Bishop's Castle Bell Enditis

Loyal readers, with good memories not addled by booze, age or illicit substances, may recall that on occasions I have written about towns and villages where the complaints of a minority (usually one newcomer) cause the silencing of church/clock bells (eg Wrington and Kendal).

I see yet another case of "bell enditis" has hit the headlines, this time in Bishop's Castle.

Seemingly Henry Hunter, the owner of the Castle Hotel in Bishop's Castle, was fed up with the town's 18th century clock chiming every 15 minutes as it kept his guests awake; he made an official request to have it chime less frequently during the night.

Unsurprisingly, given that the clock has been there since the 18th century, his request provoked uproar (according to the BBC) on the town council's Facebook page although it looks reasonably tame to my tired old eyes.

That being said, I am pleased to see that common sense has prevailed and it was announced at a meeting of town councillors this week that the request has been withdrawn.

Shirley Gould, who moved to Bishop’s Castle from Glasgow 22 years ago, attended the meeting and is quoted by the Shropshire Star:
“The visitors and tourists still keep coming and going. Some complain about it, or about the cocks crowing, or the cows mooing, or the church bells ringing.  And then they go.

But still the clock keeps chiming on the quarter hour.  And long may it continue.”
Well said!

The Bells of Kendal

Loyal readers will recall that back in November 2012 I wrote about how the Town Hall bells of Kendal were to be silenced between 11PM and 7AM, because of the complaints of two people who had recently moved into the area to run a pub.

My thanks to a loyal reader who sent me the above clipping from the Westmoreland Gazette (06/02/13), which states that the two individuals who complained about the bells are now leaving Kendal.

There's irony for you!

Suffice to say, now that Nanny has decreed that the bells will be silent, Nanny will not be changing her mind.

Beware the tyranny of the minority!

The Bells - The Tyranny of The Minority

Loyal readers, with good memories not addled by booze, age or illicit substances, may recall that on occasions I have written about towns and villages where the complaints of a minority (usually one newcomer) cause the silencing of church/clock bells (eg Wrington).

Anyhoo, it seems the tyranny of the minority has now blighted Kendal.

My thanks to a loyal reader who pointed me in the direction of the Westmorland Gazette, which reports that a date on which Kendal’s town hall bells will historically fall silent overnight has still not been set.

They are due to be turned off between 11pm and 7am for the first time since the Second World War, after complaints about ‘nuisance noise’.

It seems that whoever protested about the noise triggered an investigation which revealed sound levels were ‘unacceptable’, and in breach of environmental health laws.

The reason for the delay in silencing the bells is that it is a specialist job and it requires parts and labour that may have to be ordered.

Suffice to say, the poor old taxpayer will have to pay for this.

The tyranny of the minority is expensive!

The Minority Are Always Right

In Nanny's world the voice of the minority has become the loudest and the one that must be obeyed, even if that voice is spouting bollocks.

Step forward the minority voice (ie the single complaint) that caused Blackheath Primary School in Sandwell to recently ban parents from taking photographs of their own children during a school play.

With just minutes before the performance was due to start, the Mail reports that headteacher Lesley King announced nobody was allowed to film their children because one parent had complained.

In Nanny's world, the minority is always right and we now live under the tyranny of the minority!

Interfering Prats of The Week

Here is a variation, a sub award if you will, on my respected and acclaimed "Prats of The Week" Award.

I would like to award the interfering "one or two people", who caused Victoria Jubilee Museum in Cawthorne to remove a swastika flag (liberated by a local soldier from Berlin in 1945) from their Second World War exhibition, with my "Interfering Prats of The Week" Award.

Seemingly "one or two people" at a preview of the display complained that it showed a lack of respect to villagers who died in the war.

The museum committee did not want to upset anyone and covered the swastika with the Union flag; ie they allowed a vocal minority of "one or two people" to have their opinions placed ahead of the majority view.

Factoid: Someone brought it back after fighting to defeat the Nazis.

Airbrushing history in this manner is in fact something that the soldier (Louis Jagger), who liberated the flag, was fighting against.

Nanny Bans British

Nanny Bans British
I guess we all knew that this was coming one day, Nanny has banned "British".

The Valleys Race Equality Council (Valrec), a quango associated with Caerphilly council (that's in Wales, which is part of Britain), has warned staff against using the word "British".

For why?

Lest it upset people from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Asia or China.

Errmm...two flies in their oinkment:

1 Scotland and Wales are British

2 Why would people from Eire, China or Asia be offended at hearing the word British?

Nanny's chums from Caerphilly council are fearful that the word "creates a false sense of unity".

Ermmm...I thought we were unified yonks ago?

Would Nanny prefer that we break apart like some Balkan country, with all the bloodshed and pain that will ensue from such a break up?

Nanny rubs salt further into the wounds by categorising "British" as being as offensive as other terms such as "negro", "spastic" and "half-caste".

I would categorise the people who thought this up as being "knobheads".

Is that offensive?

FYI, Valrec is headed by former Cabinet Minister Ron Davies.

Remember him?

He quit the Government after a spot of bovver on Clapham Common, involving allegations drugs and gay sex. He refers to that incident as a "moment of madness".

I guess we can refer to his recommendations as the same.

Nanny Bans White Men

Nanny Bans White Men
Nanny really has something of a bee in her bonnet about social engineering. She can't resist trying to mould society into the shape and form that she thinks it should be.

The trouble is that her meddling is not based on any form of logic or common sense, and does immeasurable harm to society and its cohesiveness.

Seemingly, in Nanny's view, there are just too many white men working as firemen (sorry, "firepersons"). The fact that if your house is burning down, you wouldn't give a stuff as to the sexual/genetic make up of the people trying to save you and your house has escaped Nanny.

To this end, Nanny's chums in Avon Fire Service recently held some "open" days for recruiting more people to the force. The trouble is that these "open" days were not quite so "open".

Why?

Avon Fire Service banned white men from attending them.

Why?

The trolls who run Avon Fire service are worried about their "diversity" targets, and restricted the "open" days to women and ethnic minorities.

Two of the six-hour sessions have been limited to women and ethnic minorities. Another was for women only and a fourth was laid on exclusively for ethnic minorities.

How farking stupid and patronising!

How exactly does this absurd ban help the community, women or ethnic minorities?

Kevin Pearson, the brigade's chief officer, said:

"It is my concern to improve diversity so the service reflects the community it serves and we can provide the best possible service."

No!

Your job is to put fires out!

Avon was aiming for 15% of its staff to be female, and 3% to come from ethnic minorities.

What about targets for reducing the number of fires?

Utter madness!

"I'm the bad guy?"

Nanny Bans Three Little Pigs

Nanny Bans Three Little Pigs
You know folks, initially I had thought of awarding my prestigious "Prats of The Week" award to this shower; but then quickly realised that this is far worse than mere "pratism", it goes into knobhead territory.

What am I talking about?

I shall explain.

Do you recall your childhood days, when you read the story of the three little pigs who built houses of straw, twigs and brick in order to fend off the evil wolf?

A nice, harmless story.

Not so in Nanny's eyes.

For you see, dear reader, the word pig is offensive and evil.

As such, Nanny's thought police in Becta (Nanny's educational technology agency) have banned the story lest it offend Muslims.

A digital book of the tale depicts the pigs as builders, and was up for a book award run by Nanny.

The book "The Three Little Cowboy Builders" is published by Shoo Fly. The BETT awards are run by Becta, Emap Education and the British Educational Suppliers Association (Besa).

Needless to say, the judging panel, consisting of Nanny's finest brain dead thought police, didn't like it one bit. They said that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

Pass the sick bag someone!

What planet do these knobheads come from?

The judges refused to shortlist the product which, by the way has already won awards, and for good measure said that "The Three Little Cowboy Builders" might also "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)".

Blaaaargh!!!

The judges, in a remarkably patronising and divisive tone, said that they had "concerns about the Asian community" and insisted "the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

As a result, they "could not recommend this product to the Muslim community".

They also had a go at the stereotyping in the story of the pigs:

"Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

-Do these knobheads live in the real world?

-Do they actually know any Muslims or builders?

This absurd ban does nothing to improve "cultural" relations, and further isolates Muslims by tarring by association them with the intolerance and narrow mindedness that clearly the judges of this panel are wallowing in.

I have nothing but contempt for this judgement.

Where first you burn books, next you will burn people.

Here are the names of the joint chairmen of the judges:

Ray Barker
Director, BESA

Dave Hassell
Director, Education Content, Becta

Here are two email addresses where you can write to the BETT knobheads to give them your views on this subject, please make sure that you do:

-bettawards@becta.org.uk

-bettawards@emap.com

Future BETT awards should be boycotted by all publishers.

Here is Christopher Walken reading the original Three Little Pigs.

Prats of The Week

Prats of The WeekIt is a Monday morning, a tad grey and gloomy, what better time than to award my prestigious "Prats of The Week" Award?

This week it goes to Sainsbury's.

You may recall that a little over a week ago Sainsbury's were featured on this site (somewhat off message) for totally screwing up a delivery of groceries. Needless to say they further screwed the order up by failing to deliver at the agreed time on Friday (the third failed attempt by them), citing some cock and bull story that the driver had changed his route and ignored instructions.

The groceries, after another email was sent to the Justin King the CEO, eventually arrived some 3.5 hours late that day. Needless to say Sainsbury's were not finished digging their own grave, on Monday they then attempted to make another delivery of the same order.

A truly spectacular and stellar performance most certainly worthy of an award, but not this one.
No, Sainsbury's are not being awarded "Prats of The Week" for their failure to deliver groceries, but for something else.

It seems that Sainsbury's has been overcome by a bout of political correctness and spinelessness, as it has decied to allow Muslim checkout operators to refuse to handle customers' alcohol purchases on religious grounds. Other members of staff have to be called over to scan in wine and beer for them at the till.

Not only are Sainsbury's kowtowing to Muslims who object to handling drink, but they are also kowtowing to those Muslims who won't touch the morning after pill. Sainsbury's is allowing its Muslim pharmacists to refuse to sell the morning-after pill to customers. Seemingly a Sainsbury's pharmacist, named Ahmed, declined to provide the pill to a female reporter posing as a customer. A colleague explained to her that Ahmed did not sell the pill for "ethical reasons".

Here's why this excuse of ethics is bollocks:
  • People, when joining Sainsbury's, know full well what it sells

  • Employees are expected to sell products without fear or favour to customers, those that refuse to do so are clearly in breach of their terms of employment

  • Those that disapprove of the products on sale should seek employment elsewhere

  • The salaries paid to the "ethical" objectors are derived from the sales of drink, newspapers containing photos of boobs, pork and other "controversial" items. Why are the "ethical" objectors still happy to make money from the sale of "non ethical" products? Isn't that hypocritical?
Sainsbury's, in theory, should have had the brains and the guts to point that out to their "ethical" objectors; in other words they should have stood up to them.

Instead Sainsbury's has opted for the easy, cowardly route of kowtowing to bullies, religious zealots and bigots.

This country has no room for bigots, bullies or zealots. Those who don't like the system and way of life here have a number of choices:

1 Seek to change it through democratic means, by submitting their views and opinions to rigorous intellectual scrutiny and debate

2 Integrate

3 Leave

Three choices, that's far more than many people get in some religious theocracies!

As for Sainsbury's, by kowtowing in this spineless manner they have left themselves open to more demands and blackmail from zealots and bigots and have further divided society.

I trust they are very proud of themselves?

Sainsbury's, well deserving "Prats of The Week".

Educashun

EducashunIn Nanny's world, we are all equal; apart from those who are not.

She is now seeking to ensure that those whom she regards as being "different" are treated differently. Rather odd that, given her anti discrimination "beliefs", wouldn't you say?

Nanny's Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) recently confirmed that it is discussing a new exam, that will take account of the different fluency levels among ethnic minorities.

In some parts of Britain, as many as 75% of pupils have a mother tongue that is not English. Therefore Nanny seeks to "redress" the "imbalance" in the system that would clearly "favour" native English speakers, by having an exam for non native speakers.

That, to my humble view, is discrimination is it not?

How does that help them integrate?

All Nanny will end up doing is to create a second class examination system, that marks down those that take it as being second class.

Nanny Bans Staring

Nanny Bans StaringIt's rude to stare!

Surely we have all been told that at some stage by our parents, when we were nippers?

The credo of not staring at people is drummed into all of us in our formative years, quite rightly so!

Now it seems, Nanny feels that she needs to get in on the act and her chums in Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) have issued a document advising teachers and pupils not to stare.

Now, although this may seem to be "over kill" it is at least good advice and helpful to maintianing "old fashioned" manners.

Yes?

Errrmmmm...no.

Unfortunately, we live in a Nanny state where things are never straightforward or sensible. For you see, dear readers, Nanny's advice is selective.

In Nanny's world you mustn't stare at Muslims but it is OK, presumably, to stare at everyone else.

In a bizarrely stupid act of isolating and humiliating Muslims living in Scotland, Nanny's twats in LTS have issued an edict banning pupils and teachers from staring at Muslims for fear of causing offence.

The document was intended to educate against religious intolerance and sectarianism. Needless to say, by singling out one minority, all Nanny has done is to worsen race and religious relations.

The document urges teachers to "make pupils aware of the various forms of Islamophobia, ie stares, verbal abuse, physical abuse".

Are not all religions, races, sexes, people with disabilities, the middle classes, the upper classes, working classes and chavs all potentially subject to discrimination?

In other words, we are all likely at some stage to be treated by others in a disciminatory fashion (both fairly and unfairly) based on their preconceived views of who they think we are and what they think we represent.

Nanny's lackeys in LTS state in the document:

"Some Muslims may choose to wear clothing

or display their faith in a way that makes them visible.

For example, women may be wearing a headscarf,

and men might be wearing a skullcap.

Staring or looking is a form of discrimination

as it makes the other person feel uncomfortable,

or as though they are not normal
.”

How the fark does Nanny think that Muslims now feel, for being singled out in this unpleasant and patronising fashion?

A cynic might suggest that this was part of a cunning plan by Nanny to deliberately ferment suspicion and hatred between Muslims and non Muslims, so that Nanny can justify a "security clamp down".

However, I am not a cynic...am I?

Needless to say, Muslims are not that impressed with this absurd document. Osama Saeed, a spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, said:

"There are far more serious elements of Islamophobia.

People look at all sorts of things that can just be a glance.

A glance and a stare are two different things glances happen

naturally when all sorts of things catch your eye whereas

a stare is probably gawking at something.

Personally I have not encountered much of

a problem with people staring.

I don't know how you legislate for that
."

Quite, how the fark do you legislate against staring?

I recall the "Not The Nine O'clock News" sketch from the late 1970's; where constable Savage was berated for arresting a Mr Winston Kodogo on a series of trumped up charges, including "staring at me in a funny manner".

Have we really come to this?

Frankly we all dress in a "funny manner" these days, walk down any street in London (or Croydon) and you will see a veritable cornucopia of "styles" and "fashion statements".

Nanny clearly has been asleep for the last 30 years or so. Clearly the middle class/political activist "do gooders" who wasted taxpayers' money on this shit don't get out much.

I pity the good people of Scotland, who end up being on the receiving end of some real shit from Nanny which is often far worse than we get in England (see label Scotland for other Scottish Nanny nonsense).

Nanny Bans, Then Unbans Pigs

Nanny Bans, Then Unbans PigsNanny is a tortured soul, she frets 24 hours a day about the offence that may be given to every single person living in Britain by even the most harmless of remark or action.

In Nanny's world it is always better, and easier, to ban something; lest it cause offence, rather than to allow freedom of speech and freedom of action.

Why?

In my view there are two main reasons for this approach:

1 Nanny fears freedom of thought and action, as of course they undermine her rule

2 Nanny is intellectually lazy and doesn't have the time or ability to justify "controversial" actions, therefore she takes the easy option and bans things.

Here is a particularly fine example of Nanny stupidity, concerning a simple school festival that turned into a battle between common sense and utter stupidity.

Honley Junior School in West Yorkshire was to perform the Roald Dahl story of Little Red Riding Hood and the three little pigs. However, Nanny didn't approve of this and instructed the school to substitute puppies for pigs.

Why?

Isn't it obvious?

Nanny decided that some of the Muslim children singing about pigs would be embarrassed.

Can anyone tell me, at what stage did Britain become an Islamic Kalifate?

Needless to say, there has been a right old hoo ha about this senseless decision, and Kirklees Council has stepped in and authorised the use of pigs in the show.

As ever with deranged decisions, the order to ban the pigs was made by a committee. You see folks in committees no one ever has to take responsibility for acts of utter stupidity, and as such the dimmest and most spiteful of people on the committee manage to get their views acted upon.

Gill Goodswen, who is one of the organisers of the Kirklees Primary Music festival behind the changes, said:

"We have to be sensitive if we want to be multi-cultural.

It was felt it would be more responsible

not to use the three little pigs
."

She said the committee had to consider the feelings of children who would be singing along, not just the performers.

"We feared that some Muslim children wouldn't sing along

to the words about pigs.

We didn't want to take that risk.

If changing a few words avoids offence

then we will do so
."

Feeble minded people like this, who don't stand up for common sense, allow bullies and extremists to pervert our way of life; she should be reomved from office...PERIOD!

Mohammed Imran, of the nearby Hanfia Mosque and Educational Institute, said that Islam does not ban the mentioning of pigs.

Philip Davies, the Conservative MP for Shipley, said:

"My view is that the people responsible for this

are completely bonkers. It is the type of political correctness

which makes people's blood boil.

As usual it is done in the name of ethnic minorities

but it is perpetrated by white, middle class,

do-gooders with a guilt complex

and far too much time on their hands
."

Kirklees council education spokesman, Jim Dodds, stepped up to the mark (to his credit) and said the idea was bollocks:

"There is something barmy going on here

and it has happened on my watch.

I can tell you now that the three little pigs

will be back into the school musical festival.

The decision (to ban the pigs)

was made by well-meaning people -

it was the wrong decision,

so let's stick with the traditions
."

Good for him!

The festival is due to take place in June.

Re "well meaning people", these people should not be allowed out on their own, they cause more trouble and division in society than enough; because they spend their lives looking for fault in everything around them they are sad losers, willing to do Nanny's dirty work.

Convince a little man that he is performing a great task for humanity, and he will walk through fire for you.

Educashun

EducashunNanny's chum, Lord Dearing, has suggested that teachers should offer classes in languages including; Afghan, Somali, Greek, Hebrew, Turkish, Russian and Farsi.

Quote:

"We should value community languages."

Nanny's Department for Education said that individual schools would decide what language to teach.

"A school in a Somali community

might decide to teach Somali

because there are people who speak the language

and children would hear it

or read in the community every day.

This might encourage them to learn

other languages as they get older
."

OK, here's why the above is utter bollocks:

1 This is Britain, and as such, people should be speaking and learning English.

2 Our primary school children are barely able to speak and write English, why the fark should we teach them Somali?

3 There should be no separate "communities" within Britain, merely local communities of British (black, white, green etc) people.

4 "This might encourage..." in other words, it is another experiment being foisted on our decaying educashun system by Nanny.

Should this policy be enacted, it will be doomed to failure.

White Is Shite

White Is Shite
Almost as if the news stories are designed to link together (who could ever accuse media organs of doing that?) it seems that Nanny has legislated against the concept of "white is right".

Nanny's new operational phrase is "white is shite".

That at least is the case for people living in Corby Northamptonshire.

Nanny has decided to denude Corby of some public sector jobs, because its residents are "too white and British".

There you go folks...in Nanny's Britain it is now official policy for it to be illegal to be white and British!

Nanny's much "respected" Prison Service will relocate jobs from Corby to Leicester, where there are more ethnic minorities.

The decision is regarded by most sane people as being utter bollocks, and as such the Commission for Racial Equality may well launch an investigation.

It seems that Nanny, having pushed for people from around the world to move to Britain (to shore up our rapidly declining public sector) is now worried that ethnic minorities are in fact not as "fully employed" as they should be. As such, Nanny is trying to buck market forces and boost the number of ethnic minorities working in the public sector.

When the issue of the movement of 80 jobs in the Prison service to Leicester was raised, the director of finance Ann Beasley replied that the town had too many white British residents.

Quote:

"Our ability to attract a more diverse workforce

- 93.7 per cent of the population of Corby are white British,

compared to 59.6 per cent in Leicester
."

Mrs Beasley seemingly went on to imply that Corby's residents are also too stupid to keep the jobs.

The Home Orifice doesn't give a fark, and states quite baldly that attracting a "more diverse workforce" was a "key factor" in moving the jobs.

This is of course a breach of the Race Relations Act 2000.

A spokesman for the Commission for Racial Equality said that if they receive a complaint from any of the workers involved, they will start a full investigation.

Let us trust that at least one affected employee makes a complaint.

A Prison Service spokesman said:

"The key factors that influenced our decision to relocate

to Leicester were the closer proximity to a greater number

of prison establishments, better transport links,

the ability to recruit professional staff

and the ability to attract a more diverse workforce
."

This absurd policy will all end in tears, for Nanny and for the people of Britain (whatever their ethnic origin); as it is sowing the seeds of anger, resentment and division.

The House of Frasier

The House of FrasierNanny has taught us all one very vital lesson in life, no matter how trivial the complaint, one person can change things; ie the minority can exercise control over the majority.

Whether this is good or bad, I leave you to judge.

One fine example of an individual changing things occured in my wonderful home town of Croydon the other day.

The House of Fraser chain had recently started an advertising campaign for their new range of fashion bits and pieces.

The slogan for the new campaign was:

"Black is back, white is right"

Can you guess what happened next?

Yes, that's right, one person complained that the slogan was racist.

Needless to say, the House of Fraser realising that in Nanny's Britain we have lost the power of thought and reasoning, pulled the entire campaign nationwide.

The complainant, a woman who does not want to be named, said:

"One of my colleagues first told me about the poster

and I had to see it before I believed it.

I was so amazed I took a picture of it.

All I can think is that they don't have

a very culturally aware marketing team

if they couldn't see how bad it would look.

It echoes a racist poem that was around in the 1960s

which said If you is white, you's alright,

if you's brown, stick around, but if you's black,

hmm, hmm, brother, get back, get back, get back.

I just feel for the people in Croydon who remember

those times and cannot believe

that it was actually put up in a shop window
."

Now, at first sight, that may seem to be vaguely plausible. However, it is in fact utter bollocks!

Aside from the point that one person being offended should not necessarily be a valid reason for cancelling a campaign, there is a far larger fly in this woman's oinkment.

Her facts are wrong.

The "racist" poem that she inaccurately quotes, was in fact a Blues song written and performed by Big Bill Broonzy, the song was called "Black, Brown, and White Blues" (listen to an extract by clicking the link).

Mr Broonzy was in fact an American Blues singer, and ...errrmm...he was black.

The song was written to express his feelings about the inequalities between the races in America, at that time. Therefore, how the fark can the "complainant" describe it as being racist?

"Just listen to this song I'm singin brother,
you know its true,
If you're black and got to work for a living,
here's what people will say,
Now if you're white,
you're all right,
And if you're brown,
stick around;
But if you're black,
oh brother,
Get back, get back, get back
"

It's a pity that the House of Frasier did not bother to do some research and stand their ground, even if their slogan was rather lame.

As ever, in Nanny's Britain a little ignorance goes a long way!

Feel free to contact the House of Frasier via this link HOF.
