Nanny Hates Fags - Blackpool Bans Smoking

As loyal readers know, Nanny really hates smoking.

This is of course rather odd, given that she derives a rather large amount of revenue from the duties imposed on fags and the taxes raised on the profits of the fag companies and the shops and supermarkets that sell them.

Anyhoo, despite the fact that we are in a major recession and (according to the media) the NHS is falling apart, Nanny's NHS in Blackpool has decided to spend some money erecting (there's that pre watershed word again folks!) signs in and around various parks and playing fields in the Blackpool area designating them "smoke free zones".

LOL:)

What a farking waste of money!

According to an article in last month's Blackpool Gazette, signs are already being installed in council-owned playgrounds, and now town hall chiefs are seeking to extend the policy to parks in full.

For why?

Some dodgy "research" has Nanny believing that second hand smoke in a public open space poses a serious health risk to.....yes, you've guessed it.....children!

WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

How I loath that expression.

Now further bans are planned for Anchorsholme, GeorgeBancroft, Boundary, Claremont, Crossland Road, East Pines, Highfield Road, Kingscote, and Watson Road parks; Central Drive Recreation Ground, Fishers Field, Gynn Square and Whiteholme playing fields.

The park signs will be inscribed with the message:
“To protect children this is a designated smokefree site.”
The initiative is part of the “Altogether Now – a Legacy for Blackpool” health promotion campaign, which is a partnership between Blackpool Council, NHS Blackpool and Blackpool Football Club.

Pass the sick bag someone.

Coun Ivan Taylor, chairman of Blackpool’s Health and Wellbeing Board, said:
“The idea is to protect the children who are on the playgrounds.

I don’t think it is reasonable for children who are playing to be suffering from inhaling smoke and to being influenced by seeing adults also smoking.

We’ll have to wait and see what the reaction is but I think most people would welcome the reason for it.

Smoking is a killer and we need to do all we can to discourage it.”
What a load of nauseating crap!

How about using the money to improve the quality of the parks by removing the drunks, addicts and other assorted scumbags who pose a far greater danger to the people who use them?

Has this guy never walked down Blackpool's Golden Mile, at around midnight on a Friday, where he can see some real "health issues" that need more urgent attention?

This is money being wasted on a non existent issue!

The Booze Police

Booze Matters
Did you know my loyal readers that this is "alcohol awareness week"?

No, I didn't know that either, until I by chance came across this wee note (see below) in the Times yesterday.

Speaking personally I don't need any of Nanny's minions to remind me about alcohol, but it is very kind of them to do so!

Regarding the note written by the venerable doctors, I would make a few of observations:

1 They are seriously out of touch, regarding dictating prices that would lead to a £1.50 pint; when was a pint last £1.50?

2 Normal people do not drink gallons of ultra cheap cider. To punish the normal population for the actions of a desperate, sad minority is simply not right.

3 Physician heal thyself: "Although the physical health of doctors compares favourably with that of the general population, they have an increased prevalence of alcohol and drug problems and a higher suicide rate.

Data from the U.S.A. indicate that approximately 10% of physicians become dependent on psychoactive drugs or alcohol at some time during their careers. Dynamic influences in their upbringing, pressure of work and ready access to drugs may all predispose to drug or alcohol misuse.
"

Source Alcohol and drug use and related problems in the medical profession

I also noted in another media organ that there is a "growing campaign for minimum alcohol prices"...errrmmm...no there isn't! This is merely a media invention to give the media something to write about.

Anyhoo, in order to celebrate "alcohol awareness week" I will be consuming a veritable smorgasbord of alcohol, I recommend that you do the same (feel free to buy some using the excellent links on this site).

Sherry enemas all round!

Here is the letter from the doctors, as per The Times:

"Sir,

As Directors of Public Health in the North West, we believe that the time has come for effective action to stop the irresponsible sale of cut-price alcohol by the off-trade. We welcome the Government's recent proposals to introduce a mandatory code for alcohol retailers and believe that this should be implemented at the earliest opportunity to address increased alcohol consumption and health harm in the UK. However, we also urge the Government to take further decisive action by bringing forward legislation to introduce a minimum price per unit for alcohol of 50p per unit.

None of us comes to this policy solution easily. However, despite considerable investment in the NHS and public health messages, a new Licensing Act and efforts by the industry itself, HMRC figures show that the overall consumption of alcohol continues to rise, as measured by volume of alcohol sold. Hospital admissions due to alcohol harm have risen by 64 per cent in the North West in the past five years. Apart from the implications for public health of this situation, we believe that the cost to the NHS in the North West of £400 million per year is simply unsustainable.

Of course, personal responsibility must continue to be part of our collective focus in tackling alcohol consumption, but it is naive for any of us to think it can be the sole focus. Alcohol is sufficiently price elastic for the aggressive price-cutting we have seen in recent years to affect individual consumption. It follows, as Sheffield University has shown, that raising the price of the cheapest alcohol sold would affect overall consumption and would target effectively the consumption of those that drink above moderate levels.

We know that the Government has argued that it does not wish to penalise moderate drinkers. Neither do we. A unit price of 50p means £1.50 for a pint in the pub or £4.50 for a bottle of wine in the supermarket. Is this really too much to pay to save 3,393 lives per year, to cut crimes by 45,800 and save the country £1 billion every year in alcohol-related costs?

We urge the Government to act quickly and decisively. The political leadership that was shown on smoking in public places needs to be shown on alcohol too. As with smoking, the politicians that take a lead in combating alcohol harm may find that they command the public’s respect and support as a result.

Prats of The Week - Bin Brother Again!

Prats of The Week - Bin Brother Again!Ooh...I feel a Prats of The Week Award coming upon me!

This week it goes to the binmen of Blackpool and Darwen Council.

Binmen and councils again!

Yes folks, it seems that the binmen and council of Darwen have a wee problem with teabags. They have refused to empty Donald MacKenzie's (a disabled pensioner) bin, because it was 'contaminated' by a stray teabag.

Mr MacKenzie found his wheelie-bin unemptied with a note saying 'food waste - t-bag'.

I am very impressed that the binmen have the time and energy to look through someone's bin with such thoroughness.

Mr MacKenzie complained to Darwen Council, but was told he should not have left out food.

The council's Peter Hunt (rhymes with....) said:

"Food waste can cause contamination that results in whole truckloads of recyclables having to go to landfill, so we do have to be careful."

Why do we pay council tax?

Why do we have local councils?

The binmen and council of Darwen, well deserving Prats of The Week.

Big Brother

Big Brother
Did you have a nice Christmas and New Year?

Did you go down the pub, and sink a few?

Maybe you are thinking of popping down to the boozer tonight, for a quick one?

Well, have a care!

It seems that Nanny is sending her spies into the ordinary local, in order to keep an eye on how much we are drinking.

In Blackpool recently, Nanny's police piloted a scheme whereby undercover officers spied on patrons and bar staff.

The spying was not just for information gathering purposes re drinking habits etc, which would be bad enough, but in order to issue fines.

It seems that two bar staff were fined for serving drunk customers.

Please note that this is a pilot scheme, this means that it will be rolled out to a boozer near you in the near future.

So, the question is, what constitutes "drunk" in Nanny's eyes?

-Falling flat on your face?

-Walking in a wobbly line?

-Speaking loudly about how you hate the state?

-Would Nanny care to provide us with a definition of "drunk"?

Nice to see that the police in Blackpool have nothing better to do!

Nanny's Donkey Inspectors

Nanny's Donkey Inspectors
My thanks to one of this site's regular visitors who advised me of the following piece of Nanny nonsense that happened in Fylde, on the eight mile stretch of beach between Blackpool and Lytham St Annes, over this summer.

It seems that Nanny's chums in Fylde borough council are "investing", I of course mean wasting, £18K of taxpayers' money on health and safety "experts" who will check the safety of donkey rides and other seaside pleasures.

Nanny has set them the onerous and "worthwhile" task of looking into the risks associated with the above activities, as well as doing a thorough health and safety check on such dangerous activities as:

- tossing a Frisbee
- practising golf swings
- collecting and sawing up driftwood

Seemingly the council have said that every aspect of beach activity would be examined and assessed.

If necessary, guidelines would be issued to allow them to be enjoyed in a safe manner.

Utter bollocks!

As ever, Nanny is wasting our money on pointless pursuits.

Nanny Bans St George

Nanny Bans St George
Following on from yesterday's article about Nanny banning a two year old from wearing an England T shirt, it seems that Nanny has gone into overdrive this summer in regard of her hatred of St George and his flag.

Throughout the land, Nanny's trolls have been working hard to eliminate the flag of St George.

Why is that?

Many reasons have been cited:
  • Nanny's dislike of the English

  • Nanny's dislike of patriotism

  • Nanny's fear of extremist Muslims, eg Anjem Choudary, a former leader of the Islamic extremist group Al-Muhajiroun, has claimed:

"The cross does represent Christianity and for Muslims it also represents a crusader history of occupation and murder."
Anyhoo, whatever her reason, Nanny is busy banning St George:
  • Cable company NTL have ordered their van drivers and subcontractors to remove their flags in case they offend Muslims.

    Quote:

"We work in many multicultural areas and in different countries within Britain so we want to maintain a professional image and a sense of impartiality."

    Twats!

We live and work in Britain, therefore we are perfectly entitled to wave our own country's flag.

  • Bosses at Heathrow's Terminal 5 have banned construction workers from flying the flag, health and safety issues there!

  • Taxi drivers in Blackpool are banned from flag flying and from wearing England T shirts, lest they upset foreign visitors.

  • Taxi drivers in Cheltenham are banned from flag flying, seemingly the council believe that they will fall off and cause an accident. The police want to ban all motorists from flag flying, lest they frighten the horses (yes that really is what they said!).

  • Fireman in Barking cannot fly the flag at their station, even though the local Mosque has said it is fine with them.
Nanny is totally overeacting to this harmless practice, she should devote her time to more important issues.

Nanny Bans Mr Whippy

Nanny Bans Mr WhippyNanny has something of a horror of seeing children, or indeed adults, enjoy themselves. Frivolity, in her world, is a waste of time and energy and should be stamped out.

Needless to say, the sound of Greensleeves and the sight of a brightly coloured van selling ice cream is regarded by Nanny as being just toooo frivolous. Therefore she has decided that Mr Whippy, and his chums, should be banned from selling their highly dangerous and evil ice cream near schools.

Mr Whippy and his chums have been playing Greensleeves and selling ice cream to generations of British kids, and their parents, for the past 60 years. Now Nanny's chums in the health lobby have decided that ice-cream vans are a danger to children's health.

An amendment to the Education and Inspection Bill will be put forward this week. In the amendment, local authorities will be given new powers to stop ice-cream vans from operating near school gates.

This miserable bastard move comes on top of regulations being imposed by local authorities that ban ice-cream vans from using pay-and-display parking spaces, and rules that set up "ice-cream-free" exclusion zones around busy shopping streets.

Nanny's chums in Newham council informed Mr Whippy and his mates last month that it would fine van owners up to £80 if they used pay-and-display bays. Greenwich council has banned the vans from its streets altogether.

Miserable, sad, pathetic, jobsworth, bastards!

West Dunbartonshire council has introduced an exclusion zone around schools for vans.

As one dietitian said, all this daft ban will do is push the children into buying less healthy food and sweets at their local store.

Catherine Collins, the chief dietitian at St George's Hospital, Tooting said:

"This is the kind of blanket ban that gives the health lobby a bad name.

A healthy diet can factor in a sugary treat such as an ice-cream.

It is the frequency of that treat that is an issue.

Most choices from an ice-cream van would provide fewer calories and fat compared to a free choice from a newsagent
."

Nanny is having none of that. Chris Waterman, the executive director of the Confederation of Education and Children's Services Managers (eh?), said:

"There are millions going into healthy food in schools, yet kids are rushing to spend their money on food from mobile vans

(Editor's note: it's called the free market matey!)

The ice-cream van industry may be saying it is in meltdown but for the sake of our children's health and safety we should keep the icons at Bournemouth and Blackpool but stop them driving around schools."

Twat!

As ever Nanny fails to make the distinction between a once in a while treat, and a daily overindulgence. If you are stupid enough to eat tons of ice cream every day then you will make yourself ill, but then that's your choice surely?

For the record a large single ice cream cone contains about 139 calories. A chocolate Flake adds about 100 calories.

A Mars Bar contains nearly 300 calories.

Will Nanny be banning those as well?

The next step that Nanny will be taking is to regulate and monitor what children eat outside the school gates, ie she will be insisting on regulating what they (and their parents) eat at home.

Are you happy with letting her do that?
