Holidays Are Bad For You

Nanny's chums from Liverpool University have conducted a study which, in their eyes, proves that taking a fortnight's holiday is bad for you.

Apparently two weeks of enjoying yourself not only piles on the pounds and farks up your liver, but also causes a loss of muscle mass.

As per The Sun:
"Researchers asked 28 fit, young adults to cut activity levels by 80 per cent, from 10,000 daily steps to just 1,500. By the end of 14 days, they had lost a third of a kilogram of lean muscle and their waistlines had grown 1cm.

And when they took up their old exercise regime, they did not get back in shape within a fortnight."

Now fair enough 14 days of over indulging and lounging about will no doubt add a few pounds, and temporarily give your liver an extra "workout". However, will you lose muscle mass?

As with everything else, despite Nanny's desire to compartmentalise us, there is no one size fits all answer.

As per Livestrong:
"In the most drastic scenario, you can lose up to 80 percent of your fitness level in as few as two weeks if you’re new to exercise. If you are incredibly fit and have been training for years, you’ll hang onto your fitness level for about three months, ACE Fitness says.

If you start retraining after a lull, however, your muscles will remember where you left off and build up more rapidly than if you were just starting a new program.

The detraining period actually strengthens muscle fibers, which means your retraining can lead to a higher fitness level that you might have been able to achieve had you not taken a break, Columbia University says."
In other words Nanny, as usual, is scaremongering.

For why?

She wants us to cut back on holidays and work more, so that she can take her cut of our salaries.

Nanny's 30 Second Obesity Intervention

The Guardian reports the following about a 30 second obesity intervention:
"GPs who raise the issue of their patients’ obesity in the surgery will not offend them and are likely to help them reach a healthy weight, a new study has shown.

Doctors are notoriously nervous of telling people they are overweight and worry that initiating any discussion will lead to a long, fruitless conversation about failed diets and eating habits that will go on long beyond a 10-minute consultation.
But a trial of a 30-second intervention in which the GP suggests the patient’s weight may be affecting their health and offers them a place on a weigh-loss programme reveals advice can make a major difference, according to research published in the Lancet medical journal.

More than 130 GPs who took part in the trial, involving more than 1,800 patients, were asked to start a conversation that might go like this:
GP: While you’re here, I just wanted to talk about your weight. You know the best way to lose weight is to go to [a weigh-management programme such as Slimming World or Rosemary Conley] and that’s available free on the NHS?
Patient: Oh?
GP: Yes, and I can refer you now if you are willing to give that a try?
The patients were randomly assigned to be offered either an NHS-funded place on a 12-week weight-management programme or advice to lose weight. The researchers found that 77% of those offered a weight-management programme said yes, and 40% went to all the sessions. At the end of a year, those people had lost 2.43kg (0.38 stone) on average, while those given advice by the GP had also lost weight, but less, at an average of 1.04kg."
I wouldn't be offended either, if my doctor (who I visit once every 16 years or so, ie when I am very ill or when I need a medical) suggested that I needed to deal with my weight.

However, nothing on the planet would force me into a "programme". You lose weight by cutting calories and exercising more, I don't need to state to monitor my activity level or calorie intake!

Booze Offset By 150 Minutes of Weekly Exercise

According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine modest exercise of 150 minutes per week can offset the harmful effects of booze.

The researchers, from the University of Sydney, analysed data from nationally representative health surveys carried out in England and Scotland between 1994 and 2006.

They found that, after taking into account external factors, there is a direct association between drinking larger amounts of alcohol and death from all causes and from cancer.

The researchers found that the risk was reduced/eliminated among those who are physically active, which they define as requiring at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every week.

Fair enough, as it rather knocks on the head Nanny's doom laden lectures telling us not to drink.

However, is it not possible that those who are active are generally healthier than others, and that it is that general level of good health that motivates/energises them to be active (ie energy and activity are by products of good health).

As such is it not the old story that some people will die younger than others, no matter what, and that "one size fits all" recommendations for booze/exercise do not work?

Offices - The New Fags

Oh dear, it seems that Nanny has found something else to moan to us about. This time it seems that office workers must exercise for one hour a day to combat the deadly risk of modern working lifestyles, a major Lancet study has found.

Research on more than one million adults found that sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase the risk of premature death by up to 60 per cent. Scientists said sedentary lifestyles were now posing as great a threat to public health as smoking, and were causing more deaths than obesity.

How about we just stop working in offices?

That seems to be the issue.

Ah but then we wouldn't be able to earn money to pay Nanny's taxes, and that she would never allow!

The Dangers of The Olympics

Those who follow Nanny's exaltations would be forgiven for believing that sport is a healthy activity that leads to all manner of life improving benefits (both mental and physical).

Yet, for the athletes heading to Rio for the Olympics, this appears not to be so. Aside from the risk of catching Zika and breathing Rio's heavily polluted air, the hapless healthy athlete also have to contend with massively polluted waterways and beaches.

Whoever said that athletes lead healthy lives?

Eat More Fat

As loyal readers know, Nanny's health advice wrt many things is being disproved on a daily basis.

Hot on the heels of the debacle over her advice about eating less fat, Lord McColl (emeritus professor of surgery at Guys Hospital in London) has weighed in (see the pun there?) and said that low fat diets and exercise are pointless for those wanting to lose weight and obese people should simply eat less.

Lord McColl warned that current health advice to avoid fat was ‘false and misleading’ and was fuelling the obesity epidemic. He noted that exercising was useless against the huge levels of calories from carbohydrates and sugars that people are now consuming.

Quoted by the Telegraph he laid into our chums from Nice:
In the UK the Department of Health and Nice (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) maintains for many years that the obesity epidemic was due to lack of exercise.

It’s a pity that the 500 people employed by Nice didn’t think to go into the gymnasium get on a machine and exercise to see how few calories you actually burn off.

One can pedal away on one of those machines for half an hour and only two or three hundred calories are burned up. One has to run miles to take a pound of fat off.

The whole subject has been bedevilled by all sorts of theories about the course of the obesity; genetics, epigenetic, psychological disturbances. None of them is the cause of the obesity epidemic.

One fact remains. It is impossible to be obese unless one is eating too many calories.

He noted that eating fat was important because it kept people feeling fuller for longer, and advised overweight people to start adding fat into their diet.
Fat enters the small intestine and greatly delays the emptying of the stomach.

As the stomach emptying is delayed it gives the feeling that one has had enough to eat. Later when the fat has been absorbed the stomach then starts to empty again, It’s a beautifully balance mechanism which tends to prevent us from eating too much and prevents us from getting obese.
There you go, what have I been telling you for years on this site?

It is also worth noting that low fat foods are not low calorie.

For why?

The manufacturers add sugar, in order to make up for the lack of flavour caused by removing the fat.

In other words those people who buy low fat foods, in the belief that they will help them lose weight, are being conned by both Nanny and the manufacturers!

Exercise Is Pointless

As loyal readers know, Nanny has a bee in her bonnet about obesity and exercise; she is of the view that we are lazy bastards who need to exercise a lot more.

Well, blinkey blonkey blimey along comes three international experts who (in an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine) blow a large hole in Nanny's obsession, by stating that physical activity has little role in tackling obesity.

The experts instead want Nanny to lecture us about our unhealthy eating (she does that anyway!).

Seemingly, if the experts are to be believed, activity is a key part of staving off diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and dementia. However, its impact on obesity is minimal.

Dr Aseem Malhotra is quoted by the BBC:
"An obese person does not need to do one iota of exercise to lose weight, they just need to eat less. My biggest concern is that the messaging that is coming to the public suggests you can eat what you like as long as you exercise.

That is unscientific and wrong. You cannot outrun a bad diet."
In the bubble of academia in which experts live (outwith reality), this is reasoning is perfectly sound and valid. However, once transmitted to the real world, the message becomes confused and people end up not knowing what to do.

It is a matter of common sense that if you eat a balanced diet (with occasional lapses), and do sensible exercise (eg walking), then you will be healthier.

Nanny's shrill voice, and confused messages, simply confuse and annoy people.

On Your Feet!

On Your Feet Britain says that office work is bad for you, sitting for long periods at work is linked to a host of health problems, which are not undone by working out in the gym.

It goes on to say that things were a lot better 100 years ago.

Thus I suggest that we all go down the mines or into the cotton mills, and return to a way of life and work that was much "healthier"!

Exercise is Dangerous

I am gemused to learn that the Copenhagen City Heart Study, conducted on runners, concluded that too much exercise really can kill you.

The study of 1,098 runners found that those who ran the fastest were nine times more likely to die prematurely within 12 years than those who enjoyed a more sedate pace of around 5mph for two or three times a week.

In fact, strenuous runners were as likely to die as those who did no physical activity.

Peter Schnohr, MD, DMSc, is quoted by the Telegraph:
"There may be an upper limit for exercise dosing that is optimal for health benefits.
It is important to emphasize that the pace of jogging corresponds to very vigorous exercise.

When performed for decades, this activity level could pose health risks, especially to the cardiovascular system.

If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, it may be harmful."
As ever, it is a case of eating, drinking and exercising in balance rather than to extremes.

Exercise Less

I am gemused to see that Nanny's advice that we should do 150 minutes of exercise a week, has been castigated in the BMJ as being unrealistic.

Instead of setting a target that many (eg the elderly) can't achieve, researchers argue that doctors should set more achievable targets of small increases in activity (especially for those who currently do fark all exercise).

Prof Philipe de Souto Barreto at the University Hospital of Toulouse, advises people who are sedentary to make small incremental increases in their activity levels - rather than pushing to achieve current goals.

He points to previous studies which show even short periods of walking or just 20 minutes of vigorous activity a few times a month, can reduce the risk of death, compared to people who do no exercise.

In the second article, Prof Phillip Sparling of the Georgia Institute of Technology, says doctors should tailor their advice - particularly for older patients.

He suggests using GP visits for people over 60 to discuss "realistic options" to increase activity - such as getting people to stand up and move during TV commercial breaks.

Suffice to say, Nanny is having non of this backsliding nonsense!

Prof Kevin Fenton at Public Health England, is quoted by the BBC:
"Everyone needs to be active every day - bouts of 10 or more minutes of physical activity have proven health benefits, but getting 150 minutes or more of moderate activity every week is the amount we need to positively impact on a wide range of health conditions.

This includes reducing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes."
It is farking pointless of Nanny to stick rigidly to the 150 minute formula, if people are put off from doing anything at all if they are told that they MUST do 150 minutes a week in order to save themselves from diseases!

Exercise Is Anti Establishment

According to this rather demented article in the Guardian, people who exercise in a gym (ie those who try to take care of their health and fitness) are right wing, libertarians who despise the state.

Thus we must conclude from the Guardian's article that "nice" people, who believe in the munificence of the state, should be unhealthy and fat.

Isn't that rather contrary to the advice that Nanny keeps giving us about losing weight and taking exercise?

Nanny Hates Fat People

In keeping with the ongoing onslaught of diet and anti fat BS being spewed forth by Nanny and the food/diet industry, I am "gemused" to see that a Tory council (Westminster) has declared war on fat people who claim benefits.

Westminster council wants fat people who claim benefits to take more exercise, fat people who refuse to attend exercise sessions could have their benefits slashed and GPs would also be allowed to prescribe leisure activities like swimming and fitness classes under the plans.

This Orwellian idea is contained in a report entitled A Dose of Localism: The Role of Council in Public Health, in a link-up between Westminster Council and the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU).

It seems that Nanny has used 1984 as the blue print for her vision of "utopia".

Orwell would not be pleased, as he wrote the book as a warning not a blue print!

The Inactivity Pandemic

I am gemused to read that the Lancet is warning us that there is an "Inactivity Pandemic".

What the fark?

Seemingly, if the "research" is to be believed, lack of exercise is now causing as many deaths as smoking across the world.

A report, published in the Lancet (needless to say to coincide with the Olympics which has corporate sponsors such as McDonald's and Coke), estimates that about a third of adults are not doing enough physical activity; causing 5.3m deaths a year.

Researchers want the problem treated as a pandemic, and they recommend that Nanny warns us about the dangers of inactivity rather than just reminds us of the benefits of being active.

I have a far better solution, Nanny should proactively encourage us all to take up smoking:

1 The exercise from going to buy a packet of fags, from coughing vigorously each morning and from lifting a fag to our mouths will surely increase our metabolism.

2 The increase in deaths brought about by smoking will skew the statistics favourably towards smoking, rather than inactivity, as being the prime killer.

Problem solved!

Sport Is "Too Competitive"

I see that a survey, carried out by the Institute of Sport at Loughborough University for the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF), highlighted that 45% of the girls questioned said that sport at school was "too competitive" and that 48% said being sweaty was "not feminine".

This is rather ironic, given that way back in the "bad old days" girls were not encouraged/allowed to play football, rugby etc.

I wonder if anyone has told Roedean that girls don't want to sweat or compete?

Now, in theory, what Nanny should do under these circumstances (in order to encourage more girls to participate in physical exercise) is to try to ensure that schools offer a greater variety of activities that will benefit and appeal to both males and females.

However, because Nanny is skint, Nanny will opt for the easiest worst case option; namely removing the sweat and competitiveness from the current sports available, in order to create a "one size fits all" sports curriculum.

Guaranteed to fail!

Personally speaking I loathed PE and sports of most kinds, and did my best to avoid them. Yet, here I am fit, healthy and not obese!

Health and Fitness

As we all know, Nanny, the media, the medical profession and various self appointed "health experts" merrily bombard us on a daily basis with propaganda about the importance of taking regular exercise and of being "fit".

On that point, would the above "experts" care to define exactly what "fit/fitness" actually is?

Anyhoo, I was more than gemused to learn today that tonight's Horizon will be about how one only need to take vigorous intense exercise of around 3 minutes a week in order to remain "fit" (no definition of course as to what "fit" actually means).

I was also extremely gemused to see that the "experts" have finally admitted to what the rest of us have known all along, namely that different people respond differently to exercise (ie we are all different, and each of us will "benefit from/be harmed by" exercise in different ways). The scientific buzzwords are "responders" and "non responders"

This of course means that the "one size fits all" prescription by Nanny and others of the type and duration of exercise is of course bollocks!

As to what "fit" actually means, here is my definition:

You are fit if you are able to conduct your daily life without any discomfort, undue effort or distress.

Therefore if you daily life consist of drinking 8 pints a day, and you are able to do this without any distress or discomfort, then you are fit!

Eat More!

I was gemused to read that there is yet more advice from some "experts" over how much people can "safely" eat.

In 1991 the Committee on the Medical Aspects of Food Policy (COMA) set out that the average man should be eating 2,550 calories daily, and the average woman 1,940.

However, after lengthy consultation, these limits have been raised by 55 calories for men and 139 calories for women.

Hoozah!

It seems that the old figures were based on "limited available evidence".

Errrmm..doesn't that mean that the old figures were in fact guesses?

In fact, I would go so far as to say that the "experts" who are so fond of telling us how much we can "safely" eat are talking bollocks.

For why?

Well, my loyal readers with long memories may well recall that in May this year I wrote the following:

"scientific research (carried out by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition) indicates that these limits (wrt calories) are too low. Men can in fact eat 2900 calories and women 2320."

So, which "experts" do you believe?

I suggest that we all ignore the "experts" and simply follow the old maxim "a little of what you fancy, does you good".

Baby Exercise

BS
I am gemused to see that Nanny, not content with lecturing adults about obesity and exercise, has now taken to lecturing babies and toddlers about exercise.

Seemingly babies and toddlers need to exercise more, 3 hours a day in fact.

Errmm....precisely how do you get a baby to exercise more? They either move around and explore the world they live in (ie exercise in natural way), or are restrained from doing so by overprotective parents.

The issue, it seems, is not the amount of exercise but the "restraints" imposed on a baby's natural movements/curiosity by risk averse/lazy parents.

It beats me how generations of parents over the millennia managed to function before the advent of Nanny!

Dodgy Science

On December 1st I wrote that the "five a day" advice about eating five portions of fruit and veg a day was bollocks.

Now, some 16 days later, Nanny's chums from Oxford University research write that that was in fact bollocks. They claim that a "staggering" 33,000 lives could be saved a year in Britain if everybody ate five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day and stuck to recommended guidelines for salt, fat and fibre.

Snort!

More bollocks I suspect for sadly, as we know, Nanny likes to mould "facts" to fit her own agenda.

Additionally, out of a population of 60 million 33K is but a pin prick (given that this doubtless includes a vast number of people whose deaths have but merely been postponed for a wee while, and who have been condemned to live a little longer in pain and discomfort).

Eat, drink and exercise in a sensible manner (listen to your body, not Nanny) and allow yourselves indulgences. That is the key to a healthy happy life.
