The Dangers of Ham

HamI see that another food has been targeted by the food police for banning.

This time the target is ham and other processed meat.

The World Cancer Research Fund has decreed that parents must stop putting such products in their childrens' lunchboxes, lest they develop a taste for smoked, salted or cured meats.

Seemingly, if you believe the doctors, eating too much ham etc over decades can raise the risk of bowel cancer.

All very well, but would they care to define exactly what "too much" actually means?

They won't, because they don't know.

Instead they are using data collected from adult health surveys (because there is no data on children) to issue a blanket "scare the parents" health warning.

Another small question, what exactly is the "risk" of getting cancer if you eat one slice of ham; eg 10%, 20%??

Issuing health alerts without providing the relevant data (such as statistical risk of getting cancer from eating one slice of ham a day) is of no use to man nor beast.

As ever, instead of scaring people by saying "don't", why not remind people of the old adage "a little of what you fancy, in moderation" does you no harm whatsoever (ie eat a varied diet)?

Feeling hungry?

Here is my recipe for Baked Ham.

  1. Surely you know Nanny is only trying to force us to be Vegitarians? I've been suspecting this for years.

Nanny always seems to find someway to attribute ill health to Red Meat, Alcohol or Smoking and one way or another will get her way.

  3. Sometimes, well actually always, I feel that these agencies/quangos etc feel the need to come up with something, well anything, just to sort of justify their existence.
It is the same as any government type review; They never report back that things are actually fine and what people have been doing for donkey's years is best practice.

If you follow the idea of "everything in moderation" you will be fine.

Funny how the Fear Industry never alerts us to the real risks of cancer posed by environmental pollution? Don't eat ham because it may (amongst other things) possibly contribute to future bowel cancer. But carry on breathing air fouled by car exhaust which does pose a know risk of developing lung cancer. However powerful vested interests do very well out of motoring so let's just slag off ham instead.

Why stop at ham? Cooking food produces chemical such as heterocyclic amines which are known carcinogens. So let's eat all our food raw, then we can go back to dying as a result of disgusting intestinal parasite infestations.

  5. I noticed that yesterday, there was a report which stated moderate consumption of alcohol improves bone density in females, the state broadcaster Al-JaBeeba, moved quickly to kill off the story and repeated the official state line that more than two units a day will cause serious harm to health.

I hope that when there is a change of government that Al-JaBeeba in brought back into line and that their charter is enforced, especially the section that states they should be politically neutral.

Stats and real information are no longer necessary. The general population have become so weak that you can spout any old tripe to get them twirling in a tiswas. They dont care about proof as long as someone in authority has said it.

It aint food that makes me ill, its the apathy of the general puplic.

Hmmm.. that picture looks remarkably like an armadillo, which is surely free of all carcinogens?

Henry Allingham - Britain's oldest man until his recent death, attributed his longevity to "cigarettes, whisky and wild, wild women".
I dare say he ate the odd piece of ham during his 113 years....

The statistics are clearly exposed here http://understandinguncertainty.org/node/233 where there is lots of good information on de-spinning statistics.

I suppose gay sex is OK but eating the odd bit of cooked ham is not OK, sucking the pork sausage is OK the odd bit of roast pork a big no, no! Bowel cancer and AIDS is OK from acceptable gay fun and games?

Aren't you about twenty to thirty years out of date? If you're too ugly/up-tight/smelly to get any sex the sociable way you could always try paying for it, I believe that one of the main railway stations in London has facilities out back.

Interesting that this should come up at a time when pigs have a bad press from swine flu.

One cannot but help make a link from ham to full English breakfast with bacon (even Danish bacon) and then wonder about religious sensitivities w/r to pigs and eating them.

Might that be where the anti-ham analysis started out? Or is this just some sort of data dredge that was ever likely to produce something statistically fudgeable in the middle of the summer quiet new period?

Perhaps also a distraction from the 'Tamiflu more dangerous than swine flu' stories as well?

I seem to have scratched something bad there to receive such a explosion of pus.
I was only wondering why the concern about bowel cancer was focused on a variety of cooked meat.
My friend is surely of the true faith in all things gay are divine, may I remind you that although my thoughts are twenty or thirty years out of date that doesn't make them any less true.

Alright, Troll, I will bite just this once. You may " remind " me of nothing except the nineteen-eighties! Back on your knees, your Big Sky Fairy is missing your prayers. Once you've genuflected enough to feel suitably superior you may want to have a look at the HIV infection rates and the incidence of AIDS subsequent to that in, for example, Africa, a wee continent with a little bit of a heterosexual transmission problem.

The only "bad" thing you seem to have scratched is possibly a laptop key or two: "...sucking the pork sausage is OK..."? Really ? Really!

End of "bite". Feed yourself, preferably on pork, from now on please, dear Sir or Madam.

  14. Call me sexist, call me chauvanist, call me what you like, I can guarantee 100% on pure unadulterated feminine intuition, (even though I am a horny heterosexual male), that the source of ALL these ridiculous scares are WIMMIN

It might be born in mind that the government would have a vested interest in shortening the life span - to do away with pensioners etc.
