Nanny’s Ludicrous Proposal to Fine Supermarkets Over Shopping Basket Calories

In a move that could only be described as a masterclass in bureaucratic overreach, the government has floated a proposal to fine supermarkets for failing to reduce the calorie content of customers’ shopping baskets. Yes, you read that correctly—supermarkets, not individuals, would be penalised for the choices shoppers make. This harebrained scheme is not only impractical but also a textbook example of government meddling in personal freedom, dressed up as public health policy. Let’s unpack why this idea is as unworkable as it is infuriating.

First, let’s address the sheer impossibility of enforcement. Supermarkets sell thousands of products, from fresh produce to processed snacks, and customers buy whatever suits their needs, preferences, or budgets. How exactly is a supermarket supposed to control the calorie content of a shopper’s basket? Are cashiers expected to scan each item, tally up the calories, and then—what?—politely ask customers to swap their ice cream for kale? The logistics are a nightmare. A single shopping trip could include a mix of high-calorie treats, low-calorie vegetables, and everything in between, varying wildly from one customer to the next. Short of installing calorie police at every checkout or forcing shoppers to submit their receipts for a nutritional audit, there’s no feasible way to monitor or enforce this policy without turning supermarkets into dystopian surveillance hubs.

Then there’s the question of responsibility. Supermarkets don’t force anyone to buy anything. They stock shelves; customers make choices. Holding retailers accountable for individual decisions is like fining a car dealership because someone drove recklessly. People buy food based on taste, cost, dietary needs, or cultural preferences—not because Tesco or Sainsbury’s whispered sweet nothings about chocolate cake. Punishing supermarkets for offering variety ignores the fundamental reality that personal responsibility drives purchasing decisions. If the government wants to tackle obesity, it should focus on education or subsidies for healthier options, not scapegoating retailers for stocking what people demand.

The economic fallout of this proposal would also be disastrous. Supermarkets operate on razor-thin margins, and fines for something as nebulous as “calorie reduction” would likely force them to raise prices or cut costs elsewhere. Smaller chains or independent grocers, already struggling against retail giants, could be driven out of business entirely. And who pays the price? Consumers, of course—especially low-income households who rely on affordable food options. Forcing supermarkets to police calories could also lead to reduced stock of popular items, limiting choice and driving shoppers to less regulated markets like corner shops or online platforms. The ripple effect would be a mess, with no guarantee of healthier outcomes.

Let’s not ignore the absurdity of the government’s underlying assumption: that supermarkets can magically engineer a nation of healthier eaters. Even if retailers slashed the availability of high-calorie foods, people would still find ways to satisfy their cravings—whether through takeaways, black-market biscuits, or home baking. The idea that fining supermarkets will somehow transform the public’s eating habits is laughably detached from reality. It’s like trying to fix a broken bridge by ticketing the cars crossing it.

This proposal also reeks of authoritarian overreach. The government’s job is to provide infrastructure and guidance, not to micromanage what goes into our shopping trolleys. By shifting the burden onto supermarkets, they’re effectively admitting they don’t trust citizens to make their own choices. It’s a slippery slope—today it’s calories, tomorrow it’s sugar, salt, or maybe even “unapproved” food combinations. Where does it end? A state-mandated meal plan for every household? The nanny state has never looked so intrusive.

In short, this calorie-fining fiasco is a policy so divorced from practicality it could only have been dreamed up in a Whitehall bubble. It’s unenforceable without draconian measures, economically reckless, and an affront to personal freedom. If the government wants to promote healthier lifestyles, it should ditch the fines and focus on empowering people, not punishing businesses for doing their job. Supermarkets aren’t the problem—bad policy is.

Irony Klaxon - Bags For Life Increase Plastic Usage

Oh dear, it seems that whilst sales of "bags for life" rose to 1.5bn last year the amount of plastic used by supermarkets also increased to 900,000 tonnes.

It seems that people regard "for life" as meaning disposable.

Nanny Bans Sweets at Checkouts

Nanny is to unveil a sweeping ban on shops offering unhealthy snacks and sweets at checkouts in a bid to clamp down on soaring obesity rates and poor dental health.

The Mail on Sunday understands that health officials plan to roll out the restriction in the coming weeks despite most major supermarkets already removing products voluntarily.

The move is part of Nanny’s plan to halve childhood obesity in England by 2030.

However, most major supermarkets such as Tesco and Waitrose have already banned sweets and chocolate from being stocked near tills. Therefore I would have to question what is the point of legislating after the horse has voluntarily gone into the stable?

I would also note that moving sweets from one end of the shop to another will not make the slightest difference to the levels of obesity (real or imagined) in Britain!

Millennials Too Scared To Touch Meat

It has come to this, millennials are now so scared of touching meat that Sainsbury's has decided to pack chicken in a pack to pan package so that people don't have to touch the meat.

It said that many shoppers under the age of 35 were afraid to touch raw meat. The pouches known as “doypacks” in the industry are designed to allow consumers to cook meat without coming directly into contact with it.

Katherine Hall, product development manager for meat, fish and poultry at the retailer, told The Sunday Times:
"Customers, particularly younger ones, are quite scared of touching raw meat. These bags allow people, especially those who are time-poor, to just ‘rip and tip’ the meat straight into the frying pan without touching it”.
One small problem, the very same millennials are now complaining that the packages are not environmentally friendly!

When I was a kid, my dad was chums with a butcher and I would often visit his refrigerated room to look at the hanging carcasses of pigs and lambs. Something that maybe should be made mandatory for kids these days, so that they understand where food comes from!

Bags For Life Become Bags For Death

In a hugely amusing piece of irony, Nanny has got her knickers in a twist over her environmentally friendly bags for life.

It seems that reusable “bags for life” can spread deadly food poisoning bacteria if they are used to carry raw foods such as fish and meat.

Nanny's Food Standards Agency (FSA) is recommending that shoppers use separate bags to carry raw foods, ready-to eat foods and non-food items such as household cleaners and washing powder.

Aha!

That will give the supermarkets a nice little earner!

Nanny Bans Booze Purchase - "Dissatisfactory" Tesco!

Nanny has again managed to muddle herself up over her age limits on booze buying.

Nanny's chums from Tesco in Saxmunham decided to ban Angela Saunders (48) from buying some lager.

For why?

Ms Saunders was with her 15 year old daughter.

Ms Saunders is quoted by the Telegraph:
"I'm still in shock. It's completely bonkers. I'm a very loyal customer, but after this I'll never go back.

I felt so humiliated and embarrassed it made me look like I was trying to buy alcohol for my daughter."
Tesco has since apologised and admitted the employee acted incorrectly.

A spokeswoman said:
"We take our 'Think 25' alcohol policy very seriously. However, in this instance the colleague was incorrect in their judgement.

We are sincerely sorry for the dissatisfactory experience Ms Saunders had in store and for any offence caused."
In other words, now that it has become public we admit our mistake!

Oh, and by the way, "dissatisfactory"???

Double plus ungood Tesco!

Happy Plastic Bag Tax Day!

Today sees the imposition of Nanny's 5p (minimum - watch out for retailers trying to screw you) plastic bag tax in England.

Staff at major retailers will ask you to pay the charge at checkouts. At self-checkouts, you will be asked to declare how many bags you have used and the charge will be applied (make sure you lie).

The charge applies to “single-use” thin plastic bags – the technical specification is:
  • unused
  • plastic
  • has handles
  • 70 microns thick or less
It does not matter how big the bag is, so even small plastic bags you might be given when you buy your lunch are included.

The law does not actually specify how much the bags should cost, but retailers have been told to charge at least 5p.

If you are getting food delivered from a major supermarket, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Tesco will give you the option of a bagless delivery, or a flat rate of 40p. Morrisons and Ocado are charging 5p for each bag used, but will pay 5p for every bag returned.

The legislation applies to all types of shops, but only to retailers with more than 250 employees. However, watch out for your local shop trying to make extra money.

Where, oh where, does the money go?

Wherever the retailers wish!

Yes, that's right, wherever the retailers wish.

In other words they can keep it!

Nanny "expects" retailers to donate the money to worthy causes, and will be asking for reports on where the money goes.

Needless to say Nanny gets her share too.

How?

Via VAT, Nanny has predicted an income of £19m a year from the VAT charged on the bags.

Ker Farking Ching!

Aldi's Walk In The CoUNTry

Aldi's Gourmet Crackers

Oh dear, commiserations to Aldi for not looking at its labelling for its gourmet crackers closely enough.

Its new luxury brand of cheese biscuits were caught in a firestorm of social media protest, after it accidentally spelt the C-word.

The store's gourmet crackers, under its Specially Selected range, promises customers "deliciously thin and crispy crackers" in an "English country garden".

The graphic design choice highlighted the "C" word.

The packaging of the crackers has since been amended.

Tesco Bans Ribena

It seems that Tesco is so concerned about children's obesity, that it is taking steps to ban certain sugary drinks (eg Ribena and Carpi-sun...is that's some form of motor car from the 70's?) from its stores.

The sugary drinks aimed at children will be replaced by no-added-sugar alternatives.

Ironically the "non sugar" alternatives include crisps, which are in fact loaded with sugar.

There's irony for you!

As to whether this stems childhood obesity, I doubt it will have any effect whatsoever. Ribena et al can be bought elsewhere. Additionally, Ribena is not the prime cause of obesity.

Will Tesco be banning Coke?

No I thought not!

I drank Ribena as a kid (either with water or milk). I am not obese, I have all my own teeth and I am not diabetic. That being said, I didn't drink it everyday morning noon and night!

Prats of The Week - Tesco

My thanks to a loyal reader for nominating Tesco as Prats of The Week.

For why?

Just ask Tony Morris, who went to his local store in Carlton to but some nuts and bananas.

When he attempted to pay for them at the self service checkout he was asked to verify his age. The stupidity was further compounded, when a member of staff and a security guard came across and told him that it was in case he was going to ferment alcohol.

A Tesco spokeswoman is quoted by the Mirror denying that this is Tesco policy:
We don’t age restrict the sale of nuts - our store team have rechecked all the nuts in the store to ensure this is the case.

Giving customers great service is our number one priority and we’re sorry if the incident caused our customer any inconvenience.
However, her words ring hollow as this is not the first time that Tesco has asked for age verification wrt fruit. Kate Lancaster, at a Tesco Metro Plymouth, was asked to prove she was over 18 when buying a snack pack of water melon and grapes.

Why?
"Fruit will be age verified in case natural fermentation takes place”.

The Dangers of Daffodils

Proof, if ever it were needed, that Nanny is a complete knobhead and that some people living under the dictatorship of Nanny are utter fuckwits.

Nanny has told supermarkets to remove daffodils (which are poisonous if eaten) from the food areas of the shops, lest morons mistake them for food.

In a letter to supermarkets, Public Health England (which clearly has nothing better to do) warned that the flowers could be confused with onions or Chinese vegetables, and consumption of them was an "emerging risk".

Who is dumber, Nanny or the cretin that chooses to eat a daffodil?

Nanny To Steam All Chickens

Oh dear I sere that because some people are clueless about how to handle and cook chicken safely, and have given themselves food poisoning, Nanny's chums from the supermarkets are considering freezing or steaming all chickens that they sell.

This of course buggers up the texture, looks and flavour of the chicken.

This hysteria is as a result of a recent report by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), that noted that 18% of birds in supermarkets contained dangerously high levels of campylobacter.

So what?

Those who handle and cook their birds properly will not be poisoned by this.

Why should the actions of the incompetent penalise the competent?

The Dangers of Black Friday

Oh dear it seems people's desire to fill the voids in their lives with transient consumer products is turning them into savages.

As per the Telegraph:
"It was getting more heated by the minute and the next thing, at about ten to midnight, voices got raised. The shouting went through the roof, then all hell broke loose. They were ripping the plastic off the palettes and people started fighting. One girl, who can't have been more than 16, picked up some advent calendars and flung them across the shop. I saw a member of staff leaving with a black eye. It was something I would never like to experience again."
I am surprised Nanny hasn't stepped in and banned it!

Come on folks it's Friday, do the British thing go down to the pub drink 20 pints then pick a fight with a complete stranger; none of this American nonsense!

Booze - Nanny Hates Home Delivery

Oh dear, I see Nanny is getting all hot and bothered over our drinking habits again.

This time she is targeting elderly middle class women who, shock horror probe, have the temerity to buy their booze online from supermarkets etc.

According to Nanny, increasing numbers of female retired professionals have developed drink problems after stepping down from successful careers.

The Priory, the rehabilitation centre favoured by celebrities with addiction problems, weighed in saying that the full extent of the problem among older women could be even higher than the figures suggest because many may be keeping their drinking hidden.

Well, if the figures aren't accurate what's the scientific point in speculating about them?

Oh, wait a minute, The Priory charges for its services and doubtless benefits from free publicity...aha!
According to Dr Paul McLaren, a consultant psychiatrist at The Priory, the growth of supermarket home delivery services was making it easier for their drink problems to go unnoticed by making it easier for them to get alcohol at home.

Quoted by the Telegraph:
Many of the women I see are retired professionals who never had issues with alcohol in the past.

Then there is home delivery – I have seen many examples of alcohol being delivered to older people who are too damaged or impaired by it to go out and buy it themselves.

So they don't even have to leave home to buy alcohol – supermarket delivery services will bring it straight to their door."
It doesn't take much imagination to see what will happen next, some idiot will call for home deliveries of alcohol to be rationed or banned.

Prats of The Week - Sainsburys

Congratulations to a Sainsbury's store in Holborn, that thrust itself into the maelstrom of the Middle Eastern conflict on Saturday.

Fearing an attack by anti Israeli protesters, the store manager removed all the kosher products.
Colin Appleby, a customer was quoted by the Telegraph claiming that a staff member defended the decision, saying:
"We support Free Gaza."
All very well, maybe....except not all kosher products come from Israel; indeed many in that store were from Poland.

The removal of kosher products therefore does not target Israel, but targets people of the Jewish faith (who doubtless have a broad spectrum of views about what is happening in Gaza at the moment).

Were Sainsbury's to follow through on its own "logic" and "moral" stand, it would also presumably remove all Halal food as a protest against ISIS.

Suffice to say, once this nonsense appeared on Facebook, Sainsbury's backtracked and put the food back up on the shelves.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said:
"It was an isolated decision made by in a very challenging situation. It was chilled food and he was simply trying to preserve it.

It was the manager's decision there and then – not company policy at all. A decision was taken by a store manager faced with a challenging situation outside the store.
