Welsh Nanny To Ban Tea and Coffee for Under 16s

Under 16s in Wales could be banned from buying tea and coffee as part of options being considered by Welsh Nanny in an effort to make young people healthier and stop rising obesity rates.

There are concerns that the rising consumption of high-caffeine energy drinks is affecting students' educations. Now, the Welsh Government has confirmed that the consultation on the proposal to end sales of energy drinks to children also asks whether the plan "should be widened to consider other drinks typically high in caffeine such as tea and coffee".

I think Welsh Nanny needs to lie down in a dark room with a wet towel over her head!

More "Scientific" Bollocks - Hot Tea Causes Cancer

Here's why this is bollocks:

1 People don't drink very hot tea, they let it cool.

2 People (at least the Brits) add milk to tea.

Hot Drinks Cause Cancer - Probably!

The World Health Organisation (WHO), the organisation that spread aids in Africa via infected needles and that has mismanaged the Ebola and Zika outbreaks, has decreed that hot drinks "probably" cause cancer.

In other words they don't know!

Not withstanding the fact that WHO hasn't a clue, it has decreed that hot drinks should always be left for a few minutes to lower the temperature, or cooled down with milk to avoid disease.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the WHO, said very hot drinks of 65C and over double the risk of developing cancer of the oesophagus.

However, the panel found there was no evidence that coffee or tea causes cancer and said any link was because of the hot temperature of the drink. Ironically, a few years ago, IARC claimed that coffee did cause cancer!

Dr Christopher Wild, director of IARC, is quoted by the Telegraph:
"These results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of oesophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible."
Aside from the word "probable" destroying any facet of credibility of this so called "research", who the fark drinks liquids at 65 degrees plus?

That's too bloody hot, you would burn yourself!

The WHO should focus on sorting out the mess it has created wrt Zika and Ebola, instead of sticking its nose into peoples hot beverages!

Nanny Bans Coffee

I see that the health and safety gestapo have identified another "threat" to children. This time the "threat" comes in the form of tea and coffee served at "coffee mornings" hosted in childrens' centres.

Mill Hill Children's Centre, Waterlooville Hampshire, is the latest childrens' centre to fall under the jackboot of the health and safety brigade. Despite having served tea and coffee to adults, who take their kids there for some 7 years (for an entry fee of £1), hot drinks are now banned (ironically the £1 charge remains!).

The fact that people drink tea and coffee at home seems to have escaped Nanny, as does the fact that the risk of a kid having a cup of coffee dropped on him/her is considerably less than the risk of the kid being injured in a car crash whilst being driven to a "coffee morning".

Tea Time

Tea Time
Nanny's special little organ, Envirowise (funded by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) has got a bee in its bonnet about water being wasted.

A good point!

Gazillions of gallons of water are wasted each year in this country, because our water companies (eg Thames Water) are not upgrading leaking Victorian water mains with sufficient speed.

Therefore one would assume that Envirowise is calling upon the water companies to upgrade the system with due haste.

Ermmm....not quite!

Envirowise is calling on businesses to appoint tea monitors to make sure people do not waste water.

It wants companies to use teapots instead of making individual cups of tea, and hopes to re-introduce tea urns to the workplace.

It has issued an edict:

"Appoint a tea task force or tea monitor to make sure all your office hot drink-making facilities are as efficient as they could be. Only boil the water you use - this will avoid water and energy being wasted."

They add that employees should use a teapot when making a round of hot drinks as this "allows you to measure the correct amount of water you will need, and often tastes nicer than making tea in the cup".

I humbly submit that a greater saving of resources could be made if Envirowise were to be abolished.

Knobheads - Nanny Bans Eggs

Knobheads
I have been writing articles for this site since September 2004 and, on occasions, one can be a tad "sensitised" to the nonsense of Nanny and not react with the full vigour, righteous indignation and ire that this old witch should provoke.

However, fear not, in this particular case my indignation is righteous, my ire is inflamed and my dander is up.

So incensed am I about this, that I am forgoing my prestigious "Prats of The Week" award and presenting the miscreants with my "Knobheads of The Year" award.

What has caused such a response in my normally mild mannered persona?

I shall tell you.

EGGS!

Yes, that's right, EGGS!

Harmless enough, you would have thought?

A nice meal or snack; fried, boiled, poached, scrambled raw etc...it's all good.

Not if you are Nanny's chums in the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BACC). They have decided that eggs are evil, and have banned the advertising of them.

The story begins 50 years ago, when eggs were advertised by Tony Hancock with the slogan:

"Go to work on an egg".

The British Egg Information Service (BEIS) had planned to re-broadcast these adverts to mark the 50th anniversary, and to get us to eat more eggs.

No problemo!

That is until Nanny's knobheads in the BACC, which vets television advertisements before they are screened, stuck their gnarled old noses into to the yolk and said that the campaign breached current Ofcom rules on promoting a varied diet.

Kristoffer Hammer, a BACC spokesman, whined that the issue was not whether a daily egg with your breakfast would be harmful; only that it should be served with fruit juice or toast.

"We are not questioning the effect

it would have on your health.

Our role is to ensure that advertising

that goes on television is in compliance

with the [Communications] act.

It's quite clear from the act that they should

be presented as part of a balanced diet
."

What a bunch of knobheads!

As can be clearly seen in the adverts, Tony is eating the eggs with bacon, soldiers and tea. Why do we have to see juice and muesli as well?

Not everyone wants juice and muesli.

Also, do we not have other meals in the day?

The adverts are quite clearly not telling us to eat only eggs throughout the day for fark's sake!

The BEIS thinks this is a load of old bollocks:

"We have been shocked by this ruling,

as eggs are a healthy,

natural food which are recommended by nutritionists.

What's more, there are no restrictions

on the number of eggs people can eat,

which was recently confirmed by the Food Standards Agency,

and between five and seven eggs a week

would be totally acceptable for most people.

In addition, many other advertisers clearly

promote their products to be eaten every day,

such as breakfast cereals, so we are very surprised

that eggs have been singled out in this way
."

FACTOID: I can eat 4 eggs in one sitting when having my multi component fry up!

Fay Weldon, who created the slogan, thinks the ban is bollocks as well:

"When you think of what can be run

and what is being run, like low-cost airlines

and cars ... Cars kill,

eggs aren't actually likely to do so
."

As said, BACC well deserving the "Knobheads of The Year" award!

Take a trip down memory lane and watch Nanny's banned adverts here, careful that Nanny doesn't arrest you:

Trouble At Gestapo HQ

Trouble At Gestapo HQ
My sympathy to the good people of our much respected Health and Safety Gestapo. It seems that they are having a few health and safety issues at their own HQ.

According to data recently released to The Times, under the Freedom of Information Act, there were over 500 accidents and injuries in a 3½ year period at Gestapo HQ. That, by the way, works out at on accident every two working days.

There were 154 slips, trips or falls. One fall, that resulted in a strained groin...ouch...was caused by a wet tea-room floor...don't they use those dinky little plastic cones that warn of wetness?

Another employee slipped on a plastic bag and pulled a hamstring. One hapless member of staff slipped on a raisin!!!???

Someone else bruised her eye, when a lavatory-roll dispenser fell from the wall.

Inspectors were also physically or verbally assaulted nine times.

The accident rate at Gestapo HQ shows a rate of 4,143 per 100,000 people over 2005-06, compared with 2,143 per 100,000 across all companies in the process, plant and machine operatives sector, widely considered one of the most dangerous sectors.

An HSE spokesman said:

"We endeavour to be an exemplar

and as such HSE's level of reporting

is very high.

When compared against averages for

companies with our type of risk the

incident rates and rates for reportable

injuries are low
."

Other mishaps included:

-Tried to step over spill on floor but slipped in the process

-Walked into warning sign — laceration to skull and damage to spectacles

-Accidentally touched bulb while switching lamp off — small burn to thumb

-Jarred wrist and arm trying to open door, which was stiffer than usual

These are the people who impose rules on us, to "help" us avoid accidents!

Physician heal thyself.

Nanny's Segregated Swimming Pool III

Nanny's Segregated Swimming PoolWell lookey here folks, Croydon Council actually sent me their official press response to the media stories about their segregated swimming pool.

Rather a surprise, considering that they never respond to the issues that I raise in www.croydoniscrap.com. Then again, the swimming pool story was featured by several large media organs (can I say organ?), so they were rather forced to say something about it.

Anyhoo, at the end of this article you can read the full text of their press release. The Croydon Council spin doctors have made a good effort to spin the story around, and to try to present it as a storm in a tea cup. Rather a nice touch to use the title "Single Gender Swimming Lessons".

See, it's nothing to do with religion; it's a sex issue!

So that's alright then isn't?

Er...no it's not.

The trouble is, if you read it carefully, it doesn't quite stack up:
  • Is not the provision of single sex sessions, in a public facility (as opposed to a private members only club), discriminatory?

  • Why do women or men need to swim separately?

  • The title and tone of the media release would have you believe that this was merely a gender issue. However, if this is only a "gender thing", why do the sessions require a greater level of covering-up than would be the case during public opening hours?

  • Why, if this is only a "gender thing", are the "Single Gender Sessions" run in conjunction with Norbury Islamic Academy? (Scroll down to the bottom of this page from the pool's website).

  • Croydon Council would have you believe that the sessions (which have been going on for a year) are outside of the normal opening hours of the pool, and as such no member of the public is being inconvenienced by this. However, it seems that they are being a tad disingenuous when they say that it is outside of normal hours. It may now be outside of normal hours, but the opening hours of the pool have been shortened (see the pool's website updated December 2006).

Sarah Fellows, a pool regular is quoted as saying:

"I take my kids all the time

but I did notice they had introduced the men-only Muslim afternoon

a while back though they've now changed the times as well
    ."

In fact, if you go to an old version of the pool's website, you can see that the swimming pool was open on Sunday May 2006 up to 17:45, which was later than it is now. However, the male only sessions now start at 16:45. The pool opening times on Sunday have been shortened, thus it is perfectly "correct" for the council to say that the sessions are now outwith the normal hours.

  • Why, if this is a "gender only thing", do people need to adhere to a dress code.
Why does the council need to try to spin the story in this manner? The council, if it really believes in its policy of providing Muslims with separate sessions, should have the balls to say so. At least people would respect them for saying, and doing, what they believe.

This policy, and the spin reaction, helps no one. Contact details for Croydon Council are in the original article on this site.

Full Text of Press Release

Single Gender Swimming sessions at Thornton Heath pool

Croydon Council is monitoring attendances at its weekly, single gender swimming sessions that have been held at Thornton Heath pool throughout the last year. Attendances have averaged 250 each weekend. The sessions have been organised to help ensure that as many local people as possible are able to make use of the facilities. Those attending have also been able to use the fitness suite and sports hall.

Contrary to national press reports over the weekend, sessions are open to all faiths. The sessions for women are held on Saturday afternoon (6.45pm - 8.45pm) and the sessions for men are held on Sunday afternoons (4.45pm - 6.45pm). The dress code during these sessions requires a greater level of covering-up than would be the case during public opening hours.

Provision of the sessions is in line with the council's policy of ensuring leisure facilities in the borough are accessible to the whole community. They are particularly appreciated by members of the Muslim community as well as other local people who feel more comfortable attending single gender sessions.

Croydon is in no way unique in offering such sessions to minority communities outside public opening hours and they have operated with the consent and understanding of all pool users since their introduction in November 2005.

Softly Softly Task Force

Softly Softly Task ForceFollowing on from yesterday's post, about Nanny's confusing approach to the current terrorist threat, it seems that Nanny has further softened her previously "stern" approach to the threat by issuing a very strange directive indeed to her police officers in Bedfordshire.

Nanny has issued an 18 point guide to officers to use when they raid Muslim homes suspected of drugs or terrorist offences.

It states:

"The Muslim community feels victimised and suspicious of counter terrorist police operations and in the current climate a search at a British Muslim household has the potential to become a critical incident and come under intense scrutiny".

It then lists 18 points that police officers should note.

These include:
  • Rapid entry needs to be the last resort and raids into Muslim houses are discouraged for a number of religious dignity reasons.

  • Police should seek to avoid looking at unclad Muslim women and allow them an opportunity to dress and cover their heads.

  • For reasons of dignity officers should seek to avoid entering occupied bedrooms and bathrooms even before dawn.

  • Use of police dogs will be considered serious desecration of the premises and may necessitate extensive cleaning of the house and disposal of household items.

  • Advice should be sought before considering the use of cameras and camcorders due to the risk of capturing individuals, especially women, in inappropriate dress.

  • Muslim prisoners should be allowed to take additional clothing to the station.

  • If people are praying at home officers should stand aside and not disrupt the prayer. They should be allowed the opportunity to finish.

  • Officers should not take shoes into the houses, especially in areas that might be kept pure for prayer purposes.

  • In the current climate the justification for pre-dawn raids on Muslim houses needs to be clear and transparent.

  • Non-Muslims are not allowed to touch holy books, Qurans or religious artefacts without permission. Where possible, Muslim officers in a state of 'Wudhu' (preparation before prayer) should be used for this purpose.

Whilst the above advice may be highly appropriate for an army of occupation, conducting a mass house to house search in a foreign country, it is not good practice for a domestic police force conducting a targeted raid on a house or property that the police have good reason and evidence to raid.

The "softly softly" approach puts the lives of the officers at risk, and significantly diminishes the chances of the success of the operation.

I would also venture to suggest that instead of "calming tensions" between the various communities, it will heighten them; as non Muslims, rightly or wrongly, perceive that Muslims are being given "special treatment".

I would note that I am not alone in feeling this way; the Chairman of Luton Council of Faiths, Zafar Khan, welcomed the guidelines but said the police should deal with all faiths sensitively.

He said:

"Guidelines on how to deal and interact with the community in all faiths should be welcomed.

It's a question of being sensitive and informed and if that makes the policing more effective and more sensitive that has to be a good thing
."

Abdul Malik, chairman of Luton Race Advisory Forum, said:

"The police need to be sensitive when they are going into the homes of everybody - not just Muslims."

In other words, don't treat certain areas of the community as a "special case". In the eyes of the law, we should all be treated equally.

By the way, my family has had some experience of police raids themselves.

My grandmother came to London in the 1930's, from Ireland. At that time there was a bombing campaign and threat from the IRA, as such some elements of the Irish population were regarded with suspicion by their neighbours.

One day Grandmother heard a knock at the door and, on opening it, found herself facing a group of officers from Special Branch.

Seemingly a neighbour had decided that since Grandmother was Irish she was a potential terrorist, and therefore had tipped off Special Branch.

Anyhoo, the officers duly searched her home and of course found nothing. My Grandmother was totally unfazed by this and, once they had finished their search, offered the officers a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

She wasn't upset or angry about this, and was not bothered again by searches; she happily continued to live in London until the mid eighties, when she died.

Anti Binge Drinking Policy is Bollocks - It's Official!

Anti Binge Drinking Policy is Bollocks - It's Official!Full marks and indeed my admiration to Louise Casey, Nanny's senior adviser on anti-social behaviour and head of the Home Office anti-social behaviour unit (an Orwellian sounding body if ever there was one).

She seemingly "said it how it is" last month, whilst delivering an after dinner speech to chief constables and senior civil servants.

During her barnstorming performance Casey joked about working while drunk, and said anti-binge drinking messages were "nonsense". She also poked fun at Home Secretary Charles "Fungus" Clarke during this splendid speech.

Speaking in Stratford-upon-Avon, Ms Casey told her audience:

"I suppose you can't binge drink anymore because lots of people have said you can't do it. I don't know who bloody made that up, it's nonsense."

She added that some ministers might perform better if they "turn up in the morning pissed".

Hear! Hear!

In Casey's view, "Doing things sober is no way to get things done,"; can't argue with that can you?

She is after all in charge of managing ASBO's.

Then, in a career enhancing move, she lambasted Downing Street; which she said was "obsessed" with conducting extensive research before formulating policies.

She joked that she would "deck" Downing Street policy advisers if they kept spouting jargon at her.

She said the tea lady was more powerful than ministers.

A Home Office spokesman said Ms Casey was achieving a great deal in leading the campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Quite so!

It seems to me that Ms Casey's remarks were right on the nail, full credit to her for having the guts to defy her Mistress (Nanny that is).

Unfortunately for Casey, Nanny does not allow freedom of thought, expression or argument; she will doubtless find herself sacked after this.

She is very welcome to appear on this site, as a guest contributor.

The Dangers of Tea

The Dangers of TeaHere is rather an old story, that I have only just come across, it well illustrates the daftness of Nanny and her acolytes.

Seemingly in May last year, council bosses in Birmingham banned wardens who care for the elderly from making tea for the elderly.

The reason?

Health and safety issues!

Nanny Breaks The Law

Nanny breaks the lawDear old Nanny just loves to introduce new laws. She feels that by introducing swathes of new laws she will look busy, and important.

Her latest legal “initiative” is the introduction of on the spot fines for litter, drinking, shop lifting, “looking at me in a funny manner” and a whole host of practices that Nanny finds to be annoying.

As from 1 November 2004 police can issue £80 fixed penalty notices to anyone caught drinking underage, buying alcohol for a minor, shoplifting for the first time or causing minor criminal damage. People dropping litter will face £50 penalty notices.

Nanny’s helpful little Home Office sprite, Hazel Blears said:

"Vandalising property, fouling streets with litter, blind drunk teenagers causing trouble or stealing for a buzz – this is anti-social, criminal behaviour and a scourge on society...People committing these offences will no longer be let off with a verbal warning. From today, they will face immediate punishment and court action if they refuse to pay.

These fines will make people think twice and will increase the number of low level offenders we can bring to justice..We know that fixed penalty notices make big savings in police time, freeing them up to patrol the streets, they enable the courts to concentrate on more serious offences and give offenders an immediate punishment.

They are supported by police and a key part of the Government’s campaign to deliver a culture change of tackling, not tolerating low level nuisance and disorder
.."

As you can see, Nanny is happy to use the phrase “not tolerate”; in other words she now openly admits to being intolerant.

Fair enough you might say, drunken louts are nobody’s “cup of tea”.

However, Nanny has plans to extend the powers to issue on the spot fines to not just those in the police but to other groups of people as well.

Parish and town council wardens are also to be given the power to issue on the spot fines of up to £100 for dog-fouling, littering and graffiti; in a major extension of Nanny’s crusade against what she perceives to be antisocial behaviour.

Nanny’s special friend, David “trial without jury” Blunkett, announced that the new powers on fixed penalty notices will be aimed at 10,000 parish and town councils.

The councils will be able to impose fines of between £30 and £100 for a range of offences, that Nanny believes to be antisocial; including dog-fouling, littering, vandalism, making excessive night-time noise, fly-posting and throwing fireworks.

These fines will be issued by wardens, rangers and crime and safety officers from the parish/town councils. The new powers will be set out in an Act of Parliament which will be included in next month's Queen's Speech.

These on the spot fines raise rather an interesting legal point; something which Nanny, with all her lawyers in the Cabinet and social circle, should have known about.

The Bill of RightsThere is something called the Bill of Rights Act, which was passed in 1689, it states that:

"That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void".

In other words, on the spot fines are illegal until due legal process has been completed. This means that the recipient of an on the spot fine has the right to a trial.

Needless to say if everyone who received an on the spot fine refused to pay, and opted for a trial, the cost would be prohibitive; and the legal system in this country would grind to a halt.

In fact the Bill of Rights “throws a spanner” in many of the “legal” practices used in Britain today; such as the issuing of speeding tickets or congestion fines.

In the 'Metric Martyrs' judgment, Lord Justice Laws said:

"We should recognise a hierarchy of Acts of Parliament: as it were "ordinary" statutes and "constitutional statutes". The special status of constitutional statutes follows the special status of constitutional rights. Examples are the Magna Carta, Bill of Rights 1689, The Act of Union...Ordinary statutes may be impliedly repealed. Constitutional statutes may not..."

This means that all of Nanny’s lackeys; be they Local Authorities, Government agencies or police forces who fine people through the post, or on the spot are acting illegally.

As usual Nanny has demonstrated that:
  • She does not think through the consequences of her actions

  • She is intellectually lazy

  • She is contemptuous of the law and intolerant of the behaviour of others.
Her prime objective is to tie us down with petty rules and regulations, that have no basis in law, and to use self appointed lackeys to administer her new "legal" system.
