A Rare Display of Common Sense From Nanny

A cost-benefit analysis will have set the acceptable level of Covid-19 deaths before restrictions are reintroduced at around 1,000 deaths a week, two Government advisers have told i.

Downing Street has denied it has set any “acceptable level” of Covid deaths but one adviser, who has been close to the Government since coronavirus struck 18 months ago, told i that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had privately accepted that there would be at least a further 30,000 deaths in the UK over the next year, and that the Prime Minister would “only consider imposing further restrictions if that figure looked like it could rise above 50,000”.

The source is quoted by the i

“The Prime Minister is minded to implement another lockdown or new restrictions only if the figure of annual deaths looks like it’s going to go above 50,000. That means deaths from Covid of 137 a day, or just under 1,000 a week.

“However, it won’t be an immediate reaction. A sustained rate of death of around a 1,000 a week for two or three weeks will, though, lead to discussion on restrictions being reimposed. Unfortunately, prime ministers have to weigh up the cost of saving lives to the impact on the economy. No one wants to talk about that’s how it works.”

Let us trust that FAKE SAGE don't try to kill off this bout of common sense!

Couple Murdered Trying To Prove Humans Are Kind

I am genuinely saddened to read that an American couple in their 20s have been killed after riding their bikes through an Islamic-State claimed territory, in an attempt to prove “humans are kind.”

As per The Caldron Pool, last year Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan both quit their jobs to document a yearlong journey around the world. Throughout their travels the couple set out to demonstrate that human beings are inherently good.

“You read the papers and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place,” Mr Austin wrote on his blog. “People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil.”

“I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own… By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind.”

On day 369, the couple were biking in formation with a group of other tourist on a panoramic stretch of road in southwestern Tajikistan. “It was there, on July 29, that a carload of men who believed to have recorded a video pledging allegiance to the Islamic State spotted them.

“A grainy cellphone clip recorded by a driver shows what happened next: The men’s Daewoo sedan passes the cyclists and then makes a sharp U-turn. It doubles back, and aims directly for the bikers, ramming into them and lurching over their fallen forms. In all, four people were killed,” including Mr Austin and Ms Geoghegan.

Their deaths do not contradict Mr Geoghegan's point that "by and large humans are kind". However, it does show that not ALL humans are kind or decent.

It also underscores the point that, under the Nanny state many people have forgotten, it is very important to exercise commonsense when taking day to day decisions (be they small or life changing).

Commonsense cannot be left in the hands of Nanny, it is down to each and everyone of us to exercise it!

Don't Film Suspect Packages!

I appreciate that everyone now thinks that "if it moves, explodes, farts etc" then they should film it.

However, seriously, if you see a suspect package (pre or post explosion) report it and get out of the area calmly and quickly.

DO NOT APPROACH THE SUSPECT DEVICE TO FILM IT!

Nanny Kills Common Sense

My thanks to a loyal reader who pointed me to an appalling example of Nanny nonsense, emanating from Legoland in the Trafford-Centre.

Legoland has a policy of banning adults without children from the attraction (on the principle of guilty until proven innocent).

For reasons best known to itself it also decided to apply this policy to Simon Thomason a 40 year old man with cerebal palsy and with the mental age of seven, who used to enjoy visiting the centre with his carer. As such his annual pass will not be renewed next year when it expires, even though he has been going there for 7 months.

Mr Thomason would be allowed in if he went with a child, but he is sadly not capable of looking after himself (let alone a child) without a carer.

A spokesman for Legoland is quoted by the Manchester Evening News:
"Our policy not to permit entry to groups of adults, adult couples, or lone adults, regardless of circumstances, who are not accompanied by a child or children under the age of 16 is we believe therefore appropriate and the best way to constantly maintain a welcoming environment for our young visitors.

We make no apologies for this policy and believe it to be reasonable and appropriate, and one on which we make no exceptions.

That said, we also very much appreciate the continuing appeal that Lego has for all ages, and it has never been our intention to deny access to our adult fans, or cause distress to anyone.

That is why we regularly host evening events specifically for adults in order to showcase specific attractions within the centre and these are very well attended.

We hope very much that all adult guests will join us at one of these sessions and we are sure that he would very much enjoy it.

However if an evening event is difficult for him to attend then if his family make contact we would be happy to agree a time when one of our managers is available to show him around.

Nanny Bans Common Sense

In  Nanny's universe common sense has long since been abolished.

Step forward Tesco, a company that is currently imploding under the stress of its own idiocy, wherein its staff shouted at a customer to remove her guide dog from its Swiss Cottage branch.

Maya Makri was recently in the Swiss Cottage shop, with her clearly marked guide dog, when she was told by staff to "never come back".

The BBC reports that she said three cashiers shouted "no pets allowed" and to leave the shop.

Tesco said:
"This clearly should never have happened and we will contact Ms Makri directly to apologise."
Why are people, especially when performing their functions in a company/organisation, so devoid of common sense?

BMI Is Bollox

I was gemused to see recently that our local pharmacy has installed a combined weighing/BMI calculating machine that charges the hapless punter 50p a pop.

This is all very well if BMI (Body Mass Index) actually meant anything. However, as we all know, it is a meaningless and useless measure.

Step forward Anita Albrecht, who finished sixth in Miss Galaxy Universe 2012, who was recently told by an NHS nurse at the Harold Hill Health Centre to lose weight and exercise more. She was told to consume a paltry 1,000 calories a day!

For why?

Ms Albrecht's BMI was 29, this is classified as "overweight".

Ms Albrecht quite rightly, was less than impressed and told the Mirror:
"She insulted me by making assumptions about my lifestyle without asking me.

She said you are obviously eating too much.

She put me on scales and clearly I'm a lot heavier than other women of my height because I'm a bodybuilder."
To add insult to injury she was told to cut out alcohol and fruit juices that she doesn't drink.
"All of these were assumptions made and, quite frankly, they angered me," she added.

I felt insulted, was made to feel as though I was overweight, over eating and I felt a knock in my confidence."
Surely one ounce of commonsense could have told the nurse that Ms Albrecht was of a greater muscle density than the average person?

Too Old To Drink

My thanks to a loyal reader who recently pointed me to an absurd piece of Nanny nonsense that is devoid of any shred of commonsense.

Philips Lewis is 58, he has grey hair and a moustache.

With me so far?

He went to his local Esso petrol station (Norton Service Station in Midsomer Norton) to buy some petrol and four cans of Fosters.

Can you guess what happened next children?

Yes, that's right, he was banned from buying the booze because he didn't have any ID with him to prove that he was over 18.

He is quoted by the Bath Chronicle:
I could understand it if I was nearer 25 and looked that way but I will be 59 in June. I don’t carry my driving licence with me.

There was a queue behind me and I felt really humiliated and demoralised. I reckon I spend about £2,000 in there on petrol and magazines over a year – and I was made to feel like that at my age.

It was very over the top and I feel it was completely unnecessary. I have written to the service station manager but I will be withdrawing my custom and going elsewhere.

A spokesman for Esso said:
We apologise to Mr Lewis for any offence or inconvenience caused during his visit to the service station.

While we have strict rules concerning the sale of alcohol, it is clear they were applied with a little too much zeal on this occasion. We have advised the sales assistant accordingly, and will contact Mr Lewis to offer him a small gift as a goodwill gesture.”
No, the rules were not applied with "too much zeal" the rules were INCORRECTLY ENFORCED without any commonsense!

Morrisons Backs Down

Yesterday I wrote about Nanny's shameful treatment of Adam Austin over his decision to wear a poppy in honour of murdered soldier Lee Rigby.

It seems that Nanny's chums from Morrisons were stung into remorse by the public outcry over this, they have now reinstated Mr Austin and have allowed him to wear his poppy.

As per the BBC:
"Chief executive Dalton Philips said Morrisons had changed its policy following concern from customers.

"Colleagues not preparing fresh food will now be able to wear a pin badge or bracelet to show their support for registered charities like Help for Heroes," he said.

"So Adam can return to work and wear his poppy with pride.

"It's really important to me that we show our support for our armed forces.

"They do really hard work on our behalf. They put their lives on the line every day."

Nanny Bans Poppy and Commonsense

I was saddened to read yet another example of Nanny "scrupulously" applying rules and regulations, without any application of commonsense or sensitivity.

In this particular cases Nanny's chums from Morrisons in Portsmouth decided to enforce its policy of what can and can't be worn at work the letter. Adam Austin who works there had decided to wear a Help for Heroes wrist band and small metal poppy in remembrance for murdered soldier Lee Rigby.

Unfortunately Mr Austin, aside from working at the checkout, also works in the fresh food area. This means that, according to the rules, he and other members of staff who work in the fresh food area cannot wear things such as poppies lest they fall off an contaminate the food.

Seemingly, if the Mail is to be believed, instead of having a quiet discussion with Mr Austin in private to come to some form amicable solution over this mark of respect, the local management asked him to take off the band etc in front of customers. Following a disagreement it seems he was escorted from the premises, and now faces a disciplinary hearing on Friday.

Following a right old hoo hah on Facebook and Twitter over this incident, Morrisons said that the company had reviewed its guidelines and had decided to allow staff in non-food preparation areas to wear a registered charity wristband.
"We understand it is important for many people to show support for our Armed Forces."
I can perfectly well understand why there are rules wrt dress and what can/cannot be worn in fresh food areas. However, as with any rule, it's not just the rule itself that is important but how that rule is enforced and whether there are extenuating circumstances that should be considered when the rule is breached.

The sad fact of living in the Nanny state is that people and organisations automatically reach for the rule book without ever applying any commonsense or sympathy/compassion first.

The Silence

It being a Monday, with all the depressive baggage that this day of the week brings, I am in the mood to share with you a gemusing story that a loyal reader pointed me to a wee while ago.

Iain Gilmour, head teacher at Isambard Brunel Junior School in Portsmouth, had recently become rather fed up with kids talking so loudly at breaktimes in the dining hall. He therefore asked that they whisper and, rather unwisely, cited "health and safety" as his justification; claiming the loudness of their chatter in the hall broke some unknown noise health and safety rule.

Personally speaking I think he was absolutely right to ask for some "'ush in 'all", children should be seen not heard!

Anyhoo, it seems to have worked, the whispering rule has now been relaxed and the atmosphere in the dining hall is apparently far more conducive to civilised verbal intercourse than before.

My compliments to Mr Gilmour for a good idea and for giving me a laugh!

Nanny Bans Hobbit - Update Commonsense Prevails

Following on from yesterday's article about the trademark dispute between SZC and The Hobbit pub, in which I suggested that "a degree of commonsense and flexibility is required and will reap rewards", I am pleased to see that SZC has taken my advice.

It is reported that for a licence fee of approximately $100 per annum the Hobbit pub may continue to use that name.

There we are, Nanny hasn't completely banned commonsense!

Prats of The Week - Sainsburys

Ooh err missus, tis time for another Prats of The Week Award!

This week it goes to our old chums at Sainsbury's, for yet again proving that Nanny has managed to remove any shreds of commonsense from a large section of the population.

Kirsty Breeze, 19, and Ian Jackson, 24, were in their local Sainsbury's in Stoke-on-Trent recently and wanted to buy a video for their son Leo who is 2.

The assistant at the shop refused to sell the video to them, unless they could prove they were over 25.

Eh?

Was this a video nasty?

No!

Was this a sex romp?

No!

The video was of "Fireman Sam" (U certificate suitable for all ages).

After much kerfuffle, the hapless couple had to ask Miss Breeze's mum (who is 42) to buy the video on their behalf.

Now those of you with commonsense will no doubt be asking the following:

1 The video was for OK for children, why did Sainsbury's not sell it to the couple without the fuss?

2 Given that both of the couple were over the legal age of consent (for booze, sex etc) why does Sainsbury's insist on a 25 year age bar on "adult" products?

3 The video was obviously mismarked on the computer system as being "age restricted", why didn't the staff at Sainsbury's simply override the system?

The answer to all of the above is simple, Nanny has removed commonsense from many people's mindsets, and Sainsbury's evidently are happy to employ people without commonsense.

Prats of The Millennium - QD

Prats of The Millennium

On this dreadfully wet and windy Thursday morning I feel suitably inspired to award my ultra prestigious "Prats of The Millennium" Award.

This millennium it goes to the QD Store in Stowmarket.

For why?

Just ask Lisa Innes, and her daughter Tia-Rose (aged 6).

Tia-Rose was helping her mother buy some Christmas crackers. Alas her help was rejected by the shop assistant, who refused to take the box from her on the grounds that Nanny has forbidden the sale of 'explosives' to children.

For you see loyal readers, the "snap" in the crackers contains explosives.

The sales assistant remain unmoved when it was pointed out that Tia-Rose's mother would actually be paying for them.

Ah commonsense (sigh), whatever happened to it?

The QD Store, well deserving Prats of The Millennium!

BTW, I remember as a lad buying "caps" (those tiny explosives that you put in toy guns and rockets). It was always hugely amusing to put several in the firing mechanism at one time, or indeed just to light the whole roll.

I assume they have long since been banned?

Nanny Unbans No Touch Rule

WTF
Dare I speak too soon, but are we seeing the small buds of commonsense pushing their heads towards the sun?

Aside from Lord Young's robust kicking in the gonads of the health and safety industry and associated lawyers; I see that Michael Gove, the Educashun Secretary, has announced that the "No touch" rules discouraging teachers from restraining and comforting children will be scrapped.

Teachers will also, quite rightly, be given the right to anonymity if faced by allegations from pupils.

Let us see if these small buds of commonsense survive and flourish into adulthood.

Help My House Is Falling Down

I was watching Sarah Beeny last night on "Help My House Is Falling Down", in which each week she comes to offer advice to people who (for reasons that escape me) have bought houses without conducting a full structural survey only to find that they are falling apart.

Anyhoo, last night featured a house with numerous problems; amongst which was a bowed wooden floor. The floor was duly ripped up and it could be seen that the joists, at some stage in the past, had been hacked at thus weakening their structure and causing the floor to bow and become unsafe.

Now, the logical solution would be to remove the weak joists and replace them.

Yes?

You would think that wouldn't you?

Well loyal readers I should point out that last night's house was of course Georgian, and therefore counted as a "listed" building, thus it came under the "protection" of one of Nanny's conservation officers.

Sarah informed the viewers that the officer had ruled that the joists must not be removed, but that extra joists could be put in.

Therefore, at extra expense, steel joists were inserted.

Please can someone tell me how leaving unsafe wooden joists, which will never be seen under a floor, and adding steel joists actually "preserves" our "cultural heritage"?

A house is meant to be a home, ie a "living" embodiment of the people who own it. Putting everything in aspic, merely because it is old, and refusing to allow sensible safety upgrades (when they don't affect the appearance of the house) is absurd.

Nanny Bans Bicycle Repair Kits

Having written articles about Nanny and her stupidity for many years, I have become somewhat desensitised to some of her goings on. However, as jaded as I am, even I found this story to be particularly jaw dropping wrt how braindead our society has become.

Daniel Cottrell (17 years 10 months old) went shopping recently with his dad, in a 99p store in Greywell Shopping Centre.

He made a bold and brave attempt to purchase a bicycle repair kit (which contained a.o. chalk, a rubber patch, sandpaper and a 5ml glue stick).

Can you guess what happened next loyal readers?

Yes, that's right, the shop assistant refused to sell him the kit lest he sniff the glue.

Under the Intoxicating Substances (Supply) Act 1985, it is an offence to sell any intoxicating substances to a person under the age of 18, such as solvent-based glues, aerosols, dry cleaning fluid, correction fluid and marker pens.

However, the offence is only an "offence" if the shopkeeper may reasonably believe the product will be used for intoxication; ie the law actually does allow people to use some commonsense.

Were the lad intending to sniff glue, why would he buy a puncture repair kit?

Why would he go along with his dad to buy it?

Isn't it far easier for a teenager to score hard drugs, therefore why would he waste time and effort sticking a "Pritt Stick" up his hooter and gluing his nostrils shut?

As you can see my loyal readers, Nanny has eradicated any modicum of commonsense from our genetic code years ago. We have become a nation of sheeple.

Nanny 9-5

Late
Rules and regulations, mixed with an edifying dose of inflexibility, are Nanny's tools of trade, as Rita Longbottom discovered to her cost recently.

Mrs Longbottom, a dementia sufferer in her 80's, lived in sheltered housing scheme in Anchor Court Southport.

One afternoon she wanted to come back into the complex, having forgotten her key. However, owing to EU working laws, the live in warden was not allowed to be contacted by the managers (Anchor) of the complex (in order to open the door) because the law states that the warden must have an 11 hour break between shifts.

The result being that Mrs Longbottom had to wait outside for 6 hours (Anchor claim she "only" waited for 2 hours) whilst a locksmith was summoned by Anchor from several miles away.

Residents at the complex pay £28K for the warden to live on site.

There are a number of points that arise here:

1 It is fair enough that the warden has time off, otherwise people would end up taking advantage with endless petty requests. However, in this particular case, some commonsense should have been shown.

2 Errm...given that the neighbours were the ones who contacted Anchor, to let Mrs Rowbottom in, why didn't anyone of them let her sit in one of their houses whilst waiting for the locksmith?

Whatever happened to commonsense?

A Nation of Brain Dead Numpties

What The Fuck
As I have often stated on this site, living in the Nanny state (where everything is spoon fed to you, people are obliged to follow petty rules and procedures and we are discouraged from thinking for themselves) rots the brain.

Hey ho...and here we have proof, if it were ever needed, that the Nanny state really does rot the brain.

Jaz Bhogal, 15, found this to his cost the other day when he went to his local 99p store at Wisbech Cambridgeshire to buy some wine gums.

Can you guess what happened next loyal readers?

Yes, that's right, the shop assistant refused to sell them to him because Jaz was under 18.

Factoid: wine gums do not contain alcohol.

A cursory glance at the list of ingredients of said packet could have verified that, not to mention the fact that most people with half a brain know that.

However, living in the Nanny state rots the brain and the fact that the word "wine" was in the label ensured that an automatic "you're underage" mindset kicked in.

Not surprisingly the store owners have realised that they look like numpties and have apologised. Seemingly there was a "glitch" in the electronic till which flagged the product as "booze".

So that's alright then?

No it's not, because commonsense should have told the shop assistant that the till was wrong!

As noted, we have become a nation of brain dead numpties thanks to Nanny.

Whistle While You Work!

Dear oh dear, what a penny pinching bunch of old miseries the Performing Right Society are!

Sandra Burt, who works at the A & T Food Store in Clackmannan, found this to her cost recently when the music police banned her from singing behind the counter of the shop.

For why?

Cos she didn't have a licence to "perform".

A "mere" £80 to you guv!

Ker-Farking-Ching!

Why was she singing?

Cos the PRS threatened the shop owner with a fine if he didn't buy a licence for playing his radio to his customers, so he turned it off.

Gareth Kelly, music sales advisor for PRS, said:

"Using any copyright material in your store, without paying for it, is illegal.

It doesn't matter whether you're singing a Robbie Williams track, or listening to a Robbie Williams track, you still have to pay for it.

She could be fined for not having a live performance licence, and if the fine isn't paid, then she could potentially be taken to court
."

The PRS said that Mrs Burt could be judged to be giving daily performances, which would require individual daily licences, taking the annual cost up to "four figures".

Good grief, what sad miserable country we have become!

Has no one in PRS ever heard the word "commonsense"?

Finally, after some hoo hah in the media, the PRS has now learned the word "commonsense" and has backed down and sent her some flowers with a grovelling note of apology.

"We're very sorry we made a big mistake.

We hear you have a lovely singing voice and we wish you good luck
."

All very well, but it should never have tried it on in the first place.

Prats of The Week - Water Ban

Prats of The WeekGosh it seems that there has been a veritable smorgasbord of "Prats of The Week" Awards recently.

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing I wonder?

Anyhoo, this time I doff my cap and polish the "Prats of The Week" orb (we really must design one and mass produce it) for the knobheads of Bury Town Hall.

Nanny's chums in the town hall have got their frilly knickers in a twist over the issue of people taking liquids into the town hall for events, such as dance classes.

Is this cos of security issues Ken?

Are they expecting some heinous plot to blow up the town hall using liquid explosives?

Errmmm...no!

The rule has been imposed to stop people turning up at events with their own alcohol.

Now all well and good if you want to make a profit selling booze at wedding receptions etc. However, the jobsworths at the town hall are also banning people from taking bottled water into dance classes.

Oh, of course there is an alternative, the town hall helpfully tells dance class students that they can buy soft drinks at the bar.

Ker farking ching!

This being a Nanny stupidity issue, there is one more factoid that I need to impart to you. People can still bring soft drinks into the town hall if they are attending a physical exercise classes.

Unfortunately, Nanny defines dance classes as a "social activity".

Commonsense would of course dictate that all Nanny has to do is to change the definition, or indeed simply turn a blind eye.

However, my loyal readers, as we all know Nanny never uses commonsense.

Nanny now confiscates the dance class members' water, and tells them to collect it on the way out.

They have quite happily been taking water there for the last 6 years, this fact is ignored by the town hall and council.

By the way, even if the dance class members wish to use ordinary tap water (supplied by the town hall) they are still charged for that!

Ker farking ching!

Bury Town Hall, well deserving Prats of The Week!
