Dacorum Borough Council Cancels VE Day: A Spineless Surrender to Woke Nonsense

In a move that defies logic, decency, and any semblance of historical gratitude, Dacorum Borough Council, under the control of the Liberal Democrats, has axed this year’s VE Day celebration, branding it—wait for it—“too elitist.” Yes, you read that correctly. A day meant to honour the triumph over tyranny, the sacrifices of millions, and the hard-won peace of 1945 has been scrapped because, apparently, it doesn’t vibe with the council’s obsession with pandering to the perpetually offended. This isn’t just a misstep; it’s a gutless betrayal of our shared heritage, and Dacorum Borough Council should be ashamed.

Let’s unpack this idiocy. VE Day—Victory in Europe Day—marks the moment when Nazi Germany surrendered, ending years of bloodshed, oppression, and genocide in Europe. It’s not a jingoistic flex or a private club for toffs in top hats. It’s a collective sigh of relief, a tribute to the ordinary men and women—soldiers, factory workers, nurses, and families—who endured unimaginable hardship to secure the freedoms we take for granted. The Liberal Democrat-led council’s claim that it’s “elitist” is so detached from reality it’s almost performance art. Who’s the elite here? The veterans who stormed Normandy or the councillors sipping lattes while cancelling history?

What’s next—binning Remembrance Day because poppies hurt someone’s feelings? Dacorum Borough Council hasn’t even bothered to explain what “elitist” means in this context. Is it the bunting? The brass bands? The audacity of celebrating a victory over fascism? No, this is just the latest spasm of woke cowardice, where anything that smells faintly of tradition gets torched on the altar of inclusivity. Never mind that VE Day belongs to everyone—rich, poor, young, old, from every corner of the nation. The Liberal Democrats have decided it’s a posh relic, unfit for the enlightened utopia they’re apparently building.

And let’s talk about the timing. We’re in 2025, 80 years after VE Day itself, a milestone that should’ve been a chance to reflect, educate, and unite. Instead, Dacorum Borough Council’s handed us a masterclass in division, signalling that honouring the past is somehow oppressive. What message does this send to the dwindling number of veterans still with us? “Sorry, grandad, your sacrifice is cancelled—too exclusive.” It’s a slap in the face to every family with a story of loss or resilience from that era, which is to say, almost all of us.

The real elitism here is the council’s arrogance. The Liberal Democrats have appointed themselves arbiters of what’s morally acceptable, dismissing the public’s right to commemorate a defining moment in history. Did they consult anyone? Poll the residents? Of course not—why bother when you’re this smug? This isn’t about inclusivity; it’s about control. They’d rather virtue-signal to a tiny clique of complainers than risk the imagined backlash of a few Twitter whiners. Meanwhile, the rest of us—normal people who’d happily raise a glass to 1945—are left scratching our heads at this self-inflicted farce.

Dacorum Borough Council could’ve used VE Day to bring people together. A street party, a history talk, a nod to the diverse Allied forces—there were a thousand ways to make it meaningful. Instead, they’ve chosen erasure, proving they’re more interested in dodging controversy than leading a community. It’s spineless, it’s shortsighted, and it’s an insult to the very freedoms those wartime heroes fought for.

So here’s a suggestion: reverse this asinine decision. Reinstate the celebration, apologise to the public, and let us honour VE Day properly. If the Liberal Democrat-controlled Dacorum Borough Council won’t, then we should do it ourselves—because no amount of bureaucratic hand-wringing can cancel history. The people deserve better than this pathetic surrender to nonsense. Shame on you, councillors. Shame on you.

Nanny's Plastic Bag Tax

I am ungemused to see that Nick Clegg wants to introduce a 5p charge for plastic bags in England (apres the 2015 election which he will lose), in order to discourage people room using them.
The charge will apply to supermarkets and larger stores.

In theory, if the supermarkets are feeling "generous", part of the 5p may be donated to charity.

Will, I wonder, the charities selected be the same ones who regularly stuff unwanted plastic bags through people's letterboxes when they are looking for donations?

Given that consumers will be forced to pay for the bags, does this mean that supermarkets will now remove their logos from them (after all it really will add insult to injury if we are forced to pay for the privilege of advertising the supermarkets!)?

No, I thought not!

The Snoopers' Charter

It being a remarkably wet and windy day in Brighton, those of you wishing to shelter in a warm building on the seafront could do worse than pop along to Grand Hotel this evening.

For why?

I understand that the Open Rights Group at the Liberal Democrats party conference and Big Brother Watch will be at that venue and will be discussing the draft Communications Data Bill.

They have dubbed it the "Snoopers' Charter".

They will be discussing what's wrong with the draft Bill, and what to do about it.

Where and when:
The Grand Hotel (Alexandra suite)
97-99 King's Road,
Brighton,
BN1 2FW.
1815 - 1930.

Speakers:
Nick Pickles, director, Big Brother Watch (Chair)
Jim Killock, executive director, the Open Rights Group
Mark Pack (Editor, LibDem Voice)
Dr Jenny Woods

I wonder if they have heard of Project Stellar Wind (going live in 2013)?

Big Brother - Here Comes The Wind!

In May 2008 I wrote:
"I see that Nanny's much "respected" and "efficient" Home Orifice is considering plans to build a humongous database to store the details of every phone call made, every email sent and every web page visited by British citizens in the previous year.

Oh yes, this will work!

Nanny says that this will help her in her fight against terrorism and crime. Well, she always says that.

From what I recall the invasion of Iraq was meant to make the world a safer place from terrorism too, but that plan was a complete load of old bollocks as well.

The Home Orifice has already approached telecoms firms and internet service providers (ISPs), they would be the ones providing Nanny with their customer records if the plans go ahead.
"
At the time we were ruled by Labour Nanny, and both the Tories and Liberals opposed the plans for email and call monitoring.

Well here we are in 2012, under a Tory/Liberal coalition government and guess what?

Yes, they now want to do the very same thing!

Terrorism is used as Nanny's catch all excuse to cover all of her rapidly expanding surveillance requirements. In truth, our lives are not being blighted on a daily basis by terrorism but by "low level" crime (yobbery, thuggery, robbery, scummy behaviour etc). These are the issues that need to be addressed.

In this volte face, we see politicians revealing their true nature; dishonest, power hungry snoopers.

There are some Tories, such as David Davis, who oppose this nonsense:
“What this does is make (existing problems) 60 million times worse. The simple truth is that this is not necessary. What’s proposed here is completely unfettered access to every single communication you make.

It’s a very, very big widening of powers which will be very much resented by many citizens who do not like the idea. It’s going to cause enormous resentment."
However, even if we manage to stop this, I am afraid far worse is coming.

Ladies and Gentlemen I present project Stellar Wind (due to go live in 2013):
"Its purpose: to intercept, decipher, analyze, and store vast swaths of the world’s communications as they zap down from satellites and zip through the underground and undersea cables of international, foreign, and domestic networks. The heavily fortified $2 billion center should be up and running in September 2013.
Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.”....

Everybody’s a target; everybody with communication is a target.”
Good luck everyone, we are entering an era where will be watched, monitored and manipulated by the state as never before!

Nanny Bans Internships

BS

I am more than gemused to read that Nick Clegg has decreed that internships (unpaid work experience) is evil and wrong.

Seemingly it is now the career springboard of choice for "well connected" students etc, who need to add some real world experience to their CVs (given that value of Nanny's school and university qualifications is now so tarnished).

Quite how Clegg intends to stop companies and students coming to an "internship" arrangement (there is always a way around Nanny's rules) I don't know.

Anyhoo, the really gemusing thing is that Clegg himself employs unpaid interns in his parliamentary office.

Oh, and I also see that Clegg (when he was a student) was an intern himself (thanks to the connections of his father).

Oooh the irony!

These hypocritical politicians really make me sick!

The Dangers of Salt - The New Cocaine

Salt Lovers Guide

Those of you with long memories (not addled by age, drink or drugs) may recall that way back in 2008 I wrote about councils trying to limit the number of holes in salt shakers at fish and chip shops.

"Seemingly at least six councils have ordered five-hole shakers, at our (council taxpayers') expense. These are being given away to chip shops and takeaways in their areas.

Drywite Ltd make the five hole shakers at £2 each. They have now received orders from at least five other councils, including Gateshead and Middlesbrough Council.

As one rather wise chippy owner said, it doesn't matter how many holes it has, people are going to put on as much salt as they want.

Additionally, why not save yourself the £2 and simply bung up some of the holes with sticky tape or glue?

Carol Ackerman, who runs Carol's Plaice in the suburb of Acklam, said:

"People will just put on more salt if they want more.

In fact, we have had some people unscrewing the lids to do so."

Another brilliant use of council taxpayer's money!
"

Well it seems that the anti salt lobby is up to its old tricks again (quite why Nanny has such a bee in her bonnet over salt - a necessary part of the human diet - I don't know...could it be that Nanny is related to slugs?), Stockport council (Lib Dem run) wants fish and chip shops, cafes and Indian restaurants to hide salt shakers behind the counters.

The "thinking" being that if people don't see the salt they may not use it, and those that do want it will have to ask for it.

Ironically Stockport is facing a budget cut of around £50M, so quite how they have found the resources necessary for this campaign I don't know.

The campaign is part of the Greater Manchester ASK campaign, which aims to cut salt consumption.

All utter bollocks:

1 One size fits all does not work wrt "safe" levels of food, drink or drugs.

2 A healthy person, who drinks water and exercises regularly, will excrete (I like that word:)) excess salt via urine and sweat.

3 As a child I used to shave blocks of sea salt for my mum (anyone know where I can get these now?), and would enjoy eating chunks of salt (I have not got a sweet tooth). I am now middle aged, and in ruggedly good health!

4 We should be allowed to eat food in the way we wish.

5 Shall we criminalise salt to such an extent that it will become the new "cocaine" of the street dealers?

Roll Back The Frontiers of The State

In December 2009 I wrote a number of articles about repealing the humongous number of laws made by Nanny.

Here is an extract from one of them:

"Factoid

Did you know that since coming to orifice in 1997 ZaNuLabour have, via its obsession with legislation, created new crimes at a rate of nearly one a day?

Hardly surprising that the police tend to appear heavy and handed and clueless, they simply can't keep up with the legislation and don't know how to interpret it.

Where were the Tories and "Liberal Democrats" during this period?

We have been let down big time by the "opposition".

Why have ZaNuLabour been allowed to get away with this?

You do realise folks that, as entertaining and cathartic as it may be to sit around saying 'isn't this awful?', unless we actually do something to reverse this trend we are up shit's creek without a paddle?

'What can we do?' I hear you cry...

1 Make a list of the laws that you want repealed....
"

In a later article, in December, I wrote this:

"I sent the following to David Cameron (copied to the Independent).

Politicians Have Failed The British People

'David

FYI.

Whilst my views, on their own, may not count for much; the fact that others agree with me (see the comments) ought to spur you to action, I hope, lest the "Repeal Party" actually takes physical form.

'

Now, guess what?

Nick Clegg, known in Tory circles as "Number Two", is to call on the public to nominate laws that they think should be repealed.

Errmmm...could it be that someone somewhere may actually have woken up to the fact that we are fed up with the minutiae of our lives being controlled by the state?

As I asked for then, I ask again, please send in a list of the laws that you want repealed:

1 Stating, in a coherent well reasoned manner, why they should be repealed.

2 The exact legislation you are referring to, ie name and date of passing by parliament.

I am happy to collate a well documented list, coupled with a well reasoned case, and send to Clegg.

A Wee Aside

New AgeGood morning everyone, as a brief aside before resuming Nanny business, may I acquaint you with one wee fact?

As we witness the dawning of a "new age" of British politics, where the Whigs and Tories (the world's longest established political parties) cosy up with each other (having spent centuries fighting each other).

Did you know that the last Liberal member of the Cabinet was Sir Archibald Sinclair, Secretary of State for Air?

He organised the bombing of Dresden.

Thought you would like to know that.

Oh, and by the way, I will be working on a new logo for this site which will be appearing in due course.

Advice To David Cameron

Sent to David Cameron this morning:

"David

For what it is worth, here is my view on the possibility of a Lib-Lab coalition.

Let them have their "coalition of losers".

Within six months, if that, it will fall apart as a result of unreasonable demands made by minority regional parties and the "swivel eyed" members of the Liberal party.

The public will see through this quickly enough as being nothing more than a mechanism to keep Brown in office as PM.

Once it has fallen apart, and an election held, the Tory party will gain the majority it needs to govern without having to go cap in hand to Clegg.

Kind regards

Ken Frost

Hello Young Lovers

Whilst Cameron and Clegg woo each other, and an angry Scotsman sits alone in his bunker, it should be remembered that an economic tsunami is heading our way.

This, if it is not addressed swiftly by national governments (btw we need to form one soon very quickly), will be far worse than the last banking crisis that was visited upon us.

Be warned the "perfect storm" of:

- PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) collapsing one by one
- The lack of a government in the UK
- The collapse in the Dow
- The blood sucking squid investigation
- Civil blood makes civil hands unclean (across Europe)

will bring the world's banking system to the very edge of freezing up (ie no cash in the cash machines).

Well Hung!

Well HungWell my loyal readers, it seems that we are facing a hung parliament.

Gordon Brown, despite being clearly the loser, will desperately cling on to power in Downing Street. Meanwhile the economy will collapse, and we face turning into a cold/damp climate version of Greece (see my views on what we should do with Greece on www.loanbuster.net).

Despite all the hooplah over "boy Clegg", the Liberal Democrats have managed to perform less well than they did in the last election. However, they appear to be under the illusion that they have the right to act as "king makers".

On the ground we saw clear evidence that 13 years of ZaNuLabour have turned us into a third world country, unable to even print enough ballot papers for people to vote with.

The final piece of icing on the cake is that whoever cobbles together some form of "government" will inevitably have to call another election before the end of the year.

Welcome to the third world!

Nanny's Nasty Little Habit

Nasty Habit
Factoid

1 Make a list of the laws that you want repealed.

2 When a politician comes knocking on your door, sliming for you vote, tell him/her that if there is a written guarantee that these laws will be abolished, within 50 days of the new parliament, you will vote for them.

3 Refuse to provide the state with any information (no matter how trivial) that it requests from you, unless you are legally bound to do so.

4 Send the list to laws you want repealed to your local MP, and remind him/her that their job is on the line if they don't comply with your wishes.

Prats of The Week - Let The Kids Run The Classroom

Prats of The WeekOoh my gosh, another "Prats of The Week" Award one day after my last one, Nanny really has excelled herself this week!

Anyhoo, this award goes to the Liberal Democrats and Nu Labour (for listening to the Liberal Democrats).

The Libs have been beguiled by an a Ofsted survey that says that a third of pupils do not believe they are properly listened to by their schools.

Errmmm...so what?

I recall, at the tender age of 16.5, attending a sixth form/Masters forum at my old school and asking for a bar to be opened in school.

The result?

Zilch!

I was ignored!

Anyhoo the Libs are having none of this and have tabled an amendment to the educashun bill, that has been accepted by Nu Labour; whereby kids as young as five will win the legal right to tell teachers how they should be taught and disciplined for bad behaviour. They will have a say in the running of their schools, from the uniforms they wear to the meals they eat.

In the House of Lords, Children's Minister Baroness Morgan said:

"As a minimum, schools should seek and take account of pupils' views on policies on the delivery of the curriculum, behaviour, the uniform, school food, health and safety, equalities and sustainability, not simply on what colour to paint the walls."

Completely potty!

Why not just let the kids teach themselves, and be done with the whole expensive business of paying adult teachers?

The Libs and Nu Labour, well deserving "Prats of The Week"!

By the way, does this mean that I can now ask my old school to open that bar then?

Big Brother - The Secret Use of The DNA Database

Big Brother
My thanks to Dixon of Dock Green who alerted me to this article on the Liberal Democrat site.

I publish below unedited.

Now is this doesn't tell you that Nanny has been lying through her teeth to us, over her plans for the DNA database, what will?

We still have two more years of this bunch of fascists in office (whoever ends up being PM), it never ceases to amaze me how the Labour Party (which claims to be "for the people") always ends up acting like fascists.

Things are going to get worse!

Article from Lib Dems (who are in many cases almost as bad as Nu Labour)

The Home office has been allowing private companies access to the DNA database for commercial reasons, according to research by the Liberal Democrats.

The information, revealed in response to Freedom of Information requests, shows how:
  • Up to May of this year, the Home Office approved 25 applications for research projects using DNA profiles from the DNA database

  • 5 are from private companies - Three from LGC and two from Orchid Cellmark

  • In some of the research projects, full details are not disclosed because of FOI s43. This allows companies to not give details because it would harm their commercial interests.

  • No one whose DNA is being used in these projects has given their consent.

  • Innocent people are on the database, and their DNA will have been included in the research.

  • The police, many of whose officers have added themselves to the DNA database voluntarily, rejected a request for their DNA samples to be used in a research project.
Liberal Democrat MP, Jenny Willott said:

"For nearly a decade, the Home Office has been secretly approving controversial research projects using profiles from the DNA database.

No consent was ever sought from the people involved, many of whom have never been charged or convicted of any offence.

It is outrageous that people's DNA has on five occasions been passed to private companies to pursue their own commercial interests.

The 25 projects that have been approved by ministers include some sinister explorations into ethnic profiling.

It is appalling that these Big Brother practices have been allowed to go on unchecked for so long and with extremely limited ethical standards.

Unless the Government comes clean about exactly what they are using profiles for, this highly dubious ethical practice of dishing DNA out for research must be suspended immediately
."

Nanny Bans Open Air Smoking

Nanny Bans Open Air SmokingOh dear oh dear, Nanny really is fixated with smoking. Not content with banning it inside public buildings, and trying to prevent firemen from entering the homes of smokers, Nanny is now trying to ban smoking in the open air as well.

Nanny's chums in Sutton council want to introduce a smoking ban in children's open air play areas.

Why do we need local councils?

Needless to say councillor Bruce Glithero, the person leading the hysterical calls for an open air ban, belongs to the party with a name that is a contradiction in terms...Liberal Democrat.

Isn't it funny how the Liberal Democrat party is always at the vanguard of calls for restrictions on people's liberties?

Why don't they change their name to something that actually reflects their true political leanings, eg The League of Interfering Fascists?

Anyhoo, Glithero said:

"As the father of four daughters we often like to go to the park, but recently I was sitting at the side of the sandpit when I turned around to see one of my four-year-old twins spluttering.

At first I thought she had swallowed some sand, but then I realised she was coughing because smoke from a woman sitting nearby was blowing directly into her face. It seemed so unfair.

The main reason people go to the park is to enjoy some fresh air, and this move aims to protect that
."

What a prat!

There is ample fresh air for everyone and life, by the way, is unfair; so stop whinging!

The council has approved Glithero's plans, and the scheme will be trialled at Beddington Park.

Needless to say, the sign printing industry will be doing very nicely out of this. Signs will be erected (can I say erected?) informing smokers of the new rules, which will be enforced by Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

Safer Neighbourhood Teams?

Has anyone ever heard of these people?

Who are they, what do they do and are taxpayers paying for them?

Now, here is where this scheme of Glithero falls apart.

Can you guess what the fundamental problem is with his scheme?

Yes, that's right, it's not be legally enforceable.

The council clearly is inhabited by a complete bunch of tossers, how do you enforce a non legally enforceable rule?

Seemingly Glithero expects the public to co-operate.

The costs of the signs for this unenforceable rule run to £860. This money could have been spent on improving the playground facilities for the kids.

This not the first time that Sutton council has done something stupid. In 2006 Sutton councillors tried to stop people smoking in their own homes.

Under the proposal, council tenants would not have been allowed to smoke while being visited by health workers and staff such as those delivering meals on wheels. Needless to say the scheme was deemed to be bollocks by people who live in the real world, and had to be withdrawn in the face of fierce opposition.

Funny how the phrase Liberal Democrat is such a contradcition in terms.

The trouble with Liberal Democrats and indeed local councils is that common sense, and practicalities are irrelevant to them.

As I often ask on this site; what is the farking point, use or value of local councils (or for that matter Liberal Democrats)?

With regard to the absurd scheme of Sutton council, I suggest that a bevy of smokers descend upon the park and light up; let's see what happens then.

Nanny Bans Happy Meals

Nanny Bans Happy MealsOh dear oh dear, Nanny's minions running what they believe to be the people's republic of Liverpool clearly have far too much time on their hands.

Liverpool council have taken umbrage at McDonalds over their "Happy Meals".

Seemingly the children of Liverpool are exceedingly fat, and the council are blaming McDonalds and their Happy Meals for this. According to Nanny the fact that Happy Meals offer a small toy, is the cause of Liverpudlian kids buying all those "nasty" Happy Meals which are making them fat.

As such, Nanny's chums on the council (in the "Scrutiny Group", how very sinister and Orwellian) want to introduce a by-law banning the sale of fast food accompanied by toys.

Lib-Dem councillor Paul Twigger said:

"The Scrutiny Group is recommending that a by-law be enforced to stop the circulation of free toys associated with junk food promotions.

We consider it is high time that McDonald's are challenged over their marketing policies which are directly aimed at promoting unhealthy eating among children.

Childhood obesity is a dire threat to health in this country and it needs to be nipped in the bud.

I am not impressed that McDonald's have introduced so-called healthy options to its menu.

Children are directly targeted with junk food and McDonald's use the Happy Meals to exploit the pester power of children, against which many parents give in.

In most Happy Meals, the toy is sold with a burger along with high-calorie fries and milkshakes.

This kind of junk food is habit-forming and the Happy Meals are cynically aimed at younger children
."

Isn't it funny how the "Liberal Democrats" are more often than not anything but "liberal" or "democratic" in their actions and desires?

Maybe they should change their name to something that more accurately reflects their true feelings?

Any suggestions?

OK folks, here's why this idea is bollocks:

1 The fatness or otherwise of the children of Liverpool is the responsibility of their parents, not the state.

2 The fat kids will be eating all sorts of shit, Happy Meals are not the prime cause of their obesity

3 We live in a free market economy, people can buy what the fark they like; and companies can market their products in any way that they see fit (so long as it is not misleading)

4 Free toys and gifts etc have been included with products (eg cornflakes etc) for decades; they have not been the cause of "fatness" before, and are not the cause of "fatness" in this case.

Nanny should keep her nose out, we have the right as consumers to buy what the fark we want!

You've Had Your Chips

You've Had Your ChipsOh dear, there really are some prissy people in some (Hah!...let's be clear...ALL) of our local councils.

It seems that in the Royal Borough of Maidenhead, there is something of a row going on about the opening of a fish and chip shop in Clifford Crescent.

A relatively harmless enough business venture, one would have thought?

Not if you are a Liberal Democrat.

Councillor Humaira Jared (Liberal Democrat) is against the shop.

For why?

Chip shops, according to the councillor, encourage rats, obesity in children and risk an increase in anti-social activities.

What a load of bollocks!

Isn't it funny how that party more often than not seeks to curtail individual freedoms and liberties, hardly very liberal or democratic is it?

Nanny's Gestapo State

Nanny's Gestapo State
Those of you who live in Birmingham, and who have forgotten that on 1st July 2007 Nanny's anti smoking rule comes into force, need not fear.

The much "respected" and "service minded" local council has an excellent plan to help you to remember not to smoke in public.

They will be unleashing 100 "enforcement officers" onto the streets of Birmingham.

Neil Eustace, chairman of the city council public protection committee (an Orwellian concept if ever I heard one), is quoted as saying:

"On July 1, our officers will be out in force.

We are very confident that the ban will be self enforcing,

but there will be a level of force from the start
."

Am I imagining it, or is this "servant of the people" threatening the people?

It strikes me that he and Nanny's lackeys in this most unloved of councils have got ideas above their station in life.

Eustace's profile says that he is a Liberal Democrat, isn't it funny how that party always produces the sort of people who tend to act like mini Gestapo officers?

By the way, try clicking the link on Eustace's page to find out about the Public Protection Committee...funny that, nothing there?

Why is that then???

Here is what Birmingham City Council's website website says that they will do:

"After 1st July high profile enforcement activity will commence immediately and our Enforcement Officers will target any premises subject to complaint. There will be a national and local hotline (numbers to be announced – watch this space) as well as e-mail and text systems available for reporting non-compliance."

Nice to see that they will encourage people to spy and report on each other!

The state should fear the people, not the people fear the state.

In case you are worried about the cost of these "enforcement officers", have no fear, Nanny has given Birmingham £600K to pay for them.

Oh, wait a minute, that would be £600K of our money...errmmm...collected in part by taxes on fags, yes?

Nanny's Gestapo will be empowered to photograph and film smokers, then issue them with a £50 on the spot fine.

Isn't it illegal to take photos of someone without their consent?

Now the question arises, when smoking has been eradicated in Birmingham will these "enforcers" be out of a job?

I guarantee that they will remain employed, and will be used by the council to spy on people for other "misdemeanours".

The Gestapo state has arrived, on the back of a fag packet!

Feel free tow rite to Nanny's lackeys at Birmingham council, and vent your spleens:

Prats of The Week

Prats of The WeekMy prestigious "Prats of The Week Award" goes to Nanny's chums in the North Yorkshire Police Authority, they have succeeded in splurging £28K of taxpayers' money on the construction of a shower for Della Cannings, the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police.

Yes folks, you did read this correctly, £28K!

That must be one hell of a shower.

Anyhoo it seems that this little story has caused something of a stir, North Yorkshire MP Phil Willis said that the cost of Chief Constable Cannings' new shower was "ridiculous" and warned North Yorkshire Police was in danger of becoming "a laughing stock".

No kidding?

The cost of this plumbing job was brought to light by the good people of the Yorkshire Post, who had to threaten the force with a complaint to the Information Commissioner after their initial request via the Freedom of Information Act was ignored.

Don't you think it funny that in order for the taxpayers to find out how wasteful Nanny is, the Freedom of information Act has to be used?

Don't you think that it is even more funny, that the North Yorkshire police then tried to ignore this act?

Pathetic!

However, the "good old boys" in the police were still not that forthcoming with information (why should they be?..they are there to enforce the law, not uphold or follow it themselves!).

Seemingly, although the Yorkshire Post were given details of the £28K bill from Blyth-based contractor D Wilkinson, there were no rival quotations or any information which suggests any tendering process for the work.

Ms Cannings, rather incongruously, has now announced a full inquiry into what had been uncovered.

An investigation by her own force, into herself and the actions of her force?

Yes, that will work!

The investigation will focus on whether there has been "proper application of public money" in relation to the "planning, inception and project management" of the refurbishment for the en-suite shower at her office in the force headquarters at Newby Wiske, Northallerton.

It will also look at "any wider implications of the evidence gathered" to see if there are "consequences" for the "fitness for purpose" of the police authority's contractual arrangements.

Now call me stupid...

"Ken you're stupid"...

but who the fark pays £28K for a shower?

You don't need an investigation, common sense dictates that £28K is way too much for a shower. Either there has been fraud, or else massive incompetence; either way, heads must roll.

Chief Constable CanningsEven Ms Cannings seems a tad "surprised" at the cost, in an email she tells the force's finance director, Joanna Carter, that she "cannot believe" the amount involved and declares it "a very serious matter" requiring full investigation.

The sound of arse being covered fills the air.

Seemingly, Ms Cannings is of the view that the figure originally quoted was "around £6K".

Quote:

"How come I am being advised that the cost is nearly five times more?"

Seemingly the main cost elements of this shower is broken down as follows:

-Plumbing £15K
-Electrics £4K
-Flooring £1K
-Ceiling £1K
-Building work £5K
-Furniture £1K

In another email, Ms Cannings says that her instructions to the estates department were given verbally by her, or through her staff officer, "to choose shower head or whatever".

Quote:

"I didn't get involved very much except seeing proposals and choosing carpet colour etc..."

Phil Willis, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, said:

"This is ridiculous.

What is more we are in danger of North Yorkshire Police becoming a laughing stock for its profligacy.

The taxpayers of North Yorkshire will be increasingly horrified

to know that the astronomical increases in the police precept

appear to have resulted in largesse for senior officers

while the public continue to demand greater resources on the streets
."

Out of all the counties in the UK for this to have occurred in, it beggars belief that it happened in Yorkshire (a county where people are reputed to be cautious with their money).

Ms Cannings has been in the news before. In 2003, the police precept went up by 76%followed by a 10% rise in 2004. A fleet of top-of-the-range Volvos was being acquired for senior officers, and an audit report revealed that the force had developed huge financial reserves after being unable to spend the extra revenue it had received.

Ms Cannings said, at the time, that she was anxious to dispel the impression "that this authority has a piggy bank full of money and it does not know what to do with it".

Re not knowing what to do with it, job done I would say!

North Yorkshire Police, well deserving the "Prats of The Week Award".
