Nanny Wants To Tax Chocolate In Order To Get Empirical Data

It appears that taxing sugary drinks is not as effective as Nanny told us.

It is now "accepted fact" that taxing chocolate and other sweet foods would be a more effective anti-obesity strategy than the new “sugar tax” on fizzy drinks.

A study by Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, predicts that adding 10 per cent to the price of confectionery, cakes and biscuits could lead to a 7 per cent drop in purchases.

The figures are similar to those for taxing sugar-sweetened drinks, where previous research suggests a 10 per cent price rise can reduce purchases by 6 per cent to 8 per cent.

However the latest study, published in BMJ Open, found that taxing sweet snacks could have an additional knock-on effect on the sale of other foods, leading to consumers cutting their buying of soft drinks, biscuits, cakes and savoury snacks as well.

All very fine and dandy, except the authors of the study then go on to say they don't have the empirical evidence and that the best way to get that is to levy the tax!

As Co-author Professor Susan Jebb, from the University of Oxford, said per the Telegraph:
"It's impossible to study the direct effects of a tax on snack food on consumer behaviour until such policies are introduced, but these estimates show the likely impact of changes in the price."
You couldn't make this up!

Nanny Hates Hot Chocolate

I see that the interfering busybodies from CASH (Consensus Action on Salt and Health) have found another food source, allegedly loaded with salt, to whine about.

This time it turns out that a mug of hot chocolate can have more salt than a packet of ready salted crisps, according to CASH.

Seemingly Galaxy Ultimate Marshmallow Hot Chocolate powder had just over 0.6g of salt per 25g serving - or 2.5g per 100g - more than the 0.15g per 100g target.

Mars Chocolate, quite rightly pointed out that the drink was an "indulgent treat". However, as the BBC notes, but Public Health England (jumping on the CASH coattails) said more work was needed.

A standard 32.5g packet of Walkers Ready Salted Crisps contains 0.46g of salt.

All very well. However, as I have noted many times before, if you are healthy, drink a good amount of liquid and are not sedentary your body will excrete any excess salt via sweat and urine.

That aside, simply add extra sugar to counteract the salt!

Size Matters - The Incredible Shrinking Mars bar

Oh dear, thanks to nanny's war on sugar, it seems that various choccy bars (eg Kat, Dairy Milk and Mars) will be shrunken in size by 20%.

For why?

In order to meet Nanny's targets on reducing sugar.

Had they not done this, the manufacturers might have been named and shamed by Public Health England.

Surely any publicity is good publicity?

Disregarding the manufacturers' apparent fear of PHE, there might be a wee catch in this for the hapless consumer, as yet none of the manufacturers have said that a 20% reduction in size will be a matched by a 20% reduction in price!

How odd!

EU Nanny Bans Chocolate Fags

My thanks to an eagle eyed loyal reader who pointed me to a piece in Deutsch Türkische Nachrichten which says that our EU Overlords are banning chocolate cigarettes, but that real fags and tobacco are still perfectly legal!

As per the translation in NoTricksZone:
"Chocolate that is shaped like cigarettes must no longer be sold in the future. In the EU parliament’s view, chocolate cigarettes are dangerous starter drugs."

Nanny Loves Sweets

Now here's a very odd thing indeed, yesterday I wrote about Nanny banning chocolate on a school trip and conducting a quasi "drug" search of a room to look for chocolate bars etc, yet I also see that Anna Soubry (Nanny's public health minister) said in an interview with trade magazine The Grocer that there is nothing wrong with sweets:
It’s up to us as individuals to lead healthy lives.
There’s a responsibility that the supermarkets have, but it’s important for us to take the industry with us, rather than impose things on them.
Ms Soubry added that it was not the job of the Government to tell supermarkets where they should put their "guilt" shelves (ie the chocolate laden shelves designed to force kids to force their parents to buy them chocolate).

This despite the fact that under a new industry code of practice being drawn up by the Department of Health, stores will be urged to put an end to cheap deals on fatty products, stop funnelling shoppers past rows of unhealthy foods, and spend a fixed amount from their marketing budgets on lower-calorie foods.

Ms Soubry said:
"Guilt lanes is a horrible, horrible expression.

I dislike it intensely - the idea that if you treat yourself you should feel guilty. It's absolute nonsense.

I just said no to my children. I didn't particularly feel pressured. I can understand that some people find it difficult, particularly when it is aimed at children.

But there's nothing wrong with sweets. We just want people to put them in sensible balanced diets - and it's not the job of government to tell supermarkets where to put their shelves."
Hoozah!

Chocolate - The New Drug

Not content with continuing her failed war on drugs, Nanny has now decreed that chocolate is equally verboten.

My thanks to a loyal reader who sent me this sorry tale of Holli McCann, an 11 year old schoolgirl, who committed the "heinous" crime of "smuggling" some chocolate with her on a school trip to the Isle of Wight with her fellow school chums from Bromet Primary in Watford on 1 July.

The following day, her mother was told to phone the school’s hotel urgently. The school told her that Holli was being sent home for eating confectionery and misbehaving on the beach the previous day.

Now there are two sides to every story, according to Spiked Holli’s account of events is that she had stayed up to have a midnight feast with the three friends she was sharing her room with. The contraband consisted of a Kit Kat, a Fudge bar and a Freddo.

Here's the good bit, wherein we discover how Nanny discovered the midnight feast.

Was Holli ratted out by a chum?

No!

Nanny read her letter home!!!

The following day, the pupils handed in letters they had written to be sent home. A teacher read Holli’s description of her minor nocturnal adventure and alerted headteacher Yvonne Graves, who then conducted a search of Holli’s room and suitcase, before deciding to send her home.

Holli’s mum is quoted:
"This was a search for chocolate, but was carried out in such a manner you would have thought they were running an international drug-smuggling operation from their hotel room."
Hertfordshire County Council gave Spiked a statement on the matter:
"Before the Year 6 trip to the Isle of Wight, parents and pupils were asked to sign a behaviour charter which clearly outlines how pupils should behave during the trip. This is to ensure that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable holiday. It was made clear that breaking any of the rules within the charter would result in parents being asked to take their child home, as was the case with this pupil."
Now as to what other "behaviour" issues there were wrt Holli is not stated, yet the primary reason for her being sent home is the eating of chocolate discovered after a private letter was read by a teacher.

What kind of example does this mail reading inflexible approach to petty rules set children?

Billy Bunter would most certainly not have approved!

The Joy of Mars

The trouble with living in a humourless, pompous and priggish Nanny state is the fact that many of us end up in some ways behaving like Nanny.

Step forward the chocolate manufacturing company Mars, which has been overcome with priggishness and pomposity over how some of its customers use its iconic sugar laden confection the Mars bar.

To what usage of a Mars bar do I refer?

Why none other than the famous deep-fried Mars bar, allegedly first fried by the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, in Aberdeenshire, some twenty years ago.

Anyhoo, Mars is not at all happy that their healthy product has been misused in this way for so long and has now written to the owners of the Carron Fish Bar saying the product is not authorised or endorsed as it does not fit the company's promotion of healthy living.

Mars want a menu disclaimer, to make people aware deep-frying is not what the company has in mind for its product.

FYI a 54g Mars bar contains 242 calories and 9.4g of fat.

A Mars spokesperson told the BBC:
"We are really flattered that customers of Carron Fish Bar like our product so much that it has now become a flagship product for the store.

No application for a protected geographical indication has been filed to date.

Should an application be filed, unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to support it as deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles."
By all accounts the owner of the fish bar is happy to come to an amicable arrangement with Mars.

However, it does seem a remarkably priggish attitude by Mars; I wonder what prompted them to react after twenty years?

Eat Chocolate

I am more than a little gemused to see that Nanny is twisting herself into all sorts of knots over the dangers of sugar (eg cupcakes vs cocaine), and her insistence that we feed kids fruit juice etc.

It would appear, and no one with half a brain should be in the least bit surprised about this, that some juice drinks contain more acid than vinegar.

Dr Kathy Harley, dean of the dental faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons, told the Sunday Telegraph that drinks such as smoothies contain a lethal combination of acid and sugar (this of course does terribly damage to the teeth).

Dr Harley said that a healthier option would be to give kids a glass of water and a handful of chocolate buttons!

She went on to say that Nanny's "five a day" advice (wrt fruit) should in fact be restricted to a "once a week treat".

Now I would like to offer some commonsense advice here, namely that if the kids were given milk and cheese after they had just consumed the fruit juice/fruit, then the acidity levels in the mouth would be neutralised. However, as we all know, Nanny has told us that milk and cheese are bad for us.

Maybe then a spoonful of salt, to counteract the sugar and kill the bacteria?

Oh, I forgot, Nanny hates salt as well!

Nanny Corrupts and Weakens All

Nurse

It is often noted on this site that Nanny's rules, regulations and risk averse predilections have had a detrimental effect on the young.

This is true.

However, I would also venture to suggest that those over the age of 40 have also been weakened by Nanny as well.

Take this harmless example of what happened in my gym/leisure club the other day.

Having been brought up properly and having attended a sensible school (where you were made to brush your teeth with carbolic soap and use a Brillo pad to wash your armpits - only kidding folks:)) I happen to enjoy ice cold showers in between sessions in the sauna (it is actually very good for the immune system, as it raises the white cell count).

Therefore I adjust the thermostat accordingly (it's not difficult, one merely turns it clockwise).

I was therefore greatly gemused to enter the changing rooms post sauna the other day to hear one bloke (in his 50's) moaning that "someone keeps leaving the showers on cold".

I cheerily said "Oh that's me".

To which he replied "Would you mind in future return them to the hot setting".

Am I missing something here?

1 Do people not follow the advice taught to them by their mums, and learned from real life, that you never enter a bath or shower without first testing the temperature (lest you scald or shock yourself)?

2 Are people incapable of turning a thermostat counter clockwise?

3 Maybe I should ask this guy to please turn the shower to the cold setting, when he has finished, so that I don't have to waste 10 seconds of my life adjusting it?

This, by the way, is the same club where I have been asked by someone (in her 20's) how to turn the egg timer (in the sauna) over, where many people regularly leave showers running (without turning them off) because they are lazy/selfish and where one couple left the door to the sauna open whilst they were using it because it was too hot!

Nanny corrupts and weakens all ages, not just the young!

The Lost Weekend - Cocaine vs Alcohol

Saturday night being a rather quiet one this weekend, Eva is visiting her grandson in Stockholm, I decided to "educate" myself and watch a gemusing BBC documentary (presumably aimed at discouraging people under 30 from taking drugs) "How Do Drugs Work?".

The subject being cocaine, the documentary followed a few characters around as they happily snorted coke at various times/venues (eg at a party, in a pub car park, in the street etc).

It gave a potted (pardon the pun) history of coke, seemingly it was the medical "cure all" of the late 19th century; being used as an anaesthetic, headache cure, haemorrhoid cure and even put into tooth paste (that would certainly encourage people to brush their teeth more regularly!).

Anyhoo, as we all know, during the Edwardian era the "morality movement" took centre stage in the UK and USA. The USA banned all drugs and booze (thus creating the modern day mafia), whilst the UK stopped short of banning booze but did ban drugs.

Has this worked?

Ermmm....not at all, seemingly around 1.5M people snort coke in the UK (even leading politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have admitted/refused to deny that they have used it).

Aside from following a few users about their daily business, the programme also showed the police in part of Kent testing people entering nightclubs for contact with the drug (a skin "swatch" can tell if the person has touched it in the last 24 hours).

This seemingly rather pointless testing of people (without reasonable grounds for suspicion of possession) did not catch many people with the drug on them, but did identify that nearly all the people going clubbing had been in contact with the drug in the last 24 hours.

A valuable use of police resources!

Anyhoo, a list of the effects of the drug was duly rattled off during the course of the programme:

- it elevates mood
- it increases self confidence
- it increases sexual desire (although, just like booze, it can cause erectile floppiness)
- it increases the heat rate
- it increases blood pressure
- it can cause heart attacks and strokes
- people feel "down" when the rug wears off
- it damages the nasal cavities (if taken regularly)
- it can be addictive (although it does not cause the same withdrawal symptoms as other class A drugs)

Now, aside from the nasal cavity issues unless you get a lot of champagne bubbles up your nose), does the above list not sound awfully familiar?

Think about it?

Yes, that's right, the list is also applicable to alcohol. Although, it should be noted that alcohol is very fattening, whilst cocaine is not.

Is it therefore not a trifle odd (dare I say hypocritical) that drugs are illegal, yet booze (which, if misused, can also be extremely harmful) is legal? In theory, possession of a small amount of cocaine (even solely for personal use) can attract a prison sentence of several years (unless you are the likes of Paris Hilton).

Is there not something really very wrong here, where 1.5 million people cheerfully disregard the law and our leading politicians have taken/still take the stuff, where we still have a law in place (that is clearly failing) brought about by the past actions of the now long dead "morality movement"?

Is it not time that the law was brought into line with reality?

Pleasure is a short-term reward for doing what your body wants. It is largely about fulfilling basic human needs.

We do many things in life, including eating, having sex, gambling and risk taking, because doing them results in our brains being flooded by feel-good dopamine

Pleasure is vital for our survival - without it we wouldn't eat or have sex, and would soon die out as a species.

Nanny's drugs policy is a shambles, and is destined to fail. Using the law to enforce certain people's views on "morality" never works in the long run.

Do remember loyal readers that our government, that continues to advocate the current drugs policy, is made up of a number of highly placed people who have used (and maybe continue to use) several illegal drugs (not "just" whacky backy).

Factoids

1 The semi civil war in Mexico over drugs, that is now spilling over into the USA, will eventually force legislators there to legalise drugs in order to cut the legs off the criminal drugs lords who are destroying the country.

2 Leading politicians on both sides of the Atlantic (a President and a Prime Minister) have admitted to, or have almost admitted to, taking a variety on illegal substances. Yet they have managed to lead fulfilling, non self destructive lives. How is they seek to maintain a ban on substances that they have taken?

3 Drugs finance terrorist economies, eg Afghanistan. Legalise drugs and the terrorist economy is decapitated.

I say again, without any lack of clarity or fudging of the issue, drugs should be legalised.

Once legalised, they can be taxed and the public properly educated as to their effects.

The legalisation will bring about the end of the stranglehold that the criminal gangs currently have on many of the run down estates in this country. The ending of their supply of easy money will remove their power, kudos and "bling"; their power over others will end.

That surely is a good thing?

Is it not ironic that those who would most strongly resist the legalisation of drugs are those who currently make money of them?

Nuts!

Despite the remarkable failure of BAA to keep Heathrow, one of the world's busiest (yet truly awful) airports, open during the inclement weather my partner (Eva) managed to fly back from Stockholm yesterday without any delay or fuss.

How?

Oh, simple, she flew Norwegian Air to Gatwick (an airport not "managed" by BAA).

Her journey though was not without an element of Nannyism.

On board the flight she was about to open a chocolate bar that contained nuts.

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's right, she was forbidden from opening it.

For why?

Seemingly, somewhere on board was a person with a nut allergy.

Now if this person was sitting next to her, was going to lick the bar or sniff in the nuts I could understand the concern. However, this was simply not the case.

An overreaction yes?

Prat of The Week - Rob Rees

Prat of The WeekCongratulations to Rob Rees, chairman of the School Food Trust (who pays for this quango I wonder?), for winning this week's "Prat of The Week" Award.

Rees has earned his place in the hallowed halls of "fame" for suggesting that chocolates, crisps and sugary drinks should be banned from children's packed lunches. He wants rules tightened on what children can bring into school.

Knives, booze and drugs seemingly taking second place on the banned list to crisps and chocolates!

Doubtless he would have schools open up the kids' packed lunches, and confiscate "banned" items.

Unworkable and unreasonable.

At the end of the day it is down to the parents to decide as to what their kids should eat, not for the state to dictate.

Turning the schools into mini borstals/prison camps hardly encourages the kids to look forward to their school day, or indeed to respect their teachers.

Prats of The Week - Gloucestershire County Council

Prats of The WeekTis time once again loyal readers to award my prestigious, and internationally renowned, "Prats of The Week" Award.

This week it goes to Gloucestershire county council, who have been conducting a very bizarre surveillance exercise on children's school lunch boxes.

For reasons that only would make sense to Nanny and her minions, staff from Gloucestershire county council have been secretly opening the contents of a sample of children's lunchboxes, photographing the contents, awarding marks according to nutritional value then offering parents advice on how to prepare "better" packed lunches.

Ermmm...to my simple mind this just sounds completely loony!

Anyhoo, the scheme was started six months ago and was the diseased brainchild of officials from Gloucestershire county council, NHS Gloucestershire and the local schools.

Quite barking mad to my view.

When I was a young lad my packed lunches tended to be spam or banana sandwiches, a chocolate cup cake, a packet of crisps and a thermos of soup or homemade lemonade.

Nothing untoward ever happened to me from eating this mixture, aside from the unfortunate incident when I dropped the thermos (shattering the inside) and drank the contents (pondering why my lemonade had silver bits floating in it). The doctor advised my worried mum that as I had not consumed any glass, the silver bits would come out in due course.

Health and safety warning: do not do this at home children and drink the shattered contents of a thermos.

Anyhoo, Jackie Hall, the council's cabinet member for schools, has now been made aware of this snooping (she claims that this was "news" to her) and has banned it.

Gloucestershire county council, well deserving Prats of The Week!

Nanny Bans Cake Again

CakeThe design team are very pleased that you all like the new logo so much:)

In celebration they were going to bake you all a cake. However, they then read what the numpties of Knowsley Borough Council (KBC) and Chester University (CU) have been up to, and decided against it.

KBC and CU have set up something called "The Pre-School Nutrition Project", which (as befits a bunch of Nanny wanabees) sets out strict rules for food supplied at nurseries.

Sweets and cakes brought in for children's birthdays cannot be eaten in the nursery, but must be handed to parents at the end of the day.

Now I know that, according to Nanny, we have become a nation of fat bastards. However, making everyone paranoid about what they eat (especially at such a young age) will turn many into body hating anorexics or body hating overeaters.

Julie Tierney, the Assistant Public Health Director behind the scheme, droned on to some media organ or other:

"Our Health & Wellbeing's Early Years Healthy Eating Guidelines encourage nurseries to provide healthy snacks and treats for all children in their care, and encourages them to choose foods and drinks that are not high in sugar as part of a healthy lifestyle.

It is important that special days are celebrated and nurseries are innovative and creative in the way that they do this without the need to give foods high in sugar
."

I didn't know that under fives had a "lifestyle" as such!

Birthday cakes, as such, do not create morbidly obese kids (unless they scoff an entire cake by themselves each day).

Feed a child freshly prepared decent food at set times, allow them the occasional treat (eg cake, chocolate etc) and learn to say "no" to excess; thus you will produce a healthy adult, who has some self control and self respect over what they eat.

Excessive control over every mouthful will create a neurotic adult who is overweight, through excessive comfort eating, or anorexic.

Nanny Bans Cake

Nanny Bans CakesNow I am not too old to remember that when I was a young lad when it was my birthday, my mum would bake a cake and my friends would come over, cause mayhem and share the cake.

Pretty normal stuff right?

Not in Nanny's world!

Olivia Morris, nine years old, wanted to share her granny's homemade chocolate birthday cake with her friends at Rockingham Infant and Junior School in Rotherham.

Not so fast Olivia!

The cake, an unctuous creation of chocolate decorated with Maltesers and Jellytots, was deemed "ungood" by the miserable followers of Nanny at her school.

The school banned her from sharing it with her friends, because it did not comply with healthy eating rules.

By all means promote healthy eating. However, part of the healthy eating concept should allow for the occasional treat. Unless you teach children self discipline, wrt having treats on occasions without "binging", they will never learn self control.

Needless to say this absurdly hard line policy will only put the children off "healthy" eating, and make the teachers look like miserable old fools.

The staff at the school should be thankful that this was a harmless birthday indulgence. Some less well brought up kids at that age would have been cracking open a can of cider and sniffing some glue in celebration.

Punishing Olivia for a harmless birthday treat sends entirely the wrong message.

BTW, the best birthday cake my mum ever made was a chocolate Swiss roll fashioned in the shape of a space rocket, covered in chocolate and set on a "moonbase".
