Restaurant Offers Discount For Well Behaved Kids
The Evening Standard has rather an amusing story about a restaurant in Italy that offers discounts for diners with well behaved kids.
Antonio Ferrari, who owns a restaurant in Padua, said he was fed up of ill-mannered children ruining the atmosphere.
He told the Times he decided to introduce a five per cent discount for “polite children” after witnessing countless instances of kids behaving badly.
He told the paper: “We are not set up for kids we have no crèche, the spaces are tight, bottles can be knocked over and we have a clientele that spends a bit of money to be tranquil while eating well.
“I have seen five-year-olds put their feet on the table and four-year-olds jumping from chair to chair, while parents do nothing.
“And when I complain the parents tell me 'My children can do what they want'."
Mr Ferrari said he introduced the discount six months ago and in that time has only given it to three families.
It “shows how rare good behaviour is”, he added.
An excellent idea, one that should be copied by restaurants everywhere!

Bollocks Research - Smiling is Sexist
In a stunning piece of bollocks "research" that on the scale of 1 to 10 of bollocks, hits 20, some bods in the USA have concluded that manners are every bit as sexist as rudeness.
The "research" was carried out on a staggering 27 pairs of undergraduates (yes 54 people!), that's most certainly a statistically reliable number of people on which to conduct "research".
The "research" concluded that men who open doors for women are as guilty of sexism as those who are rude to them. Psychologists found that a friendly or chivalrous attitude can mask
chauvinistic and patronising views, because the men see females as weak
creatures in need of their protection.
Psychologist Jin Goh of Northeastern University, Boston, is quoted by the Telegraph:
"While many people are sensitive to sexist verbal offences, they may not readily associate sexism with warmth and friendliness.
Unless sexism is understood as having both hostile and benevolent properties, the insidious nature of benevolent sexism will continue to be one of the driving forces behind gender inequality in our society."For good measure, seemingly smiling is also sexist!
"those who displayed a benevolent sexism were considered more approachable, warmer, friendlier and more likely to smile."This would be laughable, if it were not for the fact that good money has been wasted on this shite!

Manners Maketh Man and Sainsbury's
One of the by-products of living in the Nanny state, wherein self responsibility and the consequences of our actions have been eradicated by the state, is the general lack of manners that pervades society; manners after all indicate that we have empathy and respect for others, and that we are cognisant that our actions and words affect others.
Thus is is interesting to see the debate that has sprung up over an incident in Sainsbury's Crayford the other day, where a checkout lady refused to serve a customer (Jo Clarke) who was talking on her mobile phone. Sainsbury's, at the time, sent the customer a £10 voucher along with an apology. However, as sometimes happens with "small" incidents, the story has rather gained traction and the BBC has gained sight of a letter from Sainsbury's:
"It is clear this story has touched a nerve as the weight of comment shows.Seemingly the Sainsbury's worker told Ms Clarke that it was company policy not to serve people who were occupied with their mobile phones, but that was denied at the time by the company.
However, we are also pleased that this specific story is leading to a wider debate on politeness.......the discussion this has created leads us all to think twice before reaching for our mobile phones and to recognise the great job the many thousands of sales assistants working across retail do.."
I have a simple view on this, it is rude RUDE to talk on a mobile when interacting with another human being.
PERIOD!
There is a certain type of person who seems to regard shop assistants, waiters etc etc as second class citizens who do not deserve to be treated with the same courtesy as others. At this point we can all come up with examples of rude sales staff, waiters etc. However, that does not mean we should tar all staff with the same brush.
Manners are there for all, whether you are royalty or someone who is down on their luck sleeping on a park bench. Treat people with the same courtesy and respect as you would wish to be treated yourself!
Miss Clarke's response to the furore:
"I think everybody’s been guilty of it (using a mobile at a checkout) sometime in their life – that’s how it is.”Well I haven't, have you?

Prats of The Week - Brighton and Hove City Council
Ooooh errr missus (or should I say mr/ms/mx?), 'tis a Tuesday morning and I have not yet awarded my prestigious and internationally renowned Prats of The Week Award.
This week it goes to Brighton and Hove Council for wasting scarce time, effort and money on procrastinating over scrapping the titles "Mr, Mrs and Ms".
For why is the council considering this idea?
The proposal to scrap all titles from official council forms and paperwork comes after transgender activists complained that the names forced people to choose between genders.
The proposal has the backing of Brighton and Hove City Council’s deputy leader Phelim MacCafferty.
Seemingly a scrutiny panel (which looked into the lives of the transgender community in Brighton) is to put forward a number of recommendations, including the scrapping of Mr and Mrs, to the council for approval in December.
According to the Argus Coun MacCafferty, who chairs the panel, suggested calling people by their titles on official forms was “completely useless”.
However, as is the case with so many things in life, you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
Steph Scott, an LGBT activist who defines herself/himself as ‘genderqueer’ – neither male nor female – described the titles Mr and Mrs as “extremely outdated”.
We face many years of austerity and cuts, yet the issue that vexes the mind of Brighton councillors is this one!
Has the council lost all sense of proportionality/reality as to what is really important at the moment?
Personally speaking I would prefer to be called "Excellency", but the council haven't yet set up scrutiny panel to look into that.

“Trans people aren’t necessarily male or female and sometimes they don’t want to be defined by their gender. The use of a "title" in communications (oral or written), as far as I was brought up to understand it, is done out of courtesy/manners.
Putting Mr and Mrs on a form is completely useless. This is an issue that concerns most institutions from banks to mobile phone companies.
Why is Mr on my debit card, for instance? I don’t understand why it’s there.
We should at least examine the issue and we will have the recommendations early next month.”
However, as is the case with so many things in life, you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
Steph Scott, an LGBT activist who defines herself/himself as ‘genderqueer’ – neither male nor female – described the titles Mr and Mrs as “extremely outdated”.
“Being called Mr or Mrs forces me to choose between genders.Seemingly Brighton and Hove City Council has already started addressing people by the gender-neutral title 'Mx' on their tax forms.
It’s assuming people live in a binary world where you’re either one thing or another and it pigeonholes people.
I think it’s a good idea to expand across the city because it’s about getting people to be aware that gender isn’t just male or female.”

Nanny Cameron Bans Beyonce
Dear oh dear, the Tory Party appears to be regressing to the 1950's in its Canute like reaction to "raunchy" pop videos; as it has had an attack of the "Samantha Bricks" (ie it has completely lost touch with reality).
Nanny Cameron, instead of focusing on issues that really matter (eg wars in the Middle East, austerity, care for the elderly, the Motorman Blue Book) has decided to focus his energies on banning "raunchy" pop videos.
Nanny Cameron has decreed that people under the age of 18 should not watch scantily clad attractive people gyrate in suggestive manners on videos. He wants the videos classified (in the same manner as films), and for sites that host them to bar under 18's from watching them.
May I ask Nanny Cameron, have you ever watched one of these videos, or is this rather like the pasty that you never really ate?
Factoid: children/teenagers getting sweaty and excited over "raunch" is nothing new, and not a threat to society (whatever the state might try to tell us).
Children/teenagers/adults being subjected to a daily bombardment of violence in soaps and on the TV news is likely to be far more damaging.
I appreciate that Nanny has had a self inflicted lousy few weeks; what with the "Granny Tax", Pastygate, private dinners, government surveillance etc etc. However, using this as an attempt to divert people's attention from these and other issues is absolutely pathetic and indicates that Nanny has completely lost touch with reality.
For fark's sake Tories get your act together!
Oh, and for good measure, I see that another person who has never lived in the real world (namely the Duchess of Cornwall) has also decreed that raunchy videos (which she has never watched) are bad for us!
Censorship is Nanny's favourite weapon!

Bad Manners
GPs will also receive money from Nanny for keeping lists of "fat" people.
A scheme that, if some doctors were broke or unscrupulous, could be massively open to abuse; eg:
- "You're fat!"
- "Please may I have money now Nanny?"
Aside from the dangers of abuse, isn't this something that doctors are meant to do anyway if they see that their patient's health is being affected by their weight?
Anyhoo, I was always taught that it was bad manners to comment on other people's weight and appearance.
This scheme is Complete and utter bollocks!

Nanny is Mother, Nanny is Father - Nanny's Hell on Earth
My thanks to Sam for posting a very insightful response to my recent article on Dickensian Britain.
I reproduce Sam's response in full below, as I believe it is worth highlighting in its own right.
Nanny is creating hell on earth, and no one seems willing or able to stop her.
"Reading the comments it seems like none of you have considered why so many kids are not toilet-trained, are rude and violent, can't hold cutlery let alone polite conversations.
State and economic insistence on both parents working + execrable dumping grounds (aka 'nurseries') = immature, disturbed and disturbing kids who lead chaotic lives amidst strangers predominantly.
The damning academic research was conclusive ten years and more ago. Yet the gov has simply let this mass abuse of our little children continue unabated.
Anecdotally, I have a daughter-in-law who, on her path to becoming a child psychologist (for which profession there is an explosion in demand), has spent the last 6months at one of these 'nurseries'.
The reports are grim. She goes home every night in tears (this isn't hyperbole for effect).
Staff are very poorly paid and undereducated. Staff are bullied and bullied - particularly about the latest set of 'targets' and their fulfilment, and about inspections (the last of which had the manager screaming round the day before getting all staff to sign that they'd done a whole course in Elf'n'Safety, when of course, they hadn't. The inspector saw the anomalies but nonetheless gave the nursery a good mark).
Children are left there from 8am to 6pm and longer. They have a couple of rushed hours with their parents who feel so guilty that at weekends they indulge and spoil their little cherubs rotten.
Half the four yos can't use a toilet properly. Several don't know how to sit down and eat a meal normally. Boys particularly are violent and abusive. Girls fight viciously. Every week almost my d-i-l has to make a formal report of injury that is serious enough to be entered in the elf'n'safety book - that is, an injury deliberately done to HER by one of these children.
You'd think this was some sink estate, wouldn't you? It's not. These are the children of both the new middle-classes and of 'traditional' professionals. These parents are not lazy - they're pushed beyond what is good for their children and what is good for themselves by this care-less, tax, tax, tax socialist culture. They don't have time for their kids, let alone for washing nappies, ensuring decent table manners, and teaching respect and courtesy. They have no time for loving their children...
God help us. Really. These kids are the ones who will be responsible for our welfare as we age. This is a country on the road to sheer hell."

The Dangers of Gravy
Gosh had I read the leaflet, I would never have ventured out last Friday!
FNAAAR!
Anyhoo, Nanny safety leaflet (issued in the form of an Advent style calendar) warns about the dangers of gravy "exploding" in microwaves, pissed people falling over (gosh!) and Christmas tree baubles.
Nanny's knobheads from Ed Balls' Department for Children, Schools and Families have issued 150,000 of the leaflets called "Tis The Season To Be Careful". I have no idea why they think this will help people enjoy Christmas.
Why oh why do we allow these people to remain in government?
Anyhoo, my advice to you all is to ignore Nanny and have it large this Christmas!

Nanny Bans Manners
Upon entering the train at Westminster a number of adults were standing.
For why?
The seats, including those marked for the elderly and disabled, were all occupied by children (aged between 8 and 10).
To make matters worse, the children were accompanied by their teacher who should have told them to give up their seats.
Now, when I was a lad, I was told to give up my seat to adults.
Ah, but how wrong I am.
You see, this is Nanny Britain, health and safety is the new doctrine (designed to crunch individuality and freedom). Seemingly the teacher was operating under the mantra of health and safety that dictates children must be seated, even if there are elderly people standing.
What a nice lesson to give to the children!

Educashun
Nanny's much vaunted priority of "Educashun, Educashun, Educashun" appears to have hit the buffers.
Taxpayers have forked out over £21BN since 1997, on Nanny's early years education overhaul.
The result?
Fark all!
Nanny has failed to improve development levels of children entering primary school, according to research published last week.
A six-year study of 35,000 children by academics at Durham University found that children's development and skills, as they enter primary school, are no different than they were in 2000.
Since coming to orifice, Nanny introduced the early childhood curriculum, expanded the Sure Start programme, introduced free nursery education for all three-year-olds, passed the Children's Act 2004 and brought in the Every Child Matters Initiative.
There are some 1,325 Sure Start Children's Centres, and the Government wants to increase this to 2,500 by 2008.
Dr Christine Merrell, who led the Durham research, said her results suggested the Government's initiatives were not working.
"One would have expected that the major
Government programmes would have resulted
in some measurable changes in our sample
of almost 35,000 children".
Pre primary school, I had a morning or two in nursery school (with my toy rabbit, Merrythought, who still is around today). However, the majority of my pre primary teaching re manners, reading and other matters (eg how to dress myself and interact with others) was performed by my parents.
That's what parents are there for isn't it?
It is not the state's role to take over from the parents...PERIOD!

Prats of The Week
Maybe we didn't party hard enough???
Anyhoo in honour of this, the 1001th article, I hereby give the prestigious "Prats of The Week" Award to...
A roll on the drums please...
The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT).
For why?
They have come up the ludicrous proposal to shut down websites such as YouTube and MySpace, because in their view they promote bullying.
It is for sure that in recent months, a number of teachers and children have been subject to bullying, and even death threats, online. However, some children are little shits and have always had a liking for bullying.
The use of the web is merely an adaptation of a centuries old nasty habit. It is down to parents and teachers to guide children through the moral maze of growing up, and instill in them basic values of decency and good manners.
Calling for the banning of websites is a cop out, as the use of websites is a symptom not a cause of ill discipline and shitty behaviour.
PAT claim that the only short-term solution to the problem is to close the popular sites down.
The proposal, which was put forward by Kirsti Paterson, was backed by hundreds of delegates attending the association's annual conference in Harrogate this week.
Ms Paterson, of PAT's Highland and Western Isles Federation said:
"Without the ban nowhere will be safe from cyberbullying."
Utter bollocks!
This shows how little the "teachers" understand how the real world works.
Aside from the points I have made above, I would like to acquaint PAT with another rather blindingly obvious point.
YouTube et al are legitimate commercial organisations based in the USA.
Precisely how do you go about (as member of PAT UK) enforcing an unenforceable banning order on a legitimate foreign commercial operation?
Were PAT ever likely to achieve this absurd dream, eg by the creation of British version of the Great Firewall of China (maybe that's what they really want...mass censorship?), other sites emulating YouTUbe would simply pop up...that's the way the internet works.
It is rather alarming that PAT wastes its time and resources on discussing fantasy issues, that cannot be addressed in this manner, that clearly shows it has no grasp on reality.
PAT, well deserving Prats of The Week.

Nanny Bans Staring
Surely we have all been told that at some stage by our parents, when we were nippers?
The credo of not staring at people is drummed into all of us in our formative years, quite rightly so!
Now it seems, Nanny feels that she needs to get in on the act and her chums in Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) have issued a document advising teachers and pupils not to stare.
Now, although this may seem to be "over kill" it is at least good advice and helpful to maintianing "old fashioned" manners.
Yes?
Errrmmmm...no.
Unfortunately, we live in a Nanny state where things are never straightforward or sensible. For you see, dear readers, Nanny's advice is selective.
In Nanny's world you mustn't stare at Muslims but it is OK, presumably, to stare at everyone else.
In a bizarrely stupid act of isolating and humiliating Muslims living in Scotland, Nanny's twats in LTS have issued an edict banning pupils and teachers from staring at Muslims for fear of causing offence.
The document was intended to educate against religious intolerance and sectarianism. Needless to say, by singling out one minority, all Nanny has done is to worsen race and religious relations.
The document urges teachers to "make pupils aware of the various forms of Islamophobia, ie stares, verbal abuse, physical abuse".
Are not all religions, races, sexes, people with disabilities, the middle classes, the upper classes, working classes and chavs all potentially subject to discrimination?
In other words, we are all likely at some stage to be treated by others in a disciminatory fashion (both fairly and unfairly) based on their preconceived views of who they think we are and what they think we represent.
Nanny's lackeys in LTS state in the document:
"Some Muslims may choose to wear clothing
or display their faith in a way that makes them visible.
For example, women may be wearing a headscarf,
and men might be wearing a skullcap.
Staring or looking is a form of discrimination
as it makes the other person feel uncomfortable,
or as though they are not normal.”
How the fark does Nanny think that Muslims now feel, for being singled out in this unpleasant and patronising fashion?
A cynic might suggest that this was part of a cunning plan by Nanny to deliberately ferment suspicion and hatred between Muslims and non Muslims, so that Nanny can justify a "security clamp down".
However, I am not a cynic...am I?
Needless to say, Muslims are not that impressed with this absurd document. Osama Saeed, a spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, said:
"There are far more serious elements of Islamophobia.
People look at all sorts of things that can just be a glance.
A glance and a stare are two different things glances happen
naturally when all sorts of things catch your eye whereas
a stare is probably gawking at something.
Personally I have not encountered much of
a problem with people staring.
I don't know how you legislate for that."
Quite, how the fark do you legislate against staring?
I recall the "Not The Nine O'clock News" sketch from the late 1970's; where constable Savage was berated for arresting a Mr Winston Kodogo on a series of trumped up charges, including "staring at me in a funny manner".
Have we really come to this?
Frankly we all dress in a "funny manner" these days, walk down any street in London (or Croydon) and you will see a veritable cornucopia of "styles" and "fashion statements".
Nanny clearly has been asleep for the last 30 years or so. Clearly the middle class/political activist "do gooders" who wasted taxpayers' money on this shit don't get out much.
I pity the good people of Scotland, who end up being on the receiving end of some real shit from Nanny which is often far worse than we get in England (see label Scotland for other Scottish Nanny nonsense).

Nanny is Mother, Nanny is Father
However, as usual when Nanny sticks her nose into the affairs of her "charges", Nanny has oversteped the mark in imposing her views on the rest of us.
It is reported that schools in Britain will spend nearly £10M teaching children how to make friends, resolve squabbles and learn manners.
Nanny's friends in the Department of Education have said that social and emotional skills are no longer the main responsibility of parents.
In other words Nanny wants to take over the role of the biological parents, and become mother and father.
Children will be encouraged to talk about their emotions and play a quiz called "Guess what I am feeling?". They then will design an "emotional barometer" to rate the strength of their feelings.
They will be encouraged to pass round a cuddly toy to stroke to help them understand the "nice" feelings resulting from a compliment.
Once again Nanny has shown that her mission is to make people dependent on her, thus ensuring that she will always have a role to play.
Nanny must be made to understand that it is not the role of the state to act as surrogate parents.
As David Hart, of the National Association of Head Teachers, said:
"Once again, schools are being used to make good the deficiencies of parents..I think there's a distinct danger that we are drifting more and more into the nanny state."
I couldn't have put it better myself.
