect there are teachers, of other subjects, throughout the country who could write equally damning letters about Nanny's failing educashun system.

For once, I will shut up and let someone else do the talking.

Here is Wellington Grey's letter in full:

"I am a physics teacher. Or, at least I used to be. My subject is still called physics. My pupils will sit an exam and earn a GCSE in physics, but that exam doesn’t cover anything I recognize as physics. Over the past year the UK Department for Education and the AQA board changed the subject. They took the physics out of physics and replaced it with… something else, something nebulous and ill defined. I worry about this change. I worry about my pupils, I worry about the state of science education in this country, and I worry about the future physics teachers — if there will be any.

I graduated from a prestigious university with a degree in physics and pursued a lucrative career in economics which I eventually abandoned to teach. Economics and business, though vastly easier than my subject, and more financially rewarding, bored me. I went into teaching to return to the world of science and to, in what extent I could, convey to pupils why one would love a subject so difficult.

For a time I did. For a time, I was happy.

But this past academic year things changed. The Department for Education and the AQA board brought in a new syllabus for the sciences. One which greatly increased the teaching of `how science works.’ While my colleagues expressed scepticism, I was hopeful. After all, most pupils will not follow science at a higher level, so we should at least impart them with a sense of what it can tell us about our universe.

That did not happen

The result is a fiasco that will destroy physics in England.

The thing that attracts pupils to physics is its precision. Here, at last, is a discipline that gives real answers that apply to the physical world. But that precision is now gone. Calculations — the very soul of physics — are absent from the new GCSE. Physics is a subject unpolluted by a torrent of malleable words, but now everything must be described in words.

In this course, pupils debate topics like global warming and nuclear power. Debate drives science, but pupils do not learn meaningful information about the topics they debate. Scientific argument is based on quantifiable evidence. The person with the better evidence, not the better rhetoric or talking points, wins. But my pupils now discuss the benefits and drawbacks of nuclear power plants, without any real understanding of how they work or what radiation is.

I want to teach my subject, to pass on my love of physics to those few who would appreciate it. But I can’t. There is nothing to love in the new course. I see no reason that anyone taking this new GCSE would want to pursue the subject. This is the death of physics.

Specific Complaints:
My complaints about the new syllabus fall into four categories: the vague, the stupid, the political, and the non-science.

The Vague:
The specification provided by the AQA (available at their website) is vaguely worded. Every section starts with either the phrase ‘to evaluate the possible hazards and uses of…’ or ‘to compare the advantages and disadvantages of…’ without listing exactly what hazards, uses, advantages or disadvantages the board actually requires pupils to learn. The amount of knowledge on any given topic, such as the electromagnetic spectrum, could fill an entire year at the university level. But no guidance is given to teachers and, as a result, the exam blindsides pupils with questions like:

Suggest why he [a dark skinned person] can sunbathe with less risk of getting skin cancer than a fair skinned person.

To get the mark, pupils must answer:

More UV absorbed by dark skin (more melanin)
Less UV penetrates deep to damage living cells / tissue
Nowhere does the specification mention the words sunscreen or melanin. It doesn’t say pupils need to know the difference between surface dead skin and deeper living tissue. There is no reason any physics teacher would cover such material, or why any pupil should expect to be tested on it.

The Stupid:
On topics that are covered by the specification, the exam board has answers that indicate a lack of knowledge on the writer’s part. One question asks `why would radio stations broadcast digital signals rather than analogue signals?’ An acceptable answer is:

Can be processed by computer / ipod [sic]
Aside from the stupidity of the answer, (iPods, at the time of this writing, don’t have radio tuners and computers can process analogue signals) writing the mark scheme in this way is thoughtless, as teachers can only give marks that exactly match its language. So does the pupil get the mark if they mention any other mp3 player? Technically, no. Wikipedia currently lists 63 different players. Is it safe to assume that the examiner will be familiar with all of them? Doubtful.

If the question is not poorly worded, or not covered in the specification, it will be insultingly easy. The first question on a sample paper started:

A newspaper article has the heading: ‘Are mobiles putting our children at risk?’ A recent report said that children under the age of nine should not use mobile phones…

The first question on the paper was:

Below which age is it recommended that children use a mobile phone in emergencies only?

This is the kind of reading comprehension question I would expect in a primary school English lesson, not a secondary school GCSE.

The Political:
The number of questions that relate to global warming is appalling. I do not deny that pupils should know about the topic, nor do I deny its importance. However, it should not be the main focus of every topic. The pupils (and their teachers) are growing apathetic from overexposure.

A paper question asked: `Why must we develop renewable energy sources?’ This is a political question. Worse yet, a political statement. I’m not saying I disagree with it, just that it has no place on a physics GCSE paper.

Pupils are taught to poke holes in scientific experiments, to constantly find what is wrong. However, never are the pupils given ways to determine when an experiment is reliable, to know when an experiment yields information about the world that we can trust. This encourages the belief that all quantitative data is unreliable and untrustworthy. Some of my pupils, after a year of the course, have gone from scientifically minded individuals to thinking, “It’s not possible to know anything, so why bother?” Combining distrust of scientific evidence with debates won on style and presentation alone is an unnerving trend that will lead society astray.

The Non-scientific:
Lastly, I present the final question on the January physics exam in its entirety:

Electricity can also be generated using renewable energy sources. Look at this information from a newspaper report.

The energy from burning bio-fuels, such as woodchip and straw, can be used to generate electricity.
Plants for bio-fuels use up carbon dioxide as they grow.
Farmers get grants to grow plants for bio-fuels.
Electricity generated from bio-fuels can be sold at a higher price than electricity generated from burning fossil fuels.
Growing plants for bio-fuels offers new opportunities for rural communities.
Suggest why, apart from the declining reserves of fossil fuels, power companies should use more bio-fuels and less fossil fuels to generate electricity.

The only marks that a pupil can get are for saying:

Overall add no carbon dioxide to the environment
Power companies make more profit
Opportunity to grew new type of crop (growing plants in swamps)
More Jobs
None of this material is in the specification, nor can a pupil reliably deduce the answers from the given information. Physics isn’t a pedestrian subject about power companies and increasing their profits, or jobs in a rural community, it’s is about far grander and broader ideas.

Conclusion:
My pupils complained that the exam did not test the material they were given to study, and they are largely correct. The information tested was not in the specification given to the teachers, nor in the approved resources suggested by the AQA board. When I asked AQA about the issues with their exam they told me to write a letter of complaint, and this I have done. But, rather than mail it to AQA to sit ignored on a desk, I am making it public in the hope that more attention can be brought to this problem.

There is a teacher shortage in this country, but if a physicist asked my advice on becoming a teacher, I would have to say: don’t. Don’t unless you want to watch a subject you love dismantled.

I am a young and once-enthusiastic physics teacher. I despair at what I am forced to teach. I have potentially thirty years of lessons to give, but I didn’t sign up for this — and the business world still calls. There I won’t have to endure the pain of trying to animate a crippled subject. The rigors of physics have been torn down and replaced with impotent science media studies.

I beg of the government and the AQA board, please, give me back my subject and let me do my job.

Sincerely,

Wellington Grey"

Nanny Bans Wireless

Nanny Bans WirelessThe truly remarkable thing about Nanny and her followers is that they are happy to make decisions, and act, on "faith based analysis" totally devoid of any scientific study or verifiable evidence.

That's the beauty of knowing that you are right, you never have to check the validity of your decision making. At this stage I could make a snide comment about President Bush's and Prime Minister Blair's Iraq "policy", but that would be a tad off topic.

Anyhoo, it seems that Nanny's followers are getting themselves into a right "two and eight" (rhyming slang for "state") over wireless networks.

It seems that some parents and teachers (remember Nanny comes in many forms; "Nanny is a Nanny does") are forcing some schools to dismantle wireless computer networks.

Why?

Well these people, despite having no hard scientific evidence, are of the belief that wireless networks pose a danger to their precious childrens' health.

The fear is that the low levels of microwave radiation emitted by the transmitters could be harmful, causing loss of concentration, headaches, fatigue, memory and behavioural problems and possibly cancer in the long term.

Nanny's followers lobbied hard at Prebendal School, in Chichester West Sussex, and have persuaded the headteacher, Tim Cannell, to remove the wireless network in October.

Mr Cannell said:

"We listened to the parents' views

and they were obviously very concerned.

We also did a lot of research.

The authorities say it's safe,

but there have been no long-term studies to prove this
."

The key part being that there is no evidence to say that it is dangerous, yet they remove it anyway; a decision based purely on ignorance and fear.

Vivienne Baron, who is bringing up Sebastian, her 10 year old grandson, said:

"I did not want Sebastian exposed to a wireless computer network at school.

No real evidence has been produced

to prove that this new technology is safe in the long term.

Until it is, I think we should take a precautionary approach and use cabled systems
."

How does she know that cable technology is safe?

How does she know that pc's are safe in the long term?

They have only been with us for 20 years or so, damage caused by serious long term exposure to pc's might not be evident for another 20 years or more.

You see folks, what we think of as safe is based more often than not on our prejudices and fears, rather than hard reliable scientific fact.

At Ysgol Pantycelyn, a comprehensive in Carmarthenshire, parents put paid to the wireless network there too.

I would make the following observations; based on my own prejudices, fears and ignorance:
  • Were we to have had this fuss when fire was invented, we would still be eating raw meat and huddled together in animal skins. Fire is dangerous, it has a habit of burning things and killing people. Yet we have used it for thousands of years.

  • I wonder if Sebastian's granny, or the parents of all the other "Sebastians" allow their sprogs to use mobile phones?

I bet many of them do.

Aren't these meant to be slightly dubious as well? Don't these emit low level microwave radiation?

Do I smell the faint whiff of hypocrisy here?

  • Do these same parents of "Sebastians" have pc's, wireless networks, tv's etc at home?

    I bet many do?

Again, there is a whiff of hypocrisy in the air.
I wonder what the next panic will be about?

What do you think is dangerous and should be banned?

Remember folks, don't worry about using facts to justify your campaign or arguments; blind prejudice and ignorance is all we need in Nanny's Britain!
